[Closed] Unable to revert back to EMUI 5.0 : Software Install Failed - Huawei Nova/Nova Plus Questions & Answers

Greetings fellow Nova owners!
I have been using Henkate's excellent AEX ROM on my CAN-L01 for about 6 months now. It runs fantastic but I won a Galaxy S7 in a lucky draw a while back. I want to restore the Nova to EMUI to sell it to a relative.
I have been trying to restore the phone to EMUI 5.0 for a while, but the process always fails when I try to force SDCard Update. I used the following process:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74624117&postcount=2
I have restored the MM backup and put the update.APP file on my SD Card in dload folder. I also tried to put all of the files in the update.zip in the dload folder. My phone gets stuck at step 8. The issue is that when the phone reboots to install the update to EMUI 5.0, the update fails instantly after starting, saying software install failed!
https://imgur.com/cz2UXRV
Does anyone know what the issue might be? Or perhaps share a Nandroid Backup of a CAN-L01 if possible? I have no idea what to try anymore. Any help is appreciated.
I have downloaded the correct firmware packages for my model/carrier (CAN-L01 MTN ZA).

Hi!
Thank you for your first words!
Regarding the failure of installing EMUI 5 update, please check this post and this one. Also, make sure that you've fasbooted the stock recovery.img.

Off topic, but sell the S7 and get more money! Just kidding . I'm still surprised about that though.

I seriously considered selling the S7 when I got it, but the camera and screen is fantastic! Battery life sucks though, and AOSP ROMs don't seem to run well on it, I was quite disappointed.
Back on topic, I've made sure to flash the stock recovery each time before I tried to install the update via SDCard, and I know about the USB cable issue. However, I have only tried 2 newish firmware releases, so as suggested I will try to find one of the earlier releases and report back. Thanks for the help!
Off topic again, I can make a video that shows the performance of my Nova vs S7 on LineageOS 14.1 if you want. It blows my mind how fast and optimized the Nova feels in comparison. I think the S7 Exynos drivers isn't as optimized as the Snapdragon 625 drivers.

Damn, that really sucks. I'm really happy with Nova's battery life.

I see. Alright, then let me know if it'll work. Just a note, make sure that the firmware you're gonna download has data_full zip too or something like that as inside that there's couple of other stuff, including updater app.

That would be really nice and funny . As far as I know, there isn't any video about Nova's lineage on YouTube, so it'll be nice if you do that.
Yes, it must be because it's an exynos. I'm sure that it would've been different with a Qualcomm. Qualcomm is simply the best out there.

I've tried B330, still get the same error. That brings the total of firmware update packages I've tried to 3. I have remembered to flash the stock recovery and unplug the USB cable. I really thought this would work.
I previously tried the method on the Huawei G8 forum (I think), by manually flashing some .img files through ADB. Any chance that that might have messed things up?
Also, I've made the video showing the performance of LOS 14.1 on my S7 vs Nova. The quality isn't great but I will upload it tomorrow. You can clearly see the Nova is much smoother and opens most apps quicker, with the exception of games.
EDIT: This is the G8 forum post I have previously tried

I don't know if fastbooting the images works, as I've never used that method to update. Theoretically, it shouldn't mess anything, but I don't know if it matters what's your system and boot when updating through dload folder.
Are you trying to update through the forced method (buttons) or by dialing that code which I've wrote in my steps?
In your first post, you've wrote "but the process always fails when I try to force SDCard Update, but I don't know what you've really meant. If you've tried to update all this time with the buttons, please try it through dialer on EMUI 4. It always worked me. If you didn't try through the buttons, then give it a try. If I remember properly, I've always got error when I've tried to update through the buttons though. Again, if I remember properly.

I've already tried the dialer. Sigh... Perhaps I should just reinstall AEX then. It's way faster than EMUI anyway. I have tried EMUI 4 for a while and it made me realize how much the AOSP ROMs for this phone is than EMUI. The phone felt so slow, so I tried benchmarking with Geekbench 4 and suprise, my MultiCore score was only 2880! For comparison, I get 4300+ on AEX/LOS.
I think the only real benefit from keeping EMUI is the camera quality and additional modes. The software video stabilization on EMUI5.0 is fantastic, never seen anything so good.

