[Q] Nexus 10 its over the TF700?

What do you think?

The TF700 is a terrible scam.. sorry, but this thing doesn't even work beyond something from the early naughties. It's seriously underpowered, and for an expensive tab it has some bloody cheap internals - Tegra 3 is 2 years old, it was never meant to power a 1080p screen for much more than movies. If you want proof, 1080p is one of the things they're touting with the Tegra 3+. So just grab a Nexus. It has a better screen, anyway.
My first phone was this Samsung brick thing back in 2007, and it could play music. The Infinity can't even do that without it dropping out or stuttering all the time thanks to its terrible NAND.

I think Kookas went of the deep end. TF700 isn't that bad. I think it has been the best 10 inch Android tablet until the Nexus 10 arrives. And the first Tegra 3 device (Transformer Prime I think) came out early this year, so the Tegra 3 isn't that old.
However, unless you NEED a keyboard, I see no reason to buy an Infinity now. Nexus 10 has much better specs and a stock Nexus software experience.

Best Android tab until now isn't really saying much, and actually in terms of specs the Note 10.1 completely surpasses it aside from the screen resolution.
Trust me, it is an absolutely horrific device. It's laggy as all hell while the Nexus 10 does that awesome resolution like a pro. Asus doesn't deserve a penny.

Because of the resolution alone it has to be the N10, it's going to look gorgeous.

I don't use the keyboard dock, nor do I really care to own one. I have a laptop to do any content creation, which I don't do on the go anyway. I'll be using it as a pure consumption device around the house, and it seems like a better fit for me. I even plan to pick up the 16GB model and save a few dollars.
That said, anyone comparing the two devices "Apples to Apples" is just wrong. They appeal to two VERY different types of users, and in my opinion don't even really fall into the same category other than "Android Tablets". The TF700 isn't a bad tablet, and overall I enjoyed using it (CleanROM 2.3 + Data2SD changed my life). No reason for everyone to bash it, it may be the most versatile Android Tablet around for some time and it keeps getting better."

Nexus 7 (2013) or LG G Pad 8.3?

I'm about to sell my Nexus 10 to buy a smaller tablet. The Nexus 10 is great but it's too big to use comfortably daily. Playing games is almost impossible and holding the tablet in portrait it's too uncomfortable.
I've narrowed it down to the new Nexus 7 or the upcoming LG G Pad 8.3. I prefer the LG because 8 inches seems to be the perfect screen size for gaming, video playback, web browsing and PDF reading.
The Nexus 7 has great price, updates, great stock experience and it's already available. But I feel I would get tired of the small screen too quickly. Reading PDFs would be almost impossible, as well as web browsing.
I've been thinking about it for days and still can't decide.
Do you guys that own the Nexus 7 feel the screen is too small after a few months with it? I'll be using the new tablet at home always. I think the LG is great because it's the first 8 inch tablet with 1080P screen. The snapdragon 600 inside is also better and the battery is bigger also, but I know I wouldn't get updates. This wouldn't be too much of a problem if the tablet works for me. I think I could keep an 8 inch tablet longer than a 7.

No. In fact I think the size is perfect. Its wide enough to hold in one hand comfortably (portrait). It fits in my front jeans pocket (barely). Big enough to do whatever on.
The N7 uses an under clocked S600. It has updated cores and GPU. I don't know why they called it an S4 Pro. So speed wise you will see very little difference.
LG never supports their products. It will probably come out with 4.2.2 just as we're getting 4.4. They have horrible update schedules. You're lucky to get one OS update before EOL. Development on them are also lacking. They usually come locked without an easy way to unlock. The LG G2 is rooted by a special method but remains locked.
It will probably never see an update past 4.4
I wouldn't pick a LG device unless I gave it several months to settle and see where it ends up with updates and dev. They make some great hardware but really botch up the software and support. The G2 seems like a great phone out of the box but will be left in the dust in a few months. Take your chances with their tablet but think about one thing:
How well will you like it in a year when the N7 has the latest and greatest Android (5.0?) and cool ROMs and mods, and you're stuck on an iffy modified stock rom with no support?
I left the Nexus line once, and it was rough.
The 7" is very nice because you want to downsize for toting. It fits easier into your coat pockets and lighter. 7 and 8 inches aren't that different unless you are comparing. Standalone you won't even notice the difference.

