Screen Mirroring, sharing between two Surface RT - Windows 8 General

Hi Guys
I am looking any solution to wirelessly share the desktop screen from one Surface RT to another Surface RT with only wireless access points.
There is one Micro HDMI HD output to display Surface RT screen on TV, Monitor and projector.
If I connect both Surface RT tablets by a Micro HDMI cable, can I able to project desktop screen from one Surface to another Surface RT??
I wish to demonstrate presentation between two Surface RT.

would it be nice to have a wireless touchscreen monitor on a windows 8 desktop? basically lets say a 14 inch pc monitor (touchscreen and thin) that u can take anywhere within the reach of its wireless transmitter...now u can have a powerful tab around the house

I think wireless HDMI is the way to go in terms of display, connected to an actual tablet, but alas HDMI INPUTs in a tablet are not something ive seen
the issue you have with wireless solutions based on wifi 802.11x is that its crap and has a lot of latency, a remote desktop would suffice then but it not as fluid as id want. so some form of wireless HDMI and Bluetooth perhaps, one of the issues with using wifi for controlling it is there is a lot of redundancy built in to the TCP stack which isn't needed for this use.
Wacom make a wireless graphics tablet with display that would work, but its VERY expensive!

New way of home computing: 1 hybrid tablet/laptop only, with hdmi to a big display?

I'm thinking about going to a simpler home computing experience: replace a separate tablet and a desktop computer with just one Windows 8 tablet-laptop hybrid, one with enough graphics power to run an external, high resolution display.
E.g. use the one computer device as 1) tablet, 2) laptop with an attached keyboard and 3) dock it to an external display, keyboard and mouse and run it as a "desktop" system.
Some of the hybrids seem to come with Core i processors, Windows 8 (full, not RT) and HDMI (albeit the micro kind). Will they be able to do what I describe above?
Do you think this is generally doable?

Ps. One day I think phones can do the above, e.g. act as phone, tablet, laptop and desktop pc, with different peripherals attached for different computing needs. 1 processor, 1 system, 1 times the personal data. But we're not quite there yet.
I don't know about other brands but Lenovo has the laptop/tablet combo Thinkpad X Tablet. I would wait until they come with Windows 8 out of the box, but the current X230t comes with an ivy bridge core i3 or i5 processor, the high end ones with i7. The graphics can handle two HD screens via DisplayPort and VGA, and two more if you have the dock. It is a convertible tablet, with the screen attached on a swivel that can flip back onto the keyboard and "click" in. It comes with a stylus that is very similar to the S pen (Wacom digitizer, pressure sensitive) minus the software "hover" features found on the Note 2.
The only problem with this is it is pricy... currently $1479 with the core i7, 4gb RAM (standard), 320GB storage, bluetooth 4.0. However you do get the industrial, apple-rivaling build quality that can survive many drops. Also, if you don't want the dock (I find it kind of pointless) and want more juice you can buy a "sheet" battery that literally fits right under the whole laptop, increasing its thickness by a little to double your battery life.
About phones, check out http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android/features-and-specs. This should work with Motorola's lapdock, (sadly, they are discontinued) and soon we may see a "tablet adapter" for phones that come with an external battery and a large screen that you just plug the phone into, switching Android into "tablet mode," built into the OS already.

Android mirror to Windows 8

Does anyone know if its possible to mirror the display of my android device to my touchscreen PC?
I can mirror my phone to my HDMI TV, so if I have HDMI input can I mirror my phone to my touchscreen windows 8 tablet and control it? I have Surface RT, so I am really doubting it, but I would like to know if anyone even knows if this is possible in any version of Windows. What would kick ass, is if you could take a rooted device, plug it in, force tablet mode, and control your phone, and all applications with your tablet. Instead of using Bluestacks emulation, you would think you could just plug your phone in and use it. I assume it would either need to be via USB, or Micro HDMI
also, is it possible to use my Surface RT as an external monitor for my PC? I know I can use an external monitor for my surface, but can you do it the other way around?

