Good afternoon everyone. I'm a total (and I mean TOTAL) novice and haven't a clue about hardware, software or firmware, so please be kind.
I bought a ZUK Z2 Pro off Ebay. I like it. It looks nice, it's pretty fast, the battery lasts ages, it's a good size in the palm of your hand and it's got loads of storage.
However, I live in the UK and it's come with this 1.9.104 ST version of ZUI which I believe is some custom ROM installed by resellers to make it compatible for international markets. It's terrible and doesn't do half of what the phone's supposed to do. What's worse, I believe there'll never be any updates on it, so it's likely to be extreme vulnerable from a security point of view. I want to be able to customise the phone so I get the type of functionality I used to get with my OnePlus One.
I'm not interested in becoming a programmer and I don't want to have to keep wiping my phone every time some new ROM comes along, but I just want a ROM that's not going to crash and at least alerts me when I've missed a call (which doesn't happen with the crappy ROM I have now). I want to get an update to Nougat when that comes to the Z2, but it looks like I won't be able to do that either given I don't get any OTA update notifications.
I'll need the Play Store integrated too, of course. Any advice or recommendations for a version that I can use, is in English and will deliver some updates when I need to get them?
Thanks in advance.

Use the cm Rom from Emmaus, on zukfans.eu. It's very stable. At the moment only the vibration isn't working.

This one - https://emmaus.pro/?dir=Zuk Z2 Pro/CM13
Thanks guys - this is very helpful.
One more daft question for the experts: given the review of the regular ZUK Z2 (ie: not the Pro that I've got) I've read today on Trusted Reviews, which highlighted the same problems I have, is there any real issue with installing the regular official up-to-date version of ZUI from ZUK themselves, and then selecting English as a language?
If I did so, I presume that means I won't have the Google Play Store integrated? Assuming that's the case, is there a way round it?
Thanks again, and apologies if all of this is blindingly obvious to you guys. As I say, I'm pretty much a babe in the woods about this stuff (I once tried installing Oxygen OS on my OnePlus One and failed to the extent I just threw it in a cupboard and bought a new phone).

If you want to stick to zui, you could also head to zukfans.eu, there is a global rom with multilanguage and integrated Google play services
So, since November, is there a better suggestion for a stable, updateable ROM for ZUK2 PRO?
I find it very difficult to find one that is not broken. And I don't mind minor broken stuff like vibration, but things like camera or not being able to call, that's important.
I was collaborating with the one from Edgrr000 and emmaus in https://forum.xda-developers.com/zuk-z2-pro/development/rom-lineageos-wip-t3551507 but it looks like it is abandoned now.

thank god i'm not the only one finding that a €300+ device should just work and nothing else
Feel free to use the Stock rom. Everything work as it should do.
Or use at least this one:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zuk-z2-pro/development/z2-pro-miui-8-touch-drivers-support-t3520833
As the first post says, I am also a novice and dont understand terms like flashing, rooting, TWRP, Qfil etc (I know I m dumb).
I had bought a zuk z2 pro, still on its way, from a supplier who installed a multilanguage custom rom. I tried to read threads here and on the zukfans eu and honestly I m getting more confused...some say stock rom is the best, others mention cyanogenmod etc.....All I need is the english language and google play...does that mean stock rom is enough? will it update automatically to nougat 7?...and another important question...how am I going to remove the custom rom to the stock rom? would that be safe? thanks
Stock ROM is Chinese and had some English translation. A load of things are still Chinese. So far I'm happy with mokee 7.1. A good translation and almost no Chinese stuff
just got mine today with global rom and android 6.0. The gallery app crashed all the time so i flashed it with stock rom and android 7.0. the stock rom has to much chinese for me so looking for a new rom. whats the best and most stable out there at this date?
after this very good tutorial, I finally got myself out of this zuk-whatever-it-is-OS... and I love Mokee.
running MK60.1-z2pro-170403-RELEASE.zip with ease and smile, and I do not think a sec to switch back to ZUI.
tnx, think i'll do that. can't get contacts from gmail to dialer or change launcher. i'll try mokee before i downgrade the phone to a musicplayer
@boygav, i suggest zui v2.3.044 ST very smooth, stable and fully functional...just root and remove chinese apps and u r good to go... I can guidde u if u need assistance
I recommend you the Mokee 7.1.1.
Everything work great (but no u-health and u-touch).
I made a tutorial to install this ROM from the beginning
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zuk-z2-pro/how-to/howto-install-mokee-7-1-1-unofficial-t3582686
ROM page :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zuk-z2-pro/development/rom-share-lr-team-zuk-z2row-z2-pro-t3567710
Why not use easily official download site?!
https://download.mokeedev.com/?device=z2pro
Every time up2date and no need to uplaod anywhere!
When I installed my Mokee, there was no Official Mokee version.
So now you can installed the nightly one from official download. But I don't know if everything works well like the unofficial.

