How are the custom ROMs? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Just curious. Thinking of buying one of these to replace my deceased MXP.
How is the custom ROM quality? Often something is a little wonky like the cameras or some sensors/inputs don't work or are a little funky or slow. It's hard to pick up the current state of ROMs from browsing the forums. Any feedback would be much appreciated.
HEY Mods! If one of you happens to notice this, please move thread to Q&A. I swear Chrome ate that section when I first browsed this device's forum page. Apparently I can't report my own thread. I'll show myself out.

I think the only thing that doesn't work currently is the "ok Google" hot word.
I personally haven't used any of them yet.

[Q] Can we use softkey backlight for notifications?

I see it has been done for the international version I9000, but our buttons are different. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=772672
I think it would be great if the home key backlight pulsed on notification.
Anyone know how to implement something like this?
A small led pulsing would go a long way toward saving my precious battery life, instead of periodically turning the screen on to check for new messages.
Yes. There is backlight notification mod for our phone. However, I tried several versions(10-32seconds) and could not get the backlight to turn off until I cleared the notification. I believe it only works with certain kernels and ROMs.
It can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=826278
I have that installed, it just keeps the lights on longer for the softkey buttons.
What I would like to see is one of the softkeys like home pulse with the screen off when a new notification arrives, like the nexus one trackball notifications.
Anyone?
birdman's "barebones" kernel in this very forum supports backlight notifications
I have a handful of kernels on rom manager that support bln also
please stop posting questions in the dev forums!!!
Where would you suggest the question be posted. It's not a general question and it's not a theme/app...maybe BLN is now an accessory?

How about instead of posting questions that are already answered... you search. Much easier for everyone else to deal with.

What is this "attitude" crap? You're the one breaking the rules of the forum. Don't ***** when people point this out.

hop on rom manager and look under jt1334 in the downloads section..
Maybe if the search function here worked I would have found the answer to my question. I obviously dont post much so I seem to know how to be resourceful.
In this case I thought we could all benefit in getting some sort of proper notification system working on the Fascinate. The kernel mod seems to light up all the keys then go out 30 seconds later. I was wondering if it was possible to just get the "home" button to pulse like it did on my nexus one (obviously not in color).
Sorry I am not a dev, I have a life outside of android, windows mobile, and IOS, but I am definately not a noob.
Anyway its been nice chatting with all of you open minded developers working on this open platform. Mods please close this thread as it seems the developers just want to be rockstars in their own little threads, and scream "search!!!" and "noob" in all the others.
Thanks for all your help...
Don't bite the hand that feeds...
XDA is a Developers forum - not a tech support forum. There are dozens of other android forums on the Internet for that. The developers here share their work for free here and grow tired of answering the same questions over and over. The Development Forum is getting so overrun with non-development threads that it's hard to find ROM, Kernel, and App releases.
EDIT: In fact it's grown so bad that some developers aren't even releasing there work here anymore. That is why you received a "lecture".
I dont think I bit any hand, I said I appreciated the work jt did on the clean rom, and in fact I am using it right now. I think a lot of these guys on the forum are brilliant and I dont generally ask for help or any type of hand holding. Im a big boy with a job and I take chances, if I kill a phone so be it, thats why I have insurance and a warranty.
I just wanted to start a discussion and see if an idea of mine was feasable. I must have asked the wrong question, at the wrong time, in the wrong forum. -Sorry guys!
Man, and I thought the ios guys were douchebags, I guess douchebagginess is carrier dependent here since I never had a problem in the Nexus One forums. Go Verizon!

"Sorry guys" --- then you go about calling us douchbags? or did i read this wrong? There is a little X button towards the top right of the screen.... press it.
I didnt call you anything, but this is getting childish. Someone delete this thread please.
blah........
There seems to be some confusion here so allow me to answer the question and end the cat fight in one shot. There are in fact TWO different backlight mods for the Fascinate. The one you currently have is the Extended Softkey Backlights, which simply extends the amount of time your softkeys stay lit during normal operation. There is also a mod called Backlight Notifications, which does exactly what you are asking for. It is implemented in jt1134's kernels, amongst others.
As for posting location, the others are correct that this question should have been posted in general, not dev. There was just a major post from the mods specifically about this issue.

Thank you for taking the time to clear things up gardndj, will definately check out the backlight notification mod.
Now that this is in the right place, I should note that you don't want the standalone BLN mod, which is i9000-only. You need one of jt1134's kernels with BLN built in, which are only available on ROM manager.

