Android 6.0.1 /Mobile Hotspot/Streaming Kodi/ VPN Needed? (Surely) - Moto G4 Questions & Answers

Moto G4 1625 (i think)
32GB+64SD
Unlocked/Rooted./TWRP
Love the phone as is... go it just where I want it no problems... unless I want there to be.
I use it as phone, text and piracy. No FB, Msgr, or other like apps. Some to help control background sh** but not much.
Kodi.
Using it on PC to steam to TV and everything seems to be fine other than the finding channels that work [sop]). Just started so here is my question:
Should I get a VPN -obvious- (looking at Expressvpn) and if so for android no doubt since it is LTE ISP?
Don't my donating to a good service (glad to support developers) just want to stick it to the cable, sat and ect, cos.. with their $1,000,000 "bundles".
Thanks for any/all responses.
Edit: PurePN?

Fu**-It Got ExpressVPN
Sorry to trouble everyone here with a dumb-a** question... just thought it was a good place to start a diag with those in the know.
Anyway... so far all seems to have crinkled-out (if you will) and again: Hope I paid for something that was coded here... if not... there you have it.

I love my Wiz now, but why is it so lame 'out of the box'?

I love my MDA more and more now. But after my first week or two i was begining to think i had made a mistake buying it. Thanks to the kind and helpful folk around here and other forums, i now have it doing everything i wanted it to do and in the way i want it to do it.
I use it for TomTom, playing DIXed DVD's, music, podcasts, games, the usual email/web duties and more. And thanks to the great WiFi 'G' reg hack i can now stream my large lossles FLAC files (with the help of fantasitc Conduits Pocket Player) right into my Hifi system, just like my Squeezebox 3 media player. It's actually much better than an ipod (albeit with less storage when out of the house - although i could access my music at home from a hotspot). A fully fledged media streaming device for free! (well, a small fee for Pocket Player and a 2.5mm to 3.5mm jack adaptor).
Not only does this hack also enable 'g' speeds, but i can confirm that it also massively increases performance on 'b' speed networks too (which mine is limited to due to being an 'adhok' network).
Sure, a faster proc, better camera and maybe even 3G would be nice. But i have no wish to ever make video calls or use Skype (i'm the geek of the group and no-one else i know uses it).
I understand there will always be better third party software (Media Player is an utter waste of space for example) but why should we have to make techy and annoying tweaks to the registry, just to get the best from the unit? Why the hell do we need to hack the reg just to make a basic settings change, such as hiding SIM contacts (which is an option in just about every mobile from the last 5 years).
Is it just bad planning? Poor thinking on the manufactures part? or is there just a genuine reason for 'hiding' these settings and not making them accessable from standard menu's?
The older i get, the less time i have to mess around so much. I have better things to do these days to be honest.
Surely they would have more to gain by activating the performance increases themselfs, rather than us more tech savy types to figure out how to alter the registry. Half the things this device has been slated for in reviews can actually be sorted, but the average (make that normal) buyers of this device will be feeling a bit short changed if you ask me.
I guess the only thing left for me to do now is dump the T-Mobile ROM and use a more slimline one. Or maybe i should just figure out who to lose some of the crap from my existing install?
What is it with these companies? Don't they know when they are on to a good thing? Or maybe, just maybe it to keep us coming back for more and upgrading year after year? Hey ho...
/rant over.

Very interesting topic, well put and one which I'm sure will be relevant to me very soon...y'see my Wizard arrives in two days and it was reading posts such as yours which helped me take the plunge.
I don't mind messing about with PDAs, phones, PCs etc to get the the best performance but (as you rightly point out) we shouldn't have to. However, given the thousand of threads and posts on this (incredibly good) site, I am somewhat confused about what to do first with my Wizard.
So, could you please take a few minutes to post what changes, hacks etc you have done to get yours where you (almost) want it to be?
Many thanks in advance.

