Should I factory reset after Oreo upgrade? - LG G6 Questions and Answers

Any noticeable difference in performance, battery, stability etc.? Is this a procedure you carry out every time?
Just would like to know your opinion.
People have been saying I should, to get the best experience out of it. I noticed a drop in graphics performance after the OTA.

[Q] Would you recommend me this phone?

Hello everyone, I am about to retire my One M7, which served me well in all aspects except for the camera and more importantly, battery life. I don't know anyone who has this phone and I will most likely be locked in for at least 2 years. I've read many reviews but I would like some personal opinions. Hence, I most kindly ask you for your opinion
1. Is the bloat ware intrusive on the experience (including battery life and performance)
2. Are there any significant slow downs in stock and if so are they easy to fix?
3. Can you still use the multiwindow features in a different launcher or are you constrained to stock?
4. How is the battery life following the Lollipop update - I have seen some issues crop up with SD805 devices, but as I will be buying a fresh device will I be safe?
5. The battery life compares very favourably to other phones synthetically - does this hold up in real life?
6. Are there any major negatives to the phone which you have come across (size is not an issue for me).
Thank you very much for reading and best regards,
Jaken 326
1. You can easily disable all the bloat. It disappears from the app drawer.
2. Multitasking takes a sec to load, same the gallery going from photos. Nothing drastic.
3. multi-window works with any launcher
4. Battery life on Lolipop is a bit worse than on KK, but should get you through the day easy.
5. I switched from HTC M7 and it is MUCH better.
6. Slow update to Lolipop, Qi charging back adds thickness. Nothing major really.
Thank you very much, you put my mind at ease over several things!
If you want a good camera then get this phone. It's one of the best, if not the best, smart phone camera's on the market.
Battery life? It's decent but the screen is very bright and high res so screen on time isn't the most amazing but the battery will easily get most people through a day. Plus you can always carry a state battery if needed.
Lag? Yeah occasionally in the gallery app and recent apps menu but it's not enough to worry about.

1 week in... And I'm losing faith. Fast. - Updated.

