Is it really noticable on a phone? I mean.... Would I see much difference in a 4k phone panel compared to a full HD+ panel?
Also, how much more battery would it drain and how about the games I play? Will there frame rate take a hit because of the resolution?

I work on a 1440p monitor even though I shoot everything in 4k. I will def. upgrade to a 4k monitor in the future. To see the full potential of your footage it's really necessary I think. But while editing, why do you need 4k if you create low res media/proxy of your footage anyway?

Thanks for your opinion, but what I meant was how's been the previous xz premium phones for regular day usage. Example, playing games, watching Netflix, YouTube or just even browsing the web.
Of course if you want to make professional videos, you won't do them on a phone.
4k display especially the battery impact(how is it)?

I began to hear in reviews that it is not 4k all the time, just like in the Z5 premium and the XZ premium.
In that configuration those phones had good battery.

I received my XZ2P last week. The display is not 4k all the time, but that's not necessarilly a bad thing. It still looks great even in 1K. It goes into 4k mode when 4k content is being played.

It definitely does in the YouTube app. In YouTube, if the material is 4k, you can switch between 1k and 4k and definitely see the difference in clarity and detail. 4k HDR material looks as good as it does on my 4k HDR TV! I haven't tried the other apps you mentioned yet, but I have a feeling that 4k may only work with 4k video sources and not stills. Not sure though.

After further study, I am convinced that stills are showing up in 4K also.
One thing I will tell you, is that once you see some professional 4K HDR video on this screen, you can't unsee it. It just looks spectacular! As a person soon to enter my 6th decade, it seems impossible that I can carry this in my pocket.
You can force 4K using CMD on Windows with "wm size XresolutionxXresolution" (use lowercase X between the numbers not*or×)
Anyway issue is after doing 4K the digitiser scales down as it's still 1080p so you loose functionality of 75% of the screen if anyone knows the proper wm command to enter on Fastboot to restore the digitiser across the screen please add it here, I'm experiencing said scaling issue on official Android 10 build,
Unsure if there's other builds which fix this, but I don't know enough about those builds to risk loosing the noise canceling, X-Reality, AUBE camera fusion & other functionality as I understand usually happens with an unlocked bootloader
I use mine with one of those VR glasses, it certainly makes a huge difference compared to the other screens, I use it to watch 4k movies.

I also got gifted with one of those VR housings, but my question is how did you get the digitiser to work in forced 4K, after I do the CMD Shell stuff to n force 4K 'cause by default it isn't full 4K my touch inputs only work on a ¼ scale of the the screen, advice would be appreciated for the XZ2 Premium

MIne is a very cheap and basic Google cardboard VRG Pro, I use the VRTV Free app to watch movies, all the control were done by head movement on screen. I use the shinecon V4 QR code instead of the VGR Pro QR code to set up the viewer in the Google cardboard app, it gave me a better screen size control.
Without doing anything, I did a comparesion of a same movie on 1080P and 2160P, the difference was obvious.

Was this done with the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium.? My issue is for native 4K output I have to run shell commands as a developer with the phone connected to my PC for debugging. So I've been able to verify that by default without developer mods that the upscaled Google Cardboard 1080p has better sub pixel resolution on my phone then my brother's S21 Ultra but the rendered image is lower resolution because Cardboard doesn't take advantage of my 4K display,
But like I said I can plug my phone to PC, run the force 4K command unplug and have my phone running everything in 4K all the time & not just limited n list of apps like YouTube or gallery, so the issue is that when using the phone for other apps, which do now render in 4K with the command, the issue then becomes only the top-left corner of the digitiser registers touches, meaning it makes the interface unusable, so I end up having to reset to standard 1080p upscaled mode with select times where 4K actually kicks in, unfortunately it won't work for VR or most apps, how do I get around making the digitiser work all over while in forced 4K command so I don't have to default to the upscaled 1080p experience

yes, I use the Xperia XZ2 Premium, that'swhy I am on this forum.
Sorry I don't do any of the complicated stuff you were doing, I don't even know what they are, all I did was purchase the phone, purchase the VR cardboard glasss, install cardboard app and VRTV Free app, download and setup viewer QR code, watch the movies.
I did run a comparesion of a 1080p movie on a non 4k phone (with 400ppi) with the same VR glass, it was unwatchable.