[Q] Lets Get Serious Here Guys

every since this phone was announced these threads have been sprinked with useless garbage, generally speaking.
please clean up your stuff, one guy was complaining how there is lag on his nexus S after 62+ apps. Get a grip, child. compared it to his nexus one...which had well over 100 apps. this is nonsense and i dont find it as a gauge to compare anything...sounds just dumb.
gripe. but gripe right. for instance.
nexus s is an official google phone. yet i had to MANUALLY get all their apps, google ones that is, not to mention my market didnt upgrade STILL on its own. weird how i had to literally type out the market apps to find its upgrades in stuff i had.
EVERYTHING i had to get. which simply BAFFLES me since my tmobile G2 had everything pushed instantly.
Secondly, rockplayer....PLEASE WORK..i neeed to see movies. all the codes needed to be updated now...god dammit.
I guess this what its like to have a google only phone? i dont know, i dont get it. i find this phone incredibly gorgeous and have gotten alot of compliments. going to miss my nexus one but its the next of kin..im off contract still..my 3g is faastt 4.3mb-5.1mb always. idk..just clean up your talk
Good point, I have noticed a lot of useless fluff everywhere, but over time that will probably disappear as more and more devs are able to release NS mods and roms which, if popular, will push all the useless threads back down the que. But that still doesn't solve the problem, so I will add my support behind this.
Some tips to avoid posting useless posts
1. Use common sense: lag after 62+ apps, maybe more are running in the background, or more intensive? Think!
2. Google/search it: more and more people are getting this phone, so maybe you will find another post like yours, with an answer already in it!
3. Try and fix the problem yourself: with the lag example, maybe try the task manager and see if anything is hogging resources? That seems quite easy to do, no?
Then maybe it's a good idea to post a thread.
Never mind posting in the right section... Seriously, the development section is overflowing with threads that belong into general. Ironically, this thread is a prime example. It doesn't help that the mods (whoever and wherever you guys are) seem to be non-existing in this forum. Whosdaman has been doing a great job keeping the MT4G forum organized while at the same time helping people understand what belongs where. Where are our mods and how come there still isn't a Q&A section?

I don't know, I find it kind of amusing that a guy with a whopping two whole posts in 5 months to his name is going to start a thread saying most other posts on the forums are useless garbage. Seems kind of pretentious to me.
I'm all for SEARCHING before starting a new thread, and SEARCHING before asking the same question in a thread that's already been asked and answered a dozen times. I'm all for READING FAQ and READING STICKY POSTS before posting questions. I'm all for POSTING IN THE RIGHT SECTION.
And to the OP, I'm all for USING A PROPERLY DESCRIPTIVE THREAD TITLE. Yours gives no indication about what you're really discussing in here. Something like "Let's keep this forum on-topic" or similar would be much more appropriate in my opinion. You also marked this as a QUESTION, and it's not. Very poor topic titling...
On the other side of that coin, I'm not sure I'm qualified, or anyone else besides moderators, to say you're question/post was too stupid to have been made, go away. Sheesh, we're here to help and learn off each other; that kind of attitude isn't conducive to a helpful environment. It leads to the kind of cesspool that our sister device's (the Vibrant) forum turned into where there's so much sniping and hatred at everyone that several high-profile devs have left.
Is it just me that I think the OP is also a useless gripe?

I applaud you're ability to find your own answers, but yes, your OP here was a bit pretentious in my opinion.
It's pretentious because you assume that your judgment of what is and is not a value-added post is the only accurate one while at the same time you make the very same mistakes that you're criticizing. You posted in what some might consider the wrong section, with the wrong topic title, and marked the thread as as a question despite the fact that there is not a single question in your post. Then you threw in insults to others by saying their posts and opinions on lag are dumb, and then went on to about four different issues that aren't related to your original subject.
The original premise of your OP was that we shouldn't clutter the forum with irrelevant posts, but then you did that very same thing with your post. It's certainly ironic, if not pretentious.
I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, just amused at the pot calling the kettle black situation here. This thread should die.
Well, you know the drill: MY concerns are serious bidness; YOUR concerns are frivolous garbage.
I restored 87 apps with Titanium Backup. No lag whatsoever. Everything runs smooth like butter. Much smoother than when I had the Vibrant. So that person obviously installed something to make it lag.
Man did I **** up. Haha. Sorry man.Your my boy regardless.

tried the customs, but Stock seems to be working best.

Guess what. After trying about 10 custom roms (2.2 and 2.3) the past several months and experiencing various issues with each one of them, I tried stock rooted 2.2 and removed some annoying apps, and it is great. Everything works (4g, 3g...) Gmail works as promised (no mails stuck in outbox like I get with the most recent Fresh) signal is strong, the camera focuses properly, and the battery actually lasts LONGER than it does with CM7, SavageMod, Sprint Lovers, etc. I know the customs are all tweaked up, but the stock rooted is 0% slower in terms of everyday use. (I do not use test bench scores because they have little bearing on what the phone actually feels like to use.)
Stock is better in many ways than any of the customs I have tried. No joke.(Once some of the Sprint junk has been removed of course.)
Try it for yourself.
Just sayin'.

