H918 - signal strength cuts out and searches for network - LG V20 Questions & Answers

I've just bought a used H918 (unlocked T-Mobile) and tested it and everything seemed fine. I'm in the UK. I tried to make another call this morning and it wouldn't connect. When I looked, the signal indicator showed zero bars and 2 little rotating arrows above. Eventually it would jump to 2 bars and then 5. I tried with a different sim and the same happened. I put it side by side with an LG G2 with the other sim (same carrier, iD mobile) and the G2 showed full signal with both sims while the V20 kept dancing around.
It's not rooted or modded and has just been updated to the latest security patch (still on Nougat)
I need to decide what to do - the seller will accept a return but the phone is mint and was great for what I paid. Is there likely to be a fix I can do or is it a hardware issue that's beyond my control? Time is of the essence as I need to let them know.

The v20 is known to have poor cellular reception, also I've seen several reports of people who are using US variants having difficulty on other carriers outside of the US

Thanks for letting me know, but that's terrible news! I looked into potential issues and thought it was only potential GPS or heavy battery drain. I guess it's not going to be any better with a Korean variant?

Anyone replaced their T-Mobile model with international unlocked?

Right now (just started looking into this) this seems like a no-brainer. Performance is much better and it's rooted!!!! I know you lose wifi calling in theory (although mine hasn't worked since I purchased it despite hours of troubleshooting and tweaking (sucks bc no coverage at home (rural)), but that can potentially be addressed by a custom rom? Thoughts?
I did the switch. Battery life is better. Speed difference is unnoticeable. Signal/Calling quality is fine. I would most likely switch back if root was available for the t-mobile model (but wouldn't if advanced calling was available for international).
Getting wifi calling + VOLTE + video calling is no small task if that matters to you (the S6's wifi calling was never ported to international models even though they shared the same chipset). It would take porting a qualcomm written csc to a exynos chipset and either porting t-mobile's custom ims implimentation or making the standard ims implimentation work with t-mobile. That being said, it has been done. The Galaxy S5 saw advanced calling from the S6 ported back, HTC's flagships have had wifi calling ported.
I had an international Note5 on T-Mobile's network. I hated not having WiFi calling and advanced messaging features and such. I was able to flash a ROM that included some of the lost features luckily, but that would not be the case here since the chipsets are different (at least not possible now). Additionally, for some reason the signal was always worse than my girlfriend's Note5 even when side-by-side. Consistently worse... I wouldn't deal with the hassle again.
hi, I switched too and I'm glad I did, battery is definitely better and I didn't notice performance differences (nor reception). I believe wifi calling hasn't been/can't be ported but some roms support VOLTE. Just be advised that samsung doesn't honor the warranty of international variants in the US hence insurance companies such as Upsie won't insure your device.
How do you switch?

Just got an international variant yesterday. Loving it but been struggling to change my CSC to one that supports Samsung Pay. I know the LYS CSC supports it and I've flashed it in Odin which reported success and did fine but upon using my device it didn't change my CSC. So confused as to why...

This is the first phone I've owned that I really haven't felt the need to root. I used to want to root to disable bloatware and to change the theme of the system which I can do on the S7 edge without root. Only thing I do miss is the ad blocking with root but that's a small annoyance that I can live it. Also with the T-Mobile version you get all the necessary bands for extended range LTE which is amazing here in the LA area. Everywhere I go I have solid LTE whether it's indoors or oudoors. I also just used Samsung pay yesterday for the first time at Sprouts grocery store and it worked so easily on the first try! This pay system is flawless. The old lady behind me had a surprised look on her face when I payed that way. Got a free $20 gift card from Samsung for using it for the first time. Just my personal opinion on why the carrier branded T-Mobile version is better.

This is my SM-935T Model phone two sim cards active okay..?
i bought it on ebay dual sim for 620$ shipped. its way snappier and the battery life is significantly better. i havent rooted it yet

My experience with my international S6 was very similar to yours. I moved back to the states with it and signed up with T-mobile. In my gym, which is underground, I could barely get a 4G signal (or nothing at all). Emails and notifications wouldn't come through even when I was connected to 4G. I got the s7e on tmobile and although signal still isn't strong, notifications come through reliably.
Not too scientific as they are different phone models and I've never paid this observation too much mind but now that I've heard your story, I'm inclined to think that carrier specific models might be better at picking up signal on that carrier.
Been using international version for a while, returned my t-mobile version on the 20th day, by that time it was apparent to me that the t-mobile version would not be getting rooted anytime soon. In my opinion this device is much better rooted, especially since i like a lot of color schemes on my status bar and the Ads were driving me crazy. would've preferred a rooted t-mobile version, but a rooted international version is light years better than a stock version of any kind imo.