I'm sorry, but i don't have any other idea.
I wouldn't have expected such a big difference in the benchmark lol. When i've went back to EMUI, it always felt slower. That's one of the main reasons i won't go back to EMUI back ever again.
As for EMUI camera, it's really nice indeed and is one of the things i'm missing from EMUI. It's on my to do list (porting EMUI camera to LOS; it was done before on other phones), but i don't know when i'll do it (since i'm working on LOS 15) and i would do it for LOS 14 first since Nova doesn't have an Oreo EMUI camera.

If you want I can help test some stuff, I'm using my S7 as a daily driver, and the relative interested in my Nova ain't gonna have spare money for a while. PM me if I can help test some stuff, I'm always eager to learn.
I'm gonna mark this thread as closed.

Stick with PureNexus or update to Oreo?

I'm currently running the latest version of PureNexus and debating installing Android Oreo. Are there any huge downsides? Is it buggy, slow, etc? In other words, is it daily driver ready for someone who uses their phone all day for music, video, games, EVERYTHING and still wants to tweak the os to their needs.

Unless you're worried about the security updates, just stay on PN. PN for Oreo should be out soon as well.
That makes a lot of sense, thanks.

I was on PN since I got my 6P and updated to Oreo as soon as it came out. I don't regret the decision at all. Battery life is as good or better than PN (I routinely end the day with 4+ hours of SOT and 35-40% left. Your experience may vary depending on usage), performance is wonderful, and I haven't found any major bugs yet. All of my favorite mods work (EX kernel, Pixel mod, Camera NX, WakeBlock, and a few others I'm forgetting).
The only downside is some modifications require a bit more work. For example, to resize the navigation bar and add dynamic coloring I had to extract, modify, and push framework-res.apk instead of having those options built right into the settings menu. There's no custom quick settings tiles and I can't change the number of rows/columns, but that isn't a big deal and I've learned to live without it for now.
As stated above PN based on Oreo should be out within the next month or two. Beans posted an announcement on G+ yesterday explaining that he had a family emergency that slowed down development on PN O, but he is actively working on it as much as he can.

I went from PN to 8.1. Honestly, stick with PN. I used it for a couple days and I am downgrading right now. My battery life was significantly worse (on 7.1.2 I ended the day at ~40-50% battery. On 8.1 I was at ~20-30). I didn't notice anything great about Oreo and found myself missing PN.

Not sure aware of this or not, but beans posted in the PN thread he's working on Oreo for the angler. So you'll soon have the best of both.

I had that issue too. Spent waaaayyy to long trying to figure it out. I think 8.1 has a different encryption method. You need to wipe the phone completely and then do a nandroid restore (or flash PN)

Don't mean to sound like a complete noob, but how did you go on about wiping the phone completely? I've now tried so many things, reflashing TWRP, reinstalling stock firmwares, using Wug's Nexus Rooting kit, ... I can acces fastboot, what do I need to do to be able to reinstall TWRP? Because when I try it right now, I can't acces it. It goes back into the boot loop.
Cheers

In TWRP, format /Data and the internal storage. I also formatted /system just to be safe.

[GUIDE][addison] SETUP Moto z play XT1635-02 : from stock 6.0 to custom ROM.