Apologies for the delay guys. Nick - I may well take you up on your offer. The security on this ROM is pretty hopeless - I was being spammed really badly with pop-ups the other day there (and it was nothing I'd downloaded or installed either - my browsing history is pretty spotless, I like to think). Seemed the phone had just installed something overnight.
If you have an absolute idiot's guide to installing this and what the hell rooting actually involves, I'd be most grateful.
Many thanks.
Hello,
Many people already asked this question on many other forums, and they have been blamed by everyone because people consider stupid to buy an A1 and ask for a MIUI when you have Mi 5x that's identical and already run MIUI rom.
THOSE PHONES ARE NOT IDENTICAL
In fact, A1 runs LTE (4g) bands that Mi 5X doesn't have. In Italy the majority of the LTE is on Band 20 for example, and this is the reason why A1 is having lot of success like the other phones with a GLOBAL version (Redmi 4x/Redmi Note 4 Global etc).
What we're asking for is not a rom: the rom already exists.
What we're asking for is not a porting: the phone's HW is THE SAME so there's no need to work or fix anything.
We just need a way, a tweak, a solution, a trick, a "something" to avoid the A/B partition problem and flash the xiaomi.eu rom for Mi 5x on A1 to have a FULLY UNLOCKED phone that can use ALL THE LTE BANDS and also all the advantages of the MIUI rom.
Can somebody help us, now that you know that's not only matter of "PLS port MIUI on A1 cuz it's beautiful plz plz plz"
As italian, i'm totally afree with you...i just want the MIUI features and the 20 LTE band.

But still, why do you need Miui so badly when you have stock Android ? Because of special features like dt2w and so ? That will come here also when custom kernel arrive.

MIUI has an optimisation than stock Android hasn't. RAM cleaner on the Recent tabs, Security Center, Built-in call recording, sound recorder, dual space (that for dual SIM it's very important) and many others and features..
I guess when kernel source is available developer will be able to port miui regardless of band and any other limitations..

Miui has very aggressive optimization that I hated, because many apps had misbehaved, I always turn that off. Ram cleaner is nonsense but you have it in stock android too. The options in security center, call recording, sound recorder can be achieved by 3rd party apps. Dual space is like 2nd account.
Don't get me wrong, I generally like miui but there isn't any option that I miss, and multitasking is way better in stock android, apps doesn't get killed after 10 minutes.
Stop forcing your opinion on others by asking why do we need MIUI when have stock android which is better. It is just basic preference. I like MIUI over stock android and perhaps over any custom rom. It is personal taste.
Do I know that MIUI is not as optimized as stock android? YES.
Do I still want it? YES.

I guess that was meant for me (next time pls quote me). Well I have my opinion an I feel free to share it, as you share yours which I appreciate.
I still think that there is nothing that miui has that can not be achieved in stock android. It's just the cosmetics that bothers you. You knew that this phone is pure android, you knew that it has 2 partitions and you should have researched if there is miui rom/port available before you purchased it. Or better, you should purchased it when miui rom/port eventually will be available. And there are good phones from Xiaomi (global ones) even cheaper than this with Miui 9.
Btw, I believe someone (maybe you) will port miui after xiaomi release kernel source, but then we would be allready on Oreo.