I think I understand, one of two things is happening 1-& I hope this is true) the VRTV app might be actually defaulting to a 4K presentation or-2) the sup pixel rendering on the XZ2P might simply be superior at VR regardless of resolution, since in my experience even though the Galaxy S21 Ultra renders higher resolution the screen door effect is notably worse, not to mention it ghosts like a MoFo, maybe I'll try to download your same app, I don't know about the QR stuff but will attempt to replicate your experience to understand how the app is utilizing the 4K display because most apps are rendered at ¼ scale, thanks, where can I get the QR you are using

first install the google cardboard app, then the VRTV Free app, after that, open the google cardboard app, in here setup the viewer by scanning the QR code.
I chose the Shinecon V4 for better size control, depends on what brand your VR glass is, they normally include the code either on the instruction manual, or on their website, or you can google the code base on your VR model.

4k recording is on lte not in 3g.is it true?
if 3g version dosnot have 4k recording then ..there will b patch to record 4k records?let me know
Snap Processor - LTE & 4K recording
Octa Processor - More Ram & 4 Cores but no LTE or 4k
It boils down to processors not 3g
Nope, there will never be any patch. Hardware limitation.
BTW, do you have a 4K TV or a monitor? If not, I find it hard to understand why would you need a 4K. If you have a 4K display, then it makes sense for you.

May be he has. May be does not. Who cares? Let technology spread out. Otherwise we would have stuck with 3GP and low bitrate MP4s.
I totally agree 4k content atm really rare but so did 1080p. Did people sat idle and stuck with 3GP recording in the fear that OMG! 1080p is so huge!!!!!!! I would not buy a 64 GB card for that.
4k is a nice addition. And to your other point-before 1080p displays came out all the 720p display like S3 were able to shoot and playback 1080p. Did anyone question why 1080p on a 720p native display? No.
I have seen two 4k samples and yes I am excited. Specially from the phonearena sample the moving tree leaves looked outstandingly crisp. And if I am the one out of 10 million people who cares about 4k it wont stuck with me forever. With more devices gonna have 4k native [already started to] display and storage like 128 GB 4k will become regular thing. And to be regular stuff like 1080ps or 720ps initiatives like this will naturally occur.
People just cannot keep other people discouraged from a nice tech evolution. If they would succeed people would never move beyond 2 GB memory card and low bitrate 3GP or .rmv video contents and shoot straight out the people who consume ogg music files.

4k video was just a gimmick I feel. If you dont have device to play 4k content like pc or Tv, there is no point of 4k. Its good that Asians won't get it

Costco had a 4k TV playing the same movie as a 1080p TV and I could genuinely tell the difference. But unfortunately my wallet is a bit too small to early adopt the 4k TV's right now
I'm as much for future-proofing as anyone else here. But where is 4K content coming from and how's it being delivered? Content upscaled to 4K (EG: HD TV/Movies originally captured in 720/1080P) aren't going to look any better than they would on a 720P/1080P TV or monitor. They’ll most likely look worse. 4K content is huge. All the ISPs are already *****ing about what video's doing to their networks. How long did it take for Blu-Ray to become a standard? And the only Blu-Ray that looked good was what was natively captured in HD not the upscaled crap like 50's I love Lucy episodes. So for 4K to become meaningful content producers need to start capturing in it. That 'aint gonna be happening fast as the only ones that benefit from 4K as it stands are the TV manufacturers and they aren't significant enough in the food chain to drive standards forward. So we'll probably all be on the Note 4 (and more likely the N5) when UHD (4K) gains any real traction. Because traction requires native content.
So would I want 4K in the N3? Sure, who wouldn't want extra "cool" stuff for the same price. Would I ever use it to record anything? No, the files are huge and would have to be downscaled to my 1080P TVs, monitors, and devices making natively captured 1080P look better anyway. Am I going to run out and buy 4K playback devices? Absolutely. As soon as at least 1/3 of the content I playback is available in UHD.
An interesting article...

Wow 4k looks really nice. Phonearena posted the sample 4k video but it was useless because youtube converts it to 1080p. The native 1080p video that they posted looked better than 4k on youtube. I can't wait to use 4k. It might not be every time I go to record something but if I love being able to have that option.

