Anyone figured out how to get rid of dupe contacts on the phone app? On the contacts app, they show up fine. But, on the phone app, I sometimes show three listings for the same person - due to whatsapp and duo being added for the same contact.
Thanks.
same problem here...with Xiaomi mi a2
Open your contact app > tap on the 3 dots setting at the top right corner > customize view > select customize > uncheck every boxes but my contact.
Let me know if it works?

Thanks,
But this didn't solve that.
On Contacts app i see every contact once, but on the Phone app i see 2 entries for every contact, i mean everything is duplicated. when i'm opening each contact i see that one entry is for his phone, and the other is for his Whatapp's account.
I removed Whatsapp app and now nothing is duplicated on the Phone app, but when i'm reinstalling the whatsapp - again everything is duplication in the Phone app (the contact app is always fine, no duplicates).
I saw this bug online, but nothing that people offered helped me.
This is a new phone, it's the Xiaomi mi A2 with Oreo 8.1.0.
Please advise

Thanks, But that didn't help,
When i'm doing :
Code:
1- Goto settings>Apps & notifications>App info,then search for whatsapp>Permissions,then turn off contacts permission.
and opening whatsapp, all the chats are without the contact name, just bare numbers..
Ok...I found a fix for this. It has to do with the different way Google and WhatsApp handles international numbers. I had to change the way my numbers were in my google contacts from 123-456-7890 to +1123-456-7890. Strangely, it was already displaying that way when I viewed my google contacts on my desktop; however, when I edited them on my phone contacts app, I didn't have the +1. So for anyone else having this issue, make sure to add the '+' and your country's international code to the beginning. If you have a lot of contacts to change, you might want to export your numbers as csv, use a spreadsheet program to concatenate the '+ country code', then import them back.

I sent this bug to Xiaomi, and they weirdly replied :
Hi Ido,
Greetings from Xiaomi!
Thank you for writing to us.
Sorry for the delay in response.
I understand that you are facing the issue with your Mi A2 due to duplicate contacts. I regret the inconvenience.
With respect to your concern, would like to inform you that this an inbuilt feature of Mi A2/A1 phone that Whatsapp and Google account contacts could not be merged and they remain separately shown in the contact list of the device.
I regret that there is no way to merge the duplicate contacts of both the accounts. We regret the discomfort this may have caused you.
However, I will definitely transfer your feedback to our concerned authorities so that they can work upon the same. We assure you that we would do our best in order to avoid any further inconvenience to our customers. We value your opinion and see it as an opportunity to learn and improve.
Hope your bond with Xiaomi stays forever and we walk a long distance together.

Had the same problem
I found a solution for my Xiaomi A2. The new google contacts website on my pc shows a flag in front of the phone number of the contact while i had still the country pre selection code within the phone number. I removed the +YourCountryPreSelection, while leaving the correct flag, then the double contacts in the phone app disappears after a sync.
On some contacts without a country pre select number in front of the phone number i had simply to edit the number.
After some more playing around it most likely is enough just to edit the phone number via browser.
Quick solution. - Download Merge+ from Google Play Store - it worked for me

Hi - does anyone know how to edit or remove favourites on the contacts screen? None of the menu options has it (or it's not obvious). I've set up some contacts with the "wrong" default contact method and I want to change it.
Thanks.
PS unlocked Desire from Clove - arrived Wednesday 14th April.

Thanks Soledue. Typical - I sort of discovered the method not long after I posted and it's how you describe. The people widget can show any group - Favorites is just one of them! Cheers.
Am I being really dumb, because I'm having a problem with this too and your solution doesn't seem to solve it!?
All I want to do is remove some people from the "Favorites" group.
I have selected that contact, chosen "Edit", opened the groups list and unchecked the box. The list on the contact's screen still shows "Favorites" and they still appear on the widget. Go back in to edit the contact and the box is still unchecked.
If I open People and then open the groups screen, select the group and long press the contact I have the following menu items: "Call Mobile", "Edit Contact", "Delete Contact", and "Send contact as vCard". Delete contact does exactly that, delete's them completely from the phone.
So how can I get these people out of the Favorites group???
It's prob cause it's still on the Google sync'd contact...had some issues with it myself

My feeling was the same, especially since I have been able to get the contacts removed from the group and widget only to have them reappear minutes later. I assumed this was the result of the phone sync'ing. But I can't quite figure it out... if I view the contact in gmail they aren't a member of the "Starred" group and there is no "Favorite" group, so I think that group must be local to the device.
I am getting the same also, if you view the details they are not in any group, yet show on the widget and in the favourites group itself. Even went to google and removed the notes that, I think, related to the group entry???
Same problem here!
I've added a contact to the Favorites Tab and now I can't delete it from the Group. I've tried all the methods from above posts but none works.
Does anyone know how to fix this, because it's quite frustrating!
The only prob I have , i that every group has " voice mail " in it .. at the top!!...
cant get rid of it .. and it's not part of grp settings
any ideas?
i would like to know that how can i remove the Voicemail number from the contact list widget? tried doing it many times but it keeps on showing no matter what. i dont have a voicemail number and if i had it, it will never be my fave number ever. please help

