Yeah i was just about to loose hope

Like you guys...I sent an unlocked S9 back because I was unhappy that Samsung had waited to push out the update for the S7 Edge. Won't be buying any more Samsung products as a result.

For anyone who has it running, how is the performance compared to Nougat?

It's just beautiful. Smooth and stable. Better than AT&T's. My advice is when you update to Oreo via OTA, go to recovery and wipe cache and also do a factory data reset. Make sure you backup your information. Since by doing this the performance and battery life will be way better. You'll notice it.
Compared to Nougat, performance wise it's the same, slightly better. Plus the new features.

I've been using it for a while and i can tell you it feels smoother and the battery life is longer, not by much but its noticable.

Yeah, I dumped the AT&T firmware the day I found out about the unlocked firmware, as it is complete mess. I was more referring to some of the independent reviews of Oreo compared to Nougat. Glad to know it's not a bad update, as it just showed up on my phone today.

Okay, I got the update last night. My initial impressions were not great. Out of the chute, it felt like a hot, laggy mess. (literally - my device started getting warm). HOWEVER, after a factory reset, it is definitely performing better than Nougat. As others have noted, not by much, but it is noticeable. Initial load times seem a little longer, but once the app is loaded, everything feels a bit smoother. Definitely a nice update, but I would consider a factory reset almost mandatory on this one.

Now That You Have ICS Is Your Note Noticeably Faster?

I'm not intersted in Quadrant or Antutu scores. I'm just curious if after upgrading to stock Samsung ICS you actually notice speed improvements on your note.
Meaning, does switching between screens seem faster? Does moving around the phone feel slower? Things of that nature. Now that the hardware GPU is actually being used can you see/feel the difference?
Thanks
I can't recall whether the app drawer and screens scroll better but one thing is for certain, web browsing and scrolling through the market is hugely improved.
Messaging is also less laggy and more responsive, the S Memo has been improved a great deal.
It's a good update but I wouldn't be shocked to see another incremental update to polish it off.
For me it seems more laggy and drains battery faster. Few apps crashed as well. I'm sure sammy will release few more updates but I'm not too thrilled for this release. I have heard people bricking their phone & missing key feature apps for premium suite (MyStory and s-note) with this update too, feels like Samsung did half ass job on it.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
The areas that it is definitely faster for me are:
1. Coming out of the lock screen
2. Pulling down and pushing back up the notification bar.
3. In ADW EX, pinching to zoom in and out of the homescreens and homescreen previews is smooth now, It used to be pretty stuttered in LC2.
4. Music apps that require touch input to trigger sounds eg. Solo, TheDrum, Grand Piano. There is noticeably less latency between touching the screen and hearing the sounds.
ICS after 24 hours
I can confirm the following after testing this release under myriad conditions
ICS Stunner is a 100 times better!!
seriously, all this hype and it still looks the same

Hi There,
First off all, the N-7000 didn't move officially to Ics yet, since we're all still waiting for the first Samsung stock leak.
Now what you see, are some AOSP, AOKP and CM roms based on Ics 4.0.4. They are more than ready for daily use, stable, but surely missing some Nice features like SPen....
On this forum, there is one leak from Samsung, witch is making Success, a chineese Ics leak, that is originally for the GT-9220, A Galaxy note released in the china, but not with the same processor, thus making the leak not compatible with the N-7000.
Super Devs like Chainfire, maxicett, Alba and others, took this and made it usefull for us!
Some says that it's risky, but believe me, I'm on the maxicet's one " TheMidTeam", and for me is the Best so far!
All the Samsung features are present, The rom is smooth, super fast, stable, and the Best is yet to come, once we'll have our own N-7000 Ics Samsung leak : let's say this Q of the year.
Once said, my freind : make your backup and choose one of the aboves Ics.
Just follow every step the Dev says, and you are set!
Good luck.

Really!?
One week out of the forum, and I become so outdated!
Well I Will check it out,
Any way, as I said, Things Will get much better.
Thank you so much my freind.
All the ICS ROMs I've tried were snappier than GB in general.
Installed it yesterday. Cannot really say it is noticably faster at this point. I have noticed the browser is faster and has many more settings. I have not had any issues and think it is a nice upgrade. It is certainly not slower.
For me its made a massive difference, everything loads instantly now, totally impressed how much so, never thought it would make that much difference.
My note started slower than with GB. Some FC, unable to use the camera, for example, as it frozes. But after some use, things are getting better.
I feel like apps data needs to be updated somehow, so with the use of every application it's getting better.
Anyway, I'm a bit "disappointed". I felt a higher improvement when installed ICS on my Desire HD, so I thing I expected in some way that Note will have a great improvement too. And yes it's better (now, with the use), but not so much as expected.
Maybe is just because with GB my note was already nearly perfect
How'd you get it, being in Plano, TX?