I have the habit of always asking on a new device no matter how much I think I know!
I have an xt1635-02 (I am US ATT Prepaid)(nano SIM) supposedly here tomorrow so I've been reading tons here.
However, it seems that a lot of the threads are aimed at rooting stock, which I never do.
As a rule, it's trivial:
[!] In this case it seems best to OTA update stock to 7.1.1 if it isn't already. I believe bootloader must be 7.x.x for doing custom Oreo ROMs . Since mine was 6.0 it took about 8 updates OTA and maybe 2 hours(wifi) .
[!]I go to moto site and do the unlock bootloader dance (already carrier unlocked supposedly).
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
[!]Then flash twrp-3.2.1-0-addison.img (Alberto97) using fastboot on my PC. (Ubuntu 17.10 dev 18.04 with adb and fastboot)(dual boot win7)
I do this twice in a row as I have experienced it not working the first time (dead android LOL).(OCD much??? )
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...recovery-unofficial-twrp-moto-z-play-t3495629
- - -
[!] -->then flash Alberto's verity patch mentioned at the top of his TWRP thread
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...recovery-unofficial-twrp-moto-z-play-t3495629
This modifies stock. Else your backups of stock won't boot. Learned this the hard way!
- - -
[!]Then use TWRP to backup (default settings) stock a couple of times and put copies of both on PC (via USB on stock).(or if for some reason my USB-C doesn't work, via wifi to my router using filezilla FTP and phone app: "wifi file transfer" by "DNL Media UG"(needs permission storage=on..) - I had to redo this twice - redo this twice - kept dropping back to stock recovery.
[!]Then flash the boot logo using fastboot on PC - I usually use TWRP for this but these that I found here are not set up to be TWRP flash compat so will just remove bin from zip and flash using PC. I think I have about 4 possibilities that I found on these threads. Nice! Easy.
[!]Then boot to TWRP and flash Alberto97's AOSP 8.1 arm64 ROM. Why that ROM you may ask. Been using mainly that Alberto97 ROM on my Moto G3 (32bit version of course), and love it. There's plenty of time to try all the others!!!
I usually consider 2 root options; SuperSU 2.82-SR5, or majisk 1520. (for future readers, these are the latest at this time.)(besides I'm very used to them.)
With SuperSU I have had no probs wiping all 4(Dalvik/ART, system, data, cache), flash ROM, flash 8.1 gapps, flash SUperSU, and boot to install.
With majisk I have sometimes had troubles during install if I flash majisk in the first batch so I tend to wipe all 4, flash ROM and gapps, and boot to install. Then when I finally hit desktop, boot back to TWRP and flash 1520 and reboot.
I need root to use TBPro - no restoring on first time with this 64bit ROM- got to do it the hard way!
SO I believe that's it, but if anyone sees a flaw or problem in there, I would appreciate your help.
Thanks!!!
yep look right, i would have added backup EFS and Modem partitions, if you want to be completely safe.
For now, open gapps 8.1 are only unofficial, i would feel a bit unsecure to use that, but it's only me.

Merci! Many thanks for looking in!!!
Yes, forgot to add that - did much xda search on the efs thing and best I found seemed to be a twrp-3.1.1-0-EFS-addison.img which I may very well flash first and do that since no other TWRP that I looked at offers backup efs. Official and squid2 derived (G3) don't. I assume Alberto's doesn't. Seems like I did it very manually on the G3. If you have it it's a pretty good guarantee that you'll never need it! (Murphy axiom)
As to unofficial gapps, I've been testing about 5 different 8.1 ROMs on the Moto G3 over the past couple months and if the gapps aren't built in to the ROM(some pixelexperience roms), all you can get is an unofficial gapps, or do a minor simple hack to an 8.0 so it will accept it. Usually devs will include it. Bless Alberto97 for not including it so I can select my own!!! But I've had no prob with gapps. Open gapps project has 8.0, but of course they won't work on a true 8.1 unless minor hack. I was planning on using open_gapps-arm64-8.1-aroma-20180109-UNOFFICIAL.zip (from https://cloud.kenzoroms.club/?dir=opengapps) unless you have a better idea. I wanted to grab camera from aroma(somebody's idea), but I also have about 5 other cameras and gcams waiting on the Sdcard that I want to test, simply because there seemed to be disagreement on what works on Alberto's new 8.1 build, so wanted to be able to report.
Thanks again!