The first things i would always do after a hard reset (format), after syncing back all my contacts/callender of course...
Reg hacks (main ones, i have forgot a few) -
*Hide SIM contacts (so the dont appear pointlessly twice)
*Enable 'g' speed Wifi
* Disable the annoying 'you are about to go online' message. You will understand when you get yours, VERY VERY annoying - you get it even when you are online and just switch back to PIE.
* There are some good performace tweaks to, which i forgot about.
Essential software i could not be without (some free, some not - unless you are naughty. Don't be naughty now )
*TomTom (Sat Nav)
*Memory Map Pocket Nav + GPS and the O.S. maps i use for walking
*TCPMP - The best video player
* Conduits Pocket Player - the best music player IMO (Streaming, gapless playback and OGG/FLAC support - nice). costs a few beer tokens, but free good alternatives are available.
*Resco File explorer and Reg editor.
*Opera Browser - Renders pages faster than PIE, handles java script etc better and Tabbed browsing makes GPRS speeds much less of a pain.
*Memmaid - for cleaing up temp files, dead registry entries etc.
*Storage tools - for formating and sorting out MiniSD cards - WM5 can't even format a bloody memory card!
*Wififofum - for finding WiFi networks (more for fun than anything).
*OMAPclock - for a bit of overclocking (more for fun again, i rarely feel the need is that great)
*And of course registry wizard for the good people of these forums
Thats about it really for me, but i am finding more cools things everyday to play with but those are my must have ones - i have had to install
A few must have games include, AOE, UFO, 3D pool and Soduko.
Personally i dont use a today plugin. I have not found one i like yet and most have icons etc that are to small on the MDA's small screen or just make clutter rather than really help me. A well organised start menu is enough for me.
Oh, and of course you can flash the ROM. But i have not done this yet. T-Mobiles version does not seem that bad but i hear the O2 version is a real dog and well worth doing. I just worry about lost Wifi and GPRS functionality i have heard about some people having.
Really wasn't expecting a reply so soon, and certainly not such a comprehensive one. Thanks for your time. I may be back with more questions once I actually get my mitts on a Wizard. Cheers!
yes I agree , it is great post, specially for new people like me, I got mine (Qtek 9100) just on Friday, and I am still figuring out its functions.
But I have question - if you have time to answer - I really don't know about WiFi function -which is in the device- , if I want to connect to the internet I should have a wireless router connected to my main PC, is that right ? I have read some of posts in here, that they can connect to the Internet - through their PPC - when they are outside or walking or traveling from area to another, by scanning for the nearby Connection, then they can use it to visit websites, does this cost money when they connect to the Internet using the WiFi ? And how can I do the same if it doesn't cost m money ? Can the "WiFi Fofum" program do this o is it only to scan any available connection nearby ? How can I connect to the internet (through WiFi) when this programm finds connection? And if it is really totally free..
I know this are bunch o Questions But I really want to use this function - if possible - specially that I work outside my city and I have to spend couple of hours travelling almost everyday. I appreciate any comment.
Wireless router at home if you want to use it wirelessly or if you do what I do now and then..... connect via the USB cable to your PC. Out and about you can connect for free if someone has a wireless network within range that has no WEP security enabled
There are wireless spots around the country but you have to pay for the main ones via an account you have to set up (kind of pay as you go) Cloud is one company that runs WiFi hotspots on a PAYG basis.
If you leave your WIFI scanning it will tell you if you are within range of a network, it will also tell you if it is secured or not, if it isn't then 9/10 you can just connect and use it
I have been meaning to make a post just like the OP. You are on the mark, IMO! This situation really begs the question, how can this thing be so feeble out of the box?
Thank you XDA and all of the kind people on this forum. You have been the best!

