Best way to return phone to stock? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I got a new Galaxy S9+ yesterday and I am letting go of my old S8 but I would like to completely format it and return it back to stock first as I would like whoever takes it to be able to receive OTA updates and things like that.
I have TWRP and am running a custom ROM so I don't know how to go about it.
I found some update.zip files online which can be flashed from the SD card but I realized that they require a stock recovery.
Should I just download the latest firmware possible for my region from Sam-Mobile then flash it all in ODIN? And if so, do you have a tutorial or step-by-step guide on how to do it? I don't want to mess it up.
Thank you.

I would download firmware and flash with odin to return to stock.
How to use Odin can be found by searching on XDA or by doing a Google search.
It should be noted that since you have already modified your phone (TWRP/custom rom) you will not get OTA updates even reverting back to stock.
Also your Knox is tripped and can't be reset.

How to return phone to bone stock?

Anyone have a set of instructions or a link to returning my phone to completely bone stock? I know I can flash an unrooted and stock firmware, but the bootloader will still be unlocked. I need to RMA my phone and the store has turned me away in the past for having a modified firmware or bootloader.

The boot loader is not locked stock, so that's not a problem. Simply download the MF9 firmware and install using odin. Perform a factory reset in the stock recovery. Then use Triangleaway to reset the flash counter and you will be stock with no signs of tampering.

dont you have to be rooted to use TriangleAway? I would assume that using Odin to go back to MF9 would cause you to lose root, no?
Correct. You need to be rooted for TA.
What I'd do is use TA first. Then use Odin to install MF9 (or one of the older stock rom's). If the download screen still says custom, do another RTN/Factory Reset. That should clean it all up.
You could also try to just flash the stock recovery. Then run TA and see if that resets it all to Official on the Download screen. If it does, all you should need to do from there is Full Unroot from the SuperUser app.

Download the ODIN one click for SPH-L720_MDC_Stock_Restore.exe and follow the instructions on that site.
Puts you back at original release and then if you want, you can update through Sprint for the two upgrades you'll need to get back to MF9. You'll have everything back to stock, no counter trips and everything back at zero. I wish they made the ODIN one clicks for MF9, they're so easy.

Thank you! This is what I needed....
Coming from the Galaxy S2, it seemed like there were a million 1-click ODINS. Any idea why the S4 doesn't have these?

Well, I think that answer is complicated because there was some sort of fall out between users here at XDA and people that were part of the SXTP forums or they started their own forums or whatever. I don't really get into those politic things, I just look for resources that are useful and thank all those that are involved. That and there really aren't as many builds coming out for the S4 like there were for the S2 and the S3 for that matter.

[Q] Noob Question on upgrading to 4.4.2 for Canadian Variant SGH-I337M

My apology if this has been asked as I've scanned through a few with not much luck.
Came across this and i went to sammobile and dl the TELUS 4.4.2 firmware and judging by this article, this is an non-wipe install via Odin3.
I know it is best to wipe and start fresh but hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction as I would like to upgrade without wiping.
Thanks a bunch!

You cant update your phone without whipping your device if using odin unless its an OTA cause if you do you will most like end up in boot llop thus just backup and then flash using odin, what i assume from the article is that it wont wipe your internal sd card but will wipe your data i.e applications and settings etc.
Depends where you are trying to get to..... if you are not rooted on 4.3 and just want to go to 4.4.2, I would just use Kies. If you are rooted and want to go to 4.4.2 then yes this looks like the right method. Things to concider are.... do you want to be able to go back to 4.3 at anytime is so, you really shouldn't use this method as I believe it is going to update your bootloader which means no going back... If you intend on rooting anyway, I would suggest using CF- auto root, added a custom recovery and flashing Mapleleaf rom..... plus the NC1 modem... this is mostly stock, you will have root access and retain the 4.3 bootloader should you want to revert back to 4.3.......this will trip you Knox so if you want to keep warrenty well this isn't a good way to go either... unless of course you have already tripped it...

[Q]about backups, root, TWRP recovery

Hi,
a little background first and then my question, i'm not new to rooting phone and so on, and every device i had up till now was rooted almost in the second i got home after buying it. but rooting via tools others made , i'm not a developer and no expert on ADB or such. just used other ppl guides and methoods.
but, my new s7e international version with the exynos chip is one week old and not rooted yet. and i didn't find my stock Rom on sammobile website, so i was wondering should i root or not, decided to root, so i got all the files for rooting ready, but since i didn't find my original stock Rom on the web, yet, i was wondering how can i backup my original stock rom before rooting it so i have it just in case something goes wrong.
questions:
1. is there a way to backup the entire original stock Rom that cam with my device ?
2. if i flash TWRP via Odin, and only TWRP , without Chainfire's CF auto root . will i be able to backup my my original rom?
thanks for helpers