Thanks for great link! yeah I think I used adb as well as an app last time. I'll add recovery this time so that's 3 backups on internal storage (and copied to PC) should be enough! (yes dear readers I am serious about this - 3 times! They are so tiny! And that pretty much guarantees I'll never need it, but if I do, it's childs play to get it back.)
Thanks!!!
If you're wondering about the delay, they sent me a -01 (Droid)(Murphy's law), so they paid for a UPS next day air label back to them(mailed at 4PM) - don't know if I'll get this going before Sat! Oh well!!! Never take these things too seriously!!! Gotta be costing them a chunk! I did briefly turn it on and stuck the SIM in it and it did show LTE on my ATT, but there's a few bands missing that are on the -02, so will wait. Pretty display, though!!! Really looking forward to it!!!

yes. stock 8.x is a no-no. This one that is coming is 6.0.1 So I will let it ota update to 7.1.1 after giving it a thorough check-out, then try unlocking it, etc. Sound right? I have no interest in any of the hardware-type addons, just the plain phone 3/32 octacore etc. Why this one? - I love the reception (radio) strength of Motos, plus a ton of other things. I stick with them. Plus it's all Albeto97's fault for deving on AOSP 8.1
Lol Alberto97's roms are buttery smooth!

I think they are. He recently came out with an 8.1 AOSP version for the Moto G3 and I love it. I test others, but that's my daily driver. Sure not perfect, but quite good enough for me!!! So I figure when I get it (Tues?) that's what I'll put on it. There's always plenty of time to test others!
Okay, since I am waiting for phone (Tues) , obviously I am worried about "what-if"s and so researching on what to do, "if".
I succeeded in finding a nice zip for 7.1.1 with the Nov security patch
https://firmware.center/firmware/Motorola/Moto Z Play/Stock/
(I am US)(there are many others at that nice site!!!)
That took a lot of time.
Then I needed to be sure that I could get RSD lite to run, and tried and tried to no avail to get it to recognize my phone (even on my laptop) (I was testing with an old Moto G3 stock zip and my G3 phone) before some post gave me a version number much higher than at the RSD site. google gave me:
http://rsdlite.en.lo4d.com/
version 6.2.4, which worked perfectly.
I really need to write a short guide on this stuff - feels like I'm re-inventing the wheel, even though many folks have written much before I came along!
The reason for the above two is that for a while the last few days I kept running into folks who had taken 7 OTA and wound up with a bricked phone. So, yes, I just did a search for "brick" on xda in moto z play and will start reading them! LOL
Quick EDIT: I think I am wrong in that brick assumption - the first 3 I looked at involved encryption and 2 downgrades to MM (which is a no-no). I will read further.
edit2 - nevermind - most are downgrading to MM. Wish folks would just ask before doing that. That is a no-no of most (all?) phones. -

I have no problem with various cameras getting good image, but sometimes on still first pic doesn't save. ( tried camera MX and Professional camera hd. I'm sure lots work about the same.)
Forgot to flash Alberto's verity patch right after flashing TWRP. So I had to RSD lite 7.1.1 Nov 1 and start over - no big deal! OP corrected.
Hello Kris,
I would like to ask for a link where I can download a working RSD so I can unlocked my bootloader.
Thanks

Need custome ROMs!

Can someone please make some ROMs for this device? Or can someone port from s7? We have custom recovery but we lack custom ROMs....
I second that.
Yes, please. I read somewhere here that elephone haven't released their sources, but since the Eragon developer managed it somehow I guess others ought to be able to rebase theirs on the relevant parts of his - ?
Anyway to help community of elephone 8 to create custom ROMs?