Actually the N7's 7 inch display isn't too small for PDF and web browsing. Given its retina grade PPI, words are crisp even when they are zoomed out. I've been using it for my classes which I read PDF PowerPoint slides on daily basis, and I am happy with it. :good:
7 inch is also the largest you can get for comfortable 1 hand use with portrait mode. 8 inch tablets has to be held with 2 hands even in portrait.

You lay down, put tablet on your belly. Can be held with one hand...
So size doesn't matter.
Reading? n7 is good... No more headaches.
Oh well go with n7 and next year maybe a nexus8 will come out.

It sounds like you've answered your own question, you find 7" tablets to small. Both are excellent tablets, you can't really go wrong with either of them.
I've not used a Nexus 7 but have used a Galaxy Tab 2 7" and I thought the size was great for what it was, small, pocketable but 7" tablets are rather small for day to day use (they're fine for reading PDFs though, Kindles are even smaller).
Personally I find 10" tablets to big.
For me the iPad Mini is pretty much the perfect tablet size but Apple products interest me not. I was interested in the Galaxy Tab 3 8" but oddly for Samsung their Galaxy Tab specs are low. I understand both the Galaxy Tab 3 8" and LG G Pad 8.3 are roughly the same size and crucially aspect ratio as the iPad Mini.
It's the wider nature of 8" tablets that interest me and of course the LG G Pad 8.3 is a much better tablet than the Galaxy Tab 3 8".
Sure I doubt LG will upgrade the version of Android much (if at all), their track record is poor but you know what Android 4.2.2 is already a decent version of Android and it's not as if Android 4.3/4.4 add much.
Yes not getting Android 5.0 (possibly) would irk me but it's all about the size and aspect ratio with a tablet for me and 8" tablets are the "sweet spot". Plus I like the look of QSlide, it doesn't look as useful as Samsung's Multi-Window but is the next best thing. Being able to display two apps at once on a tablet is genuinely useful.
p.s - IMO this whole phones/tablets not getting the latest Android version is overrated, you've still bought a decent product (hopefully) and the past few Android upgrades have been minor anyway. Android 4.0 came out 2 years ago!

I had the Nexus 7(2013) and returned it because of the nonfunctional GPS and random reboot issues. From what I understand, the GPS now works, but the reboot issues persist, and some still complain of multitouch issues.
I've got the LG G2 and it's the best phone I've ever owned. With that said, I'm looking forward to the G Pad. The Q-Pair software looks really slick, in that you can tether to your phone(supposedly any Android phone) for a data connection with one click. It will also send and receive texts and phone calls from a connected phone.
As to the comments about one handed use, the G Pad is a hair under 1/2" wider than the Nexus 7, thanks to the thin bezel. LG supposedly studied average hand sizes to come up with comfortable overall dimensions.
I'd say if you want the bleeding edge latest-greatest version of Android, and can live with the smaller screen, Asus build quality, and random reboots, go with the Nexus 7.
If you don't mind slow or no software updates, but want a bigger screen, most likely superior build quality, and hopefully no random reboots, go with the G Pad 8.3. That said, I'd still wait for it to hit the market to see if any serious issues surface.

I'm in the same situation as you. I currently have the nexus 7 and love the screen quality and all. It's good for reading super small texts but I've always felt like 8 inch screen was the perfect size. I'm waiting to see when the lg comes out and the price. If it's $299, that's a bargain and I'm probably gonna sell my nexus 7 and get the LG. I'm not too worried about software with the LG because I know I'm gonna end up rooting it and installing AOSP on it eventually.
Also I feel like the nexus 7 doesn't have a great build quality. my nexus 7 most likely has a grounding issue (ie: I have touches not registering when I place it flat on my bed or table) but who knows maybe lg will have the same problem. I would say wait for lg to come out, play with it, then make your decision

LG is terrible with releasing updates for their products. I'd actually wait a bit to see if the dev community does anything for it. I had a phone from them that they basically stopped doing updates for a month after it was released, rendering it useless. I had bought it on the basis that they were going to release an update for it, and after a year, they didn't.