9 Days ago, I made the decision to switch networks due to Sprint's inability to handle MMS, data, signal, calls, or anything else. I walked into a T-Mobile store, and after a brief credit check, I was told I can choose any phone I'd like. My original intent was to hang onto my Nexus 5, which I absolutely loved, but I was told I was required to get a new phone. I wasn't exactly upset knowing I'd be getting a new phone, so I walked over to the displays and struggled for over 20 minutes trying to decide which phone to get. I eventually whittled my choices down to two phones. The LG G3 and the HTC One M9. After a bit of research and test driving, I chose the HTC One M9.
It is a seriously nice phone. The materials used to craft this baby are top notch, and definitely give the impression of quality. I very much like the way it looks and sounds, and even though it could be unwieldy to hold (slippery), I got around that issue by slapping a nice Spigen case on it. HTC's Uh Oh protection is a nice touch and the specifications are equally as impressive, which helped sell this phone to me. The thought of a 64-bit 8-core CPU was exciting.
It's my first flagship phone; everything should be impressive. And yet, I'm kind of not impressed. My two main complaints about this phone are the button placement (I think having the power button and volume buttons on the same side of the phone and right next to each other is kind of silly, then again, my N5 wasn't like that, so I could just be used to that layout. ) and the performance. Yes, you heard me, the performance. I don't even care about the joke of a camera this thing has, it's really the performance of the cutting-edge octacore CPU that they slapped in this thing that really frustrates me. Out of the box, this phone comes underclocked due to overheating issues. That, to me, is downright laughable. Did anyone at HTC test this phone? A flagship device whose performance is throttled from the moment you turn it on. That's like buying a Corvette straight from the dealer, starting up the car and finding out that Chevy disabled two of the cylinders in the engine to ensure it didn't overheat. It's not just the thought of this that bugs me, the performance of the phone is actually terrible at times. My Nexus 5, given it was running a 5.1.1 ROM, was butter smooth in all but the most complicated of situations. This phone, however, limited to a paltry 1.5GHz and another cluster that is slow to wake up and help out, struggles with some truly mundane tasks. For example, swiping to my Google Now Cards is laggy, loading Google Messenger is choppy and slow. Scrolling, in general, is almost never smooth. I've tried different ROMs, Kernels, and governors but can never really find a nice balance between performance and battery life. The CPU is ALWAYS up to something too. Even when the screen is off. My Nexus 5 would achieve, regularly, about 70-75% Deep Sleep throughout the course of a day. It sipped battery. This phone achieves, on a normal day, about 60-65%. Thankfully it has a larger battery than the N5, otherwise I seriously doubt it'd last as long.
Overall it's been bittersweet experience. I really like this phone, I want to love it, but I can't. I realize that this device is still in its infancy and HTC can roll out updates to hopefully iron out some of these problems. I also realize that the community for this phone is also in its infancy, and that down the road, there may be terrific alternatives to Sense 7 and the Stock Kernel. But I have 5 days left, and the idea of swapping this phone out for something better is slowly starting to grow on me. I've been toying with the idea of getting an Xperia Z3 or LG G3 instead. It'll cost me $50 to swap the M9 out for a different phone. On the other hand, my mind is telling me to be patient and that it'll work out in time with this phone. So I turn to you. Anyone else share the same frustrations with me? What do you think I should do? Should I wait or should I swap this baby out for something else?
UPDATE June 8th 2015:
I went to the T-Mobile store the day after posting this. I researched and thought long and hard about the decision I had to make. After a while I came to the conclusion that I would be paying $50 (Restocking fee) to essentially downgrade to another device. In fact, the only other flagship device that even appeals to me at this point is the LG G4, which seems to be getting along as well as the S6 and One M9 have been (from what I've read). Thanks to recommendations from others in the community, I made some changes that have greatly improved my experience with this device. I'm still not a huge fan of Sense 7 nor am I astonished by the Camera's performance, but a new launcher restored much of the stock Android feel and an upcoming firmware update promises to improve the camera. Performance while multitasking is fantastic and while there are a few hiccups here and there, I can't say my experience is any worse than what it was with my Nexus 5. The Battery life, a common complaint from others about this phone, is fantastic in my eyes. It's nice to sometimes forget about charging my phone at night, waking up the next morning and still having enough juice to get me into the afternoon.
Overall, I've only recently concluded that I did not give this device a fair chance for as long as I should've. Coming from my Nexus 5, the change was a bit of a shock. I suppose that played into my initial disappointment. I'm actually starting to fall in love with this phone. Compliments and exclamations of wonder and impact are common from others that I let check out my phone, even from die-hard iPhone fans, which is always nice. I figured that I should update this thread because I see the conversation still continues. No phone is without its flaws, my beloved N5 was hardly without its own. Many "flaws" are a matter of perspective. I'm confident I've made the right choice with this device, and I look forward to the bright future that lies in store for it (please God, give me an AOSP ROM).
ps. The 1.5 clock only applies to the A53 cores. I'm sure people more technically inclined and chime in and confirm this.
I've had nothing but smooth operation on this phone. I am on Leedroid at the moment, but was on international stock rom before and was just as smooth.
I'd be looking as to why you are experiencing the performance issues, and if you're not happy, I'm sure the consumer protection laws in the US allow you to return it for something else?
Best of luck
You are in the 14 day window go an return it
Go get your nexus 5 back or talk to someone who isn't trying to hose you into buying a new phone.

Granted I don't know if the specs on your phone didn't match up to what was described in this link, Or if you had it leased.

Yeah, I've noticed the lag when swiping to the goole now screen. I'm confident that performance will be better when they give us 5.1, which by then they'll have figured out how to best optimize S810. Best to test out your options, you might even want to consider the M8 which has GPE 5.1 ROMS ready for it. That phone performs and has excellent battery life.

