Hi all-
My MZF went for a swim a couple weeks back. Put it in a bag with some DO NOT EAT desiccant packets for a few days, actually got it to turn back on, except the Power Button didn't work and the camera crashed every time I tried to open it.
I replaced the camera module and volume rocker/power strip with OEM used parts from eBay. Phone came back on, power button and camera worked, and everything actually seemed good until I plugged the phone in to charge.
I came back a little while later and the screen is black. Phone still vibrated on fingerprint touch, and when trying to power up/down with the power button. Did not come back on reboot, and every so often can see a very brief flash on the screen. No sound either. Thinking I somehow fried the display when I plugged it back in. Thinking about getting a replacement, but all the used ones on eBay are scratchy and/or burned in, and all the "new" "OEM" ones just seem shady.
Anybody ever done anything like this? Looking for any insight!

I replaced the display on my son's a couple months ago. Went well and looks great, but from your description, I'm leaning more towards a bad battery or charger port.
Thanks, appreciate your post! It was charging properly and holding a charge before I dismantled the thing, so I don't think it's the port or the battery. (Granted I could have screwed it up by doing so.) While the screen is still dead, it does vibrate when I press the power button or do a hard restart (hold all three buttons), as well as if I touch the fingerprint scanner after letting it sit for a few minutes. Which makes me think it's booting up into the OS just fine, I just can't see it. Have an OEM display on its way from eBay, hopefully it will do the trick! I'll let you know!

Probably I'm just new, but since after rooting it, it slowly ran out of battery as phones do, but now I'm unable to switch it on. Tried several ideas but to no avail.
I guess it isn't a big deal, I can always return it to the store later today and ask for a replacement since I only bought it last week.
Whilst I'm here, anyone think it's worth dropping this and switching it for another one whilst I'm at it.
Empty battery? Maybe you should charge it for a while.
won't boot
Hi, my dell streak is only three weeks old, but all of a sudden won't boot. Haven't done anything I shouldn't have. Have just downloaded a few apps, was using it at night and woke up in the morning to find it was off and can't be switched on. Took the battery out and put it back on again. Pressed the shutter button along with the power button, and held down the volume keys along with the power button, nothing seems to make a difference. Can someone help please!

try charging it for a while?
Take it back to the store and get a replacement, if its still under warranty.
Hi Guys, thanks for your replies. It's working now, this is what happened:
I woke up in the morning to find my phone switched off and I couldn't switch it on. I connected the main power charger for 5 mins, then laptop for 5 mins to charge but neither helped. The defect I think is in the charger. I left the phone connected to the laptop for a few hours, then switched it on to find it still wouldn't switch on. Then disconnected the sync cable, took the battery out, and put it back in - and voila, it switches on!
Issues: charger failed in two weeks; the streak doesn't switch on when the battery is down even if it's connected to a source of charging (in this case, laptop). Dead battery - charge - take battery out - put it back in - switches on.
I think I have fried my Nexus 7.... didn't even think about what I did how stupid am I....
I decided to wire up a Hella connector to a USB cable the idea being to plug it into my phone for charging on the road... I then had a not so smart idea to use my OTG cable to connect the USB A connector to my Nexus 7 to see if it worked...
Nexus 7 booted past the bootloader and then nothing.... I realised then how stupid I had just been...and still nothing...
Presumably I've run a shed load of power down one of the data line..... what a fool.....
ARGH!!!!!!! anything I can possibly do to salvage it.... please!! :crying::crying::crying:
you could try something ASUS support told me, press all buttons (volume + & -, power) for 30 seconds, and if it won't boot after that, you should get a RMA

Going the RMA route would be costly. If it is dead, he'd be better off just bring a new N7.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Thanks for the suggestion but no it hasn't worked...
I've had the N7 plugged into the charger for the last 30 minutes or so and when I went back to it the screen backlight was on slightly (you can see if you look at the screen from the side)... but the whole unit was really really hot... I've obviously disconnected it but now can't get the thing to turn off, if I hold down the power button the screen flicks off but then back on.