Does smart switch do a full rom backup or just my app data?
Sent from my SM-G935F
Theres no way to backup your entire phone as stock (not that I know of), Once you root that thing you can never use smart switch (again not sure but with knowledge that everything Samsung updates/updating related will not work once youre rooted), but going back to stock is easy.
Once youre rooted and got TWRP installed, you can now backup your whole phone using the TWRP backup.
Stock Firmwares:

For now i leave it stock. Once i see my operator stock rom in sammobile list ill root it. Because for once i want to have my stock rom as a backup
Thanks anyways

How to restore back to PB1 from Verizon logo

Hi all!
I need to restore phone back to latest stock. Problem is that it is stuck on Verizon logo screen.
This is my old phone that I gave to my daughter while back. It was rooted and was asking for update. Because I thought it will be easy to unroot, I simple went into SU and tried to uninstall from there. Little did i know how it will end up.
I've looked around and cannot find latest stock that is ODIN flushable.
Could someone be so kind and point to download location?
Another question is how to restore system status. OTA fails because of this, i guess. Currently bootloader shows it as custom. I guess because root. I'm I right? Would flushing stock allow to get updates again?
Sorry for lame questions. It was long time ago and I totally forgot what was on that phone. Recovery shows BOK3. So, this stock will be OK too.
Any suggestions how to return it back to life will be appreciated! If possible preserving data. But I do not care about root, bootloader etc. I only want it to be latest and greatest because kid has no clue what is safe or not, so I want it be patched and secure as much as possible.
Hello,
You can find an Odin flashable tar file at the bottom of the OP here. This will restore it to stock PB1. No root or anything.

Thanks for quick reply! However it is not exactly stock, correct me if I'm wrong. The idea was to get stock, so all updates in the future will be OTA.
After heavy google I found a couple of links.
http://www.galaxys5update.com/galaxy-s5-stock-firmware/
http://www.idroidspace.com/official-stock-rom-for-samsung-galaxy-s5/
Both have stock roms links for multiple providers.
Download speed is crazy low!
So, I will still appreciate if someone has something direct/faster

SM-G950F Root

Ok, I have rooted Galaxy S4s and 5s, usually the T-Mobile versions. I just ordered a used SM-G950F off ebay. It did not say if it was Nougat or Oreo.
Been searching, and have not found my answer, so I hope someone might be able to send me a link or advise me.
Want a rooted S8. Stock rom would be ok, but I would prefer custom down the road.
This is how I have been rooting the S4s and 5s
Put SuperSU zip on phone.
Then flash TWRP from Oden and not let it reboot. Do a battery pull, and then start the phone to recovery, then flash the SuperSU from TWRP.
Can I do this with the S8 ? (SM-G950F)
Thanks!
Come on you gurus, just take 1 minute and help me out ..... ffs
or maybe I posted the question in the wrong place, or your bored with the question.
I was a mod on another type of forum, I posted a sticky ... you dumb asses

But seriously, I heard about a bootloader, (version 2?) that if I try to flash twrp might brick my phone. Have not actually pulled the trigger on buying a SM-G950F yet, but want to know if I can attain root on this device if its on android V8.0
I did try searching, but it just sits there with no results no matter what I put in the field. Might be because I am in Alaska and my internet SUCKS!
I am at the point I would pay someone like $20 via paypal if they know what they are doing and they want to give me Tech Support

The process I've followed is as follows.
Now please take into account that I flash twrp and part of that process is that data partition needs to be formatted, so make sure anything that's needed back it up.
Have a look at some roms, download one to your memory card.
Flash twrp via Odin, you will need to wipe data in twrp and return to twrp.
Flash the Rom in twrp as normal.
Now if you want just root, flashing cf-autoroot via Odin is the of other choice, flashing magisk or supersu will involve twrp so like I said earlier you'll end up wiping data.
Hope this helps in some sort of way
Thanks! I have been searching for hours in my free time to see if I can do this. I just read in a few threads that if the phone is on Oreo it would have a locked bootloader. I went thru that helping my buddy root his ATT 337 S4. Almost bricked his phone.
I will be starting with a new phone, dont care about tripping knox. Just want root so I can use titanium backup to freeze/uninstall any of the bloat. I would get a costom rom after root eventually.
I will get a SH-G950F ordered. I just didnt want to get the phone and not be able to root. Almost ordered The SH-G950U and its got snapdragon, and I read thats not the best version if I have a choice.
I love my rooted S4 but its kind a turtle so need to move forward.
Thanks So much for your help sofir786 !!!!!
