[q] nexus 6p hijacked - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hope to explain my problem intelligently....here goes! In February Google put out 2 security patches. After installing the first update and as I was installing the second update I am fairly certain my phone got hijacked. From what I could gather it seemed my bank account along with my Google accounts and entire phone was "taken".
I no longer had admin rights and my settings changed. I had lots of areas/files grayed out and my internal storage is obselete. I have tons of screenshots that show what I believe are problems associated with whatever took place. My phone was bombarded with advertisements up until recently. My APN changed and often will lose connection all together and I can no longer edit, delete or add APNs. I believe this affects the root of phone so factory resets are in vain. My download mode is disabled so I cannot flash factory image. My phone constantly shuts down with battery at 50%, 60%, & 70%. My memory is at 23% and I am not able to address that issue because I cannot access my internal storage. I have seen what appears to be info gathered in reports in files that I am not allowed to open.
I have spent lots of time on the phone with Google and Verizon representatives who, of course, are no help. Google because phone is outside of warranty, and Verizon because they deem the problem to be Google's, AND IT IS GOOGLE'S IN MY OPINION because of the security breach allowed in between the 2 February updates. (Rant over!)
I paid $800 cash for this phone which was well worth it until this all took place. I am not in any position financially to replace my phone. Months back I bought a $70 phone and as crazy as it sounds when I signed into my Google accounts on that phone it appeared the problem followed my accounts to the new phone....maybe it was paranoia - maybe not! This basically took my life when it took my accounts and it has been a slow process in recovering accounts and moving forward.
Please, if anyone can help me get my phone back to its factory condition where I have access to my internal storage and admin rights and know my info is no longer compromised I would be so deeply appreciative. I am happy to provide any information necessary and have included a few items just in case they may be helpful to start with.
With my sincerest gratitude,
Slashbaylor98

You could try a factory reset but at that level of intrusion I would completely wipe the phone including internal. I'm not sure how to do that stock but if you unlock bootloader and install TWRP has the option. Then can download stock firmware then with fastboot flash latest start brand new slate. You would want to back up any important pictures, downloads, sms, documents etc.

Try making a new Google account on a PC not your phone and try logging in with the new google account and then do a full wipe. I hope this works, good luck

Exchange Server Account causing reboot - Title Renamed

Not good... From the start, Radio Shack and Sprint Servers took almost 2 hrs to activate my phone and accept my Gift Card. After everything was all said and done, I was playing with the phone downloaded the updated however I didnt install it just yet.
I rebooted the phone, and now it is stuck in an endless reboot cycle... I get the Sprint logo which transitions into the 4G one and plays the little tone; Non-Stop.
All I did was tried popping in my Droid 16GB SD card and it started happening... on my way to RS now to replace. WTF ! ERRR
UPDATE: After further discussion it looks like the issue was with Exchange Server Accounts and Pin/Passwords. Continue reading the thread for more discussion
HTC is aware of the issue and will be addressing in a future update. For the time being there are two ways to bypass the reboot/restart endless cycle.
1) When creating a PIN/Password include at least one Alpha character in your password; i.e "dad1" "1223x" "bobby23", etc...
OR
2)

I FOUND A FIX TO EVERYONE'S ISSUE
Like the poster above me said, that is exactly the reason that this works.
Here's what you have to do to get exchange server hooked up normally and not have a constant reboot!
Follow these steps and you will not have any problems.
1.) Hard reset your phone (VOLUME DOWN + POWER with the phone off)
You will have to go down to "CLEAR DATA", it will ask you to confirm.
2.) Let the phone reboot, everything will be erased. Setup your exchange and google account.
WHEN YOU CHOOSE A PASSWORD, USE A NUMBER AND A LETTER
3.) Go to the market place and search for "No Lock". Download it. Install it. Run it.
4.) Press the middle button to make the phone no longer require a lock.
Voila! I just did this and it works perfect!
OP you might want to put this in the first thread you posted so other people know about it without having to go through all these pages.