Initial releases are usually buggy and it seems that it's the case here.
What I can put it down to is whether or not ICS was installed after a full wipe as it appears that those who did it this way don't have the problems you mention above.
I also got it from kies as I was on stock LC1 (DBT) and have these annoying problems so if it continues I will either wait for an update from sammy (anyones guess when this might happen) or wipe then flash the new ICS.
when i first installed it was fast, now that i did a hard reset its insanely fast!!! i am very pleased with the update

Yeah it's probably best to start with a clean slate. When you've got all kinds of data from GB floating around while using ics stuff can get borked and whatnot.
Swyped from my Galaxy Note using Tapatalk
ICS in general is ok but I'm having issues with bluetooth. It regularly loses connection with my Nissan Connect car system. Also before on GB when streaming music over bluetooth the car unit would show the name of the track playing, on ICS it doesn't.
The exact same thing happened when I updated my Galaxy S2 to ICS. I want to try another brand phone, maybe HTC, thats running ICS to see if it is a problem with ICS or my Nissan Connect system.
As I wasn't having any serious issues on GB I reverting back until the bluetooth problem is sorted.

[Q] 4.4.4 vs 5.1.1 Stock

Guys,
I picked up a second hand Nexus 7 yesterday for a really low price. I had no intention of a purchase but sometimes the price is so low you can't say no.
The N7 is currently on 5.1.1 and has very inconsistent performance. 1 action will be slow, then the next few quick. (1 day of usage after factory reset.)
I'm looking to give this tablet to my 9 year old nice and was wondering if stock 4.4.4 has better performance? As its for a 9 year old, I'm looking to keep everything totally stock.
Thanks in Advance. :highfive:
Honestly, my N7 ran fastest with the OS that originally came on the device, 4.1JB. Assuming you don't want to go back that far, 4.4.4 would be the next best choice.
There are a couple of good 5.1.1 custom Roms that are fairly smooth, but since you only want stock, stick with 4.4.4

If I was going back further than 4.4.4, I'd probably go back to 4.2.2 as it really impressed me on the nexus 4.
Take your point about 4.4.4 being the best recent os though. How would you rate 5.1.1 if we would say that 4.4.4 is 100% speed?
Install cyanogenmod 11 (4.4). Best rom for nexus 7.

Trimmer?
So far I have no idea why or how it works, but I followed some advice I read in this forum and installed a "trimmer" application. I manually started a "trim" operation, and after that the device became noticeably more responsive. Even in case that this is just a placebo effect, I am much more satisfied with the tablet than I have been before. You might just try it, the app comes with no cost, and if the device is usable afterwards, you can pass it to your nice niece. Otherwise you can try to install a different, or even older, operating system.
adeelraj has a point. It seems your main qualm about using a custom Rom is the complexity of its added features. BSZAospLP is pretty much stock AOSP, so it should behave pretty much like the stock ROM.
And Ahkah also has a point. My brother's N7 was exhibiting similar symptoms to yours. I formatted his /data and /cache partitions, and then ran that Trimmer app (root) and that fixed his random slowdowns problem.

Thanks Ahkah,
I haven't used the Nexus 7 much since I bought it. Theoretically, the fs trim issue shouldn't impact performance yet. I've just found the performance being really inconsistent on 5.1.1. i.e. one command fast and smooth and the next has lag.
Someone is borrowing the tablet at the moment and I will probably try 4.4.4 when I get it back.

Well, I heard enough bad things about the stock LP ROM, that I went straight to the XenonHD 5.1.1 ROM. I can tell you that outta the box (without making any speed optimizations), it was running at 85% the speed of my previous 4.4.4 ROM (SlimKat).
I had Lollipop on mine and Lollipop+3 years worth of junk=a BIG surprise. So I rolled it back to 4.4.4 and it was very, very smooth. Then flashed one of my backup zips for Lollipop (made when no apps were installed) and it was still laggy as hell.
So conclusion: Lollipop sucks ass on this thing.