Have you installed the xposed fix memory leak apk? That may help with lag on 5.0.x

Yeah I have (doesn't it only fix that off screen animation bug?). The lag when scrolling to the google now screen affects my M8 as well if I recall correctly.

I thought it reduced the over all RAM usage from the system over a prolonged period of time. I thought that might affect lag overall on the phone, but I could be mistaken. I haven't experienced any lag on my device yet so I was just throwing out ideas.
Have you tried rooting and putting leedroid on it. It's a beast. No lag. No stutter. Smooth
I never experienced any lags except when gaming during charging the battery with a speed charger.

Same, lag isn't a problem except for when using google now launcher and swiping to the left for the google now screen. It's minor, but annoying nonetheless. For the OP who was used to the Nexus 5's smoothness it's probably extremely noticeable.

True, I actually got rid of google now because it was annoying me every time my phone slipped out of my hand and started it. I still am hopeful knowing the m9 should get multiple updates in the future and run 5.1.

still you are brute forcing the M9 into throttling its GPU this way and about the best thing on the M9 is actually gaming speed thanks to it's very powerful GPU
Coming from a M8, at first i was a little frustrated for the overheating and the camera of the M9. But then, neither the m7 or m8 were great cameras.
I read a lot of reviews and even started thinking of selling the M9 but swap for what? S6 ? God no, please, no more touchwiz. Lg,i had the lg3 and it was L(a)G and slow, much slower than the M8 (i know, different screen's resolution). So, in the end, i prefer keep the M9, the camera improve a lot with the update, and many more updates will come.
Then, there is sense 7, sense is one of my favourites android skins. Light, smart and very, very fast. I absolutely have no lag in M9 (all stock). And i use a lot blinkfeed, i missed it in any non Htc phone. And there is the boomsound, the touch to awake screen...
When you say you have lag with Google Now cards, I'm assuming you are using the Google Launcher. I have noticed some lag here and there with the Google launcher, but the stock Sense launcher performs admirably. It's quick and never seems to drop frames when gaming either. How did you leave the phone stock before you started flashing different ROMs to it? I think that may actually be the issue. Every review of the M9 has stated that the phone is smooth and HTC's software is better than ever. Messing with the software may be what's causing the poor experience.

I occassionally play a round of Boom Beach, Clash of Clans or Limbo while the phone is on the charger. Can you elaborate a bit on how this could "kill the battery"? Is it related to charging while the GPU is cranking up the thermals?

I'm using the stock Sense launcher and my phone is buttery smooth. While I don't use the Google Now Launcher, Google Now performs great on this phone.
All of the games that I play are also super smooth. Granted, I don't play games that demand a high frame rate, but those games that I do play are far smoother on this phone than my old M7.
The one issue I had with the phone was what seemed like spotty issues with wifi. I did a cache partition wipe yesterday and it seems to have helped the issue.

Stay with S4? S6?

All - I am still on my S4. I locked the phone from getting OTA updates from AT&T right after I bought it - which this forum advised so that the bootlocker would not get updated and locked.
I havent taken advantage of this to flash any ROMs, etc., and I am still on 4.2.2 since I have not been accepting AT&T updates.
Im sure this is partly a personal decision, but I was wondering whether its worth upgrading to an S6? What do people think? Not sure how tangible the benefits of an upgrade would be for me...
I have an S4. My wife has an S6. Most noticeable difference is the camera in the S6. Of course, the S6 is "more" in every other spec too. My wife doesn't really notice the lack of uSD card and it's too early to tell what the battery is going to do.
Thanks for the reply.
Is there any real noticeable difference in terms of performance - speed, lag, etc?
I'm running a slimLP jdc optimized build on my S4 and it is very fast. There's no noticeable difference for general usage (phone, text, internet, tapatalk, etc). I've actually turned the CPU performance down to conserve battery. I can't comment on game performance as my wife and I don't game on our phones.