I personally am not a fan of Sense anymore after Salvage. It's basically pure Gingerbread 2.3 with no extra added junk EXCEPT 4G WiMax. Runs smooth as butter, and couldn't ask for anything else. Bugless too, not counting HDMI which no one uses...
Have you tried Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo? In my experience it is the most stable Sense rom, while also being extremely fast and great on battery life. I get anywhere from 30-16 hours depending on how much I use it and what I'm doing/how my reception is. Lots of eye candy too. Not sure what errors you have been encountering..but everything works as it should with Myn's. Have you tried custom kernels? Netarchy's kernel has given me the best battery life and performance, I have been using setcpu with the smartass governor. On a side note I have been using Salvage Mod since wimax was added and it's freaking awesome!

113 posts, a member here for a year, and you post this non-sense in the development section.
That alone tells me you have no idea what you are doing so why the heck would I take advice from you.
Stock evo really isn't all that bad. I would get a better optimized kernel instead of the stock kernel, but that's about it. I run EchoHD on mine for now, since I haven't had any issues with it with Revol, but I mess around with gingerbread and CM7 with it from time to time. CM7 I easily have nice battery life in, but I can't use it with my network sadly. =\
I was in the same situation ..... I think the problem is when You flash a new ROM you should give it some time to settle down. I use to install all the available MODS and themes plus 50 different apps right away ending up messing the whole system. Now I don't flash new fonts, tweaks, mods right away with a fresh ROM but then again it's just me, a novice user with very limited knowledge. I have been using FROST ROM for a month and it has been very stable ... although there are few new awesome looking ROMS just came out ( King's Ultra R2, Warm Z, Salvage MOD 1.0 etc ...) that are very tempting. I am to the verge of flashing a new one, it's just hard to pick one. After seeing all these insane ROMS who would go back to stock ... ! NOT ME.

^^Exactly This^^
My experience with Myns was ok - used it for about a month. But it had battery issues, and more importantly it would randomly lose 3g connectivity for maybe 30-60 seconds at a time. Same problem with Fresh. This is terribly annoying if you are browsing web pages. You end up clicking on a link 20 times trying to get it to load properly.
I was most recently using CM7 and it works well except the battery drain is just silly. And I know I am not the only one with battery drain on CM7.
The thing is, it seems there are always drawbacks with the customs. Some of the drawbacks are deal breakers like losing 3g, or botching the gmail app.
So while the developers are doing some awesome work (much appreciated!) when I step back a few paces, I realize that I have not gained much in real world usability, and I have often sacrificed stability or functionality for some minor gains which are often not noticeable without the use if benchmark tests.
I tend to agree with OP
I too have flashed many ROMS, and have also found best overall performance with a basically stock ROM. I say "basically stock," because I run RicSims 3.70 Turbo, which is supposedly mostly stock but with minor performance tweaks.
I run the stock HTC #15 Kernel included in ROM and, along with Seido 3500 Ext Batt, experience phenomenal battery life (see some of my other posts for results/screenshots).
I just recently tried a CM7 2.3 GB ROM w/ working WIMAX, and while everything worked perfectly (along with awesome Linpack and Quadrant scores), the battery life just wasn't there, so I went back to trusty Ricsims ROM (although I still have CM7 w/ WIMAX backed up via Nandroid, and can switch back and forth within 15 or 20 minutes, should I get the itch).

Since you posted this in the wrong section, I would make one suggestion to you. Just stop replying to this thread until it gets moved and let it die, or you are going to continue to get flamed. I have already tagged it to be moved to the correct section, and I am sure others have as well. Just please try to pay a little more attention next time before you post. I could flame you but I am not going to. Usually its understandable but NOT okay to post questions in the dev forums, but your original post is going to get ya alot of negativity, I am not really sure what the point of it was?

Honestly, "Mr. Yellow" has done what everyone else in this thread should have done, by kindly pointing out that the thread is okay, its great to share his experience, but he posted it in the wrong forum. So "Mr. Yellow" shouldn't be flamed. And if you flame the OP, you're honestly just as bad as to committing to this thread with nonsense.
Great statement OP regarding your set up, just please, next time, post threads of this manner in the general/q&a, as the development section is for developing roms, kernels and things of the such.
There has been talk of general about not allowing the creation of a thread in development if the person has less than 20 posts.
I believe this topic is proof that that will not work. I see what Mr. Yellow is saying. He makes a point. This should not have gone here. The OP mentioned no question was asked. But there was also no development. That's what General is for.
These topics piss people like me and Mr. Yellow off. This section gets cluttered with all this and it doesn't stop. It's getting old.