In my case, my service provider (Cingular) offers a service called GPRS/EDGE, which lets the Wizard access the Internet through the cell phone connection.
I use the WiFi when I don't have a good connection. Most of the time, for browsing mini-websites and sending e-mails, there isn't much speed difference between WiFi and GPRS. I don't think the Wizard is fast enough to process more than a few 100 kbps of data.
If you don't want to (or can't) pay for a GPRS service, it's possible to "war drive" for access points. The Wizard will find them, although its WiFi reception isn't as powerful as a laptop's.
On my phone, if I enable WiFi, the phone will automatically use WiFi instead of GPRS when WiFi is available. If you don't want to pay GPRS charges, you might want to configure the phone so that it doesn't use GPRS.
can you explain 'wardriving' please? is it just freely using wifi points without paying? bit confused
Thanks
Jamie,
You are correct in your assumption !! You would be amazed at the number of 'unlocked' WiFi routers out there....
Ever tried running Bluetooth detection in a pub and seen how many phones are out there too ?
If you can find an unlocked WiFi router running DHCP - 'Fill your boots' !! Sometimes it's even possible to guess IP addresses of other PC's on the network, access em and leave a kindly note to thank them for their hospitality but warn them of their folly and the potential for disaster......I know I have but then that's me: Mr Altruism
Ok how can I get any internet connection through WiFi ? Should I just enable my WiFi and it'll scan for any available connection nearby ? I did but nothing happened, it wants from me to fill form which I really don't know anything about it... Or do I have to use a program to scan for connection ? And if yes, should my WiFi be enabled ? What is the best program for scaning ? I wish if someone explains me all that and how can start using WiFi to get a connection and an access to the internet but slowly, will be thankful.
Im new to all of this, but what can you do with the registry wizard and how do you install it? I foud a zip file for it, but cant get it to load.
Thanks!
i have a question too if you have the time mate,
I don't exactly want to use the edge since i dont have an unlimited plan or something.how can i delete these settings and do you think any problems will occur?(sending recieving mms)
basicly i don't it to connect to edge(gprs)auto.is there a way to fix this
thanks so much.