OP5 vs OP3T

I know that OP5 is a whole lot faster, but what if I'm kinda in a tight budget, should I just go with OP3T?
Also, I'm worried about the jelly scrolling, if I'm gonna have the OP5 will I get used to it? And I'm assuming not all devices has the same level of jellyness because some don't see it and some do. I also tried replicating the jelly by turning my current Xiaomi phone upside down and tried using it for three hours and I ended up getting dizzy.
So here's my usage type.
-Don't game a lot
-Browse a lot like Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook
-Music
-Rare picture taking
-I like longer battery life
I know I don't really maximize the capability of the phone but I'm taking advantage of the 6 GB RAM which helps a lot in switching apps. OP3T 6GB 128GB is priced $440 (no 64GB available) in our country and OP5 6GB is priced $530. Is the $90 difference worth it considering my type of usage?
Thank you.
I'd go with 3T for what you're wanting.
They're exactly the same.. There's no much difference from 3T and 5.. Try look some videos on youtube 3T vs 5.. The only thing change is camera and no other else (excluding CPU and RAM of course)
Go with OP5. Jelly scrolling isnt as severe as people make it out to be. OP5 is better than OP3T in every aspect. That 90$ difference is well worth it.
- runs cooler than op3t
- battery capacity is smaller than op3t, but it runs longer.
- music quality through headphone jack is slightly better than 3t. The speaker is louder too.
- camera is a step up over 3t.
- being a newer phone, its expected OP will treat it better in terms of software update.

+1 , nothing to add. snapdragon 835 is more efficient. So both phones got about the same battery life.
But, even if this list seems cool, imho, it doesn't worth the 90$ at all.
And I should add : op3t got the OIS (optical image stabilisation), it might be better in low light scenes, when the shoot is a bit longer, so the shakiness of your hand wont blur the picture as much as the op5.
Presumably $90 is a significant amount of money in your budget or you wouldn't have asked the question to begin with. The OP5 processor is more power efficient and runs cooler than the 3T but the battery life between the two phones is about the same because the 3T has a larger battery. The OP5 has more powerful camera hardware but doesn't currently take advantage of it because the camera app is pretty lousy. You can take better point and shoot pictures with a $200 Samsung phone--especially in low light. Oreo is the last official Android build the 3T will receive while the OP5 will likely receive the build after Oreo but nothing after that. The jelly scroll problem on the OP5 isn't only because the screen was installed upside down but also because OP used the 3T display in the OP5 and the display isn't powerful enough for the rest of the hardware. If the screen refreshed faster and was higher resolution nobody would have even noticed that the display was upside down in the first place. The jelly effect drives some people crazy and other people aren't bothered by it but either way it's a design flaw that shouldn't be there and won't ever be fixed with software. I find myself clearing the system cache on my OP5 a lot because of frequent scrolling lag that seems to go away temporarily after I clear the cache. It's possible the scrolling lag is how I perceive the jelly effect but it can get pretty annoying --particularly because I never previously owned a phone with that issue. Only you can ultimately decide whether the OP5 is enough of an upgrade to merit the extra money. I think you might be as happy with the 3T given the description of your needs.

Yea. This is what making me to rethink again on really what to pick between the two, almost every reviewer mentioned that it's not getting hot like the 3T because of the 10nm processor. Which adds battery life too. I think I should see an actual unit before buying to decide if the scrolling will still make me dizzy.

Dont worry about the scrolling its all fluff from people who just gotta think negative. Its a great device and has virtually zero issues. There are some folks with wifi problems and the like but honestly i havent encountered any reboots. My phone didnt even reboot when calling 911 before that update. Never had wifi problems so i guess u could get one that acts up or one that just skates through
I do believe most of the people giving bad reviews about oneplus 5 don't actually have one.
Oneplus 5 is just a beast!
I say if you can afford to pay the extta $90 then just go for the 5. You'll most likely have longer software support since its newer, and will have higher resell value than the 3T if you were to sell it down the road.
3T is still a great device though but I'd still say try getting the 5 if it's possible!