No, it is not possible.
Root the android device, install a VNC server, and use a VNC client on the desktop to see the Android's output.
Just to note, it won't properly forward touchscreen events for multitouch and the like.

[Q] Dell Venue 8 Pro - Can I switch it to RT

So, I got the Dell Venue 8 Pro a few months ago, thinking that I'd want this super powerful portable machine that would be running a full version of windows. I've come to realize that using Windows on it is less than user friendly on such a small tablet. I boosted the icon and font sizes, but I think I would like it much more if it just ran Windows RT. The battery life seems to be less than great with full windows, maybe too may process running in the background, maybe I've let it sit too long on the table between uses. Is it possible to put RT on it?
I'm probably the first person to ask for RT over the stock OS.

IIRC: Windows RT runs only on ARM CPUs. So with your Intel Atom you're most likely not able to use RT. Even if you could get a licence (which are only handed out to OEMs)
Windows RT is windows 8 compiled for ARM and with signature checking enabled for desktop apps. It would not help your problem even remotely and is impossible to install anyway.
Yeah, I really don't know what problems you expect RT to *solve* here... RT is just normal Win8(.1) except it blocks most Windows software and uses a different kind of CPU (which your tablet doesn't have).
I think I am just trying to "solve" the user interface problems that I have with full Windows 8.1 vs RT. Win 8.1 is not very input friendly on an 8" screen with no keyboard or mouse. The lack of USB compiled with the not so great battery life makes this not a great option with bluetooth accessories. The power port being the only input jack makes using an adapter pointless. I didn't consider the processor limiting it's use. I guess I'll just put it on ebay...

By user interface, I meant using the 8" touch screen for full Windows is not a pleasant experience. If I'm using a USB to OTG adapter, I can't charge it. I can't use a mouse and a keyboard (unless I use a hub, and I'm not sure it would work, because I haven't tried that).

Hubs work, its full windows 8, anything that works on your laptop or desktop works on the tablet. You can get USB OTG cables for simultaneous charge and device although the venue only trickle charges like this. Powered USB hubs would of course be running your USB device from external power not from the device battery (which last time I checked competed with android tablets anyway unless you have gone totally overboard with 3rd party software which permanently runs in the background)

Do you have a recommendation for a USB-OTG cable and a nice portable powered hub? I got a cheap USB-OTG cable from ebay and it is very hard to put in my micro-usb slot, almost to the point where I am nervous about using it because I am afraid that it will damage the port and essentially junk my tablet.

I also just use a cheap ebay cable, no recommendations here I'm afraid.
Portable powered hubs. I am not aware of any powered hubs specifically marked as being portable per se. The powered hub I use at home for my devices is pretty compact though, its a D-Link DUB-H7 but as with all current powered hubs it is mains powered. Pimoroni manufacture a 4 port powered hub specifically for the raspberry pi, this one is actually pretty compact.
There was a company which used to sell a USB hub which had a microUSB plug wired in the OTG format and an integrated battery, but its no longer in production which is a shame because that would be absolutely perfect now.
But you can buy battery packs with a USB output. If that was combined with a standard (non powered) USB hub and one of the cables I've just posted above then that would allow the hub to run from the battery pack instead of the devices USB power. Or an approach I have personally done before (for other purposes though) would be to take a soldering iron and simply stick a DC barrel jack onto the output of a 5v regulator and an RC car battery pack on the input and use that as a replacement for the mains power supply with a powered hub (although you would have to choose the hub wisely as not all take a 5v input, some take 9 or 12v and regulate to 5 internally, the D-Link and pi ones I mention above are both 5v input though).

Why not just use a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard? You can use both and you get to charge the tablet

So use the "Modern UI" (i.e., apps from Windows Store). That's the same thing you'd get with Windows RT. It's still not clear what difference from Windows RT you are after?
Windows RT doesn't magically make the full Windows UI and all existing apps magically work on an 8" screen, rather it restricts you to Windows Store apps which you can already run on your device.