My Nexus 7 2013 have been great, and have neither multitouch or random reboot issues. If the Gpad can be rooted/unlocked/restored as easily as Nexus 7 and have a Dev community just as large I might consider it. Otherwise I prefer the Nexus 7.

I have an N7 2013 running PA to get the Tablet UI, which I feel works much better than Phablet mode (lots more real estate).
I do feel the N7 bezels are a waste and would much prefer an 8" tablet with much smaller bezels. I had an iPad mini before the N7 (my wife has it now!) and as much as iOS is boring, it worked much better as a tablet in terms of its size. So I'm thinking the LG would close that gap.
Like others, however, I feel it would need to be BL unlockable to make the switch. I have hope only because it's a WiFi only device, thus no carriers to be beholden to.

LG G Pad 8.3 to be available October 14th in Korea and other markets by the end of the year.

I love the new N7. I just got rid of my iPad 3, it was big and of course boring. I'm not experiencing any of those issues, I rooted and unlocked it straight outta the box, still running stock ROM. It's great for web browsing and everything else of course. I personally think this is the best tablet on the market. You can't go wrong with price, usability and support from Google and XDA.

For on the go, I like the 2013 N7. My 2012 got really laggy even after the update. There are a few bugs still with the touch response, but its better now. Ill still use an iPad 3 at home, mainly because the wife prefers Apple. The LG looks like it could be nice, but not for the rumor prices.

It's really about the tradeoff you want to make. The new N7 is great and it wins where Nexus devices win: frequent updates, freedom to flash and competitive pricing. If you're a person (like me) who likes to muck about a lot, there's no alternative. With non-Nexus devices, I think you have to ask yourself if you're potentially comfortable with that device as-is for the entire time you own it. If it never got a new feature or the newest OS base and the like, would you be satisfied with the purchase? If you feel good saying yes to that, it sounds to me like the screen size is a big feature for you, so I'd go that way. If you're putting your faith in an OEM to fix or improve software, there's history to support the conclusion that you will generally be disappointed, as a rule of thumb. Just go into the purchase with your eyes open to that likely scenario and you'll be fine.

Today I went to a store to try again the Nexus 7 and I think I'm sold. Great screen, great materials, very nice to hold with one hand, stock android, etc. Then I tried the Note 8.0 and Tab 3 8.0 and they felt heavier and my hand got tired much quickly than with the Nexus 7. Screen was not that bad, but comparing touchwiz to stock on the Nexus 7 showed me again stock is better for a tablet.
I'm not gonna wait for the LG. Will try the Nexus 7 for a week and see how that goes.

Fistly, for comparing, we must try in hand G8.
I bought a month ago N7 lte, and now thinking to try G8, and if it will be the same in tactical feelings i prefer 8 inch vs 7 inch.
10 inches is big for mobility, 7 - small for reading. 8 - best compromise.
And of course, price is one more important factor.

This tablet is great. Bought it today to replace my Nexus 10, which is a great tablet but I just can't use it comfortably holding it for hours. Too heavy and big. Playing games was impossible, as doing almost everything else.
I wasn't quite sure about 7 inches, but after a couple of hours playing with the device I can say it's great. It's AWESOME being able to hold the tablet with one hand for long periods of time without problems.
The screen is even better than the one in my Nexus 10: more bright and better colors. It just pops out.
The performance is great also. It may be slightly slightly faster and more fluid. It's great having such a good GPU: the adreno 320. I've gotalso more RAM available now, since with the Nexus 10 we were losing more and more RAM with every update Google released. They were giving more memory to the GPU and in the end I only had 500MB free. Now I have 1,2GB! This is after all apps installed and everything obviously.
It's so light and comfortable. In the end this is the most important feature.
I'm super impressed with the quality of the speakers! So loud and clear! I got the 32GB model for 249. Great price.
I can definitely see that Google has put more care in the software performance of this device than on the Nexus 10. Performance is consistent, no lags, no reboots or freezes for now. Even touch response is better than on the Nexus 10. Trust me.
I can finally play games comfortably and do everything without having to hold in my hands such a huge tablet. No more 9 inch tablets or bigger for me thanks. Even 8 inches seems big now. I actually tried the Note 8.0 and Tab 3 8.0 on the store before buying the Nexus 7 and they weren't as comfortable to hold as the Nexus 7. The plastic was horrible and it slips out of my hands. Touchwiz didn't perform half as quick and smooth as stock on the Nexus 7.
This is the best experience I've had with Android definitely. Can't imaging how Google will be able to improve this hardware anymore in the next versions. The materials are excellent, screen can't be better, loud speakers... and I'm even getting great battery life.
Now just waiting for 4.4. So happy right now. Selling my Nexus 10 this week.