Lol lag? Scrolling lag? I do a system cache wipe maybe once every 3 weeks just because. There is no lag in this phone ever. You maybe have something going on with your phone or have a bad app misbehaving. Ordered my phone the day off launch and it's been buttery smooth ever since. I'm rooted, Magisk, stock oos on stock kernel. If you have lag.... Is think you have something going on you haven't b found yet.

I have factory reset my phone twice, tried 3 custom kernels and maximized the kernel settings for high performance and minimum latency--and the scrolling lag always comes back eventually no matter what. It's also exactly the same in safe mode so it's not caused by any app I installed. People also complain about scrolling lag on the OP5 support thread pretty much every day so it's not just me. It might be a software issue with OOS though given how buggy the stock ROM is. I haven't tried any custom ROMs for the OP5.

Battery super weak since the update.

I got the 8.0 update to my H870, since then, the battery is a little bit better on standby but when using the phone the battery is significantly weaker than the previous version.
Is there anything to do? or should I wait to 2022 for Android P in hope for better battery life ...
I noticed that also! Exactly same thing. H870, better stand by time, worse if using the phone.

Nothing to do.
Since you are a senior member you should probably know by now that major updates NEVER improve battery life in existing hardware. So let that hope go....
You could try the usual stuff that has already been mentioned hundreds of times on these forums but even in best case scenario might give you a tiny improvement or alternatively it might make things worse.
Sorry to be so glib, of course nothing personal
Mainly because LG restricted the unlocking of this ageing device to a small minority of users, the interest of developers and enthusiasts is waning...therefore not too many solutions available.

Didn't want better battery life, just not the battery life getting worse with the update.
Anyway, I think it's time to move on, this phone is very disappointing.
Thanks.
Can we assume you tried a clean factory reset after the update?
This resolves a lot of problems people have.

No, I didn't tried clean factory reset. I don't want to deal with downloading everything again, and to be honest, I don't think that we, as users, should do it, we should get a decent OTA update, in time, not a year later, and should not factory reset our device every update to stop making it getting worse and worse.
I felt the same way. A clean reset is a pain in the ass. getting all the security set up and apps working the way you like, it takes several hours of messing around. But I finally got around to it on a day off, after so many people reported that it helped. An indeed it helped. I didn't have a battery problem in the first place (I easily get a day out of a charge), for me it was more the issue of lag in opening apps. It definitely improved.
In most forums for other phones you will find that the concensus is that a clean install is a good idea with a major update. Its just the nature of operating systems, its not an LG problem. In place updating leaves behind a lot of "junk" that isn't optimised for the new version and performance suffers.
As far as OTA and the lateness, yes you are right, but this seems to be the reality of the major manufacturers...
LG is the more moderate priced of the big names, and there are definitely better bargains out there like the Chinese phones, but their updates are no more timely.
I'm told OnePLus is good with updates, but they are not cheap.
And Samsung is just as bad as LG if not worse.

I know your probably right about the "junk" left behind after the update, but never had problems like this when I had a Nexus phone or an iPhone.
Actually, I think I will stuck to the G6 until google release the Pixel 3, I don't think I'm gonna buy another Android powered phone that's not a Pixel phone.
I also had a Nexus (5) before my G6. I enjoyed both the frequent updates and the ease of unlocking and installing custom ROMs. I ended up replacing it because I got a good deal on the g6 through work, and the Nexus' 2 GB of RAM started to become more of a problem in terms of performance. It was an interesting study in how phones slow down over time-- even when I did a clean install of the original ROM it came with (Marshmallow) it still ran slower than it did when I got it. I think the bloating of apps along with google app updates put more of a burden on memory and processing than the original setup did.
I would love a Pixel but they're overpriced
I like photography and their cameras are great but not worth $700
So the G6 was a good compromise for me
