Samsung Galaxy J5 2016 Android 7.1.1 Nougat Root - Samsung Galaxy J5 Questions & Answers

hi Guys
I am writing this text with the Google translator because I do not have good English language skills.
I want to root my phone. But I am afraid that I get a wrong introduction. Before I root my phone, I want to ask you for help. I want to root my phone cleanly (no viruses, no residue and so on). I want to root my phone with the best method. There are so many introductions on the internet, how to rooted his J5, but I want the cleanest and safest method.

Flash TWRP via odin with OEM Unlock toggled on and then flash magisk or superSU

In developer options in settings turn on usb debugging and oem unlock.
Download the latest version of Odin on your PC or laptop and also the usb drivers for the device.
Then download the latest twrp for your device model.
Open Odin and connect your device to your pc and put your device into download mode (Turn device off then hold volume down+power+home buttons)
In Odin click on the BL tab and find the twrp file and flash (make sure you turn off auto restart)
Then take the battery out to turn the device off.
Put the battery back in then press volume up + home + power buttons and this will bring you to twrp (you will see a prompt telling you to swipe to allow modifications. Swipe to allow!) Then just click reboot for now
That's twrp installed
For Magisk just download the latest stable .zip file
Then reboot into your newly installed twrp (power off the device then press volume up + home + power buttons)
Click install and find the Magisk .zip file in your download folder and swipe to flash.
Job done!
That's the safest and best way as you can flash different firmware and mods and other cool stuff afterwards using twrp

this is probably the most inappropriate way to ask something on XDA but try looking at J5 Prime Development forums.

This is quite old thread but I wanted to ask that; If I left the auto boot on, what would happen?

We know it's a big pain when you forget PIN/Passowrd/Pattern and you simply can't afford to wipe device as you don't have backup.
Then What?
You were all the night busy with your new beast and when you wake up in morning and notice that your GF/BF took revenge by registering and locking device by his/her fingerprint
Then what?
Very simple. Flash attached file from recovery.

thanks it work on my N4 android 4.4.4 N910C
I downloaded this and haven't been able to figure out how to install it.
Does the phone have to be rooted or anything special?
Guess i shouldn't have angered the ex before the break up. oops.
Saved my life...
I had completely lost all the hopes after bad luck with other various ways to bypass the lock screen(Pin Lock). To be honest I didn't expect this to work either. But I was completely taken by surprise. Thanks a ton for this mod. Worked like a charm with my note 2 n7100 with DN4 installed on it.
Thanks, really useful!

Dr. You said to flash the file you created and it would work. I'm sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but I'd rather have the answer then appear like an idiot. Here goes......
I have kies and Odin I cannot figure out how to flash your file using either one of those tools. You mentioned "flashing from recovery" if that's the case how does one do that.
I am able to get Odin to see my phone but it won't do anything with your file
Please Advise I'm miserably frustrated and can't hard reset at the cost of loosing very important files.
Thank you

Recovery menu of your phone. To access recovery. Switch of your phone. Press and hold. Volume up button + home button + power on. After a few seconds release power button but keep balding volume up + home. You'll get into recovery.

Thank you very much!
That is probably the right answer the problem is it didn't work on my note 4. When I got into recovery mode I selected the "SDcard option" and directed it to the folder I downloaded from the good Dr. The folder didn't have anything it was looking for and simply said so.
So I tried going deeper into the folder trying to find anything it would respond to but came up empty. So I tried downloading and installing the ADB app with SDK files and drivers the whole works. By the time I got it all set up apparently the phone has to have debugging turned off before ADB can communicate with my phone. Which of course my phone cannot be accessed because master password is required which I don't have.
I have the PW but it won't accept it. I think It was caused by a conflict with an app I downloaded. Any help or ideas short of doing a complete factory reset, I would really appreciate it. It's evident that starting over May be my only choice. I just can't lose all my information.........I was 24 hrs from backup to.
Warm regards
Doug

Also. If you have left WiFi on it will automatically connect to known WiFi nets. Or insert a simple card w/o pin. If you know the password then either go to find my Samsung or Google remote find phone both need Internet and use one of tho the to change your password and unlock remotely your phone. That is your best chance.
Awesome That Worked...!