Modding my Cingular 8125 q and a

Well, i have scoured the site, and tried and tried and tried to no avail, I just cannot seem to figure out this puzzle!
Actually it is a multi-layered puzzle...
I, of course have a Cingular 8125. Thus far I have unlocked the sim lock, unlocked the CID lock, enabled wireless G mode, and installed some programs.
These are the programs that I am using.
I have Resco File Manager (full)
Resco Registry (full)
TCMPMP
HTC Streaming Media
Opera (full)
What I am interested in doing is this. I would like to be able to view streaming video (imagine that). So far I cannot. HTC streaming media installed well enough, but when I click on the icon it says that some of the components are missing, or it's not signed by a trusted certificate...
When ever I go to You Tube (Regular), it says that I either have Java turned off, or do not have the latest Flash Player...
Oh I forgot to mention I also have Adobe Flash 7 mobile installed...
When I go to m.youtube.com, and I click on a vid a progress bar shows up and progresses, but nothing else.
I really don't want to mess around with installing roms, as i would rather know how to do it on my own. I am no stranger to reg hacks, seem edits, and basic hex as I already hang out mostly on moto modding sites.
If i do need to install a rom, that is fine I suppose as long as I have the ability to back up my current one (always backup before you f-up).
I also have a question or two about WM6. But will leave it at what I already have inquired.
Thanks in advance for all the help! I am confident that I will get good answers as the expertise on this forum seems to be quite high!
Im right there with you buddy... I did all the things you did and still no luck... This phone seems to be hopeless.... Not working like all the others with the installed software... Hope somone can help...
well, i'll tell ya, I figured it out all by my lonesome...
What was needed is a drivers pack, and I will be more then happy to give you the link that will take you to it...
What you need to do is located right here at this link
http://www.mediafire.com/?5pjefxzvzj0
Basically what you need to do with it, is unzip and then copy/cut and paste the .dll files into the windows folder of your pocket pc.
if it asks you if you want to replace files then just skip over that file and go to the next.
Now the only site that I have found that seems to be usefull is of course, m.youtube.com
If you happen to find anything else that works please let me know as youtube seems to be the only site that out fit themselves to stream media to PPC or iPhone.
...Oh and by the way this only works if you are using ie mobile. for some reason it doesn't work with opera. I don't know why.
But it does look good however. All things considered, it looks pretty good.
Let me know how you made out!
Thanks for the help... IT loads now but every time i connect it says "failed to connect to network"... Do you get that?
yes i did, and i will be more then happy to help you out just as soon as I can turn my stupid phone on...
See, I just got a car charger with another phone (one of those stupid ebay "included free" car chargers). And I just got a new car where I could actually have a use for it. So I plugged in my wizard/cingular 8125 into it the other day assuming that I would charge it all nice like as long as I left it in the car...
Nay, the charger apparently does not work and now I have to leave the wiz on my usb charge till God only knows when (If you have never let one of these drain to absolute DEAD, don't it takes forever to get it back again...)
So... yes I did get that message, and yes I did figure out how to get it to work, but no i don't remember how I did it...
So I will get back to ya soon!
i think you have to have Windows Mobile 6 to stream media... i dont think the streaming media player works with windows mobile 5. I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure.
I stream youtube and all kinds of stuff on my old 8125... MobiTV, XMRadio etc.
okay here's the deal...
No phone can stream regular internet (even the iphone in all it's glory can't do it). The reason being has something to do with the type of stream that is being streamed...
Hence why youtube.com created m.youtube.com...
It has to be mobile, and someone told me the format not too long ago, but I forget what it is.
You can stream it on Windows mobile 5 using HTC streaming Media player. No mods, no hacks, no ROMS. Straight up, out of the box.
But again, the key is finding a site that is set up to stream it on a mobile phone... Which in another reason most sites offer podcasts. It's a cheap alternative...
Never the less it's only a matter of time before cnn.com foxnews.com etc all follow suite and say hey our users want/need streaming mobile media, and there you go...
I myself have played with streaming radio (somafm.com) using pocket player. It works great. Audio is so much easier to do then video which is why you can do it on any format.
My issue now is that my battery is dead dead, and I don't think it is going to accept the charge... Which means either my phone is fried, or my battery is fried. If its the phone, well there goes that... If it's the battery, maybe I can wrangle a battery out of Cingular or who ever they are calling themselves these days...
So it may be a while before I am able to tell you how I got past the failed to connect to network error.
All i can say is play around with you internet settings, and try fussing with the media player settings (Ergo Buffer etc). Make sure that it is able to access all ports, and that if you are using WiFi that the ports are open.
hopefully i will have a charge tomorrow.
I've had this problem.. try the actual connected to the wall charger.. not a cheap knockoff- but one that has a usb-usb connector that goes into the wall.. i'm not positive what it looks like. but my father has one and it's helped my 8125 more than once
good luck,
damon