Suggestion: Dead ROM Section

The title says it all really.
There are loads of ROM threads that are dead and obviously so that still get bumped to the top for one reason or another.
There have been a lot of ROMs being pushed out lately and only in an initial release as the DEV immediately moved on to something else leaving the ROM\thread basically dead only to be bumped over and over. Then you have the others where the DEV just vanishes leaving the threads to again be bumped over and over.
Could these threads be moved to a DEAD section where they are still accessible is some one wanted to flash or even try to continue the work that was started? This would free up the DEV section of clutter and not push the currently viable and supported ROMs down the list.
Also if a ROM is in the DEAD section it would be more noticeable this it is dead and don't bump it for an update.
Just a suggestion and my 2c.
If you think about it, there are around 50+ pages to search through. The amount of Roms still being worked on is roughly 2-3 pages.. so if you want a 45 page dead section.. by all means, go ahead and search for days. If you're looking for a Rom you know the name of and Devs name, use the search bar at the top. Narrow your search by a good amount. Its unnecessary but start a petition if you desire. I'm sure you could get a decent following and be heard by a senior mod or some major contributor.

I think this would discourage a dev from coming back to a ROM months or years later. Its pretty easy to tell what ROMs are active and which are not. Be a shame to see Myn's Warm 2.2 in a section like that. One of the greatest ROMs ever, swap back radios and its still one of the best. But then again, for some reason people do act like its too much to search and read a little.
"Hey, that's not a bug, that's a feature!" Linus Torvalds, 2001
This is a horrible idea! Just like Jamie said, is not that hard to tell what ROM is dead and what ROM is still active.
BUT playing devil's advocate, let's just say we DO get a "dead ROM" section.......who's going to set the time limit on a ROM? Do we say is dead after a couple of weeks of it not being active? Do we base this decision on how long is been for updates?
IF this idea actually becomes reality, what's next? A "POPULAR ROM" section and a "NOT POPULAR" section? I think if is not broken, don't mess with it! BUT who knows, crazier stuff have happened on XDA.
this idea obviously came from someone who does nothing but flash roms and gave no real thought to this. how about this for an idea instead: how about you not be allowed to re release an old rom that has not been updated or improved by starting a new thread for it? why wouldn't you just keep the old thread in place and just change the name of your thread title to reflect that it's the same exact old ROM? are you really so desperate for some notoriety and xda acceptance? that's right I said it.
ridiculous.
What did the five fingers say to the face? Sa la ppa.
No going to happen guys, if a rom goes unsupported, either the community picks up the effort or it drops down never to be seen again.
If people are bumping dead roms with stupid posts, report it and it will be dealt with, simple :good:
I'm going to close this as I don't really see any need to keep it open

Far too cluttered Development section

Hey there guys!
I really hate to do this because I do (most of the time) enjoy browsing on XDA and keeping myself up-to-date about most devices I own but with the S6 lately it's getting far too annoying, hard and kinda weird...
The development section here is far too cluttered with unuseful custom ROMs where literally most do the same and/or are worse than others, Kernels, Apps, hacks, tweaks, ... you get what I mean.
Reading threads or finding a (new) custom ROM that fits your needs is by far too complicated here since, when you think you found a good one, another one comes around the corner or another user recommends you another ROM and so on, a never ending story… Comparing different ROMs never comes to quite a good end here either…
I own a few Android devices and I've never experienced such a thing happening, I mean yes there are many threads for different ROMs there too but at least they manage to get a good overview of what they try to do better as example, also there aren't at least 5 new ROM threads started per week.
Anyways, just my few cents here. Have fun hating on me or something if you'd like so or try to give suggestions on "how to fight through this cluttered mess" the best way. It's just extremely annoying because I and a few other S6 owners I've asked just try to avoid XDA by the sheer mess which was created here.
Well, I kindly disagree with your opinion: for me there is not something like too much development, having more choice is always a good thing. Coming from a OnePlus One I'm accustomed to tens of ROMs to choose from.
That said my advice to help choosing a custom ROM without having to read too much is: go with the ROM whose thread have the most answers (XtreStoLite); a lot of people usually don't do soo big mistakes.
It's the same for pretty much every other phone. Nothing unique to the S6.
Sent from my SM-G920W8
Lol, and here I am, thinking the dev scene for our S6 is stone dead.
It all relative, of course. I'm coming from the OPO as well so I'm used to seeing A LOT more activity.