Eragon was just a very very slight mod of the original rom by elephone. in order to get a real custom ROM like Lineage OS, we need to compile it from sources and to do that we need elephone sorce code.
Another way is porting a custom rom from another phone with the same CPU (helio x25) and try to make it boot by editing some stuff, the problem is that its very dificult to do the trial error to get it booting because we don´t have access to the Recovery or to the fastboot directly ( The button vol+ doesn´t work on fastboot menu so you can´t enter recovery or unlock the bootloader....)
Maybe someone could try to port a ROM but honestly, with xposed you have all sorts of customization and to be honest the effort isn´t worth it for the phone as it is now. Maybe with Oreo update from Elephone we can have some good news like source code or a fix for the buttons in order to access recovery by pressing buttons with the phone OFF.
Fingers crossed
Thank you bihariel for making those points very clear to the club here.
Also just to share something personal. Six months ago, I sent a few emails to Elephone asking about the hardware key combination to access Recovery and requesting bootloader unlock. I've never got their response back. I think they deliberately disable the key combination. Therefore, personally, I don't have high hopes for an easy access to Recovery or even the source code for our phone in the near future.
Fortunately, we still can root it. Experienced users can optimise/customise the stock rom to their liking with no hassle. Some new users though would still love to have a custom rom just to easily flash on the phone, even if it's quite close to the stock rom. Perhaps, when we have an Oreo rom from Elephone (even without its source code), a slimmer/cleaner rooted version of the stock rom will still be nice for some of us.

You´ve got a very valid point there...
fingers crossed for the Oreo update.
Hi anox, I'm very interested to hear which mods you've done. I haven't bothered rooting this phone, only took off the two adups apks, but would certainly do so if there are some significant advantages to it. Much obliged if you'd share, thanks in advance!

Hi Plowmanx, I'm not really an experienced user here. I just need root for some apps and customization, nothing much. In fact, it's just the way I'd use any android phone. They might not be useful for you at all.
Anyway, my list goes like this.
root apps: adaway, flashfire, lmt launcher, mixplorer, quick reboot
magisk modules: busybox, audio mod lib, viper4android
xposed modules: gravitybox, xuimod
I removed most apps that came with the stock rom.
I might have also modified some system files like build.prop here and there.
Hello everyone, sorry if I'm off topic. But I'm just wondering. What's the way to be right now? Eragon or Stock? I'm experiencing some lags with the stock rom on many apps.
(Facebook is nearly unusable and videos at 240p)
I have no idea on how to root a device btw, and one last thing, is it worth it removing fota package since elephone is not giving us an Oreo update?
Stock rom minus adups here. I only use FB on the phone via Ecosia browser and it seems to have no problems. FB app has always been a dreadful battery hog. What other apps lag?

I use Puffin browser for years but seems to be laggy at the s8 Scrolling is not smooth at all.
When I have Facebook, Messenger, Instagram Running in Background honestly most of the apps I try to run are slow and show some lag (even YouTube)
Forgot to mention that I use Malware Bytes and Nova Launcher which may slow down the device but it's a way of living for me. Both are MUST. ?

that is exactly the reason I do not bother porting, no hardware key recovery access just makes the whole porting process extremely tedious.
For those of you that cant root the elephone s8 using the sp-tools because of not knowing what to do to the elephone s8,
1. Simply install the windows drivers, which you have to follow some specific instructions on allowing windows to install unsafe drivers, all in the above site, visit...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/elephone-p9000/how-to/how-to-guideline-install-mtk-drivers-t3344042
2. Extract sp-tools and the root file etc. and make a note of where you extract them...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/elephone-s8/how-to/tutorial-elephone-s8-root-tutorial-t3688171
3. Follow the instructions on setting up sp-tools and then click the download button in sp-tools, then turn your phone completely off, and then plug in your phone to the usb cable that should be connected to the same pc, while holding the VOL + button. Sp- tools should begin to flash the root file to the phone by itself. Once done, turn the phone on.
4. Download and install magisk from https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/topjoh...5-6-4-release/ on the phone and run the app.
You should have root access after that.
For those that flashed twrp and cant seem to access it when powering on the elephone s8 from the off state, there is an app called CWM, there are others, but I use this, download and install the app, and when you open it, it should ask you options such as reboot into recovery mode, reboot into download mode, etc. , I just choose reboot into recovery mode and the phone restarts and takes me directly into twrp. The CWM app makes it easy to enter which mode you want without holding any volume and power keys, etc.
Wondering.... anyone know if any of the Elephones that came out AFTER the S8 can reboot to recovery via buttons?

