Where or whats going on with SD storage? - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering where apps and games that i move to my SD card are being stored, As you can see from this screen shots (cant post images yet being new to this forum) of my Fire HD 8. I move some app/games to my 256gb sd card but i look in SD storage it doesnt show nearly as much taken up as it should be from what is said that moved to it from apps. I should have over 10gbs of spaced used on my sd card from apps moved to it but only 860mb shows up as being used. What seems to be going on, even the apps show as On SD card. Here a a few screen shots of what i mean. I thought maybe my sd card is damaged or faulty, but i hooked up my Fire HD to my pc and moved over about 3 gigs worth of videos and photos to it and all seems to play and work on my fire hd, even shows that new spaced being taken up by the video and photos used to test it. Any info would be great, thanks for your time.

First of all your question is not clear. and i would like to tell you that to make the new one work u do not need to do any modifications in the names of folders
the old memory card has loads of files from other phones its been in so dont want to be putting them on to the new memory card so ive took all photos music videos off the old memory card ready to put back onto the new memory card. i have files on the old memory card with busybox and xrecovery do i need to copy these over to the new memory card as well ?
i also had photos and music that i couldnt find on my phone but just found them on the memory old card as well so why did these not show up on my galaxy ?

if all your doing is moving photos and music over to the new card there is no need to transfer anything else, if your phone didn't find certain music files or photos i'd say its likely due to the format they are in.
I would like to suggest you to format the memory card u bought then put the media files u want in it and then insert in the phone. It will work and things will be shown in the gallary

Suggest:
Un-mount existing card & remove.
Format new card in the phone, not in your computer.
Add new folders:
DCIM/
DCIM/Camera/
Music/
Videos/
Copy across your photos and albums and any other important stuff. Make sure you transfer any nandroid or Titanium backups you may have kept on external SD card. Set camera to save pictures to external SD card if you wish.
This is what I did on upping to a 32GB card recently. Good luck!

Can you guys share how you will be using your sd card?

I mean you read alot of people say having an sd card slot doesnt matter nowadays with android since you cant install apps to it, etc. Or can you? Can you save your photos taken with the s4 to it? What apps are available to fully utilize the sd card? If you can share how you plan on getting around any limitations.

Photos can be set to be stored on the external sdcard. I also (on my SGS2/and SGS3) have it so my nandroid backups go to the external sdcard. Downloaded files go to my external sdcard. I can also out movies/music/or whatever on my external sdcard and play them. I can also use "Root Explorer" to move anything I want from my internal sdcard and onto my external sdcard. Even with a 32Gb external sdcard and the 16Gb internal sdcard I find that I at times fill up my internal sdcard and have to move MANY files/folders from the internal to external. I haven't put ANY apps onto the external sdcard since my SGS1 and haven't had the need to ever. I have never filled the allotted app /data folder on my SGS2/SGS3 like I did on my SGS1. When I used the SGS1 and moved the apps it made them work slower and caused issues. Again never had it on my SGS2/3's. So NO need to worry about apps moving. I have over 180 apps and no issues (Including downloaded app and system apps). But having a removable sdcard for movies and music has been my best usage. As well I do A LOT of modding on my phone and it takes up a lot of room. So I transfer the files to my external for that as well.

Thats good to know, so I dont know what those people were talking about. As if the sd card was unusable.
Same here, I have over 180 apps and have no space issues when it comes to apps. I take a lot of pictures and record a lot of videos, and that takes more space than anything. I put all data, including backups, ROMs, pictures, videos, music, etc. On the external SD card. There's a ton of space left on my internal card, so for me a 16gb model with an external SD card works great.
I store 12 blue ray movies on my 64gb microsd. Should be enough to keep me busy flying overseas.
SDCARD
Can the 64GB SDCARDs be used with the s4?
First, only guys? 2nd, I'd like to have the ability to enter a 1 character password at the android lockscreen in CyanogenMod.
Lol OK.

Lost pictures.

When I ran out of space in my device I had to change my storage to storage card. Since then I've lost a bunch of pictures I can see them right after I've taken the picture but I can't find them later in the picture gallery

If you are rooted you can give this a shot.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fahrbot.apps.undelete
Gallery will have two Camera folders, one for internal & one for external, atleast thats the way it is on 4.2.2 MF9.
Have you used a file manager to see if the pictures are there & gallery just isn't updating? Could your MicroSD card to your computer to see if the files are there. Would be in DCIM\Camera in SDCard(built in storage) & extSdCard (actual MicroSD Card), long paths are /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Camera & /storage/extSdCard/DCIM/Camera respectively.
I found this folder. But the missing pics aren't there
So I switched back to camera for a function. But now I am out of space. When I move the pictures and movies to my sd card the gallery reads them as corrupted. What is wrong?

