Hi,
I noticed that ram usage on galaxy s4 is very high even when all of the apps are closed. I have used task manager to close all of the apps and then cleared the memory but there was still about 1.05GB of ram used. I don't know if this is normal since I haven't been using android phone for 2 years. Can somebody tell me if this is normal and why? If not what can I do to fix it? Thanks!

its normal for s4... some stock apps are being cached in memory for faster operations
unused ram is wasted ram. If an app needs extra space, something will be automatically killed to make that space.

all of this is true... also keep in mind, the gpu requires slightly more ram because of the 1080p resolution.
Ok. Thank you all for the help
This is the problem of Sammy ROMs, the only way to fix it is to... wait for a Custom ROM and Flash it
this is normal on SGS4 .
Reasons of that are mainly GPU and HQ resolution , cached services and process, and even more if you are using the included extra features (S-voice, NFC ...)
But the SGS4 come with 2 gb of RAM ! you still get like 800 free mb of memory that is good enough for all you needs ))
Personally when I close all apps i get 0.91 gb used memry and 0.9bg free memory
Is freeing up RAM necessarily bad for Android? I hear people say that Android tries its best to use up as much RAM as possible to keep it running reasonably well and that unused memory is wasted memory. I just recently disabled most if not all what is considered bloat on my g2 using the stock application manager and my usual free RAM went from 650-700mb to about 930-950mb.
Just wanted to know how it would affect the phone itself because I've also read that disabling some bloat can have the device run cycles trying to start up disabled applications in the background?

you already have a decent amount of free ram but with android its bteer for the operating system to use more as this would mean a faster and smoother experience if if were to use little your phone would not be much better than a really cheap android device with only 512mb of ram
Guys my previous phone was s3 mini which had cm 11 installed. It used 400mb of ram and nexus 4 with same ROM 900. Can you explain that :0

If the system has more RAM will use more of it because it will make things faster.

N4 uses on avg about 400mb
You have a lot of cached apps? Facebook alone can eat up to 100mb
And why do you even worry? N4 has 2gigs of RAM....
When you start out with around 1.8gb of RAM.
Have to deal with the fact that once you get below 500mb of free ram the device turns into a lag fest. Add in the 400mb or so that just running the system uses.
What's funny is the pr crap from Google. Oh we made kitkat to run on lower end devices. We used a crippled nexus 4 with 512 mb or ram. Well they failed. The OS still runs like a three legged dog when it's "low" on ram.
Interesting..
Any way to fix this?
I used greenify on s3 mini.
But I guess I won't be needing that since 2gb of RAM plus snapdragon s4 pro is just too high for phone to lag.
Nexus 4 is still high end phone, right?

Oh come on guys....it is 2GB of RAM and it is STOCK ANDROID! This is not Touchwiz for you to be scared of running out of memory.
I'm a power user and i have never had more than 1GB of RAM used..... just install greenify and enjoy life
Also, what lag? Only lag you will see is if you feck up your kernel settings, if you turn of 3 cores completely or underclock to 700mhz lol

I'm using CyanogenMod not stock and I don't mind about RAM but it's simply plain weird that s3 mini uses less RAM on same ROM and android version.

What would you do with free RAM instead of using it to cache and run services and system processes? Free RAM is wasted RAM

Read here for more information on Linux system memory usage. It's a bit long, so make a coffee, read slowly and you'll understand why.

Not really. Compared to this year's flagship devices, our nexus 4 cannot be considered as a high end device. Having said that, it still performs really well because of the stock android. Only drawbacks are its camera and battery though.

5 hours of SOT is good for a 2100mah battery....and regarding the phone status, it's still a High end device.
Just because it doesn't work at 2300mhz or that it doesn't have a 1080p display it doesn't mean it's not a high end device.
It performs as a high end device, which is what is important. What is the point of 2.3 Ghz when my N4 can run lag free underclocked at 1.1 Ghz?
It's all marketing

You won't run out of RAM because android went let it happen.
The system / apps uses more than 1gb all the time. There should not be a need for root and greenify etc
You can see lag everywhere. It's there no matter what the die hard android fans say. The launcher lags in the widget selection part. Google plus lags and so on
Its funny how people see what the want to see. Most of the same people are also the ones that move on to the nexus 5 and say wow this is fast, I though the 4 was fast etc. They then immediately see the difference. Something you never hear from anybody going from a iPhone 5 to 5s.
To other posters yes in theory free ram is wasted ram. But it's not wasted ram when you need to keep around 500mb free to keep your system running as it should.
Again. On ios you can run right to you run out of RAM and make the app crash. You won't notice it until happens. On Android... Oh crap. There goes the lag fast. Clear all greenify and so on. All while having more than 400mb of free available ram. Which is more than you would have on a system with only 512 mb.

Lol what are you talking about
I have no lag....not in G+, nor in Widget drawer.
iOS and Bada OS are similar. Bada 2.0 on my old Wave 3 was iPhone fast, and it only had 512 megs of RAM.
iOSBada & Android work differently.... what i've noticed that these closed source sh1ts have runtime similar to ART, hence they open up apps fast (even the Wave with 1.4 ghz single core & 512mb ram)

Whether it's better or not, I don't know because I don't use CM. Either way, it is good imo. You can try but not all phones are made the same. So, if it is good on mine doesn't mean it's good on yours too. You just need to try it yourself.
Note: If you are using CM, use the CM version.

That is why my friend, read what I said carefully. I did say it performs really well despite not having all those specs you said. 5 hours? Yeah, on wifi I can get up to 7 hours but on 3g connection, not even close to that. Best I can get so far with 3g all the time is 3 hours. That's my opinion anyway, why should we settle on good when it can be great. I hope the next nexus (if google still make it) would have a bigger battery. That's all.
Hello Xda members!
This is just a random thread that I thought it would be fun to do and compare ram usage for a note 5 from many devices since I saw many people complaining about the ram being high all the time.
So post down below your ram usage! But please do not clear the ram, just enter smart manger and take a screenshot. Would be better if you closed all apps.
Let's see Em!

Wow! It isn't as bad as I thought.
Without closing anything I normally have 1.6 or 1.7 free at the end of the day. Mine is rigorously debloated though.

Currently i am using ressurection remix which is pretty good but after closing a app the ram remain still occupied and doesn't become like it was before opening that app. please tell me which rom has best ram optimisaton
and for what you need free ram? If system or app needs more ram it will free it by himself, if you want install greenify and greenify apps, but for sure you don't need a lot of free ram.

sometimes, even you close an app, part of it stay in memory for future use of this app, sometimes *system* ram usage increases throught your using of phone, sometimes other apps increease usage too
Thanks. And please tell me how to judge a ROM weather it has a good ram management or not

I havent seen a rom with a really bad ram management here for our Bacon all the ROMs are based on one of the 2 'sources' we have. I wouldn't worry too much about it just enjoy the great roms
Verstuurd vanaf mijn A0001 met Tapatalk
If there's memory leak in the source, it will be there in all the derived ROMs. But you need not worry about it. Sources are quite stable and memory management must be equally good.
However, it can be a bit different on suppose an AOSP based ROM vs a LineageOS based ROM. This is also very kernel dependent. You should try them out yourself and see! Good luck.