I don't think so.
I know for a fact that U Pro cannot.
Looks like that's how Elephone makes phones these days.
Stupid question ... What would happen if you tried to flash an Elephone s9 rom? I'm kind of expecting bricking but thought maybe ...

Root and Upgrade from 6.0.1 to ?

I have an SM-N910P (SM-N910PVPU5DQI5)
hardware: N910P.05
OS: 6.01
Build: MMB29M.N9100V0U5DQI5
Wi-Fi only since the connection to Sprint is no more (use my Note 8 for that)
TL;DR - where can I find the ROM for this phone for 8.1 Oreo? Where can I find instructions on how to do it?
I'd like to root it (have oneclickroot) to get rid of the crap finally; then upgrade the OS. Version 8.1 would be fine, 9 is buggy on my Note 8 so not sure I want to go that far yet.
What I can't find is what I need for the phone I have to do what I want. Yes, I've done searches. Yes, I've even used my Google Fu. But most of what I find is from 2016-17 or earlier. After so much researching and reading, I am in acronym hell.
ROM = something you flash to upgrade OS (yes?)
ODIN = some special something that can do all but I can't find (makes my head thor....sorry, couldn't resist)
TWRP2 = twerp something that helps with booting but not sure what else
I have found threads that discuss it but there's a lot of broken linkages both here and elsewhere due to age of articles.
I am a root-virgin. I was going to root my Note 10.1/2013 tablet but replacing the battery did not revive it. Funeral was beautiful, though.
There is a Lineage OS Unofficial 15.1 trlte based on 8.0 Oreo. However, being an unofficial version it will have some bugs. My suggestion is to search XDA Note 4. Then scroll down to Android general development Snapdragon and go to LineageOS 16.1 unofficial version, scroll down and it will have a link to the unofficial 15.1. Then look for the download version trlte. And just for the record, I totally understand what you mean by acronym hell. I went through that also. Had to stop reading to search 5 or 6 times within 1 paragraph of reading. It takes time to understand but if you persist youll get the jang if it. As for the oneclickroot I can offer you no info as I have no experience with it. I will say, Odin is the preferred method here on XDA. There may be members that look down an app to root. I am not one of them as I began my root with the S3 years back. I was unfamiliar with Odin, drives, and PC. Rooting with an app helped to get started. As. for your search, you mentioned most from 2016 & ,17. Yep , I know. The developers for the most part have moved on to newer phones.
Oh, if you have TWRP custom recovery, I strongly recommend backing up of all your parttisions before you begin, meaning check all the boxs before you back up. Also, there is an app called Tipatch which patches TWRP adding the ability to back not only data but alll internal memory. Make sure you TWRP is set to backing up to your external SD. If your looking for something close but not Oreo. Try GRX home zip on stock deodexed rom. Good luck
Twrp (team win recovery project) is a custom recovery which replaces your stock recovery. It is very important to download the correct one for your phone. I use twrp 3.2.3-0-trlte.img.tar and flash it with Oden. Make sure to turn off auto reboot. YouTube search for more details. A custom recovery lets you flash custom roms, kernel, and various zip files. The most important thing it does is backup all the parttisions. If you make a mistake later on soft brick your phone , you backup may be the only thing that gets it working again. I recommend backing up all parttisions (check all boxes ) before you root or mod anything. That way you have a clean backup of your original firmware. Backup everything to external sd and if possible make a duplicate and save to pc, flash drive...... And yes, its a bit overwhelming at first so do some research and ask questions if needed.
Back up what's that? LOL.. When I backed up mine, then started the wipe process I accidentally wiped away my back up. LOL lucky for me I have a complete stock firmware on reserve if it is ever needed. I'm itching to try something new, but might just stick to what i have now..

LOL , Im glad you liked that"back up whats that?" LoL Perhaps I should have been a bit more tactful in my responses but I couldnt help myself . Just couldn't seem to convince that member the importance of making a backup before flashing and modifying everything. As for the systemimg fail in Odin, the PIT file from another firmware has partitioning that is incompatible with 5dq15.
It could be a combination of DM-verity, DRK, emmc/mmc fail and all the rest.