I have spent all day trying to remove one contact that was stuck in the favourites and your idea worked instantly.
I could remove and add other users just not this particular people.
Thank you
I have had a similar issue to all mentioned in this thread, and there is a way to resolve it.
I beleive the problem is caused by multiple entries per contact. These entries are from your contact, sim contact, google contacts etc.
This is how I fixed the issue;
>Click on the people app
>Select the contact you want to fix (unfortunately it has to be done individually)
>on the top right of the screen there will be something call "Linked", tap on this
>this now shows you what this contact is linked to. If it shows multiple phone, facebook, google etc unlink them all
>make sure you only 1 phone contact, in this set the Group to favourite (or whatever you want), now either link the google/hotmail etc ones to it, or copy the details to the contact and delete all duplicate details
I have condensed mine to phone contact and facebook (plus a few with google).
The desire links all different contact details from various form together. when it does this it picks its own default one, hence you have favourites that aren't, or vice versa.
It took me about 2 to 3 hours to go through my entire contacts list sort it out, pain-staking, but well worth it

THANK YOU!
I'd been at the groups menu and looked at my favorite contacts, but it never occurred to me to remove them from the group directly! Spent several hours editing this one contact I was dying to remove from favorites, only to find it stuck as a favorite. Went through my Google Contacts settings over and over, synchronizing manually every minute after un-starring it, but this was what I was looking for!
I registered only to thank you ^^

A number of people, myself included, have mentioned that since installing any JI6 based Captivate Froyo rom, the Contacts 'Group' feature is broken.
Selecting a contact from a group (e.g. 'Family') sometimes opens the correct contact, other times an incorrect contact opens, and sometimes a screen pops up asking us to pick an application from the provided list to be used to open the contact.
When I was trying out some of the I9000 based Froyo roms, I noticed that none of them had this problem. So last night I decided to replace the '/system/app/Contacts.apk' in my JI6 (Cognition 2.2vBETA8.1) with the apk from an I9000 Froyo rom.
With a couple of issues (see RED below), the Contacts 'Group' feature now performs without problem, always correctly opening the correct contact.
I've attached the replacement 'Contacts.apk' file, just BACKUP the original file in your '/system/app/' folder, then swap it with this one, then reboot.
You may find that you need to first 'chmod 666 /system/app/Contact.apk' before you can replace it. Just chmod it back to '644' after replacing.
NOTES:
IF THE AT&T CONTACTS SYNC FEATURE IS IMPORTANT TO YOU, DO NOT USE THIS FIX. THIS IS AN I9000 FILE, IT DOES NOT HAVE THE AT&T SYNC.
If you have any direct dial shortcut on your home screen, you will need to delete and rebuild them after applying this fix.
I found that simply by selecting what groups I want displayed in the contact list fixed all the problems I had.
Contacts > Menu > More > Display Options > Under choose contacts to display, select the dropdown you want to see. I only use Google contacts, so I selected All other contacts and Starred in Android contacts under Google.
Like I said, this fixed everything with wrong contacts being displayed when I tried to call or text the person.

I ONLY use phone contacts, no Google contacts, and no SIM contacts. And this Group bug has vexed me since day one of the leaked Captivate Froyo release, and continued on every Captivate Froyo based rom (e.g. Cognition).

Thanks for catching that DG, I added it to my disclaimer.
This works great; I am running Cognition 2.2 Beta9 and the only real issue I had was this. I have a large number of contacts and depend on groups. Thanks
For anyone having issues you really do need to edit the permissions; otherwise you will run into problems but it may look like the change was made. I used Root Explorer and copied the original Contacts.apk to a backup directory. Then I went back to the system-apps directory and changed the permissions to rwxrwxrwx and copied the new file over the original. Then changed permissions back to rw-r--r--, which is the default setting and restarted the phone. It works perfectly and I can even use all the homescreen shortcuts (Direct Dial); I did have to delete and recreate them though.

If you are just calling the contact you may just want to use direct dial, or direct messaging if only texting. I don't know of any way to change the contact options for a contact shortcut.
Hello everyone I have tried searching for this but cant not find it. the one link that I did find returned a dead page.
What I am asking today is in reguards to CyanogenMod 7 and messaging. I text a lot and find it annoying that the "Me" in messages does not have my picture in it. Before I went from stock everything to CM7 I had the ability to edit me contact card and this allowed my pic to display for my messages sent. But now I can not find out how to do. I was told to do Settings > Call Settings > Additional Settings > My Phone Number but I do not see additional settings.
While it is not a big thing it does annoy me as my OCD kicks in and I see received pics of the contact but an android bot as my pic. Can anyone help me out with this.