It amazes me how short-sighted some people are to say stuff like that. You and Clariion, 2 posts above you, as well as many other people in different threads...Videos, recorded with your phone's camcorder are memories for life. Do you record something only to watch it right away and be done with, never watch it again? 20 years ago, when there was only VHS available - if someone offered you a device, which can record video in DVD quality, would you say "no" to that, because your current TV can only play VHS resolution?...
You're saying "I don't want to record much better quality video just because right now I don't have a TV, that can play it." . In a few years 4k TVs will be a standard in every house, and you'll be watching your wedding's video in sh*itty 1080p, because you chose not to get 4k camcorder just because you didnt have a playback device for it at the time...
I can't believe some of you don't see the benefits of 4k even if you plan on never getting a 4k TV. While recording in 4k, just your ability to digitally zoom while maintaining excellent quality should be worth the feature being present. It's basically lossless digital zoom (up to a point of course.) I can't imagine anyone not wanting that.
Why is it that no one has reported that the 4k resolution on the Z5 premium is only 4k when playing or filming 4k video. At all other times i.e 99% of the time, the device has normal resolution. I think its misleading by Sony regarding the way they have advertised the product. If I buy a 4k phone as Sony has described the Z5 premium, I am more interested in my home screen, normal apps and text messages etc being 4k resolution rather that the ability to film 4k video. Its not that I need such resolution for these but merely the principle.
So you'd rather have a battery that will last you for half the day? Because there's no way around it that the Premium is the first 4K phone, and Sony really played it smart where it won't be a flop by adding smart software that enables 4K when it's needed.
No I'd rather Sony did not push the Z5 as a 4k phone when it isn't. I would have bought it for the screen size alone. The BS about it being a native 4k screen is poor customer service. If battery will be an issue they should have put a bigger battery in. it's thick enough.
What I am also puzzled about are all these journalists with their previews and hands on reviews stating how the screen is great or that they can't tell the difference from a normal phone. Did these chumps not know that's because it isn't a 4k screen most of the time.
They did put 4k resolution hardware they just did not used due to fact that it is little difference or make no difference on 2k. Their might be possible to to change resolution if you root and develop ui.

That's really no different than a 4k TV.
Unless you're watching specific 4k content on your TV, you are looking at 1080p/720p resolution. User interfaces on 4k TVs generally aren't 4k because there is no point. That dosen't make the screen NOT 4k, or the Z5P's screen NOT 4k. It's just that you have to be watching 4k content to actually see it at the proper resolution. That's how all 4k devices are, and they are all advertised as 4k, and rightfully so.
I mean I don't know what you expect... you want the browser/texting to be 4k? What's the point of UHD aside from watching videos? None of the websites you visit will be in 4k aside from when you're watching videos. Sony did the right thing here in utilizing the 4k screen for videos/pictures. There would be no point in having a 4k home screen since it would just drain a ton of battery
Are the journalists reading this site or is it a coincidence that articles about the lack of 4k on the Z5 premium now start to roll out a few days after my post. Am surprised this was not reported on day 1.
interesting

Your point is absolutely no-point. The phone is 4K phone because it has native 4K display. That the UI (applications etc.) are not native 4K is just because there is absolutely no point rendering user interface at 4K. The point is that th phone is capable of natively displaying 4K content. User Interface is not 4K content and there is a good reason behind it.

My point is that 4k TV/video is not here yet. There is no content. So the 4k video feature is pointless. I don't give a monkeys about the ability to record or view 4k video.
However what a 4k screen provides is better overall picture quality. Whilst the improved ppi will not be noticeable, 4k produces better colours and brightness. This is the feature of the 4k screen that I would be interested in. At the end of the day the Z5 premium is no better than my current Z3. It definitely looks uglier than the Z3.
Funny thing is, Nobody ever complained when their phone's CPU are running on 600mhz on idle when the spec sheet is 2.3Ghz. smh

Seems you don't get my /s implicitly there.. :/ the 4K situation looks a lot like CPU speed. It can be pushed to max but it doesn't have to be activated all the time. But here we are, people are complaining for such reserve as a drawback.

Uhh what? There absolutely is 4k content. In fact, I'm watching Breaking Bad in 4k on Netflix as we speak. Lots of major streaming services are getting 4k content and there is more and more every day.
Are you upset that TV manufacturers are advertising TV's as 4K even though most content watched will currently be 1080p/720p? The TV UI's are generally not 4K. How is that different?
And just like TV's, Sony has claimed that the phone will upscale 1080p content, so it should produce better color and brightness, although who knows how noticeable it will be w/ such a small screen?
We always can see whether the panel is 4K by playing a 4K video from youtube. Like it should give the option to switch between the qualities, Am I not right?