That's the conversion price. you can't go off of that because the US price will be different from the won price. example: the note 8 has the same won price as the lg g pad but only costed $400 in the US. the ipad mini was 640,000 won (vs 650,000 for note 8 and lg g pad) and only costed $329 in the US. only way to tell the true cost will be to wait until they release that info for the US, which is after South Korea so next!

I'm still happy with my purchase and the deal I got on it ($259 USD via Newegg). The Samsung Pro 8.4 is the only one that makes me blink. Faster chip, good. Marginally larger battery to deal with the screen, bad. Touchwiz, higher resolution screen, meh. The G Pad, for its meager shortcomings, offers a heckuva lot of bang for the buck, at the price I got it anyway. Not regretting it!

Lol yeah I missed that deal I live in New jersey so payed tax $300 so if it's around $300 -$350 I would be all for it lol. My gpad comes tomorrow so well see I guess. It should have pretty good development support and accessories.

I feel the same. The 8.4 inch display model is pretty sweet.. Pricing may be a bit higher, so again.. I wouldn't buy it just cause of that. And the 3 hardware buttons on the front is a no go. It's old and I don't like it as much as having a blank screen where it's just me and the screen/movie/book.. The over all design looks good ol' fashion Samsung. Looks sturdy and has kindof a Galaxy S2 feel to it. The S2 was the best mobile phone I've ever had. Damn a lot of stuff happened back then. But yeah, looks like a decent tablet. But I think I'll be quite happy with the G Pad still, since it does have what I'm looking for in a nice, cheap package and decent build quality.

The Samsung Exynos 5 Octa CPU is a new gen processor which samsung tries to make it use all eight cores at once. If a tablet with that chip comes out it will surely be very powerful and definitely better than gpad.

As long as Samsung uses a home button i will never buy again.I'm very happy with the pad.

The new Touch Wiz looks really awful. I don't even know what they're thinking. It's like they want it to work and look like Windows 8 but don't want to use Windows 8. Personally I wouldn't touch the new tabs with a 10 foot pole.

I am an owner of note 10.1 2012 ..... I am looking up to
Change my tab as there is no updates for it at all ... Till now it is on version 4.1.2 and it is 100% guaranteed now after these pro tablets unveiled there will be no updates for the older devices ... I wont buy any of these new pro tablets because of the price firstly and in the future they will be thrown to the dust like my note 10.1 now ..... Also i am thinking of getting lg g pad 8.3 but no software updates like my current note and lack of dev support keeps me away

I'd be very surprised if the 8.4 was less than $399. I'm sure Samsung considers it to be fully equivalent to the newest iPad mini. Samsung used to compete on price but no more. When I bought my first plasma TV in 2007 Samsung was a much better deal than Panasonic or Pioneer. When it came time to buy another one last year I thought Samsung was too expensive and bought an LG I'm very happy with.

Quite simply, I am going to switch to a Tab Pro 8.4 as soon as it is available.
It has a way better display, it has NFC (which I miss), it's way more powerful (G Pad is pretty slow), it has a polycarbonate back (I dislike the faux leather, I would much rather have a rubber back like the Nexus 7 2013 or the old Samsung HyperGlaze but anything is WAY, WAY better than effing METAL!!!!) and the Samsung one is the best version of Android around (MultiWindow *alone* would do it for me).
I can't wait to get my hands on it.
P.S. Actually, the ONLY reason I am interested in mid-sized tablets (8"/8.5") is WEIGHT.
Anything beyond 350/400 grams is simply too heavy to be ergonomic and truly comfortable for extended use.
The new Samsung Tab Pro 10.1" is 469grams and I am planning on trying it out with the intention of switching back to a 10.1"...
Ideally, my perfect tablet would be something like the Note Pro 12.2" but would weigh no more than 400 grams with an all-day battery life... (which is, of course, not technically possible. YET).

