Xiaomi Mi A1 flashing stock - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

Hi there! I'm having issues to update OTA, this is my scenario:
Phone came with Android 8.0.0 Oreo (OPR1.170623.026.V9.5.9.0.ODHMIFA) so I did the following
1. Installed TRWP, then Magisk.
2. Installed Xposed (systemless) (Magisk Module)
3. Profit.
All good till here, the problem came when I tried to do the May OTA, it gives me the "Installation Problem" in the first step. I have read over the forum but I cant decide what to do. First I tried the " Uninstall -> Restore Image" in Magisk, but FAILED, and then:
1. Uninstalled Xposed Module.
2. Via TRWP uninstalled Magisk.
3. Update Failed.
Root Check says I'm rootless
Xposed Installer says "Xposed Framework is not installed". But OTA still fails.
So by now I'm thinking that maybe I have to flash stock system image, but not sure about this, actually NOT SURE WHAT TO DO, I just want to be able to have root and Xposed systemless, and then when an OTA arrives uninstall everything, do the update, reinstall Root/Xposed, and be happy.
Any guidance for me? Will I be OK if I flash JUST and ONLY the system image (OPR1.170623.026.V9.5.9.0.ODHMIFA)? Or do I have to flash ALL the stock images? What are the best option for me right now? Basically I'm trying to avoid reinstall all the apps and customization already done.
TL,DR:
Installed root/Xposed.
Uninstalled following different options.
Tried to do OTA, failed.
Not sure what to do now, I want to do OTAs and have root/Xposed.
Thinking into flash stock system image.
Thanks in advance!

But why some people can do the OTAs without uninstalling TWRP? Anyways I'll try this. Thanks. :good:

I am rooted, but not happy with my current state

Hey everyone,
I`m running LineageOS on my phone and am rooted using SuperSU which seems to work, according to Rootchecker and the feww apps I use, which make use of root privileges.
But I`m not entirely happy with my current situation, since it seems that more and more apps don`t tend to work with my rooted phone. So what are my ways out of this?
Can I easily unroot my phone, while keeping LineageOS?
Is there a working alternative to SuperSU, which would enable me to stay rooted on LineageOS without reflashing the OS and use Banking-Apps?
I`ve heard of Magisk, but I am unsure of how to switch over from my current state and I`am not sure whether or not it would solve my problems
Thanks for any help in advance!!
Magisk
You just have to go to SuperSU, then Full Unroot, then download Magisk 13.3 and flash it from TWRP. After that you should have Magisk Manager, if for some weird reason you don't, install it via apk
Then you just go to the settings, tick MagiskHide, then go back and open the side panel, MagiskHide - select the apps that you want Magisk to hide itself from
So I tried to do what you said.
I did the full unroot in the SuperSu App,
My phone rebooted
I shut it down again and booted into recovery
Tried flashing Magisk
But it failed, apparently due to my Boot image being patched by another program and told me to go with stock image
What do I do now? And will I lose any data by doing so? Thank you so much for any help!
Weird, but you can simply dirty flash LineageOS (the same one that you have now, or an update, doesn't matter) and it should let you install Magisk.
I did what you said and installed a delta update using LineageOS Downloader. Had to manually flash it in TWRP since I had no root permissions anymore. But I was able to install Magisk like a charm! Now I have to questions:
1. How do I update Magisk? Using the app?
2. Do I have to flash it again everytime I'm updating LOS?
Thanks for the great help so far!
And what exactly are those moduls? Should I be messing with them?
If updates come they will appear on the status bar and you can download them, and they'll install with the phone on. after that you have to (not quick) reboot your phone.
and about the modules, seriously? what do you think??