Ok, then show me how can I achieve built in XiaomiAccount, Mi Cloud/Gallery, Mi App store, Xiaomi Notes, etc...
I don't care about the bells and whistles if these services working good!
And that fine grained permission management would be good, not that simple dull one from stock android.

And how is all that different then Google account, drive, photos, play store, keep which all are working great if not better then miui (especially the web versions) ? As I said, there is nothing in miui that can't be replaced. And what do you mean by dull permission management ?
And there are 2 ways of how you can achieve that: wait till xiaomi release kernel source and try to port miui rom, or get a global version (if you are in Europe) of some other Xiaomi device.

Although I am not sure but I think that using Qualcomm Flash Tools you should be able to install Mi 5X ROM with Mi 5X partition table and get it up and running, but if these devices aren't that similar inside then you can end up with a hard brick. After flashing using QFIL you might have to flash Mi A1 modem for A1 band support...
PS: Don't do this and backup EFS and other critical partitions if you decide to do it anyway
But if we flash (on one of the a/b partition so you can set active the other in case you have make disaster) only the system and boot partition from Mi 5x fastboot official room, it may be enough?
Of course you will have to wipe data...

The reason why I bought this phone is because I didn't want to throw 800e on Pixel, and I wanted a cheap phone with a pure android. This thing is a real successor of the Nexus line.
There are so many global versions of xiaomi devices outhere, that there is no need for this phone if all you want is a miui. But you can always try to port it. That's the beauty of development.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Frankly, I don't know what is wrong for asking. Usually so called real technical people will tell people off if you want this why don't you buy that kind of argument. I see that the one that asks this question has nothing wrong. Everyone of us having such experience when we buy something from the market, we realise that there is a gap in functionality or even down the aesthetic feels, gestures or even some of the commands arrangement that looks stupid....etc, therefore, we asked for something we felt that has done very well, and wish that it could be done in this. If we always have to put up with what is in the box, we don't give the chance for the company to improve, and you ultimately don't help to improve the products.
After reading information from different forums, sometimes I felt sorry for those people who scoffed at people. Maybe you are protecting the brands, or protecting somethings that you feel so much attached to and disregard other people.
May I suggest that if you could not offer a better solutions, or if you think that this is not worth to do it. Just keep quiet and let other people try to answer. Or if you would like to encourage it, such as this example, a simple words like "I like the idea too!" will probably help. Words such as "No way there will be MIUI on Stock Android Phone...etc." If you believe so much about no way, would you willing to bet your neck on your chopping board? With enough incentives, someone will come out with a solution.
Sorry if I sound harsh, but this is how innovation and revolution comes about.
There is nothing wrong with asking. But there is everything wrong with asking the same question every day, in every section and always starting a new topic. You got the answer already, "currently not possible, if you want MIUI, but a device with MIUI". One would expect, that guys wanting MIUI will be satisfied, but no. They'll just create a new topic and ask the same question over and over again. If someone ports MIUI to A1, I'm pretty sure that there will be a proper topic and announcment for that.
Btw. words like "I want it too" can maybe help you to find similarly frustrated people, but that's it. Xiaomi won't read it. Google will not read it. Developers don't care, if they'll do it, it won't be because you want it (donation might be motivating though). Just look at Xposed for Nougat or Oreo topics, hundreds of useless posts like "waiting for an update..".
I would understand negative reactions if this thread would request Xiaomi to replace Android Stock with MIUI on all Mi A1 models for good! But it's addressed to developers on this forum and you'll loose nothing if someone will work on it. Why would you comment against it if you don't like or need MIUI on your phone?... This is beyond my understanding, but sadly the internet is full of this kind of thinking.
Dual app is a feature you can not have it in Stock as fully operational as in MIUI. Some apps (like FB Messenger) will not get push notifications on Stock for cloned apps.
You can use Second Space with one account and you don't have a replacement for this feature for now.
Permission Management is far more complex than even any Xposed module.
China build have Automated Task which again, no module could replace it, as for example: you can schedule to disable just vibrations and nothing else on a specific time of the day.
Notifications synced online.
Calculator with any kind of functions.
Call Recording.
One Hand Mode accessed by swiping from Home button to the left or right. You don't have to loose other functions using different shortcuts. (Double tap is just not efficient).
You have Wallpaper Carousel for your Lockscreen.
You can combine multiple themes to create your best appearance. Stock will never be as beautiful as MIUI can be, but that implies you have some taste for design and art.
All of this are BUILT IN and no root needed or any additional work!
I'm sure I have missed some other details, but when you love MIUI, you just need it, without any explanations. And a lot of Xiaomi phones doesn't have band 20 (800 Mhz) within this price range and specs.
Or maybe you just like to have them both available for your phone with Stock as official. Why's that wrong? ...
Absolutely agree! And additionally, all my data syced to mi cloud, just 1 click to restore. And it is unusable on android one. I too would buy a Mi 5x with B20 or A1 with miui!
I'd love to get some totally un-biased views here, including pros and cons. This will probably also help others given the current circumstances and wading through old threads containing up to 4000 posts is a real PIA. Current info condensed into one new thread would be great and not introduce clutter in the ROM threads.
Given that even if we get Oreo, there will most likely be no further official updates, just wondering, from all of you who have used many ROMs, what is an honest view of which ROMs are nearly bug free? Are any bug free? For me stuff like call and camera issues are a total deal breaker. I use my phone for personal and work, including interstate and minor overseas travel. Not going to even install any ROM that is compromised in some way.
I put OmniROM MM on my Oppo Find 7 and that was fantastic. It even got updated to Nougat and I think still has updates so I reset it to a non rooted, stock (Omni) state and passed it on to my eldest daughter. It's being enjoyed and well used still.
I'd really like to get that kind of service life from my Axon 7 as it is a very good phone still.
I reccomend Oreo AEX,although i heard that dualsim is not currently working
Just like asking "what are the best headphones?", or "what are the best speakers?", the only real way to tell how well a certain ROM will work for YOU on YOUR PHONE is to try it. Even between phones of the exact same model, there will always be different experiences across users. Backup, wipe, flash & see if the features/performance you find are what work for you.
Well that won't be happening. I use it for work. Can't be flashing it all the time. Just needs to work and leave it alone.