Android N 7.0 performance issues

After upgrading everything was nice and smooth for the first couple days but now I've hit some hard performance and lag issues especially keyboard lag. I experienced these on the developer previews on every preview so I always downgraded but this is kinda ridiculous to experience this on the official release of Nougat. Anyone else having these problems? Any fix? Clearing cache is not a workable fix, it only helps for a small amount of time say 20mins and then it's right back yo lag central. Hugely frustrating as this is my only device.
Worse than MM? I'm honestly disappointed with the performance of the device. Recommended it to my girlfriend when she had to upgrade from her iPhone, and performance is atrocious on MM. It seemed like a memory leak, because rebooting would help for a day or so, then the stuttery laggy mess comes back. It's performace pales next to my Oneplus One . I hoped the Nougat update would help fix those issues?
Ive never had any lag issues on MM or Nougat
Didn't have lag issues on MM(I'd say performance went doing after the 6.0.1 release especially in the battery dept tho.) but Nougat has been atrocious. I don't understand how mkbhd was saying he had no problems with developer preview or 7.0 because its apparent after a day of use. I've rebooted my phone like 5 times so far tonight clearing my cache each time and sure enough an hour or more later it's right back to lag town. I will say it's gotten better since dev preview 5 but it's still too bad for daily driver. Who the actual **** is working on the Android team at Google? This has been reported and known since preview 1 and yet it seems to never be addressed
Lately Google's quality of work seems to be: ¯\_(?)_/¯
Yeah, I'm seeing bad intermittent lag and stutter on 7. I also saw it on 6. 0.1 though. It may just be a hardware issue with the rubbish 810?

He didn't say seven dot one (7.1), he said seven period space (capital) eye (7. I).
So here's something interesting, after I uninstalled screenwise panel I haven't been experiencing the keyboard and performance lag
No lag here on stock unrooted nougat. Has to be a third party app. Battery life has been a unicorn on nougat I must say. When the phone dirty flashed nougat over marshmallow i had terrible battery life. Lost 25% precent in just two hours! Factory reset cleared that up so o thought. This morning after leaving the house and the charger, phone felt slightly warm on hostler. Checked it and sure enough, down to 80% in 2 hours. Rebooted and problem was gone. I hope i don't have to reboot every day to get good battery life. I believe this is not the same update Google will push to non beta members. Hopefully the "release" version will have these things sorted out.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers mobile app
The 7.0 pushed to the beta users is the same release version, there aren't two different Roms. Also while uninstalling screenwise panel seems to have cleared up the majority of the lag, there is still Ram Memory problems and slight stuttering
Factory data reset after EVERY MAJOR ANDROID UPDATE. If you haven't, you need to do that. After an update a lot of the time the temp and backup files aren't erased after the update and they can lead to performance issues. Especially on a new device you should not see any lag on the 6P on MM or Nougat.
In fact, I have seen my 6P even smoother and snappier on N over MM.
I never experienced any kind off issues on MM was very happy with the performance. Now that I have taking the Full OTA update to 7 I can tell a big difference in battery life and it's amazing. 7 has been running very smooth and buttery for me. But I've noticed that a lot of people that moved to 7 never factory reset their phone BC of losing data n such and most of them seem to be having a bad experience.
Soon as 7 booted after the update I then went in to stock recovery and factory reset the phone then went through the set up installed all my apps then flashed TWRP 3.0.2.1 then made a backup of r he stock ROM. Then flashed superuserUpdate 2.76 booted the phone and restored all app data via Titanium backup ran for a few days to make sure no issues was going to pop up then made another backup.
Currently I'm 7 all stock with stock kernel and root. The only mod I flashed was the soft key swap.
And during the wipe n stock recovery I wiped the internal storage also..
But hope you get it figured out man BC it's really worth the move..

why not just download a free app like cc cleaner that can get rid of files like those?
My 6P started acting weird the last 4 days. Apps will freeze then the pop up says app not responding close it or wait. Also the screen will not turn on when I hit the power button or use the fingerprint reader. I have to hit it many times before it comes on. I have booted into safe mode and still have the problem. I was running Preview 5 so my phone updated to 7.0 stable the day it was released. Everything was running smooth until Saturday night. Now it is about useless. Im hoping someone has a recommendation other than factory reset but I'm afraid that is going to be my only hope. Just don't want to waste another day setting this thing back up.