I don't like using bluetooth devices because I hate charging them up daily. I'd rather just plug in and be set.
I've had a Surface RT and found the UI much easier to use. I'd rather have better battery life and live in the Microsoft App store than using full Windows applications. The problem is that with full Windows running, even if I try to stay in the RT mode, I still get kicked out to windows to have to use the control panel, settings, and use other programs, etc. It's not a huge deal, it's just keeping me from really using it because I get a little frustrated with the flipping back and forth between desktop mode, trying to hit tiny buttons (such as minimizing and maximizing windows) and killing process that are using resources.

Using Windows 10 with Waveshare 5" 7" HDMI screens? Found

I build portable hand held Windows 10 computers using stick PCs, a Kangaroo Plus mini PC and attaching them to 5" and 7" HDMI screens. A hand held device being one that can be held in one hand and mouse movement and text input via an on screen keyboard can be entered with the other.
I overlay a resistive touch panel and use USB controllers PenMount PM6300A-8 Controller board or Micro Chip AR1100 boards in digitizer mode. In digitizer these will fill the following touch controls:
1 Touch = equivalent to Left Mouse Click
2 Long Press = equivalent to Right Mouse Button Click
3 When the windows screen is rotated landscape to portrait and vice versa touch activity remains under the stylus and moves as expected.
4 Stylus press and hold for dragging windows and icons around the screen is available.
5 The equivalent to Right Mouse Button Click SHOULD NOT be activated while dragging.
The HDMI screens I use are from Ebay or AliExpress and marketed towards Raspberry PI consumers. They come with a touch panel built on and a touch controller built in.
If it is a capacitive touch panel then I definitely remove it and replace it with a third party resistive touch panel and use an external USB controller. Capacitive finger touch is not fit for the purpose of activating the small menu buttons in desktop software such desk top publishing and graphics manipulation. A resistive touch stylus point control is needed.
I have not been able to get 5" or 7" HDMI screens with a built on resistive touch panels and built in touch controllers to use all the touch controls listed above, that is with the Windows 10 OS. This is annoying because that would enable building a slim compact hand held portable device. Currently the external USB controller boards add depth and bulk. The PenMount board being the worst where it's JST connectors add 10mm to the home build devices height. The Micro Chip AR1100 board is less bulky but a built in controller would still make the screen slimmer and neater.
There are a number of vendors on Ebay and other web sites marketing 5" or 7" HDMI screens with a built on resistive touch panels. Their sales are mainly focused to the Raspberry PI so I assume touch can be configured and work satisfactory with Raspberry PI Linux Operating Systems. I wrecked it by opening it up and damaging some circuitry. This was before I knew that it couldn't be configured with Windows 10 therefor I have not tried using the AR1100 firmware utility on the backpacker screen with Windows 7. If anybody has had hands on experience of doing this I would be interested in their comments.

As indicated above finding a 5" HDMI screen on its own is hard to find. It is easy to find an small HDMI screens with touch panels already attached. These can be replaced by a third party touch panel and be operated by an external USB controller. It is also cheaper. I purchased 5" HDMI from AliExpress described as "GeeekPi 5 inch 800*480 LCD HDMI Touch Screen". As it had a resistive touch panel and controller built in I tried that first. Out of the box it booted up up into mouse HID mode ( 'Tablet PC Settings' with 'Pen And Touch' were not available in the control panel. ) The mouse touch cursor aligns and stays under the stylus point. A long press activates the equivalent to Right Mouse Button Click. But! When the screen is rotated out of landscape 0° mode all touch alignment is lost. Without the option to use portrait mode using Windows Desk top software becomes more or less impractical on small screens. If anyone has an idea how touch can be tweaked to stay aligned when the screen is rotated I would like to here of it?
To make resistive touch practical with Windows 10 panning needs to be turned off via the registry. Panning can be stopped by a registry tweak

The PenMount board being the worst where it's JST connectors add 10mm to the home build devices height. The Micro Chip AR1100 board is less bulky but a built in controller would still make the screen slimmer and neater.
There are a number of vendors on Ebay and other web sites marketing 5" or 7" HDMI screens with a built on resistive touch panels. Their sales are mainly focused to the Raspberry PI so I assume touch can be configured and work satisfactory with Raspberry PI Linux Operating Systems. The promotional support for working as a monitor for Windows 10 is something like "supports Windows 10/8.1/8/7, single touch, and driver free" The Windows plug and play driver that loads in doesn't always seem to work for me and when it does it doesn't fill the five touch functions above I require.