I'd use raystef's stock based roms then, check them out.
Most are nougat, one is oreo beta, pick your poison.
I've had really good experiences with Official lineageOS. It has been a seamless process without any hitches. I'm personally waiting for the official release of lineageOS 15.1 (if and when it comes out). I've installed lineage on various devices and have been super happy with all of them. My Moto G Titan feels like a new phone after I've installed it.

It's very device specific though. Sometimes a custom ROM (such as LOS, OMNI etc) will work well on one type of phone and be buggy on a different one. Not all phones work the same on them and I think the Axon 7 is one of those that ends up with buggy ROMs. The camera and DAC are complications that can be hard to get running well, also dual SIM can be an issue and I use it all.
If it's a choice between custom with bugs or stay on stock Nougat I would stay stock.

The feedback on LOS doesn't seem to be too bad and I do understand that since I am also still stock but the problem is that the stock ROM is filled with bugs aswell. The screen brightness bug I get sometimes, the call bug, my Google play store crashes often, my GPS doesn't work properly etc etc. Those are all bugs the stock ROM itself has.
coming from the HTC m8 and this is the second closest thing to a cheap phone that throwing build quality away! (or is all glass). the first being the HTC 10 which is actually cheaper at 160$ but for people on that side of xda said that its battery cant handle anything. what about the Axon 7? I'd be flashing Stock on day one so skin isn't a factor for me.
No. the phone has a very good hardware, but the software is very unstable and nothing works. stay away.
Mine works. Still my daily driver on stock Oreo. I think many people stuff with their phones too much and ruin them.
I have bought mine several weeks ago and I am quite happy about it. A good thing is that there are lots and lots of working ROMs and utilities for it. It is almost unbrickable also.
I love the phone. I prefer Huawei but zte is great too. THe axon 7 is a great phone but the axon m is on sale everywhere for 200. I would get that. comes with the 821 and 4 gb of ram and fold in half screen.
I'm still using my Axon 7 as a daily driver. I think for $200 it's still a solid buy in 2019.