Upgraded to 64GB N6P, signal and data speeds worse than old one

I was reaching the limits of my 32GB device so I bought what looked like a good one on Swappa. It's in very good condition and seems well cared for, and everything works fine. I've unlocked the bootloader and installed the same ROM (Pure Nexus) and versions as my 32GB unit had. The problem is that I often see H where my brother, who has the same phone, sees LTE. I often can't use the phone, where he can. It basically seems that the signal is worse on my new phone than the other ones. I've checked the baseband version and they are the same.
Does anyone have any ideas on why this might be? I am thinking of sending it in for support.

Have you checked your apns? I would look and see if there are any missing or if something doesn't look right. If so manually key APN in and see if that resolves your issue.

You can usually find your apns on whatever carrier you have website just Google around shouldn't be too hard..

Is your latest phone a NA model or International? You didn't say but are you on the same carrier as your brother? Have you swapped SIM cards to rule that out?
Clone your brother's APN/ settings exactly. You can either edit an existing APN or start a new one.
Both of you run an app called LTE Discovery to find out which LTE band your brother's phone is on and what his signal strength is, at the same time you have different signal strength. Are you on the same LTE band with different signal strength? Are you on a different, weaker band? Why isn't your phone connecting to the same "stronger" band? Swap the SIM card, to see if the "good" LTE band follows the SIM or stays with his phone.
I haven't swapped out SIM cards and we are on the same carrier (T-Mobile). However, I didn't think it was necessary, because my prior phone, a 32GB N6P, performed perfectly and we always seemed to have the same signal more or less.
I have checked the APNs and they are set the same.
We installed LTE Discovery. Often I would not have LTE while he would have it. A few times when he had it and I didn't, I tried using LTE Discovery to restart the radio. Once, it switched to LTE but soon after that downgraded back to H.
Unfortunately you have no warranty if you bought the phone on Swappa. You can always try a factory reset and see if that helps. Maybe the previous owner did some software mods that are causing an issue. Are you on stock? Latest build and radio? Are you a Verizon customer or another carrier? Verizon has had their own builds in January and February partly because of radio issues. Are you using a case or screen protector? If so you might want to try using the phone naked to ensure nothing is interfering with the antenna. You could also contact your carrier and check if they see anything on their end. That helped me once when I was having signal issues. You should also be able to get a new sim from your carrier for free, which is worth a try.
The phone apparently has Nexus Protect in place, and maybe there is still factory warranty remaining? The phone came stock, but I've installed Pure Nexus/TWRP installed, exactly the same as my other phone. Latest radio. T-Mobile customer. Thanks

U.S. ATT Compatibility experiences so far? And unlock experiences?

Considering getting a 6T off the OnePlus site.
For those that got the devices early:
-Do you have experiences on AT&T Network to comment on how compatible it is? I've had some devices use to work well on ATT now not so good due to band migration; just curious to hear how the 6Ts fare.
-Please confirm: both SIM and BootLoader unlocks can be done immediately when purchasing from the OnePlus site (as opposed to the T-Mobile edition that's locked)
-Are there band/frequency differences between the T-Mo and ATT Versions? I'm on ATT but usually have bought "T-Mo" versions of devices because they were less likely to be BL locked; but my last phone (OP3T) broke me out of that cycle.
Any other AT&T-relevant experiences would be appreciated.