"Installation Failed" MI A1 OTA UPDATE

Ok, why the f. did I get "installation failed" when installing OTA following this guide?
I followed the guide, I hit uninstall and "restore images" in magisk, it restored the stock image and when I tried running feb ota, I got "installation failed", why?
Also, why did my device get in a bootloop by just fully uninstalling magisk?
I had unlocked bootloader with systemless root, with no TWRP, never booted it, never flashed it, only fastboot commands I ran were oem unlock and boot patched_boot.img. I never touched system partition (on purpose), never installed anything other than a bunch of magisk modules, safetynet was always working, if it matters.
PSA FOR GOOGLE VISITORS:
Do not fully uninstall magisk after you get "installation failed", I got a bootloop and had to flash flash_all_except_storage.bat from mi a1 stock rom using miFlash (bottom right to select it, don't flash_all if you want your data).
Same thing happened with me... what exactly i done was...booted into patched boot.img using fastboot and after that used magisk manager and installed camera2api and just substratum.....but when i got notification of feb update... I tried to uninstall magisk manager using complete uninstall option....then restarted manually then it booted up and then suddenly shuts down and started showing a black screen with Android logo with (No command) written below it......to recover from this condition i again tried to use the same fastboot method for booting into patched boot... after which i was able to use my mobile.... normally but I'm not able to install feb update.... I'm downloading the complete stock rom.....but if there's any other method which can be efficient so plz inform....

Just like he said, yeah using Magisk means waving bye to OTA updates. This was the exact problem I faced where I installed Magisk module without TWRP for the joys of using substratum. Installating magisk won't taper your system, they said, you would still get the update, they said. Well NEWS FLASH for those, installing magisk tampers your system partitions and you are in a dreadlock situation where you can't do ****. People claim there are work arounds like you linked but no one has actually confirmed using it. And the worst part is that if you try to install the update even after uninstalling Magisk , it will still give you the error. How do I know? tried it, doesn't work. The only option which was left to me was to download the official Oreo ROM from MiUI global and flash it using MiFlash.
Flashing the boot.img from stock rom might solve the problem. If not, flash the stock rom using MiFlash with save user data option.

Does the 'save user data'-option also preserve the apps installed?
Thanks!

Yes it saves all user data including settings, apps and app data
I had the same issue. I used the tool linked below and the steps:
- Unlock Bootloader
- Flash Stock ROM
- Download ROM (and wait for that to happen)
- Keep UserData (and wait again)
- Lock Bootloader
After that I was able to install the update, then re-install Magisk and camera tweaks.

The guide mention in OP had worked for me for at least 3 updates including the major one from nougat to oreo with any issue. Be aware that mounting system partition as read AND WRITE brakes OTA. You don't even need to change anything just mounting it will brake it. That could easily happen using a root file explorer or a hosts file based add blocker if Magisk is not properly set (systemless hosts support toggle in Magisk settings).

So i just got the phone three days ago but maybe try rebooting your phone to TWRP or if you don't have it installed on your recovery go to a computer and launch ADB, what you want to do is temp boot into TWRP then sideload Magisk again.
To make things easier:
=============================
1. Boot into TWRP (Either through recovery or ADB)
2. Get your yourself the stock boot.img to clear things up on Magisk's end.
3. Sideload your Magisk zip.
4. Clear cache and dalvik cache
5. Reboot the phone.
If you don't flash a stock.img of the current OOS you are on safetynet may fail but reinstalling Magisk through TWRP should fix your safetynet issue. As far as WIFI goes try flashing the modem.img file for your current OOS version, this might do the trick but i am not so sure as this is my first time using a oneplus device.
Hope i have helped you out. Don't take OTAs, they break root as an OTA is just for stock OOS with no root so there is no support for rooted devices when it comes to these updates.
Edit: Try this if it doesn't work https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/how-to/9-0-7-patched-magisk-boot-img-t3875498

I uninstalled magisk, did the regular OTA update, do not reboot, then install Magisk again on the inactive slot.
Ok fixed the problem I was having.. I had to do a complete factory wipe after installing Magisk. It's now working and I am using Oneplus Switch to restore my data backup now.