Thanks for the reply on the wall charger.
I actually googled it last nite, and came across someone else who did the same stupid thing as me... Apparently, for some cosmic reason, when the wizard is dead it will only accept a recharge from the stock, in the box charger...
Don't ask me why, I thought USB started with the word Universal...
So new wisdom for the day, when your Phone is totally dead, it will only charge on the stock charger that came in the box. Now why it wouldn't accept a charge on my USB cable is beyond me. Everything else I own has no problem with it...
So thanks again for confirming my findings... Good stuff to know!
Anyways back to the streaming problem at hand. Now that my phone is powered up, and ready to rock I will tell you the settings that I have...
Under start\settings\connections\ network cards. Have it saying that it connects me to the internet.
Don't know if that helps, but thats what I have and I remember that I did that my self.
Next under programs\streaming media\options I have connection via internet. I do remember changing that to get it to work. I just changed that particular setting, and can confirm that by changing to something other then what my phone is connecting to will say failed to connect. So make sure that it is the same as the previous step.
Next still under Streaming Media\options I have my UDP ports running across the gamut. Ergo, From 1024 To 65535. I do not know if it is necessary, but I would leave it open like that depending on where you are some places may have some ports closed off, and others might not.
Then under Media Buffer, I had my originally set to 10 seconds, but now have it set to 5 seconds.
I also did the registry edit that enables wireless g mode. There is a slight noticable difference in speed.
Now here's the kicker... After you get all that done, and everything works and so on, and your phone is now comparable to the iPhone (which my can now do everything the iPhone can do, cept for making phone calls cause I just use my wizard as a dedicated Pocket PC, but it can do one thing the iPhone can't do, and that is have a visualizer going when I am listening to MP3's), your now going to find that the video's that they have on m.youtube.com right now, at this very moment...
really kinda suck...
For some reason, youtube/google=gootube, decided to convert only the absolute worst videos they have. No music video's, no news videos, nothing. Just a bunch of what appears to be video blogs, and not much else...
Sure there is a trailer or two. But it will be a while before it becomes the youtube that we are all familiar with. You can't even find the numa numa guy on it yet...
I mean i know that gary isn't the end all of viral vid's, but he is, at the moment, still the most popular...
That or Star Wars kid...
Now my question is, does anyone know of any sites where this new found feature can be put to good use? Foxnews.com for some reason thinks that only people who are subscribed to cingulars 3g data package can watch their video's. Cnn.com can only d/l podcasts, which takes forever and is usually not worth the time because by the time you are done, you've already finished your cappuccino at the cafe' and are already out the door.
So again, does anyone know any good sites???
...oh and one more thing, streaming with the HTC Streaming Media only works via internet explorer. Sorry, Opera, even the full version, doesn't work...
CID Unlocking the 8125
Dear PPL
I have a used 8125 and am not sure if it is CID locked or unlocked. I am using it in India. I can insert any sim card so it seems to be SIM unlocked.
Before CID unlocking it, how do I tell if it is already unlocked or not.
Appreciate your replies.
Also which is the cleanest, no non-sense WM6 ROM for the Wizard, I need a good camera patch, and everything working. Including GPS functionality.
Thanks
this is the title... title...
as far as sim locking goes the only thing that I could do was plug in another card from another provider. That's how I figured out that I unlocked my properly. The sim lock is from network to network, not phone to phone. So say you have a friend that is on A-Cellular and you are on A Cellular, you guys can swap sim cards all day long and the phones will work.
However if you are on A-Cellular and your friend is on B-Cellular, what should happen is that you guys cannot swap phones, unless your phones are unlocked. So that is the easiest way to tell. (A Cellular/B Cellular mean nothing I was just using that as an example BTW).
Now, as far as CID locking, I really haven't the foggiest idea. I don't know how much this forum is kept up to date, and I have not found any stickies or tutorials that really explain what exactly some of these things mean...
Sorry I cannot help any further then that
Oh and just curious, do you mean GPS or GPRS? GPS function you will need something like tomtom navigator hardware for that to work (generally plugs in the SD card slot, not the USB slot. Kinda Stupid in that respect). GPRS should already be functioning on that phone. Of course should being the operative term...
solution to "failure to connect" error
so, i have the 8525 (htc ttyn) with wm5, and the solution to this problem is quite simple....thanks to boe-dye for alluding to this setting.
the >>progam/stream media/menu/options -- connect via:>> needs to match the method which you are connecting to your streaming source
simply put, if you're using your nic (802.11 b/g) it should be the internet or whatever matches your >>settings/network card -- connection>>
likewise if you are connecting via gsm/3g/mediaNet etc. then you should select that "cellular" signal
hope this makes sense.
(the name "the internet" is misleading, since even using gsm, etc connects you to the actual net the same as your 802.11 card)
enjoy.
oh cool... Well that makes much more sense as to why it worked
Now I have a question...
Does anyone know how to get Retina WiFi Scanner to work??