Read this, son. It will play 4K and will UPSCALE image/video content to 4K, along with the other image/video enhancements. That's the focus of the phone, a "premium" viewing experience. The UI will remain 1080p to preserve battery life, because who the hell cares about the image quality of the freakin' UI? Same goes for apps and games, unless (maybe) the game actually comes with 4K resolution, which I doubt there are for now when consoles still struggle with 1080p.
It indeed 4K panel. only uses for Media and stuff.

I'm fairly sure the answer is no. I've just upgraded to a large 1440p monitor for both my PC and the Shield to use in my small room at university. The Windows PC is obviously perfectly happy to output at any resolution I want, and even prompts me if I use anything other than the display's native resolution. The Shield on the other hand has extremely few settings in every department, including HDMI. I get that Google is trying to simplify their various software for the average user but come on, no option to set the output resolution? Ridiculous. Under Settings, HDMI I've set 'HDMI optimisation' to 'best resolution' mode (that's the only relevant setting I can find). I've then restarted and it still appears that the Shield is outputting 1080p and letting my monitor scale it up (crudely). I'm not only going by my judgement of the image quality. When I take a screenshot it saves as 1080p.
Presumably people with 4K displays aren't experiencing such a problem? The device is, after all, supposed to be 4K60 capable.
I haven't tried any custom ROMs (nor do any current ROMs offer a 10-foot UI as far as I'm aware), I wonder if it would help though?
Nor have I looked into using the Xposed framework (which I've only ever read about and never properly used), though I'm doubtful whether that could help.
My problem isn't with 1080p HD itself. As far as video is concerned I can't even tell much difference between 720p and 1080p at a normal movie viewing distance. It's when any GUI renders at non-native resolution that it becomes really obvious and annoying to me.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nomone.resolution_changer&hl=en
Maybe try this? It's for dropping res to increase performance, but I don't see why it can't increase it too.
This app may also work. It also allows for overscan adjust if you would need that on any other display.

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay, I've been moving house.
I got a copy of the .apk for Screen Shift from the developer on that thread and Sideloaded it and used it to change the resolution to 1440p. The result it interesting. Everything on the screen shrinks (presumably in proportion to the increase in resolution).
This proves that the hardware can physically output in 1440p, which is to be expected considering that it is 4K capable. However another reasonable assumption was that the software would be optimised for smoothly coping with 1440p, and it isn't. This is quite disappointing considering that it is a 4K-capable gaming device and that 1440p is a popular choice among gamers in particular.
Curiously I was unable to take a screenshot of what I am describing. I'll attach a photo instead.

so you got thta working somewhat at least. Is everything stretched? It looks fine to me from the picture, but those can only show so much. Unfortunately, the 21:9 market is really a niche, not to say that I don't understand how amazing that they are, I intend to own one someday. Unfortunately for us and Nvidia, Android TV, and ANdroid in general is made to work well with 16:9 ratios as that's what almost every TV, monitor, and phone are these days, or really dang close. On top of that, this is a media box, which you could argue both ways that 21:9 is very nice for ultra-wide movies and also not usefol to many as most if not all blu-ray is 16:9 for most media formats, and games aren't likely optimized for a small niche. It makes sense that they wouldn't add support at this time, and I want support as I would buy a 1440p monitor if they would add support, but it'd be more work for each app, though mostly games, to support an odd ratio, and on top of that, even shield specific games are pretty niche, and then to add a niche feature to a niche product, just isn't monitairly worth the time. Sorry to make this so long, but I wanted to explain the best my tired brain could.
TLDR: It's not worth it for them, but DANG it would be nice. Till then, we have to hope that a monitor will black bar it to 16:9 for us, or that hack to work.

1440p is 16:9, so the 1080p image scales up without needing to be stretched or cropped.
Interestingly with firmware upgrade v2.0 they've added a few more HDMI settings, including one to change the resolution and refresh rate. Unfortunately, despite being connected to a 1440p monitor, the only available options are all 1080p (as shown in the attached screenshot).