Help with installing Magisk on Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900V

I have read many threads and lots of videos and cannot seem to get the Magisk installed.
I have flashed back to stock many times with (N900VVRUEOF1_N900VVZWEOF1_N900VVRUEOF1_HOME.tar.md5) in order to try multiple methods.
Rooted with Arabictoolapp - used rootchecker to verify/application also says true for root
followed: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...guide-ob6-of1-root-bootloader-unlock-t3439010
installed SU from playstore to unlock bootloader using the adp method - shows developer mode to verify - using eMMc to verify CID starts with 15
followed: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...l/official-note-3-verizon-bootloader-t3359370
installed twrp using official twrp app & also tried ODIN in another trial (picked verizon americas and got twrp-3.2.3-0-hlte.img.tar and twrp-3.2.3-0-hlte.img )
turned phone off and boot into recovery to verify; at this time i created a recovery
using MagiskManager i downloaded the zip (Magisk-v18.1.ip) and flashed using twrp - no errors but when i restart the phone it says Magisk not installed
next attempt was to extract the boot.img from the stock OF1 and then flash the Magisk - no errors but when i restarted the phone it says the same thing - Magisk not installed
another attempt was to patch the boot.img and got a patch_boot.img then using TWRP i flashed the patch_boot.img - restarted and magisk not installed
after further digging, i tried another method which was to unroot using SU, reboot, go into recovery to then install Magisk - magisk not installed
*note each attempt to install Magisk unrooted my phone
*was able to use Magisk-uninstaller-20190204.zip to uninstall Magisk manager from recovery - icon went away
anyways i am completely stuck now. any suggestions or comments on my approach?

Did you uninstall SU before trying to install magisk. The two together may cause conflict.

Try twrp 2.8.7 hltevzw. You are using the stock ROM which is android 5. Twrp 3.1 and higher is for android 7 and up. I missed that the first time I read your post.

Yes. Are you installing Magisk .zip in twrp and installing Magisk Manager APK after normal reboot?

what do you mean after normal reboot? so flash magisk in twrp. reboot. reboot again then install magisk manager? do you know what version of magisk i should run and where i can find the dl link?
What he means is you install the Magisk ZIP via TWRP in Recovery mode, reboot the phone, then you install Magisk Manager via the APK.
Go to magiskmanager dot com website which has the ZIP installer plus the APK for the Manager.
I only just recently tried to tackle this challenge. I also installed 0F1 with Odin, then rooted with Arabic. I was messing with Pokemon go and it wasn't happy I was rooted. I downloaded magisk manager, installed it that way. At reboot, angry message from Verizon that I have custom software and phone won't boot. I assume this is because I didn't install custom recovery.
If you figure a way to get this done, I will be grateful. One thing I don't quite follow. Magisk is a root method...so should we really be rooting the phone prior? Seems redundant and going against the whole point of magisk. Right?
I wanted to play around with spoofing GPS with PGO which requires making a GPS spoofer a system app (need root for that). Is that still possible using magisk?
I'll post any updates I have as well.

Lost root access and can't get it back via Magisk. Help!

Galaxy S8 Exynos [SM-G950FD] Android Oreo 8.0.0
Hello. it's my first time posting here. So I've had a successful attempt at flashing TWRP and Magisk into my phone. Today I accidentally plugged in my charger while it was in the process of rebooting, so it entered my device into kind of a bootloop. I solved this by going into Download Mode and pressing 'Cancel', which prompted my device to successfully reboot and work again.
The problem is that I've somehow lost my root. None of my apps can get root access, CPU-Z says no root available, and Magisk Manager said "Magisk is not installed". Idk how I got to this because yesterday all was working, I assume it's because I got a bootloop or went into Download Mode.
I tried to install the official Magisk ZIP file from the Manager, go into recovery mode, and flash it via TWRP. Unfortunately this didn't work. This is the only solution I can come up with besides reflashing Stock and having to flash Magisk again and wipe all my current data. If anyone has any suggestions please comment down below as I'm kinda stuck rn. They would be greatly appreaciated!

Thanks. I tried the methods listed in the "Lost root randomly" section and unfortunately they didnt work. Do you have any other ideas? Maybe I could "Select and Patch a File" in Magisk's Install but afaik Magisk doesnt have its img./tar. file.
I should probably just flash a fresh stock and redo the root process, but then my data will be wiped and I dont really want that lol

Have you tried the uninstaller through magisk or twrp then try again with magisk.
When trying to re-install magisk do you get any errors.
https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases
Also if worried about losing apps/data do a backup before trying anything.
The easiest way is to flash firmware and start from scratch again but backup first.