Ya I forgot to make my back up go to the external SD card, or at least transfer it to my computer desktop.. I love having complete control of my phone.. It actually works better than my Pixel 3a Xl... Only issue I have found so far is after upgrading my youtube vanced, I lost screen rotation, and can't figure out why.. I'm going to uninstall it just to see if some how that caused the issue.. If not then time for a complete reinstall... LOL I always visit this forum at least 3-4 times a day to see what is up.. Hopefully more people will come to realize, that the newer phones are just not worth the price, as they have become to restrictive and to expensive, plus not to mention to intrusive.

The 512gb Note 10 plus at about $1,200 is an experience device. The hardware is impressive, however, restrictive US versions have locked bootloaders.
Your YouTube Vanced app may conflict with YouTube when updating. I believe you have to uninstall YouTube updateds and disable automatic updates in Google PS. Then install YouTube Vanced . Advice to confirm this as Im not certain of the exact procedure. Just be careful not to unistall Youtube Good luck.

Youtube was originally installed, but taken out with TT back up and root, before Youtube Vanced was intalled.. So I went ahead and reinstalled the rom. Will see what happens over the next few days.. I know a fix was posted in the Rom thread, but the link is broken, as it is no longer being supported naturally.. But hope someone has a copy, for future use, rather than keep on re-installing.

Yes. YouTube vanced is much better than the regular youtube.. But I can't seem to get the rooted version to work at all. I use the non route version with micro G. But you have to use a slightly older version as a newest version keeps on Forest closing.

I haven't the experience with YouTube Vanced so I can not advise. As far as the broken links in the developer threads it seem to be a common issue. Im guessing , the more time that passes the less the links will provide a download. As I notice your post on Dr. ketan rom and it links to a n910g xda thread. If you do go back to rooted stock deodexed rom before installing a custom rom then consider copying your system csc file/folder to external sd. Also, you may wish to check out the GRX home v8 touchwiz mod .zip. Its modern and customizable but can not easily be ported to the Dtux rom as some setting overlap but once familiar with the setting in GRX then you can avoid conflicting issues with the rom control app of the custom rom. GRX works really smooth and I liked it so much than when I installed Dtux the touchwiz launcher felt out dated. Anyway the last pic is an app for themeing the Play Store.

Stuck on the 5DQ15, I noticed something in looking threw a .zip custom rom with knox system app removed./deleted. The files/app inside the folders were deleted. The folder was not delete but the property permissions were changed. I found this to be consistent rom to rom developer to developer. Ill post a few pics in the next post. So now I do the same thing with a root file manager. I just copy and past the folder to external sd before I delete files/app from the system. Then back out and change the folder permissions and reboot. Its recommend to wipe dalvik/chache making changes to the system but I get lazy and just reboot.
If you still have the Dr. ketans M12 rom or another rom with system apps that have been removed then you can look threw the rom .zip and copy the touchwiz home app to the external sd . I use an older app (ZArchiver pro) to be able to copy an app from a .zip without the need to extract the entire .zip to do so. Perhaps the newer free version will do the same.

Trying to root, stuck at the first hurdle

Hi guys
I have a spare phone now my son upgraded, the S5 SM-G901F. I thought it wound be fun to install another software, possibly more up to date. So I first set out to root it but I haven't played around much with this sort of thing for long while.
I googled and found it seemed to be Odin to use so I downloaded 3.10. Also downloaded cf root. I went into download mode and when I plugged it in, the light in Odin lit up showing successfully connected. When I added the cf file and clicked start it went through some steps but stuck at Recovery. Img and wouldn't progress further.
I tried multiple times, tried a different cable and USB port and also Odin 3.07 and a different cf file even though I think it was the same one but from a different site. All no better.
Originally I bought it a few years back, used from a colleague. I think it was a carrier phone, EE iirc, and I had to get a code to unlock the SIM to use with mine. Maybe that also means it's software is locked?
Any help much appreciated
Thanks, marc