This didn't work.
Why isn't there much response to this?
It may not be the same cause, but a similar symptom happened on mine. I found out in a roundabout way that my 64GB SanDisk microSD is shot. The card is stuck in readonly mode. It reads fine but cannot write, and the ROM just didn't complain about it and shows stuff from short term cache. Amazon reviews and forum posting showed that there are other owners of the 64GB SanDisk microSD with the same issues, and it was due to the controller going bad.
Plug your microSD to a computer. If you can create a folder on it, then your microSD is still good and the problem is elsewhere. Good luck!

Application Manager - moving app to sd card glitch

I inserted a 128GB Sandisk Ultra microSD into my S7 Edge and ran the Application Manager so I could move some apps to the SD card. I tried Adobe Acrobat first, got to the first screen where it tells you about exporting the app to the SD card. The problem is there is supposed to be a Move bar at the bottom of the screen and on my cell phone all I have is a black rectangle. After hunting around on the Internet I found out what the screens are supposed to look like. The solution is to tap the black rectangle and then the process completes normally. I attached a screen shot of what the App export screens are supposed to look like. :silly:
That's how mine looked. The problem is that not all apps allow you to move it to the SD card.

I am not seeing this feature.. I have a 128 gb Evo sd card inserted. I don't see where it says you can change storage location. I've looked at a number of the apps.
Android gadgets offer is a microSD opening, more pleasant still is the way that the Android OS permits you to move numerous applications over to outside capacity to free up space on the primary gadget. For those with gadgets that offer bunches of capacity, this advantage won't not make any difference much, but rather for those with more seasoned or spending plan gadgets, it could be the main way that extra applications can be introduced.

Internal/SD storage mess

Hi everyone,
I got the latest Moto X as soon as it went public because I loved the idea of Vanilla Android with SD support. I got the 16 GB version and a 64 GB SD. Ever since I got it, the phone has been bugging me about the storage and today I finally gave in. Until today I kept my photos, music and podcasts on my SD card but the internal memory was constantly full and I couldn't install new apps. So I thought formatting the SD card under Android 6 would make it one with the internal storage. It didn't. It made it worse. I can move apps to the SD card but I can't force photos and other media to be saved there. I was hoping for internal-SD continuity and I got a total lack of control. So now I can't receive SMS and I keep having "storage is running out" notification while I still have 60 GB free on my SD card.
What's your take on this? Thanks!
Since this is about SD cards, I'm having another problem to state if OP doesn't mind. On my Moto X, when using exploring (using file explorer) the original sd card I've used for years, many folders do not show up. The same happens to a video player (RockPlayer), where it doesn't show many folders I have on my card (it did when used on my previous Atrix 2). However, when I go to "Storage & USB" and select the card, everything is normal. That means, only when viewing the sd card via "Storage & USB", all folders appear.
However, applications and games (besides gallery) will assume the first situation, where those folders remain invisible. Does anyone know what the problem actually is?
Edit: After checking, it seems that my /sdcard folder is the same as /storage/emulated/0.
Thank you.

Seems like my sdcard folder is now C601-8353 under Storage folder, along with Emulated and Self folders.

Have you tried using OpenCamera instead? It's free, open source, AND lets you choose where to store the pics. IMHO the picture quality is better too.
You could also move the pics to the card manually after you take them...

Great call, thanks for the tip.
I haven't had any problems saving photos or other media to my SD card with adoptable storage. This is something you should be able to specify in preferences whether you are using adoptable storage or not. If this doesn't work with some apps just use a file manager to move the files to the SD card.
Sometimes when I move apps to my SD Card, I would get similar messages about being out of space, even though this wasn't the case. Deleting the cache on SD card seemed to fix the problem. There can also be a problem if your SD card is too slow. However, you would probably get an alert if that was the case.
My advise erase it all internal and sd card start from a blank state the phone should give you the option to mount the sd as internal I don't like how it is implemented so I chose not to use it.
For some strange reason my phone will not read my SD card I have it formatted to internal stage and now it says searching for SD card. I'm so mad I've searched all over with no solution, I'm about to get a new phone and scrap this one, sorry I'm just very upset and I had to vent, of anyone knows of this type of issue please share.