I would think that "broken displayā€¯ units on eBay/CL probably have working mobos and batteries, as the owners are trying to dump them because of the broken screen. But, buying used is a crap shoot.
Nice that Google is selling N7s at cost (or even a loss) - but it does mean that any oem component replacements will be a significant fraction of the original price.
I was reading in Play Books when my N7 shut down due to low battery. I plugged it in and it wouldn't charge or boot and I noticed a faint light bleed and faint dots streaming from right to left on the display. I tried things like holding the power button for 30 seconds to reset, holding vol down and power to try to get to recovery, but it wouldn't take. Finally, with it plugged in, I held down the power button for just about 10 seconds and backlight and dots stopped. A few seconds later without pressing anything, it booted up. It would start to charge, but if the screen timed out, I was back to the earlier state and it wouldn't come on. So I got it started again and immediately went to developer options and checked Stay Awake while plugged in. Eventually the charge built up and I'm back to normal, at least my N7 is normal. I only mention this because the OP talked about the faint backlight and it may be worth trying.

A standard hella charger outputs 5V at 2A which is the same as your N7 original wall charger.
I doubt your problem came from the charger, it might be softbrick at an unfortunately moment.
I came across a similar problem when i was editing a custom kernel.
If you tried every method to shut down the device and failed do the following:
1. Open the case (it's quite easy to open with a plastic card)
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+Nexus+7+Battery/9895/1
2. Unplug the battery and hold the power button 30 seconds (with the battery detached)
3. Let it soak for 10 minutes
4. Reconnect the battery and close the lid.
5. Put your nexus 7 in the wall charger, and you should see the battery bar on the screen.
After that, let it charge a few minutes and boot the device.
I used my Aquos Crystal all day. The last time I remember using it was around 4:00 pm. By 5:00pm, my phone was shut off. It wont turn back on. I tried the down volume button and power button trick and it didn't work. Any other ideas? And no it isnt completely dead. It had half of it's battery life.
I can get a new one for free with my warranty but before I do that, I wanted to see if there was any other way to turn it back on.
Thanks in advance!
Try putting your phone on the charger and see if the screen turns on. Just because your phone may have had ~50% doesn't mean that something(s) was running and completely drained your battery.
We don't have root so there isn't a way I can see you doing anything to the software that would cause your situation. That's why I believe your battery is dead.
I know this is probably too late for the original poster, but I have the same symptoms. I added the volume button/power app as well. But if my phone goes completely dead that doesn't work. i found that if I take a small object, like a screwdriver, knife, key, and press really hard, when I let go it will usually come back on, YMMV, but that has been working for me for about a week. I came here looking for a better option, but until I find one, or the phone completely dies, I am left with this fix...
Good luck...

Nice tip!!! Used butter knife, pressed REALLY hard, fixed problem. Life saver!!! Thanks!!!
Try holding the upper right corner (not the absolute corner but slightly inward underneathe the power button) tightly enough and while doing that press the power button.
I got a new update for my phone and after it finished applying, my phone won't turn on. The screen is black but when i plug it into my computer i can hear the usb jingle. I tried all the button combinations but its unresponsive.

I cannot boot to either.
I've tried all the combos, vol down + power, vol up + power, vol down + bixby + power, vol up +bixby + power.

Yea, I'm going to take it to a service center cause it seems like there's nothing I can do on my side.

Did you take the phone in for service? What did they do to fix it, if they fixed it... I have a dead phone and need some answers if they are out there. I'm looking through every post that has anything to do with this subject and coming up blank - just like my phone's screen!
Part of my issue is that I had a shut down from out of nowhere on NYE. I was able to bring it back up with the power, volume up, and Bixby combo the next day. Foolishly I assumed it was a fluke and went right back to using my phone just as I had before. I saw an article about disabling the Bixby button, which seemed to be the thing to do... When the phone shut down the next day again, I couldn't bring it back because I no longer have a Bixby button for the combo. It's been down since Jan. 2, and I'm at my wit's end. Can you please update your phone status? I'd appreciate it if you can!

Lol disabling the bixby button in software does not mean you can't trigger download mode. That level of software has no idea what packages you disabled ?
Did you have Substratum themes applied before updating?

