RDP & Firewall - Windows 10, 8, 7, XP etc.

Changed registry RDP-Tcp listening PortNumber
Enabled Windows Inbound Rule 'Remote Desktop - User Mode (TCP-In)'
Restarted 'Remote Desktop Services' (Instead of rebooting)
Router configured for new port
Does not work
Default registry RDP-Tcp listening PortNumber
Created new firewall rule with custom port number
Restarted 'Remote Desktop Services' (Instead of rebooting)
Router configured for custom port
Works
So the difference is the default registry RDP-Tcp listening PortNumber. There's now two rules within Windows firewall allowing 2 ports yet only 1 works because of router setup. The inbound rule 'Remote Desktop - User Mode (TCP-In)' is enabled when you allow remote connections and does not seem like it can be modified through the registry without breaking RDP functionality.
Although I restarted 'Remote Desktop Services' instead of rebooting, is there a way to make Windows listen only on 1 port or is this the only way without breaking it?

Wifi access to internet via ISA firewall

I've just set up a small wireless network at home through which I intend to use several devices to connect to the internet through my LAN!
The LAN gateway is running ISA 2004 and my home computer is running the necessary Firewall client (a completely secure connection with username and password)!
Now everything's working fine... the pocket pc hooks up just right and i can browse the network and do what I could probably do using my own personal computer BUT the internet doesn't work!
It keeps asking me for a username and password (which like i usually provide in internet explorer on my personal computer) which i do supply... three times in a row after which it gives me an error saying that ISA cannot authenticate me!
The home computer doesn;t run the internet without the firewall client, and i'm supposing the pocket pc is facing the same dilemma! is there any way to circumvent this issue? perhaps a mobile version of the isa firewall client?
Please help. Thanks!
afaik there isn't a mobile version of the firewall client.
I set my ISA server to allow anonymous internet access ,and set all my machines up as secure nat clients (set isa servers ip as default gateway, I use a dhcp scope to do this). There is lots of info on this on microsofts ISA server website, I'd suggest a look there first, or try a google for secure nat.
Good luck, works well for me but ymmv.

I'm dying here: Activecrap Problems

I had summiter's rom on and for some odd reason my sync died on two toshiba laptops. One is as a guest the other for outlook and all. So I did a new ROM install of the new cingular ROM and still nothing. It goes throught the motions when installing 4.1 (even tried 4.2). It bypasses the setup screen says connected under guest and then a box comes up and say it cannot be completed, reconnect your device. I have read Chris De Herrera recommendations and have installed all ports and activesync managers AND TURNED ON ALL SERVICES.Connected to a usb port. I have been using PPC's for years and never had a problem like this.
PLEASE HELP ME I'M PATHETIC!
Have you tried disabling your firewalls and antiviral? - thats what worked for me = it was one of the firewalls.
I have a similar problem that I've narrowed down to Activesync not playing well with an integrity client.
I have the Cisco VPN client which works with an integrity client to check that my laptop is up-to-date with antivirus definitions etc. Uninstalling the integrity client allows Activesync to synchronise, but reinstall it and Activesync just stays in the 'connecting' phase.
Since I have to work quite a lot from out of the office, I need the VPN client working, so I just synchronise the Wizard via IR, which is a bit of a pain, but it gets the job done in the end. I hope in the future there's a fix for this.
I've had probs with Activesync. Try this, go into the connections tab in Windows and look for a new "local Area Connection" if you hover over them they will say which network card they belong to. The one you want is Windows Mobile Device.
Go into it, then properties. Once in properlies, make sure there is a tick in the TCP/IP box.
Then go into properties again and make sure Obtain IP Address and Obtain DNS Server automatically are both checked. The click OK, and OK again to come out of it.
With your device unplugged, go to the task manager and clear all running progs. Then in activesync on your laptop clear all the activesync devices with FILE > Delete partnership.
Then try connecting.
Hope This Helps
I've had the same problems with a O2 XDA Mini S and active sync 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2! I think I have found what was causing mine to fail - I had already disabled firewalls, AV etc with no sucess.
Check the network settings to ensure that the Windows Mobile Device adapter is set to obtain an address automatically.
THEN - you need to ensure that the DHCP service is running on your PC - My machine has a static IP on its LAN interface so the service was not running. Go to Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services.
Look for the DHCP service - if it is set to Manual then right click > Properties and set Startup Type to Automatic.
Then right click on the service again and click on start - if your device is plugged in then you should hear it connect....
Hope this helps,
Andy.