Credit goes to Marc and Trip - Thanks guys.
That straight sucks yo...I didn't download the update at all. I hope your radio shack is better than mine. They had a total of 4 shipped to them, and they were all pre-ordered.
Damn it, and that's what I'm afraid of...
What's to do if this is the case at my RS. Also have you tried rebooting, and if its not too much trouble try tossing in another SD Card, then reboot
UPDATE: While typing this I was able to hard reset (Vol Up + power button)and it looks like its working... If I can duplicate the problem im gonna take it back, if not i'll keep it and keep a close eye for the next 30 days
Did you try pulling the battery?
Yup, tried pulling battery and everything...
I was able to duplicate the problem and its as followed;
Fresh EVO w/ 8GB Stock card.
Power Off using Off Button
Battery pull and insert Droid 16GB SD Card
Power On Via Button Causes restart
Only way to stop this from happening is a hard reset (Vol Up + Power Button)
What's weird is that when I do a hard reset with the 16gb droid sd card, the EVO starts up just fine and i am able to access my SD Card with all files without issues.
I'm gonna try doing the same procedures with the 8GB card to see if that causes the same problem - if so, it leads me to believe this is a permissions/mounting issue with the EVO that I'm assuming the bug/update fix takes care of. (I have still not yet installed the update in fear ROOT will not be accessible after the update)
Jason
UPDATE 1: Using the same instruction above, however going from the 16GB to 8GB the phone restarts fine with no reboot cycle.
UPDATE 2: Same instructions going from 8gb back to 16gb is now fine.... seems like the phone wanted to read the 16gb first - im confused *SCRATCHING HEAD*
I had the exact same issue with a brand new EVO that I accepted the OTA update (a Sprint rep confirmed that the update was specifically to address the SD card issue).
After the update installed and unit rebooted, it went into an endless cycle. I had to hard reset, and the device is in the process of Hands Free Activation. Will update when I have more info.
Mine is doing it with and without the memory card. F(@#& now i have to go back to the damn store! UGH!
It also started doing this after i did the upgrade.
khov,
I'm downloading the update each time I had to hard reset, however I am not installing it... Were you doing the same ?
OK GUYS, seems the issue at least for me was something with exchange server. After i connect to my exchange server it gives me this endless reboot.
here's how to fix it and start over. Press and hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER BUTTON until a screen comes up, at that screen select clear data
it will reset your phone to factory but that's better than a rebooting phone.
Trip !
You're a genius! It seems that after I initially did the hard reset, I didn't setup my exchange account. After I thought everything was all fine and dandy, I setup my exchange account started reading the replies and found Trip's findings...
Low and behold, without tampering with the SD Card, I rebooted (after i setup my exchange account) and now it has me in an endless reboot. FACK !
Anyone else please verify. Add Exchange account and restart...
It's the password that Exchange makes you set up.
Turn off "Require Password" on your Exchange ActiveSync Mailbox Policy under Client Access.

Yeah i know and this is not going to work for me either unless they get a fix out ASAP i HAVE to use an exchange server. It's bad enough i have to enter a damn password everytime but now this...ugh!

That's not a possibility unless someone comes out with an app to bypass the password.
I work for a VERY LARGE company that runs our exchange server, i cannot edit those settings.

Try using TouchDown then.
Soup.
Thanks for the suggestions but this should not be necessary ! WTF. Who should I be pissed off at, HTC or my IT department for requiring a password.
What's weird is when I had an iPhone, I was required to put a password. When I switched to the Droid, It never prompted me for one. Now that I've switched to the EVO, its asking me for one but casues these endless reboots.
Like Trip, I cannot ask my IT dept to remove the use of a lock code. I work for a City Government that shares lots of data sensitive material via email (I know, dumb right) and I NEED access to it.

Sprint or Google is to blame here. It's Sprint's build of 2.1 that has the problem. I talked to them today and they acknowledge the problem and say that the fix won't come until 2.2 is released.
Everyone needs to call Sprint and complain in order to have a fix pushed out sooner than the 2.2 release date.
In the meantime, someone give TouchDown a shot and let us know if that is a feasable workaround or not. I would but I've already turned the password policy off for my account on my Exchange server.
I made this happen to a demo unit I was playing with (while the rep at Radio Shack continued to try to activate my phone - took nearly 2 hours to complete).
I was playing with HTC Sense's "Scenes" feature. I believe I was switching scenes too quickly, it automatically rebooted itself, and as soon as it started up again and got to the lock screen, I tried to use it and it rebooted again. I allowed it to reboot, and instead of immediately trying to unlock the screen, I let it sit and fully load, and it worked properly.
I don't know what the issue is, but I have yet to experience it with my own Evo... yet.