Happened with me last night, bunch of updates and then black. I was gonna send to warranty, then someone told me Power + Bixby + Vl down and it worked. How can I find out what did it
When I called Samsung, they were clueless how to get it started again as we walked through all the button combinations they had. It was fully charged when it stopped working, both times. The second time it took me a few days of trying on my own, calling, Samsung and then going into their repair store.
They took it back to work on it after I explained what was going on. He tried several things and came out and told me it may need a replacement but wanted to try one more thing. Hours later, he came back and said he hooked it up to a charger and it had been dead. Once it started charging, it showed the green battery, lightning bolt and blinking circle. It still didn't start normally, but the three button combo worked at around 20%. I'm not sure if he tried before that, but it came back on.
I've discovered that my handset is extremely sensitive to cold temperatures and shuts down. I'm in the Midwest and have been working outside in a tent like structure. I listen to music, books, or podcasts while I'm working. Many times, I will put my phone on a shelf while charging but still listening. The phone shuts off and first I have to wait for it to warm up, then it has to drain the fully charged battery, and then I start charging it again. After the first time on my own, I did the button combo right after it started taking a charge and it worked.
I'm not sure if a replacement phone is the way to go, because if this is common on the S8, I might end up with another dud that would just frustrate me more. I like the phone, but this quirk is annoying.
Last night my phone was charging and accessible fine. This morning I have a green light at the top showing I assume that it's charged but the screen is totaly black. nothing I do brings up any screen. I tried all the button combos I tried plugging it in to the charger and nothing shows any kind of reaction. I tried plugging it into my computer and the computer said it was setting up device QUSB_BULK. Then said it was set up but even after it supposedly complete I could not find the device. What the hell?
S8 Black Screen
Is the green light staying on? This happened to me on one of the many shut down times I experienced. I think I narrowed it down to my phone not liking cold temperatures, but I don't know if that is your phone's issue. It hasn't happened since last winter, so I haven't needed to do any of this for quite some time, but I'm trying to remember all of the steps I took.
I'm gonna suggest getting the battery drained back down to zero. In order to drain the battery when it's black screened, I kept trying all the button combos repeatedly for, it seems like, maybe three or more days... I couldn't tell if it was dead on several of the occasions, but when I had an indication light, it went off after days of doing any and all button combos, just to drain what battery I could.
Once you do that, while keeping it out of any extreme temps, (if there have been any) then plug in the adapter that came with it, using a good quality USB-C cord and charge it again and see if the charging screen comes up. (The Fast Adapter Charger that connects with USB 3.o is the best to use. Samsung wanted me to use the original cord, but I have no idea where that is! I just used a good quality cord.)
If that doesn't do the trick, then it's not the same issue I had, and I wish you luck on finding out and getting it fixed! Don't forget to update the site for others to find out if your tricks work... (You can still try this, but it may be just to rule it out as a possibility.) Try draining it more than you first did, and then plug it in again to see if it takes a change.
If it is taking a charge again after draining and plugging in your power cord, wait until you get back up to at least 20% and then try the three button start (Bixby / Power / Volume Up at the same time) and make sure you hold them for up to 30 seconds or until it kicks on. One time, I think I held it for almost a full minute. But it did take the change, restarted on the three button combo restart, and didn't have any new issues from its down time.
If this works for you, come back and tell us! If not, come back and report what you try and what the results are.
I really hope that helps! Good luck!

Sounds like a system problem, you can try to use the button to force a reboot, if there is no response, you can try to reinstall the system, if this still can not be solved, then you may need to replace the new screen, you can go to Witrigs to see Note 8 screen, they There is an original Note 8 Super AMoled screen for sale. The price is also relatively low.
Hello Devs, OP fans, lurkers alike
So I've had quite the quirky experience recently. Thought I had a brick in my hand for a while. Then strangeness.
Last week, I left my phone on top the car after gassing up. Half mile down the road, it slides off. My music from BT goes out. I return to find the screen smashed, display black and unresponsive.
Back inside the car, BT connects immediately and my song picks up right where it stopped. The capacitive hardware still works, vibrates when I tap or hold the BackHomeRecent, turns the "screen" off when I hold home.(or at least Android thinks its turning off).
So I decided to replace the screen and digitizer assembly with a new one. After transferring all the components as per a 50 step procedure found on ifixit, I go to power on. Nothing. No lights, motorcars, not a single luxury.
Maybe charging will help? AC USB yeilds nothing. But then my pc recognized it as USB Bulk 9008. At this point, I'm just about to give up and go buy another phone, figured its Bricked enough for me.
An hour later, my Android alarm clock for work goes off. Screen still black, but the led lit up. I had to pry it open and remove a screw to detach the battery connector to shut it up.
Obviously Android still works. Defective replacement screen, perhaps? Maybe I Fudded the reinstallation Elmer style? Is there hope to save my device?
PS. Dev Options were off during the accident, PC didn't even recognize anything while it had its cracked screen.