Pretty Slow? Try CM 11, Stock is slow. Switching from G Pad to Notepro 8.4 seems useless to me.
I am sort of disappointed that the G Pad is no longer the best 8 incher but it's still pretty great so its fine...

I doubt I will bite. I like my LG 8.3 GPE a lot. Samsung does this to me every year: announce something that captures my imagination, I'm intrigued, I convince myself it will be at a palatable price point, and then finally delivers something I consider too expensive and doesn't hit the sweet spot for my tastes.
I do own a Galaxy Note 10.1, and I love it. But the 2014 edition left me a bit cold.
I doubt I will dip into these waters again, probably just upgrading to a new Nexus 10 when the timing feels right.

I'm very happy with my G Pad and won't switch. If the Samsung 8.4 was available a couple of weeks ago at a competitive price I would have taken it, simply due to previous experience with both LG and Samsung phones. I like the idea of hard buttons on the bezel - means more screen space. There will also be more development on the Samsung tablets.

The G Pad with CM11 or the G Pad GPE are surely faster but you would have to give up, among other things, Knock On, the IR Remote and full SDcard support and those are huge deal breakers for me.
True, LG's ROM is most certainly slower and laggier than stock Android but it's also way more feature complete (which is probably also *why* is slower...). Features that I do use.
Besides the ones just mentioned, there are dozens of things like Quickmemo, the overlay apps (QSlide), the keyboard with the numbers row, the volume and brightness sliders and on and on...
Switching from G Pad to Notepro 8.4 seems useless to me.

I also forgot to mention that notwithstanding pretty much identical size and weight, the display is sensibly bigger on the Tab Pro as it's not only 0.1" physically bigger but it also doesn't have virtual buttons taking up screen real estate.
So, far from "useless"... The money I will lose selling the G Pad and buying the Tab Pro is really a very small price to pay for such a big upgrade.
P.S. I am not dissing my G Pad, still like it a lot and still think it's the overall best mid-size tablet on the market right now.

I have no intentions of switching as i really love this lg. I also suspect that these new Pro models will not be cheap. For my uses the lg is plenty fast and smooth. And since a tablet is just entertainment for me, there is only so much any tablet is worth and i bet these new Samsung tablets will exceed that price.

What Rom will it come with? I've learned to only buy with Qualcomm cpus because they get the best long-term support. There's a chance that the Qualcomm ones are only for lte support....

Great to hear you're not dissinf the G Pad!
You said switching to a notepro 8.4 would be a small price to pay, but you have no idea how much its going to cost. I bet at least 400.
BTW, knock on works just fine on CM 11. IR support is missing, haven't tried a SD card. Is it not going to work? Oh, and be sure the new bloated "pro" touchwiz will be slower than the lg rom.

I can get a brand new Note 8 for $200 CAD. Do you think it is still worth it to get? Is the $200 asking price reasonable for a two year old technology? Can $200 get a newer technology? I will mainly use it for web browsing, email, and stuff like that. I was planning to get the Tab S 8.5. Bestbuy has it on clearance for $329. What do you think?

I can tell you that I was surprised to find that there Isn't anything out there right now from Samsung worth replacing my Note 8 with. Although I've grown kinda restless with it the screen is better than some of the new offerings. The Tab A 9 inch tablet has a screen that's of way worse quality. The Note 8 is actually pretty stout. Check out some benchmarks on it, I'm sure it holds its own with some of the newer tablets. The screen is also nice, it's not killer by today's standard but still better than 70% of what's out there even now.

God no, this tablet is around 3 years old now, and is running 3 year old tech. Screen is not great (for today that is), battery life is poor (again for today), and it doesn't seem like you'll have any use for the pen, which is the only real purpose for this tablet, and what differentiates it from the rest. And with that, pen support is poor, S-Note is a worthless app, and 3rd party support for the pen is poor. Paying $200 for it is beyond insane.

My Note 8 3G on TouchWiz 4.4.4 still gives me 16+ hrs screen time (mostly book reading & writing) even after two years (obviously after de-bloating & tweaking). It's pretty solid with no issues whatsoever. This may not be the thing for those who always need the latest this or that, but I wouldn't change this tablet for anything yet -- is there any really worthy replacement?