Un0-Retirement

EDIT: SORRY ABOUT THE TITLE IT WAS MEANT TO BE UN-RETIREMENT
Hey guys,
I just brought my old Alpine out of retirement, It works OK except it was retired because I broke the sim card socket.
I was going to use it for tom-tom but just left it ignored for years. I fancy using it now as a way of having a nice moile internet browser around my house, (Via Bluetooth, possibly wireless eventually if I can justify the costs)
Its an old XDA2 Branded device and what I really want to do is
Upgrade the os to get all the latest driver versions even upgrade the OS from the standard if it is not having issues. all I need working is the BT and SD card reader really and as few bugs as possible.
I really want rid of all the O2 crap as well just the plain basic good software.
Any recommendations of what browser to use (is there a firefox mobile?) i considered opera as well.
any other ideas of cool little apps to make this a good device that will only use in hope to brose net ad a couple of games, perhaps have skype on it for example
any advice is welcome as I have been away from the scene for 2 years.
Thanks guys
The quickest way i found to clear out the O2 garbage was to hard reset and then when it says "Custom application will be installed in 3 seconds", or something like that do a soft reset.

G1 802.1x Support

Hey guys i'm thinking about getting this phone or the tilt. Main reason is i know WM6 supports 802.1x wifi security modes, which my school uses EAP-PEAP. i dont know whether or not the g1 supports it. Does it? i've been googling for a bit and nothing comes up. Thanks in advance.

All I can see is WPA and WPA2 it doesn't let me configure it further. So I am going to guess no... I don't have any EAP or RADIUS routers to check.
But even if it doesn't have it... it can always come out later cause it is just software.
damn how long will it take........honestly i believe they released a half baked product anyway hopefully they'll do it in time before i get my tilt.

You have to remember this product has only been out a week and a half and already they sent out a firmware update. Most other HTC devices don't get updates unless its from WM 6 to 6.1
Google likes to release things that are just bare minimum and use your feedback to build the rest. You will probably see quite a few firmwares being released. Remember this is all to benefit you. While it may be "half baked" to you right now... in the future it will include all the things you need... but not all those things you hated about other OS's
oh they already have firmware updates out? thats cool. Thanks
PEAP and 802.1x
Developers! I wish that i could contribute but i'm not a programmer. I am however leading a group of students on my campus to use the G1 to it's fullest potential. Everything from Gapp's to media sharing. The issue now is that there is no support/options for PEAP authentication on our campus environment. We have some of the best wifi coverage of most campus's i've been to but it defeats the $200 bill of the G1 if i have to rely on the edge network.
Is there any developers I can test configs for? I'll be a tester and can usually report back quickly.
needed configs for campus:
-WPA
-TKIP
-802.1 and PEAP
-AD username and Pswd
Thanks!
Jolopicus
It should work fine if you have root and set up the wifi connection manually with a custom wpa_supplicant.conf, the iptables thread in the development section would be a good start for reading what ya need to do. the default wpa_supplicant.conf on the device has all the settings possible in the comments.
Hi all,
I bumped this topic instead of creating a new one. So i hope this the right way. If i should make a new topic please say so. But this was the closes and only thing i could find about the topic.
Is there any information about getting RADIUS or 802.1x working on the G1. (My campus has this and i like to have internet access on my phone there as i do not have a data abbo).
I read that rooting your phone is a option, but i am not sure what image i should use and how to install it so i hope there is a way to do it on 1.6.
Looking forward to your replays.

I have connection now with a WPA-PEAP network. That one is working but the raduis (8.02.1X) still shows up as web

Can I use X1 as a wireless bridge?

My home wireless router and my PC are just close enough to connect, but the signal is a bit poor. Sure I could fix this in a whole number of ways, but I was wondering (as you do) could I use my X1 as an network extender? Essentially using it as a bridge between my PC and router to get a better signal?
Anyone know if any software of this nature has been developed?
yes and also as oven and fridge
i don't think is possible but anyway im not sure
thanks for the (not very) helpful reply. i know you can get software to turn the x1 into an access point (using the mobile connection for internet access) so im guessing its only one stage on from there to make the x1 perform the same functinality but connected to a wireless AP instead of the mobile networ kand thus acting as a bridge.
Why don't you buy an network bridge instead of using your phone as one. A cheaper one is no more than a SD card.
I don't know, but it's kinda dumb task to do for a phone... even if the phone is able to complete the task.

Because, as I said in my first post, there are loads of ways of solving this problem but I was wondering if it is possible and if anyone has done it.
Sure I could go out and do the boring thing and buy a bridge but then I would never gain any knowledge about the subject and engage in discussions with other people that think the same way.
You go ahead and solve your problems the easy way - by purchasing a mass made box. Me - I want to find out more about how things work and what is and isn't possible, not because it's the easiest or best solution, but because I like to learn.
Hi
I guess it could be possible theorically
im not in knowledge of any sw to do that
But anyway i think even if there is a sw the thing is that if you want it
just for fun is ok but using it as a real bridge it can drain the battery of X1 in few hours and the phone could get very hot ...
So maybe for practical use the box should be better
good luck

Only problem is. Apple users.. Iphone/Ipod Touch. Can't always connect.
But other phones with wireless, laptop etc. Can connect.
