I am trying to replicate the functionality of a Galaxy Note II notification LED on an LG V20 for Sprint. AFAIK, there is no such LED on the V20 although there are some differing opinions on whether the camera flash can be used of this.
The standard email notification icon available when the main screen is off is tiny and for some reason, it disappears or gets pushed aside by other notifications. e.g.
1) I send myself email and I can see the icon within a couple of minutes
but
2) Email comes in overnight but when I check the phone in the morning, the email icon is not there although some other icons for updates and whatnot are.
I have the stock email app on the Second Screen and when mail comes in, it puts an indicator on the icon. But, this only works when the main screen is on. With the main screen off, the best I can get are the Quick Tools, none of which are relevant to me.
Is there any way to get the app icons to appear on the Second Screen while the main screen is off? Or, are there any third party apps which can show clear new email status with the main screen off?

Do any exist and what does it take?
Basically I'm envisioning the standard Android lock screen, except for the right slider. I don't use it for vibrate, so it goes unused.
So, I would like to replace the right side slider with a smart button that allows you to open notifications based upon what you have received.
If you have an unread text, it shows a text message icon and sliding it opens to your texting app. Same thing for Gmail. Obviously its possible to have more than one type of notification, so there would need to be some sort of hierarchy (say Texts > Gmail > Email > WordFeud > Facebook > etc) so that it only opens the most important to you. Users could choose like 3-5 apps that would work with it.
If you have no notifications, then it should default to a single app you use regularly, but does not necessarily have/need notifications (Camera, Google Reader, etc).
Changing the background color of the icon would also be a good way to help differentiate between the default slider, and one that would open a new notification. For example, on the current stock lock screen, the vibrate slider has a gray background. You could keep the gray background for the default app, but when you have a text or email, the icon would change to that app and the background could change to a specified color (say orange for a text, green for an email, etc).
In addition, I wouldn't mind having the weather on the lockscreen as well. Too often do I find myself having to unlock my phone just to check the temperature outside. Obviously the down side to this is having to poll for weather data, but it is something I'd be more than willing to live with. Especially if one could chose how often it updated (30 mins, 1 hour, 3 hours, etc).
I realize most of this can be done with Widgetlocker (or maybe Cyanogen), but honestly I don't like using it and it does not feel polished enough for me. So would something like this have to be baked into a ROM, coded from scratch or whatever? Are there any devs who do this kind of work? is this level of detail even realistically possible given the nature of Android? is this even the right forum?
Just saw the last part, but I think it's still your best bet.
Just curious why don't you like widget locker, it does everything you asked for?

i love the puzzle unlock feature.
i would love for the puzzle piece to be the chicago whitesox logo.
thankyou in advance.
Since I got the Note 3 a week ago, I've spent most of that time trying to find a way to get proper lockscreen notifications. "Proper" in this case means pretty much what LockInfo IV did on jailbroken iPhones (if you're familiar with that):
Each notification chosen by the user is displayed on the lockscreen as a separate entity
Each notification (text or email) can be viewed in its entirety on the lockscreen, if the user chooses that option (such as by tapping to expand each notification)
Notifications are persistent, in that they remain visible on the lockscreen whenever the phone is brought out of sleep mode.
I've tried LockerPro, Nils, Pop-up Notifier, and others and they all fail in one way or another. I'm led to believe that lockscreen notifications are limited by the way that Android populates the notifications panel. The big problem is that if you get more than one email or text, they all get lumped together into a single, useless "You have <x> number of new messages" entry, which means you have to unlock the phone and launch the respective app to see who it's from and what it says.
This completely defeats the purpose of screening notifications on the lockscreen.
I'd appreciate recommendations for any app that will make lockscreen notifications useful. Thanks to designgears, my phone is rooted now, if that makes a difference.
Try dynamic notifications. It mimics the moto x.
Won't show everything though.
Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried that one and it didn't do it for me, but I'll give it another shot at some point.
For now, I've stopped worrying about lockscreen notifications, since push email is basically broken on the Note 3 anyway. It's like a time machine back to 1995.