I'm going to get right to what you want to hear. No, for $200 the Note 8 isn't worth it nowadays. You'd be better off taking that same $200 into a pawn shop and buying a decent laptop. You're just using it for browsing the web and checking email. Plus you can do so much more with a PC than you could on a tablet.

If you want web browsing, etc. Spend the $200 towards a Chromebook. Best browsing out there. Dell & HP ones are really great.

Well, you didn't answer his question. Would you, now, pay $200 for it. Forget tweaking, most people don't have the time, knowledge base, or desire for that, evaluate the stock device, as is. Is it worth $200? IMO, no way. I would rather pay $500 for a modern device that doesn't require any tweaking and debloating, to get acceptable battery life or performance, than spend days or weeks tweaking something. My time is more valuable than that. And I will argue that in real-world usage (browsing, videos, etc), your device will not come close to the 16 hours you claim. Book reading and writing is not typical usage, and any modern device will likely beat your battery life with zero time invested in modifying it. My 1+ year old iPad Mini Retina absolutely destroys my Note 8 in battery life. It's not even close. Not that it's without it's share of issues, but overall, it's a much better tablet than the Note 8. Of course, it's much newer, so that's expected.

I'm not at all an Apple fan -- no SD Card support & a Mini 4 (16GB Cellular) costs $529! Also, Apple is nothing compared to the Android customization. I wonder if we were to put all the 431 Samsung stock apks on iPad Mini, how it would be on battery.
Regarding Note 8: Compared to the initial $499 price, $200 is a good price for me personally. According to the reviews Samsung Tab 3 not that good, I'll surely buy a Note 8 for $200, if I need one again. Tweaking is very easy due to Boeffla kernel and it's own apk with pre-made profiles. The only thing taking an hour is deleting unnecessary stock apks with Titanium. Obviously my tweaking did not take days or weeks (people spend more time on unnecessary things ). Since, I'll be using tablets or smartphones till I die, knowledge base is very useful in the long run rather than be a noob always . I do some browsing on the tablet during my lectures but I prefer big screen laptop for that, and movies definitely on laptop, not on an 8".
This tablet never gave me errors (even a FC) except when I mistakenly erased certain partitions about a year ago due to my noobness.

Haha thats funny, thats the exact tablet I was looking at to replace my note. The screen on it is gorgeous I just wish the back was that faux leather like the Pro 8.4 has. Also you may want to look at the pro which has the same ppi its just Super lcd not oled like the Tab S. Anthet thing to consider is at least on Android Central theres a few people complainiing of lagginess o the Tab S. Best Buy has Tab S's open box for about $280. I had one in my hand, just couldnt justify getting over my Note and losing the S Pen. Plus although the screen is nicer its not $280 nicer so I couldnt justify it for me.

If you go for Tab S 8.4, don't upgrade to stock Lollipop 5.0.2 -- friends told me it's pretty bad -- just keep the original KitKat. Especially, the Tab S battery is 300 mAh higher than Note 8, so does screen resolution (170 dpi more) -- almost double. Hence, the Tab S will use more battery. No proximity sensor in Tab S, which is very useful in Note 8 to wake the screen without using consuming HW buttons. No S Pen, which is bad if you like to use the tab as a handwriting notepad (Note 8 is pretty good at it). Also, Tab S 8.4 isn't a cellular tab.
However, in the end it's upto the person who spends the money!

I have a note 8. I wouldn't pay 200$ for one because of the screen and lack of support from Samsung. You'll have to use a customized rom to get newer version of Android. You lose most of the pen functionality when you do that. That said, I would not opt for the tab s at $330 either. Limited support from Samsung and from what I've read, not a stellar performer based on the software.

I always prefer new so yes I would buy new. I have considered Tab A but the screen resolution is the worst in all tablet I have seen. I like the stylus in the Note 8 and A. But I can always get a separate stylus. I also consider Nexus 9 just for the frequent update.