well to be honest, i would need to spend some time, "Googling" your model .... . I believe , your S5 is a Dev phone, meaning, it was not set up for any carrier, just for running demo's and such. IF this is true, I have no true answer for you.
Odin yes, you need that, that is true! (Believe 3.07, 3.09 and 3.10 work the best for these phones. Had tried a very newer version, several month back, and it did not do the job.. something like 3.14 or 16)
I recommend going to Sam Mobile, and run your model # through them. They will give you all the info about your model and possibly the latest firmware for it.
Sorry that I can not give you all that you are needing. I just don't know a ton about those S5 Plus models. (( I had to even look 'em up too) the plus has a slight better chip was well as graphics, but again, I dont know of any that actually work on a modern carrier like sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile , etc.)
Thanks for the reply mate.
It definitely isn't a Dev phone, my colleague definitely had it on contact from a carrier initially.
I hadn't actually realised or noticed it being a Plus model as some sites mention the Plus and some don't.
Any other help from anyone appreciated

OK, Was only going off your model # you had given.
Did check... Odin and a good copy of CF auto root... That should be that.
Then of course, get away from a really old non sucure os (6.01 MM was their last made) .
Other than those 2 pieces, you should be good to root
Not pushing, or anything but LineageOS is rather good and does run well on these!
Plus, get a monthly security injection!

Well, I would have to say NOPE!
Well only trying to keep your Q, on the top, so folks that might know, could help!
BTW, when I looked your model up, totally different CPU and GPU, which might need a different CF auto root zip, or a different one to actually work... Since hardware is different.
Just guessing on that, but, could be wrong. Rather busy at the moment, but will look up your specs again, and see if I find something for ya.
Mean time, Hopefully someone could chime in and point you towards the correct path to take...
OH
Q- What sort Recovery do you currently have? (Stock or custom (e.g. TWRP))
Might want to check for one for your phone.
I would actually start with TWRP, see what they have for ya.
( Will need Odin for this! BUT, once you have a Recovery in/on the phone, then you could use Magisk to root ot try CF and see 8f that works for you (I use Majisk) Plus add in the fact that you should make a Back up, of your current system! In case of issues, you can always jump back to Stock. )

Cheers mate. So, some progression.
Firstly i didn't have a custom recovery or root. I was getting stopped at the first hurdle.
So, i figured it had something to do with it using a carrier firmware, EE, in the UK. So i found a stock European firmware and successfully used odin to flash it. Then i flashed CF root and TWRP. All good.
So with new confidence i flashed Resurrection Remix Android 9. Although it seemed to have worked, each time i tried to complete set up, straight after imputting my gmail address, the screen was black. Not BSOD type though, if i pressed home it went back to the home screen to i just couldn't complete set up.
So i tried Lineage and that was a boot loop.
Not sure if part of the issue was Gapps but i was definitely using the correct version. ARM, Android 9, stock.
I gave up, reinstalled the stock Android marshmallow and rooted again and installed TWRP. that's where i am now.
Shame really as i fancied a more up to date OS.
Thanks, Marc

Wait, isn't what you were wanting?
Well at least you now have a Recovery installed! Now, with that of course you can now make a back up of your stock!!!
( other words,.. MAKE A BACK UP! That way, you only have to wipe the system, data, cache and BAM, in the Flash of zip, your back at square one...)
OK, not sure if you picked up a new info about LineageOS, across the pond....
But
They ran into some issues, (soon and hopefully sooner, it will be fixed). Now, after that, they will be dropping LineageOS 17.1 Official!! Yes, for Galaxy S5 too
So, keep an eye out for that, cause am in same Boat, waiting for the Official release.
( personal, I run LineageOS, Magisk (Root and some goodies.. Unfortunately I do tend to add Ggogle, but like Pico, nothing larger. Do flash a kernel also. That said, rather stable, and most everything works) at least for me.... Just waiting for Official 17.1 to roll out! (like just about anyone left that has these phones...)