I did call Sprint! The lady was a complete dumbass, i told here "i know exactly what the problem is there's no need for me to go BACK to the store" ... she basically read off a computer telling me what to do
drove me nuts

Wow.. suck.
I guess I got a rare one. The dude I talked to actually listened, put me on hold to speak with colleagues, and then confirmed and added my number to some list of affected people.
Hmm I just got off the phone with a Tech Support rep who sounded like he knew what he was talking about.
According to him, there are two UPDATES, an HTC system update (SD card issue) and a Firmware Update (fixes exchange issue)... he told me to go and manually check for updates - one of these should fix the issue ? does this sound legit /

[Q] NB1 - EAS and SD complaints.

Ok, So I am posting this to see if others are having the same issues...
I grabbed NB1 OTA last week, and then spent the next 2 days battling issues. First, I was running the OEM 4.3 version that was rooted. When the OTA came out, I deleted the Superuser apk, and reset the tethering apk and odex files (learned this trick in the last update), and accepted the update. Upon restart, half my apps were not installed. Which, upon a little digging, I learned happens. One of the main apps I use is a security app mandated by my employer to utilize Exchange Active Sync. Since I could not seem to get this app running correctly, and I needed it running correct, I did a reset of my phone, and started over...
The security app loaded normally, and I soon had EAS configured and running.. well, sort of.... Strangely enough my contacts were not syncing from my Exchange 2014 server. I didn't think much of it, assumed that my IT guys had messed something up on their end, and went about my business of reinstalling my apps, and copying my customers sounds and ringtones to the phone.. It was not until later in the day that I realized my battery was being sucked dry at an extreme rate. Checking the battery app, Exchange Services was eating more (2x) of my battery then screen use!! This was bizzare to me, as I have never seen EAS use more then a trickle. I checked, and sure enough my contacts had still not synced. So I started googling, and there it was, there is a known issue with the 4.4.2 build with EAS and battery consumption. Seems in some cases, the connection to the Exchange server is not closed, and EAS is constantly "chatting" to exchange. I pulled up the data manger (I use My Data Manager), and sure enough EAS had been consuming huge amounts of data. Without new email being delivered, it was running through 4mbs an hour. Good thing I was on wifi, not walking around town!! So trying to put 2 and 2 together, I thought maybe it was the failed contact sync, and disabled it. Nope, EAS was still burning through data and battery. Next I switched from push, to 15 minute sync. And that did the trick, EAS calmed down, and started acting normally. But this is not the solution I was looking for. Further research shows the Google knows about this bug, and it is a low priority for them. Thanks Google... I assume if it were a gmail bug, you'd be all over it....
Doesn't end there... I knew going in to 4.4.2, the changes around the SD card were going to be a pain. But it never occurred to me that placing my customer sounds on the SD card were going to be a problem. You see, once I set my phone to use my ringtones, and notifications that existed on my SD, and rebooted my phone (during the EAS process above), 4.4.2 corrupted my SD card..... I had to reformat it, and copy back all my data (mostly music)... Ugh...
I love Android, but this is the worst build I have ever seen...
So, has anyone else seen the EAS issue? Had your phone corrupt the SD card yet???

Poss firmware issue Note 4 - All Aussie 6.01 firmwares XSA, OPS etc please check

So I previously had the Indian 6.01 ROM on my SM-N910G but with Optus firmware finally coming back reverted back (factory reset before and after)
Everything has been ok except I have just discovered in Settings -> Backup and reset the Backup account is greyed out saying "No account is currently storing backed up data"
In google Drive where you to manage backups it says you need to wait after 24 hours to see any apps there after turning backup on. Well I turned this on Friday night nearly 36 hours ago
Googled this issue and suggestion is to turn off backup and reenable and reboot. Didnt Work. Another is to remove All Google accounts, reboot and re-add which I did. First account I added back in asked me to Backup I selected Yes. Did not work
Others say to delete data for Google Account and Google Transport and it is supposed to prompt you to select a Backup account but the option to Clear Data for both of these apps is greyed out
I deleted data for Google Play Services and Google Play Store and deleted Google Accounts again and this did seem to work asking me to select Backup account but after selecting, still greyed out and no account
Anyone else having issues.. I have seen some people say even when they fix the issue it comes back... It was working with Indian ROM. Last thing I want to do at this stage is factory restore takes me a good half a day to get my phone back to how I want it after that..
Cheers
I'm also having the same problem with my s6 active and Android 6.0.1. Tried factory reset but still didn't help
Thanks for letting me know but geez what have samsung gone and done now and ballsed up all the aussie MM phones or don't tell me this is on purpose due to some sort of legal requirement with apple again where they weren't allowed to let the gallery auto rotate pics due to an alleged design ripoff from ios
Sent from my SM-N910G using Tapatalk
anyone can check their phone please and confirm option is greyed out?? another user tells me same problem from them. Have reported to Samsung but they deny its an issue and want me to RMA my phone.. No thanks! I just need more people to confirm they have the issue so can show Samsung its a firmware bug that everyone is having!
If you have the issue please let me know and report to [email protected] attention: Blandon ta
(Samsung Galaxy NOTE 4 )is there any charging issue after last update 6.0.1 in July (slow charging ) i think it happed to my phone slow charging after last update ????