I tried that kernel, and all it's tweaking options. I have tried debloating, overclocking, undervolting, etc. Nothing gave me any appreciable improvement in battery life or performance, and many "tweaks" gave me stability issues. In regular usage, I would be lucky to get 7 hours on the Note 8, stock or otherwise. But like I said, that would be expected for a tablet that came out over 2 years ago.
The reason why I brought up my iPad was not because I am an Apple fan, but because it's a much more modern device with easily 3 hours more battery life in real-world use. Modern Samsung tabs get similar results, but my iPad was provided to me by my job, so that's what I have. This device's only selling point is the pen. If the OP needs one, this tab is for him, regardless of the price. If not, $200 is way too much to spend on almost 3 year old hardware. And I have a feeling that he is like 99% of people out there, in that he has no interest in investing (read: wasting) the amount of time necessary to learn tweaking, flashing, debloating, etc, and there are better choices than this one out of the box.

That's strange sputnik767, because out of the box, Note 8 gave me minimum 12 hours with all the factory junk running. That time I knew nothing about tweaking or de-bloating. I heard some Note 8s had hardware issues since the factory; that may be your case.

That's the reason I went for Note 8 + multi tasking, which are tremendously useful for me. However, judging a tablet just by specs is a difficult thing. Hidden hardware issues, OS issues, and battery issues only can be known after usage (sometimes user may never know ).

Big screen... Yes
3g and calling ... Yes
Upgradeable to 5.1.1... Yes
And most important is the pen. Microsoft onenote is THEE industry leader to pen notes (sorry google keep).
Many people don't know what they want until they have it. And nothing on the market has this size screen with calling and a pen

Do you use the S-pen? I've used it for designing and drawing, including professional work, and then @$200 it's absolutely worth it. Which version is it the 4G LTE or the regular one? Could you link it here? I can say this is the best tech investment I've ever made. To me the size is perfect, and I use it as the GPS in the car, the kids watch movies on it, use it to draw manga and what have you, and it is still pocketable in a jacket, and I bring it with me everywhere. It's also the home modem hotspot for all computers. Too bad Samsung didn't sell enough of them, so there's no new version.

I was able to get one for $75 a few months ago. Bought it off someone from a Facebook group. I am always looking at these groups in my city for all sorta deals form electronics to tools. If you really want something like the Note 8.0 take a look, there has to be someone out there selling one.

I recently switched from my Note 8.0, which I owned for about 2 years, to an Asus Zenpad 8.0 S (4Gbyte Ram, 64gb flash) and it works great with the z stylus from Asus. I can highly recommend it.
All together it cost 330 Dollar and you get a modern thin, light tablet. I use the tablet mainly for taking notes (LectureNotes), surfing and email. I also owned a Note 10.1 (2014 edition) for a few months, but that one was too heavy and big (and not cheap, otherwise a great tablet though).

I have had mine for over a month now. No issues what so ever, its super fast no lag. Only con is the lack of protective cases ie. (Otter box)
I'd recommend it, a lot of performance for the price

This is a very fast tablet with a great display. I really like it. Wish there was more development, but it's rooted with xposed so I can live with that quite well.
I like seidio or otterbox cases as well, but I picked up one of these - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1QCS4N/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and have been pleasantly surprised by it. Until one of the big makers comes up with a case this will do fine.
Don't hesitate to pick one up.

Another con is that it displays applications in phone mode instead of tablet mode. Hardware wise its rock solid.

I had one from September last year to February this year. I sold it and switched to a Huawei Honor Note 8 6.6" phabletand a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7" tablet.
I found that I hardly used the Samsung tablet and that's why I bought another M3 to replace the Honor and the Samsung.
I will use the M3 again as a phone and still have a decent screen size to use as a tablet.
The only think I will probably miss is the gorgeous AMOLED screen from the Honor Note 8.

I have had mine a week and really like it. I came from a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5. I really like it. Its very fast and the screen quality and size is ideal. The only issue is that on EMUI 4.1 some off the apps (Chrome, Gmail) run in Phone mode and not tablet mode. This can be changed using ADB to reduce the DPI but this causes other minor issues. Hopefully this issue will be resolved when EMUI 5.1 is released.

I am considering this tablet or the Lenovo tab 4 8 plus. Any suggestions or pros or cons for both?

Bought one for my daughter's birthday. 11,700B (approx $330) with flip case, AKG earbuds, and screen protector.
It's quite hefty, and feels considerably thicker in the hand than my old Galaxy Tab S 8.4. Its a shame Samsung dropped the 16:9 ratio for their newer flagship tablets.
Initial impressions are good. Nice screen, runs smoothly. Hopefully Nougat isn't too far away.