Wow, I'm totally not on the ball. Mixing up 1440p with 21:9, sorry about that. It looks like Screen shift did what you needed though. It'd be nice to see that added, but for now, workarounds are there at least.
Hi, im just wondering if the OP ever managed to get his Shield to output 1440p?
Ive been watching some UHD / 2K video trailers on youtube using my PC and i've been blown away by the quality, in particular the "Samsung UHD - Transformers Age Of Extinction (2014)" video ( incase someone wants to check it out).
Ive just upgraded to a Curved 1440p display so I now have a spare 1440p monitor that I would love to use with my Shield TV and finally replace my old plasma tv Ive been using for years. After seeing the quality I can get playing a 2K 60fps video on the display it would be great if I could use my shield tv to play UHD content @ 1440p as the hardware is clearly capable.. I'm just hoping there is a work around to enable it. Even if I need to root my Shield / Install a custom ROM. I've googled and hit a brick wall..
Anyone have any solutions to displaying 1440p @ 60hz on the Shield? (fingers crossed)
Thanks
[Solved] Yes! you can 1440p (2560x1440 @60Hz) with the nvidia shield. just:
1) Enable developer options (search for tutorial ,easy)
2) Go to: Developer Options > HDMI section > Show all supported modes in custom display modes> enable.
3) Settings > Devices Preferences >Display & Sound > Resolution > Select to match the resolution of your monitor.
While you are there, may be you want to force Advanced Display Settings > Dynamic Range to Full to match the full RGB input of your monitor. Mine a Monoprice IPS27 shows washed out colors by default with Nvidia Shield, switching to full RGB solves the issue
Have a good day!
i was SO frustrated looking at similar threads here and around the web so i got in touch with CMOAR virtual cinema and asked them if its rendering 4k or just upscaling from 1080p.
It seems like it's just upscaled BUT since in the past they talked about the chance to have it run at TRUE 4k...they answered me and said:
we have prepared special build with 4k support (Rendering in 4k), fps are of course low but I think we will prepare build for public, because we know that many people just like us want to test it
Please send us a reminder at the end of the month
So get ready. We will FINALLY be able to see TRUE 4k. Maybe at 15fps..but that will be the best chance we had so far..in VR. I think there could be the chance to play a movie in the void theater at good fps.
but the main question i have left is...why didn't you do the same months ago?! I would have done it instantly if i had the phone!

if im not mistaken you posted this and showed that 1080p or 4k things got smaller but readability was exactly the same (reading the smallest line). Am i wrong? In that case, that's not true 4k
other than that i couldn't find in this whole forum a true list of true 4k applications. It's like looking for gold!!

Don't know what you're referring to. If you look at the resolution, it is 4k. When you watch a movie in VR, your virtual void screen is not going to be 4k, it's going to be far less. When my phone is in 4k, the virtual screen resolution is a couple hundred pixels bigger than when at 2k or 1080p.
If it renders in 4k, it's not really going to matter because you're not getting anywhere close to that in void cinema anyways? You're getting about VGA worth of a virtual screen. I think the most important factor with 4k for VR is less screen door effect, not the resolution? Then again, I just started messing with this so I'm not too knowledgeable.
i don't think it works like that..
in virtual cinema now you just have a 1080p resolution upscaled to 4k. SDE has nothing to do with the output resolution and it's going to be the same even outputting at 480p the whole screen.
Even so, putting true 4k in virtual cinema will mean having twice the detail there is now since every pixel will have a "true" color instead of a fake one (with upscaling). That will result in a greater resolution overall.
The only way to really test this out, is with their true 4k output cinema version. Now we're 95% just fooled with upscaling (and as they said 4k will have very low fps)

If I'm not running AAA VR Cinema in 4K, then can you explain why my virtual cinema has a greater resolution then when running the phone at 2k or 1080p? Are you really going to notice that much more detail if you cram a 4k video into a VGA space or a 1080p one into that same space?
i guess the only way to find out would be 3 screenshots, one at each resolution from a 1080p source clip. 4k is twice as sharp as 1080p, for the same portion of screen. That means that something barely readable 1080p will be twice as sharp in 4k. The void size must be the same and 4k would actually display 2x times a 1080p image, not just 200px more
look, you posted these:
https://postimg.cc/image/nrqysn3y3/
https://postimg.cc/image/z5di3uegr/
the second is slightly higher resolution but the output is the same, resizing back the 4k to 1440p you have the same exact image...that's 100% upscaled, no true 4k happening at all, you would see a big difference going up (1440p is nowhere close 4k, it's jus 125% more than 1080p where 4k is 200% 1080p)