I'm not sure if this is the right way or what, but it's pretty easy. Just create a new contact using your own phone number. Name the contact 'Me'. Then select a picture of yourself to set as the photo for the 'Me' contact. Save your changes. Your picture should now appear in the text mesaging threads as the Me contact.

Anyhow, you should be able to add a contact pic to your gmail and it will show up.
My phone also has the same picture in my contacts where I have put all my information for myself. I didn't associate it with this contact, so it must be done through Gmail.

When you download the Facebook for Android app, it asks you to sync contacts. DON'T DO IT. Whenever someone has a phone number in their Facebook profile, regardless of if there is an existing contact that it will link to or not, the number will have a +1 in front of it. For instance, a number that should read 123-456-7890 would read +1123-456-7890. Facebook adds this for unknown reasons. When you send a text to the borked number, the text goes through, even on verizon.com, it says that the text was sent by you and that the other person received it on their profile. However, the person does not receive it on their phone. Also, if you call someone with a borked number, the phone will not ring.
In conclusion: Don't sync Facebook contacts, and your SMS should send fine and calling should work fine. Alternatively, you can use any messaging app but stock, such as Go SMS Pro and the message will go through fine, even with the +1 format.
Hope this helped someone.

Nice Find man i havent noticed this but ill be weary of this from now on
How does this explain people receiving some messages and not others? If it was the number they wouldn't receive any texts at all, not just 30% of them. I noticed this a while ago and I couldn't call people with the +1, but they received texts just fine.
Sent from my Optimized Shift using XDA App
Only people who have their numbers listed in their Facebook profile are affected.
This is what worked for me. If it doesn't work for you, then I'm sorry.
I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying maybe there's two seperate issues. Without my Facebook contacts synced some messages are going through and some aren't. Maybe its just me, but I've seen posts with people saying the same. Thank you for your solution nonetheless.

You're welcome. I'm not saying by any means that this will solve everyone's issues. Just my experienced and it worked for me. Best of luck to you on sorting whatever is up with your SMS out. What ROM are you using?
+1 is the country code for the USA, no idea why it's adding it though. I know that wavesecure requires you add +1 to the contacts on your contact list since the texts come from somewhere in asia IIRC (may not be true now since McAfee owns them).
I know it is, but since it's a cell phone, you don't use the 1 or +1, which messes it up.
Thank you for putting this up. I was confused and frustrated as to why lots of my contacts didn't receive or was able to send any texts or calls to me. But now its all good
I'm going to test this theory. Hope this works. Thanks

I think this only matters on sense roms. I know I need to be on aosp for dialing businesses through voice search to work because it also adds a +1 (at least it used to).

Hi, I have Moto X Style and since I've got the update for Marshmallow yesterday the Caller ID is not working and it's not showing me the contact that is calling me. After the call I can see them on the "Recents" page but when they call its not showing me their name and photo only the number.
After awhile I've noticed that the problems is only with numbers that are saved in my contacts with the country prefix code (+972-...) and when they call me the phone shows me the number without the prefix(without the +972), so I tryed to change one of the numbers to to be without my country prefix and it recognized the number but I cant change all of my contacts so the phone will recognize them.
Does anyone else is having the same problem or knows how to fix it?
Thanks.

I saw this post before I posted my post and at first when I upgraded to Marshmallow the phone didnt recognize the contacts at all but after I signed out and reconnected to my google account as recommended there, it fixed only half of the problem. Now it's recognizing numbers that are saved in the "local form" with my country code BUT it's still just not recognizing contacts that are saved with my country code prefix in their number.

Yeah, looks like I may have the same issue.... Hoping I don't have to do a factory reset to fix this.
I have the same problem, the caller ID just doesn't seem to work, but in the SMS it kinda does

Hi,
I found several solutions for the contacts recognition problem, check out the url below (I opened the thread).
What eventually solve the problem for me was using the Twitch app mentioned in the thread.
Let me know if it helped.

FOUND A SOLUTION THAT WORKS and IS SIMPLE !!!! The credit goes to Sasha Medv :
"What solved the problem: I removed all google accounts (in Google settings), and then added them back. After 15 minutes during which I was sure my contacts were lost forever, everything returned to normal, and I even can see the contacts in past calls in the call log. Yay"
no need to wipe partitions, import export your entire google contacts to vcf and other weird stuff - simply do what this guy say ! BAAM !