Hey - I was looking for the same for my N3....i've been trying Dynamic Notifications on and off for awhile now. At first it works, and then just stops. Maybe give Knock2 +V2..I'm testing it now and so far it seems to work flawlessly for me
I'm just getting used to my new Yotaphone 2, it is living up to my expectations so far but I've got a couple of questions...
1. Can you disable yota cover? The manual mentions an option to disable it but I can't find it on the yota hub settings, the scenario is I have a lock screen with swipe pattern to unlock the device, so the yota cover is unnecessary. when mirroring, I end up removing the yota cover, then putting the unlock pattern in , the EPD is all about convenience for me and this double step to unlock is annoying.
2. The "next event" widget should be awesome but it doesn't display "all day events" from the calendar so its somewhat crippled, a true agenda widget would be better but any how my question is why the hell is an address in Moscow showing up as the location of all my calendar events when displayed on the "next event" widget on the EPD?? Any one else getting this?
3. Anyone else getting stuck notifications only on the "any other notifications" icon (the bell) if so how are you removing or resetting the counter?
Thanks for any advice you can give me

Hey dude, just spotted this thread, sorry didn't answer sooner. You may have figured the answers to your own questions out by this point but i'll reply anyway -
1. Not sure about stopping yotacover, have you tried simply removing each page (via menu > remove in yotacover) until none are shown? Haven't tried it but might work.
2. The next event widget is working fine for me, showing all day events and the address it shows is fine. Perhaps this has been fixed in an update?
3. I get stuck notifications occasionally, mostly they come from apps that leave a notification, whether invisible or not, like ad block plus. These tend to go away eventually and stop showing up after a time, maybe the phone gets used to them. Occasionally there are random notifications that I assume are left over from when there were actually things I had not dealt with or swiped away from notification drawer. These also tend to go away, and I think this has been addressed a little bit in the recent update.
Hope you got the issues sorted and if not I hope you get some use out of this.
Thanks for the input, to add my findings since my original post.....
1. I've got used to yotocover and how it works so it's not bothering me so much now, I may try your en suggestion tho and delete the set up of the yota covers to see if that stops it.
2. The next event is working as I would expect now, it shows all day events and the Moscow location has stopped showing up on my events thank goodness. I'm guessing this improvement is due to the software updates that have been coming via the play store.
3. One of the notifications I was getting was from the google now weather notification that shows up in the notification shade but not on the top bar, also avg notifications do the same. Any notification what so ever will flag the " bell" on the EPD, it would be nice if we could configure that. Or give is an android wear notification yota panel, now that would be awesome!

Is there a way to remove persistent notifications from the second screen? I don't need to know that Tasker (for example) is always running.
Settings>General>Apps>Notifications.
Thank you, but I'm aware of those settings (reached even faster if you press and hold on the notification and clicking on "more settings"). They are pretty much the same across any Nougat device outside of using the System UI Tuner which doesn't appear to be accessible with the V20. My question was specific to the second screen which is only on the V20 (and V10, but I'm new to all of LG devices). Can notifications be removed/hidden from just the second screen?

I have this same question. Were you ever able to figure out how to remove notifications from the V20's 2nd screen? I love the quick access to apps, but hate seeing the notifications in that context.
So long ago... Although I still have my V20, I stopped using it about a year ago after a dropped and cracked screen issue. But I don't think I ever figured this out.
I picked up an LG V20 recently, and am loving it. I see it lacks an LED notification light, instead relying on the second screen to show notifications when the screen is off. Apps like Textra let me theme the color of its notification, which makes it much easier to identify at a glance. Was wondering if anyone knew of a way to theme or replace (for example WhatsApp or Hangouts notification icons to be a different color. Thank you very much for any suggestions.

I still think it'd be great if there was a way to make the whole 2nd screen flash a solid color at maximum brightness a few times because yeah it grabs your attention more so than a static icon
I found this thread through a search. I am wondering the same thing as I evaluate a V20. The email notification icon on the Second Screen (I use the Stock email app) is very small. Is there any way to make this larger at minimum and best case, flash continuously like a notification LED which the phone otherwise lacks? Just making it the size of the other Second Screen app icons would be a big help. I would prefer not to try rooting/customizing as I am not confident in my skills and am concerned about bricking the unit.