Enable DHCP in windows mobile without starting ICS

Hi,
I want to create an Adhoc NW connection between my Windows Mobile
device with the PC (Win-XP) without starting Internet Connection Sharing
(ICS). I was able to make connecting between the Phone and PC, but the DHCP
server does'nt seems to start in Windows Mobile. How can I enable DHCP server in the device.
I found some registry settings(DHCP Allocator...) but those are in connection with ICS.
-Nik
AFAIK you need to bind DHCP server service to another service, such as ICS or PPP to have this functionality. Maybe there's a way to bind it to an interface, but I haven't found it.
If you are simply looking to avoid NAT, there should be a way to disable it in ICS. See for example http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=276937 for a decent discussion.
Failed to start DHCP allocator
I tried to change the connectionSharing registry but it does not seems to work... specially the privateInterface. All other registry also i have set accordingly but DHCP allocator does not start automatically.
You can give both phone and PC a static IP? Its a little bit of work but it does work like that...
Thats what I dont want to do, I want to use DHCP ...but it seems the DHCP allocator is very tightly coupled with ConnectionSharing component

help needed to set up Remote Desktop

can anybody tell me how to setup remote desktop from HTC to my PC (I am using Windows 7)
Step by step please guys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCs4GQma7IQ
With that guide I made it work, good luck.
I did exactly everything in this guide and even set a corresponding exception in the Windows firewall (also tried with Windows firewall off) - but the mobile remote desktop program always tells me there was an internal error... But what the heck could that be?
Dont bother the remote dt program is ****e, im currently using vnc which is a bit better, but rather lacking also.
Is it me or did that video not mention setting up your windows machine to allow connections.
Make sure remote desktop is enabled on your PC and make sure it is allowing connections from computers running any version of Remote desktop(2nd option) third option works between windows 7 machines but wouldn't allow my phone to connect.
Your error sounds like it is being caused by something on the phone end though so i dont know if that will help.
Those with remote desktop working can you get it to go landscape? Mine works fine except i can't get landscape mode. Also anyone know of a app that can send wake up requests to a machine? I have this on my laptop so i can wake my pc over the internet and then log in. Anything similar out there for win mobile?
allowing a connection through windows firewall alone is not helping, if you have other system securtiy programs that also has a firewall. or maybe your router has a firewall too. you should try and forward the right port (3389) in the software of your router.
I opened port 3389 on the router, I activated the correct remote desktop option on the PC (Vista), the IP is right (wrong IP adress throws a different error, so the program gets that far)...
I guess you have Windows 7 Home version
Have you tried using 16 bit high colour option? Mine said it couldn't connect when i turned it down to 256 colours.
Edit: Windows 7 x64 btw
OK on my windows7 x64 ive turned on remote desktop and set it to allow connections (2nd option) and i still cant connect, what do i type in user/pass on the hd2
-ive setup the portforwarding on my bethere box
-tryed both color modes on hd2
does it have to be over wifi or can it be over 3g?
Your user name and password for windows.
You MUST have a password set up on your windows account to be able to use remote desktop. If you don't have a password set up remote desktop and other network related access will not work. I.e using the phone to access shared windows folders.

ok ive added a password to my pc but still wont work, i think i tmay be something todo with this steps
2. Open a web browser, and type 192.168.1.1 to access your router. If you don't know the default username and password (usually admin/password), Google for it.
3. Enter port forwarding. Add a new entry using your local IP address, and the start/end port of 3389.

Click to collapse
my router is a THOMSON TG585v7 and to log into it i need to type http://192.168.1.254 so i did and the only thing like port forwarding i can find is the Toolbox\Game & Application Sharing menu and in their i can type the ports but cant type the local IP address as their no where to add it, ive added a pic that might help you help me
If you are accessing the machine via your wifi(i.e your own network) you should be able to do it without any port forwarding.
So punch in your machines local IP and your username and password. That should work(make sure it is using your WiFi and not still connecting via 3G). If you wanted to be able to do it via 3G/wifi(external network) then you will need to get port forwarding working.
Edit: Port forwarding guide for you. I think this is roughly the same version of router you have just different branding.

so in the last part of the setup i need to manually define it as the local ip, still not working if that's what i should do
The last step is applying the forwarding to your PC. So you should be able to pick your PCs name in the drop down box.
Have you tried just doing it over your local wireless network(forget about port forwarding for a minute.) Enter the local IP(could also just try entering the name of the PC though im not sure if that works) of your PC as the computer then your user name and password.

problems with remote desktop

I am trying to set up remote desktop with wifi.
when changing the settings on my laptop, I seem to be missing something.
When I go to settings and the window where you can check the choice for
" allow remote assistance connections to this computer"
everyone shows that there are 3 choices listed below
-dont allow connections to this computer
-allow connections from computer running any version of remote desktop
-allow connections from computers running remote desktop with network level authentication.
My computer doesnt show any of those 3 options.
I am running vista if it matters.
thanks for any advice or comments.
are you running Vista basic or maybe vista home? it might not be available on those versions.
or maybe you aren't logged in to an administrator account?