Dude, the function of that app is only to tell you the resolution of the virtual screen. What's within it is for reference purposes. It's not going to change.
reminder
I'm creating a bounty for enabling native 2K or preferably 4K.
The resolution/dpi emulation still does nothing more than resize the xxhdpi resources (not even the xxxhdpi), so it still isn't as good quality as 2K displays on other phones.
Moreover, VR (the only real purpose for a 4K phone) is terrible. True, the screen door effect is gone, but at the cost of blurry less defined images same as a 1080p phone. Only Youtube and finally Netflix are able to use the 4K but other apps and games are unable to use the higher 2K resources and downloaded VR movies are fuzzy. Completely disappointing compared to my 2K phone. Also, with the emulated 2K or 4K, Daydream becomes tiny in the bottom center of the screen.
I believe the kernel controls the screen properties, but not sure if there was something to do with it in the ROM for this phone. While I'm sure I could figure it out with all of the easy handy guides, I don't really have time to do the research on how to do it myself. So, I'm creating this bounty.
I'll start with committing $50 to the person who releases the first stable one, but still donate to a second placer
If anyone else would like to sweeten this pot please post how much you would contribute.
I think it's a problem of native 4k apps, not the phone.
You can put it in 2,4k using adb commands, search here https://forum.xda-developers.com/xz-premium/themes/mod-change-default-resolution-to-4k-root-t3618843, but you need apps for that. I have Bobo VR Z5 and it's working perfect in 4k and in 1080p, but only without screen protector.

The adb command is just emulating 4K with the lower resolution resources as said in my top post.
This is how Daydream looks in emulated 4K https://drive.google.com/open?id=1i531VadSbzzu1Or1CMMvBYez5VFi_Mkp
I'm sure without the screen door effect you may feel you're getting 4K VR, but it actually 1080p.
For example, I take 4K 360° photos. the text on distant signs is readable on my 2K phone, but not on this XZP.
Awesome! Hoping this will attract devs to look into this.

It's pretty sharp. It's better in emulated 2k/4k, but good enough for 1080p. At least for me.
Also just to add, I noticed that if you use GMD Gesture Control and calibrate the screen, you'll see that the app reads the screen as 4k. (Even when on stock wm size)

That app probably reads the pixel size rather than the set resolution. AIDA64 also reads as 4K the first time, but later shows 1080x1920 or whatever emulated size you set.
When doing the Daydream fix, it also changes the screen from LCD to AMOLED.

true that but even when on emulated 4k you get just as good display as 1080p, its still even not as crisp as other 1080p but cant tell difference, still with emulated 4k just to look at "enhanced" 1080p sucks!
plus you lose more battery than native 2k phones! i bought the phone because of its screen and I cant enjoy 4k at all times, or at least in the UI or any other app that I want in 4k....
im disappointed i really wish there is a fix to get native 4k...