Nexus 6p Mobile hotspot not working properly (T-mobile)

Have searched extensively and found no working solution to this issue. Return would be a last and unwanted resort. Here's the deal. Mobile Hotspot performs strangely no matter what android version I run. In marshmallow it would turn off during use. In nougat it would just crash and need to be restarted. It most reliably occurs when playing lan minecraft over 2 comps on the hotspot but will still have the issue randomly even when only 1 device is connected. Many calls to various companies have all resulted in "send it back in". This is infuriating as this feels like a software issue not a hardware issue, I just can't see how it can be any other way. I have tried everything I could think of and had no luck, here's the list of what i've tried so far:
Restart phone
Factory reset
update to latest firmware
downgrade back to original marshmallow firmware
there is no access to advanced settings for hotspot so timeout is non-existant
reset network settings
edit: also tried ElementX kernel still have the same problem
tried flash-all to stock Marshmallow firmware without restoring apps or settings
RMA TWICE
etc. (any others I've forgotten that I did I will edit and add if ppl suggest it)
Nothing works, before I downgraded back to MM I did capture a bug report when the crash happened on latest nougat. I have no idea if I caught relevant info but will include the zip here anyway. Any help is massively appreciated.
Flash the correct factory images using google flash-all method (backup data first or remove -w in the script!). Upon startup do NOT restore settings apps etc.. and test.
If it doesn't work post a bug report on google website.

if it wasn't clear in my post I was at factory default and the problem occurred and have restored and erased a few times. If the method you're describing is different form having out of the box stock please elaborate, I only flashed a kernel recently as a further last resort.
By not restoring settings are you referring to not allowing google backups to restore? and finally if you can provide a link to where exactly I am to post this bug report I would appreciate it, I have posted in what I thought was official channels with a bug report and was told to call in, which is stupid, considering if I leave a bug report why not read it and get back to me?
Anyways thanks for reply and any further info you give

Finally got back from vacation and had time to try your request. used flash-all method and did not restore any apps or settings and hotspot still did not work. any other info or at least a link to where I should post a bug report to google as I have used the report function through the device and have posted on nexus help forums and not received answers. I really don't want to have to do an rma as I hate the thought of receiving a refurb phone when I wanted a brand new one and they sent me a broken one
well all is officially lost as I am in the process of doing an RMA. Multiple phone calls between carrier and manufacturer see each company blaming the other with no solution in sight. Fingers crossed hard enough to bleed that somehow a new phone or any "repairs" done to mine will fix the issue. Come back in a few weeks for an update. :crying:
I would confirm with T-Mobile that your line is provisioned with Tethering. When testing an AT&T SIM from a friends UDP (no tethering) account, this is what would happen. My T-Mobile and Verizon accounts both allow it, so it just works.

I have tethering on my account and have had it for 2 years. worked flawlessly on other devices before switching to this one. It also doesn't explain why it could work for hours at a time before failing. Or why it would consistently fail within minutes when playing LAN minecraft.
Well Huaweii has been an absolute joke, after 3 weeks of terrible communication and no transparency I finally received my phone in the mail (no email notification on if it is a replacement device or not) and the issue still persists. I'm at a loss for what to do.

Samsung Galaxy S8 - Oreo Update Truncated Password

Hello all,
I have a unique issue where the most recent Android update caused my password to be truncated from 20 digits to 16 - now it won’t let me login to the phone when the phone starts up. I have 6 attempts left for a factory rest, whereby I lose all my data!
Samsung can’t help because I wasn’t logged into the Google Play Store, and this was a new phone and I haven’t backed up in about 2 weeks. I would like my data back, but that isn’t an option per Samsung, where I heard about this group.
Is there anyway to get my data back? And bypass this update to roll back without being able to login?
Dr. Fone won’t work because I didn’t have the USB Debugging option turned on. I can get into the boot menu, but have little recourse after that. This is a Hail Mary for anyone that might’ve experienced this or has thoughts on how to get my phone back on. Thanks in advance for reading!
And why would Google do this?! At least a big warning would’ve been helpful!
Best.