I am on AT&T with the 6t. I've only had mine for a week but have had no issues with anything network related. I came from a 3T and have better service with my 6T. There were 2 dead spots on my drive to / from work with the 3T that I no longer have with the 6T. I haven't had a chance to root or unlock mine yet due to being busy at work but so far I am happy. I loved the 3T but don't miss it a bit.
I have a 6t that I bought directly from OP that I use as my daily phone on Cricket, which uses AT&T towers. I have no signal problems, and download speeds are great. Anywhere I expect to have LTE I have it.
Phone is by far my favorite device I've had. Easy to unlock, install TWRP and flash kernels, and install mods through magisk!
I've bought my phone but don't get to open it until Christmas. It should arrive in a day or two. [emoji1360][emoji1360]

What did you do to get volte? Was your previous phone an att branded device? I came from an unlocked S8 that didn't get volte and I can't get volte on my 6T. Prior to my S8 I had the 6P which also didn't get volte.
I suggest reading this thread, https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/help/att-verizon-volte-vowifi-calling-t3860031. There's information on how to enable VoLTE settings on the phone. Most of the stuff in that thread pertains to Verizon, but some AT&T stuff too. Ultimately it's up to AT&T to provision your service properly. VoLTE is available. VoWiFi is not. Took me a couple of days & a couple of hours on the phone with AT&T support to get my line provisioned properly because the IMEI wasn't recognized. But that was only days after the phone was released. Would think that shouldn't be a problem now.
Once you get VoLTE working Visual Voicemail should work, but you need to use the AT&T app. However, for me it isn't always automatically retrieving VMs when I get them. My notifications will show I have a VM but I have to open the AT&T VVM app, go into the menu and Refresh. Only then does it pull the VM into the app.
This should be interesting. On my 3T I have ATT visual voicemail working, and it mostly works for transcribing messages (except long ones like my wife leaves...) But I don't think the phone is volte capable so I've never tried setting that up. I don't get to play we the phone til Xmas though!

Yeah. I came from using a 5yo AT&T branded HTC One M7 and VVM worked fine on that. When I first got the 6T (unlocked int'l version) & popped in my sim, I had VoLTE but I couldn't get the VVM app to activate. That's what prompted my call to AT&T support. That's when they told me VoLTE was needed for VVM. I'm not entirely sure how accurate that statement is. The rep tried a bunch of stuff to get it working, including updating my line with the IMEI from the 6T. That's when things went bad. I lost all data completely. Actually, if I switched APNs, I could get 3G data. But it took two days before AT&T sorted it out and I got LTE back. Since then everything pertaining to AT&T service has been fine. I've never found the need for VoWiFi, although it would be cool to have, if necessary. And I wish their Advanced Messaging feature wasn't so limited.

On att rn. Have been since the op2. No issues at all ? first thing I do is unlock bootloader
I got my 6T (Int'L) on or about Nov. 23, which I had purchased from OT - I am using it on a Family mobile plan which uses T-Mobile towers. VoLTE was not a part of my original service plan..but because I needed a New Nano-SIZED sim card for this phone, adding it to my account wasn't as straight forward as it normally is. Once I switch my number to the new sim card, I got an email saying if I wanted VoLTE/VoWiFi(?) features turned on - I'd have to go to another website (Cricket/Verizon/ AT&T?) to register my new sim card and this would "turn on" the VoLTE features. After all this I get a Bright "VoLTE" Icon on the status bar whever i get my LTE signals - So it is VoLTE capable. Perhaps AT&T is doing something similar to get your VoLTE activated?
My plan is to do some testing next week for basic stuff before transferring my flag from my 3T. Will report back how it goes. Appreciate any other Insights from other users!

Fired mine up yesterday when I got it. Got it all set up, then swapped out the SIM from
my Mate 9, to the OP6T this morning. Apparently the "speed" issues I had with the 9
are corrected with the 6T. I use a Straight Talk MVNO (tracfone) at&t card. Previously,
I was LUCKY to get between 9-10 meg down, 1-2 up. Now I'm getting 33 meg down, 15 up.
Guess the newer phone has a better modem, or the extra frequencies to work more proper
with the newer device.
So far, no issues, working good.
After my experience with the OnePlus One, I was still a little cautious about buying something
from them again, but, on the surface so far it appears they might have their act together.

I came from a OP3 been using the 6T with ATT prepaid for the past month and it works great. Far superior in speeds to the OP3. For example at my house I was getting download speeds of about 30mbps on my OP3 on the 6T I got over 90mbps LTE+ at home! I keep pissing off my buddy who just got the brand new iPhone XS on ATT and he is getting half the DL speeds that I am when comparing speed tests :victory:. Don't think VoLTE works on prepaid but I have yet to try to enable it. About to go to nebraska for vacation to test service out there.
Bootloader is very easy to unlock. Did it the second day of having the phone following the Official XDA employees youtube video.

things to ask/check before buying the lg v20 used?