Will the G6 be ever stutter and lag free?

Well, coming from an S7E, the major issue I have with the G6 is how slow it is when opening contacts, to apps, to camera. I still have my S7E and everything opens faster on it. I know the SD 821 is quite capable, so it must be the LG UI that's making it slow.
I have a couple of questions,
1) I have the 870DS and looking at the trend I may never be able to root. So can someone who has an US version with a custom rom tell me if it has made the phone any faster?
2) And also does anyone here know at all if the 870DS version has any hopes in future for unlocking the bootloader?
Thanks guys. Cheers.
Unlocking the bootloader no, unless it gets cracked which I doubt. Has not happened since the G4.
Custom roms can make the phone faster because they remove a lot of features and run stock Android but almost always the Camera app will really be bad on custom roms (unless based on stock rom).
I have a Pixel and G6. Pixel is known to be probably the smoothest Android phone to this day.
The G6 does not really lag behind it at all. The animations are smoother on the Pixel but thats about it.
I had some intial lag the first day with the device but thats about it.
If yours is lagging consider a factory reset maybe.
@shri080
Do a factory reset in the settings. This helped a lot of people who have lag issues. There is an extra thread for this.
Do a backup of your apps before doing it!

Have you tried possibly a different launcher?
As well as debloating what apps you can?
Also there's always the options in developer mode that IMO truly help with ram allocation and overall speed.
Yes the LG G6 should be lag free and smooth just like the Google Pixel or the One Plus 3T as they share the same powerful processor. I think atm most non Pixel phones are stuck with just Android 7.0 where as Pixel might be on 7.1.1 since 7.1.1 might be better on performance or smoother than 7.0. Once the amazing LG G6 gets 7.1.1 in the future I guess we should see some difference in smoothness or performance. As for unlocked bootloader or root for the LG G6 or any LG flagships, always get the international version single SIM like the LG H870 which already has custom ROMs and TWRP recovery. I don't think the dual SIM will get bootloader unlocked. LG did great optimization on it's LG UX 6.0 which is fast and smooth and is better than SD 835 or Exynos 8895 equipped Galaxy S8 and it's slow, laggy TouchWiz. Imagine the upcoming LG V30 running on Android 7.1.2 on top of LG UX 6.0 with SD 835 would make it the best favorite Android phone of all time! Go to Settings/Developer Options/tick on "Force GPU Rendering" should make the beast smoother or snappier. If root available try L Speed/Entropy/fstrim apps found on Play Store.

This doesn't really make it faster, just makes animations move faster, which personally looks worse to me.
You must be kidding, the G6 is the smoothest running phone i bought to date. I have the 870DS with around 30 apps installed.
My previous Phones were the Note 2, S5 and Note 4. This is what i call laggdroid, horrible...
No lag here, smooth for me

Okay, so i formatted my phone and set it as a new device instead of restoring apps from the previous device. This has over all made the device a tad bit faster and i am kind of happy about it now. Also, my main issue was, the dialer/contact app would always open almost a second late behind my S7E, after the reset it became a bit faster but i was still not happy, So just tried a third party dialer app and trust me it works like a charm!!! Now the dialer app opens as quick as it does on my S7E Since that's the thing i use my phone mostly for, it was so irritating that it lagged a second or half a second behind my S7E. Thankfully now it's all fine
Also, reducing the animation speed makes it more jerky and ugly and it doesn't really speed up the device at all. Hopefully as and when we get 7.1 update, the UI may be smoother
Android 8.0 will fix all lag and battery issues I'm super sure of it its only a matter of time
I honestly think G6 is pretty smooth, this is coming from S8. There ARE times that it stutter, but it's been the LG way unfortunately. If there's one lag I could remove, it's the camera launching lag.