Excellent, and totally agree!
Now the bounty is up to $100.
Let's get more people. We can't be the only ones disappointed that Sony sold us a 4K phone *only in 2-3 apps that is actually locked at 1080p.
Could it be possible to just make other apps 4k by heavily editing them? Like the VR apps. If doing it system wide is too difficult then maybe editing apps might be easier.
I'm curious anyway, who can actually tell the difference between 1080p and 4k on this phone? You say 1080p looks better on other phones, so does the 4k look just as sharp as that 1080p? Also, how do we know Sony isn't just using the emulated 4k when it gets enabled? Not every photo in the album is 4k so how would it enable?
I did take a 1080p photo and a 4k photo and noticed a difference but I wasn't convinced. It didn't seem like a huge difference like it does against a TV/monitor at 4k. Especially on YouTube I cannot see the difference majorly when going from 1080p to 4k but can others? If 4k is difficult to make happen then maybe we could push 120hz at 1080p since it was said that the X series of devices have 120hz displays it's just disabled for some reason. The page needs translating but it shows 1080p at 120hz as an option. This was mentioned in a previous thread but I don't think anyone was interested in it. I think that this has a higher chance since this image exists.
Thats my thoughts about 4k on this device anyway. I think at this point 120hz might be a better option but that's just my opinion. 4k is great but it's only limited at the moment.
https://gazyekichi.com/2017/07/26/画面さくさく!「xperia-xz-premium」は「120hz」に対応している/
here is the thing, true that its very hard to tell the difference between 1080p and 4k on such small screen, so I took screenshots of before and after 4k mod and placed them together on my 24 inch monitor side by side and still can barely tell the difference even on huge screen which proves that its not 4 times better quality so its really fake 4k!! only time i can realize the difference is when i zoom in on both pictures and see that some details are washed out and more "pixel" looking at 1080p while on 4k mod still manages to show more details but then again, such difference in sharpness and detail shouldnt be so hard to notice since on my monitor I can easilyyy tell a difference between 1080p and 4k gaming on my VSR (virtual supper resolution) even virtually on my screen modded 4k has a lot more difference that stock 1080p
while even modded 4k on this device can barely show a difference, so might as well change that in a native way I really cant wait for a fix
PS: running 1080p on 1080p screen looks better than running 1080p on 4K screen (if screens are same size) - proven.
so down scaling the 4K screen of this device to 1080 will make it look worse than other native 1080p screen which buggs me, the least they could have done is add an option like samsung did to just adjust the quality as you wish... I hope they add that in the next update
Yes I agree 1080p on a 4k screen does look worse. On most TVs it doesn't but on my Acer predator 28" 4k monitor it is very noticeable that 1080p looks like 720p when duplicating the screen next to my 1080p monitor. The desktop does look noticeably blurrier. However, 1080p content on the 4k monitor doesn't show a huge difference so I'm not sure what that's about only playing games and the desktop look bad at 1080p. Maybe the XZ1 could have been a better option but even still know that I have the second 4k mobile device on the planet and the only 4k HDR device is still cool. It's certified to be 4k so it can't possibly be a fake 4k it has to be really 4k else Sony would be lying and with all those TV experts I don't think it wouldn't be possible for them to do real 4k on a smartphone.
The screen using the emulated 4k is razor sharp. By far sharper than any other phone I've used including the note 8. Are you sure your not just mistaking the overly unrealistic saturation of a amoled screen compared to a LCD one? I dont mean that in a sarcastic way, i genuinely dont see any comparison between the two. I havnt used the phone for any VR stuff though so can't comment on that

you are right but im not comparing only with samsung, also with HTC and the previous version of xperia , the Z3
yes maybe on emulated 4k it has sharper screen but keep in mind that on 1080 is not as sharp as other 1080p, even on 2k it isnt only on 4k mode it is unbeatable which to add is emulated and not native
put phone on 2k battery dies so much faster than lets say samsung or HTC which both have same CPU GPU and almost same battery size, how is that? because the resolution is emulated, which forces GPU to resize source resolution of 1080p to make it in a fake way look like 4k instead of showing native 4k (which doesnt require such hard work from GPU as its showing real pixels instead of emulating fake pixels!) Which leads to less over heating and less battery consumption.
heck even on 1080p screen looks worse and still get worse battery life than other phones...
thats what bothers

If 4k is difficult to make happen then maybe we could push 120hz at 1080p since it was said that the X series of devices have 120hz displays it's just disabled for some reason. The page needs translating but it shows 1080p at 120hz as an option. This was mentioned in a previous thread but I don't think anyone was interested in it. I think that this has a higher chance since this image exists.
Thats my thoughts about 4k on this device anyway. I think at this point 120hz might be a better option but that's just my opinion. 4k is great but it's only limited at the moment.

not exactly but some other phones have better 1080p than the 1080p on this device, yes text and symbols maybe just as sharp its hard to tell but im talking about pictures (for example, in instagram, facebook. youtube thumbnails etc...) I once was on 4k mode and it was very hard to tell the difference between this phone and the Z3 and even some times the z3 showed more picture details in instagram and its only 1080p...
im not complaining about the screen though, its pretty decent and with 4k mod on it looks superb, im just saying sony has put some thing in a device that is useless and im trying to figure out why...
by useless i mean sony left us no option to use such settings, why dont they add the options of 1080-120hz or 4k? naive and not emulated! this bugs me
and yes it is 4k, just like youtube you dont have to watch on 4k settings, but you can see the option is there which means it supports it.
that means even if you dont have a 4k video in your video app or album app, the option is there that means if you ever have a 4k video on there the device will play it at its maximum resolution.
phones that dont support 4k will show that the video looks as sharp as 1080 instead of real 4k