Can you elaborate more on what you mean by the software is unstable and nothing works? Just curious because I've been running all versions of stock Android and never encountered anything unstable, nor would I claim that nothing works. Phone works awesome even in 2019. Sure we don't have any updated cellular bands, or most recent hardware, but the phone is still solid for general use.

If you are ok with being on Nougat for the rest of the time you have this phone, then it is a good deal for you, use Nougat stock and stay there. Everything Oreo is broken in some way and drains more battery, ZTE gave us broken Oreo and quit dev for this phone.
Then there is Pie GSI via Treble, which will break more features and opens up another mess of things to learn, and you will be flashing things almost daily trying to fix something, which will most likely break something else.
Hardware specs are good, but software is a mess. Unless like I say, stay on Nougat.
As much as I love my Axon 7, and not going to replace it anytime soon, I think the Pocophone F1 is a much better choice hardware-wise in 2019 and it costs not much more than 200$.

If you are ok with being on Nougat for the rest of the time you have this phone, then it is a good deal for you, use Nougat stock and stay there. Everything Oreo is broken in some way and drains more battery, ZTE gave us broken Oreo and quit dev for this phone.

What about the LOS and PIE based roms? From reading some of those threads it appears they work well? No?
Hi there guys. So, for the ones that are promptly telling me to search the forum, I'm already say I tried and it was overwhelming to me. A lot of options here and I'm confused. I'm away from modding for quite a while, I think the basics are still the same, but the options are crazy, there are a lot.
The context is... My OnePlus 5 battery is dying and I got a S8 (SM-950FD) from a family member, but the OneUI, honestly, is pure garbage on nitro, there's an ad for McAfee on it for crying out loud. Also, it's not as fluid as the OxygenOS on my OnePlus and I'm missing some options, like the one to disable mobile data usage in the app data options, OneUI disables only background data usage, not enough for me. And I bet that there are apps to do that, but than, I think it's more bloat anyways, having a set of apps to each do just it's one thing.
But so far, the one that I'm kinda inclined to use is LineageOS 17.1 (lineage-17.1-20201215-UNOFFICIAL-dreamlte), but I'm still insecure about it. I chose this one because it seems that everything is working, and that's very important, because I'm going to use it every day in it's plenitude.
So... what ROM that fully work can I use that is not bloated and let me kill network data for specific apps?
Thank you all who took the time
Hi, you should try Havok OS v3.12.
Everything works fingerprints, face unlock, navigation gestures...except VOLTE but it doesn't really matter.

I feel your pain about trying to find info on this forum. Overwhelming is a nice way to put it. It's a bloated mess.

This thread is actually my deep down heart voice! We actually get the same issues ; Perfection. Like in every ROM we undoubtedly find a bugs which made us want to change to any other better ROM. Today, i actually decided to make an account to ask some questions. Currently i'm using HadesROM but i found some bugs like the Phone Call (incoming and outgoing) are does not work :/
Kinda frustrated
Currently I'm focused on playing with the new Pixel 6 but my daily use device is still S8 running LineagOS with root access.
I haven't messed around with other ROMS much on the S8 so am not a good resource however I've been reluctant to go past LOS 17.1 because of the monthly OTA updates. So convenient I didn't bother to update or change anything...
Oh and I don't run Gapps at all either.

Send me link to the lineage os 17.1 you are using. I am using Samsung S8 g950f tired of the whole mess on 1ui
lineage-17.1-20200415-UNOFFICIAL-dreamlte.zip
and
Magisk-v23.0.apk
Should be plenty of links to these. The exact versions I started from. You can probably start from something newer.
The Safety Patch level of havok os v3.12 is 05.12.2020. Isn't that very dangerous?