Also, Fulmics rom makes this phone faster and smooth as baby's butt, so if you're rooted and would like an amazing OEM-based rom, this is it

Hell yeah!
Had it on my G3 and since then i don't even miss stock android roms anymore.
I also find the G6 to be a nice smooth phone. But I also have issues with a slow and laggy dialer app. I don't think it's then phone in that case, I think it's the actual app that isn't properly coded/built. Just doesn't seem that good.
I use Google contacts instead, does the job fine, but i left the stock dialer. I rarely use it, usually make calls from contacts, so the occasional time i DO use it, isn't a big deal.

some qns to help me decide if to move to LineageOS

I am currently on Stock Nougat firmware and have been thinking of switching to Los but still undecided.
Can someone tell me how do the battery lives compare between the two?
What are the main reasons that people move to Lineage? When I used phones from LG, Samsung, HTC, I moved to custom roms to escape from the bloat wares. On Essential phone, I don't see much push factors. I'm, in fact, quite happy on Stock but of course, I haven't seen the good things with using custom roms such as Lineage yet and I hope you guys can tell me more..
We are in the same boat. I haven't been getting great battery life on stock, and I've had bouts of os freezing and unresponsiveness thats made me consider rooting. But my main reason for not rooting and going custom is losing the stock camera.
LOS is a very bare bones minimal options Rom, but a very good alternative to stock. You are not gonna be wowed with all the options in LOS, as there aren't many. It's not much different than Vanilla Android really. If you want a lot of options like Dirty Unicorns Smartbar/Fling customizable Navbar, you're going to want to flash a ROM that has it like Resurrection Remix (only a Nougat version for now). I haven't flashed any of the new Oreo ROMs like AOSIP yet, so I haven't checked to see how many features they have, but Resurrection Remix is running flawless on my PH1, and it has more options than any Rom out there. The only way to find out if it's for u is to flash some ROMs and try them out. Unfortunately, on this phone, a lot of Rom flashes require u to wipe ur entire phone, so it's a bit more of a hassle. Just make sure to back up all the things u don't wanna lose.
thanks @teostar and @Airwolf79!
How's Lineage's battery life compared to Stock?
Which is more stable? I do get hangs on stock every now and then, how's Lineage?
I saw somewhere that I can get apps to become full-screen on Lineage. Is that true?

In my experience, no custom ROM I've tried has had equal battery life to stock. They haven't been bad either, but they have all been smoother with a lot less screen jitter. I think they all provide full screen immersive mode, at least I know LOS and RR do.
Thank you! Now it is clearer for me. It is a trade-off between UX and battery life.

i'm on los 15.1 and i have like 6-8 hour sot depending on usage, los is as stable as it should without root and pretty smoother than stock. Full screen is not implemented for now but it should, but it's in 14.1. one handed mode too. For full screen mode in 15.1 i'm using immersives settings with adb right. btw sorry for my bad english i'm french.

Thank you! Really useful information.
What about the camera? Is one better than the other?

essential stock is fine but i'm rather use scrubber gcam which is more fast and with better portrait mode ?
using lineage and stock roms (beta) i really dont notice any day to day difference in battery consumption. If you are looking to improve battery life from stock then you might want to consider using custom kernels instead; they typically have more customization around battery life through governer tweaks underclocking under volting etc.
Just to update that I finally unlocked my bootloader to try LOS this morning. It was total disaster for me.
Firstly I haven't done this for a long time. Secondly I was not familiar with devices with a/b partition. Thirdly, I depend on Google's back up to restore my apps but, for some unknown reason, play store does not restore well in LOS.
Took me 4 hours and in the end I went back to Oreo B3. Still and upgrade from my stock Nougat.

Just would like to update and blame myself for the lack of preparation when I last tried to move to LOS.
I tried again last night, and it was completed smoothly with my issues at all. Now I have a rooted LOS 15.1! It IS actually quite easy. So, as i say, i am just updating to clarify .

I don't think I could go back to stock rom honestly, for immersive mode alone, not to mention all the other tweaks and the performance gain.

To be honest, I was reading the forums and one of your posts was part of the reason I tried again. Can't remember the posts but I remembered your name lol. Thank you!

Haha glad to have helped! Honestly this phone would be up for sale if it weren't for LOS and AOSiP. Night and day difference n my opinion.

what is your opinion on it so far? latest LOS 15.1 vs stock oreo 8.1. What do you notice, particularly in smoothness, battery life, and stability? is it worth it? Thanks

LOS is better in smoothness for me while stock has slightly better battery. As for stability, I think they are about the same. I have been fully on LOS since then as I like the features on LOS, such as ambient display, immersive mode and there has been no reason to go back.
RR is the best so far imo

thanks for your input. how does ambient display work on LOS? does it light up on notification, do periodic screen on, or screen on upon motion? I am coming from an htc 10 sense OS so things are different.