I have a v20 and I love it very much.
I bought refurb. screen is crap leaking and burned in spots. usb plug no longer holds the cable inside so I use a rubber band to keep it inside.
camera glass on rear broke out of the blue and then camera started getting messed up and now is hazy and doesnt even focus. thats physical.
what do I look for when buying used? what do I check?
after getting burnt by my g4 bootloop and the v20 quality issues, id like to find another v20 because it offers the swappable battery which is a HUUUUUGE benefit to me. I keep another battery in my wallet and swap while walking. I hardly connect mine through its charging port, also because its faulty.
if the v30 or 40, which are beautiful phones had swapping batteries, of course id get those.
I dont live in the US so prices for new are highish vs the US
Where do you live, if UK I would recommend the H918 T-Mobile version as it has all the needed LTE Bands for the UK and Europe.
I bought the Vs 995 Verizon phone and while it works well in UK it requires the APN to be set manually whereas the T-mobile version does it automatically on sim entry. Hope this is of some help.

Galaxy s10 (all models) LTE issues

How many people are having the LTE issues?
Samsung had me reset my Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings to try and fix the issue. Of course that didn't help. What does my Bluetooth and WiFi settings have to do with Cellular service? I think they are grasping because there is an actual defect in the phone. I purchased it directly from Samsung but I'm on Sprint. Sprint has acknowledged an issue but I didn't get it through them so I'm out of luck. When you spend over a thousand dollars on a phone, you expect it to work. I had two dropped calls this morning while driving in an area that has service. The phone is basically unusable unless you are on Wi-Fi. (at least with mine) I have a Galaxy s10 +

Same here with my Sprint Galaxy S10 Plus I'm Roaming 95% of the time and when LTE does kick in nothing loads. So I have to use Wi-Fi.
Exynos S10+ on T-mobile, no LTE issues on my model.

Also something to keep in note, Sprint acknowledging a fault doesnt necessarily mean there is a fault or that it is a known issue, its just "good" customer service, they simply cant troubleshoot with the level 1 support, so its easier just to replace your device.

No, there is an issue with the Sprint version of the phone
No LTE issues with the unlocked on T-Mobile...
I've been having issues with my Unlocked S10+ on ATT. About every other day I lose my data but it still shows LTE, and this notification pops up. I don't get my data back until I restart my phone 1 or 2 times..
Side note: I've been getting this notification since I got my phone at the beginning of march. ATT can't seem to help me or even give me an answer to what's going on

Sorry about that, I just assumed since it's Sprint they were all Qualcomm LTE (which of course I am on) Wish I could edit the title to give a more detailed so it's not misleading.
It's funny though, if I run a speed test, speeds are great on LTE. It's just connecting takes forever, then the connection doesn't stay.
Don't get me wrong, I love everything else about the phone.

Yes actually but had no issue with it on my Note 9 before I got the s10+.

Yes actually but had no issue with it on my Note 9 before I got the s10+.

Others have posted online with the same issue since 2015. Do a quick Google search and you'll see. Some switch to a "postpaid" plan and the issue goes away. And some didn't have any issues until getting a new phone.

You know anyone on a postpaid plan with AT&T you could possibly swap SIM's with temporarily to see if the issue persists? Not sure how often it happens, if it's only once a day it may not be a feasible option.
May be able to be resolved with AT&T's firmware?
Did your Note 9 have AT&T's firmware or was it Samsung's unlocked firmware?

The note 9 I got from ATT, my s10+ I bought from Samsung directly.

Then maybe that would be your best bet, using their firmware

I'm getting very slow lte speeds on my s10plus Snapdragon with Verizon in my house which usually has a strong connection. 6mbps is terribly slow
ADS3 update with fingerprint patch and fresh factory reset. I did not use any restore methods. Just setup from scratch

Same location just restarted my phone and downloads instantly shot up to 50mbps. Better but still not right. I shouldn't have to restart my phone every few hours to be able download at a decent speed on lte

What carrier are you on? Factory unlocked?
So, I switched from Sprint to T-Mobile and the issue followed. I figured out that when I connected to LTE it would connect to band 2 or 4. If it does, my data stops working completely. I went in and disabled bands 2 and 4 and it works now.
I think there is an actual issue with the phone on bands 2 and 4. Just my opinion....
I'm completely up to date on the software as well.