Waveshare seem to market a range of 5" and 7" HDMI screens. Some readers may have bought these and have them working with the Raspberry PI and other Linux OS devices. They could have not had reason to try and test touch functions fully with Windows 10. If there are readers who have bought Waveshare HDMI screens with built in resistive touch controllers and could plug them into a Windows 10 computer as single monitor, or as a second primary monitor to test touch I would be grateful. I need to know if the all the five functions above will work with any of them.

My experience with Windows 10 resistive touch so far might be of interest.
PenMount and Micro Chip AR1100 boards can be configured as HID mouse or digitizer mode. If configured for digitizer mode when booting with Windows 10 the control panel 'Tablet PC Settings' with 'Pen And Touch' are available. It is the same for Windows 10 Settings. If the choice for HID mouse mode is used the tablet setting won't be installed or be available in Windows 10.
Of the two control boards my preference is for PenMount as its supporting software for Windows 10 will configure the touch controller for calibration. The AR1100 firmware utility does not work with Windows 10. The screen needs to be transfered temporally to a Windows 7 computer. The AR1100 utility does present itself in Windows 10 and show configuration tables but when entries are made, example for digitizer mode, and set, from then on the utility reports no EPROM found. It can be reset in Windows 7.
Adafruit sell a 5" 'backpacker' HDMI screen with built in resistive AR1100 FPC touch controller. Out of the box this screen's touch controller worked as a HID mouse but there was no long press function for equivalent right mouse click. I tried using AR1100 utility software with Windows 10 to change it to digitizer mode. As above after the first attempt the utility software always reported no EPROM found. I wrecked it by opening it up and damaging some circuitry. This was before I knew that it couldn't be configured with Windows 10 therefor I have not tried using the AR1100 firmware utility on the backpacker screen with Windows 7. If anybody has had hands on experience of doing this I would be interested in their comments.
I am not recommending anyone who uses a 'backpacker' screens on a Raspberry PI to use a Windows 7 PC to configure the controller to digitizer mode. I'm not sure of all the consequences. What works with an external USB AR1100 board controller might might not be recovered in Windows 7 the same way for a built in FPC AR1100 controller. Adafruit instructions are for using the Windows utility to calibrate and set up resistive touch for being transfered to the Raspberry PI and they promote the Mouse HID mode. They show no help or instructions for using digitizer mode for Windows Devices.
The 5" HDMI screen and resistive touch panel I had working got smashed. Finding a suitable external replacement resistive touch panel is easy. As indicated above finding a 5" HDMI screen on its own is hard to find. It is easy to find an small HDMI screens with touch panels already attached. These can be replaced by a third party touch panel and be operated by an external USB controller. It is also cheaper. I purchased 5" HDMI from AliExpress described as "GeeekPi 5 inch 800*480 LCD HDMI Touch Screen". As it had a resistive touch panel and controller built in I tried that first. Out of the box it booted up up into mouse HID mode ( 'Tablet PC Settings' with 'Pen And Touch' were not available in the control panel. ) The mouse touch cursor aligns and stays under the stylus point. A long press activates the equivalent to Right Mouse Button Click. But! When the screen is rotated out of landscape 0° mode all touch alignment is lost. Without the option to use portrait mode using Windows Desk top software becomes more or less impractical on small screens. If anyone has an idea how touch can be tweaked to stay aligned when the screen is rotated I would like to here of it?
To make resistive touch practical with Windows 10 panning needs to be turned off via the registry. Panning can be stopped by a registry tweak

Found the 5inch HDMI LCD (B) The Model (B) has a built on resistive panel and a buit in touch controller. Touch works with Microsoft Windows 10 out of the box. Touch control fills the 5 touch functions asked for.