I can't thank you enough I was able to reset using the Google device manager as you suggested. It never accured to me that was even available on a phone that was locked. Resetting remotely is a great feature.
I appreciate your patience and your willingness to help me work through the issues. I learned a lot.

1. install custom recovery (CWM) via odin.
2. load this zip file onto a micro sd card ( you cant access the phones storage to load it onto the phone).
3 restart phone in custom recovery
4. select install zip from memory card then restart phone and enjoy.

Once Dr. Ketan's script flashed from recovery will bypass the Lockscreen Security (fingerprintpassword, password, locksetings, personal key, gesture key) the associated security information is gone.
I wonder how the following scenario will work out:
1. What if BEFORE running Dr. Ketan's script the files related to Lockscreen Security are copied to e.g. external SD card - or internal storage - by another script from recovery?
2. Then run Dr. Ketan's script flashed from recovery to bypass the Lockscreen utility.
3. Then access telephone and reboot.
4. Then run another script from recovery to copy back the files of step 1 related to Lockscreen Security to their respective original locations.
QUESTION: Will now the original Lockscreen Security information be active again on the telephone?
So the original fingerprint and other settings of the Lockscreen utility from step 1 are active again on the telephone?
Edit: In the discussion area Dr. Ketan and Mussels84 discuss the use of Nandroid for backing up purposes with problems encountered. I read on forums that Nandroid usage may result in wrong access rights assigned to files involved in Nandroid operations due to oversight of users. Dr. Ketan's script is actually a set of commands. The copy (backup step 1) and copy (restore step 4) actions of my assumption above should be done in the same way as Dr. Ketan's script: with a set of commands and not Nandroid to avoid potential issues. Is ti too easy to think that just a slight adoption to Dr. Ketan's original scrip could do the job?
Cant use fingerprintscanner, and dont know alternate password
Hello,
My phone was in my pocket and something kept touching the fingerprintscanner, because of too many failed attempts my phone got "blocked", I cant use the fingerprint scanner and i dont remember the alternate password. I dont want to do a factory reset because my phone has a lot of valuable data and personal photos.
Does anyone know how i can get the fingerprintscan function to work again or bypass the password screen?

1. Dr. Ketan explains the root non root issue in his thread.
2. I am not sure if a custom recovery will trick the KNOX. I am jsut a junior expert and an afriad to mention wrong information. But to my best (may be wrong/limited knowledge), a custom recovery will not trick the KNOX. But please look for re-affirment from a more expereinced XDA memeber.
Galaxy note 4 lock screen problem
My galaxy note 4 has fingerprint lock screen. and yesterday it didn't recognize my fingerprint. maybe because my fingers are wrinkly that time. My data network is disabled. that is why I try to unlock it using backup password but i forgot my password. I tried many times. and then It only ask me to enter password no other option like fingerprint or log in via google mail. It's too late for me to realize that I can enable my data network even if its locked. Now my problem is I don't really remember my password and I tried so many times. and weird thing is that it says unable to verify your fingerprint 6 times. try again in 30 seconds. which It didn't scan my fingerprint it only ask to enter a password. I restart it a lot of times but nothings happen. Bypass screen lock app from google play is not compatible with note 4. I also tried to change lock on android device manager but it wont let me it said phone is already locked so It doesn't need to be changed.
I don't want to factory reset my phone. I need my files. please help. and It is possible to recover my files after factory reset??
btw. i also did the flashing thing. but I don't know if i did it right. nothings happen. please help me how. what i did was I power off my phone the I press power buton + volume up + home button and It brings me to an options and I choose apply update using external storage. I download the attached file by dr. and put it on my sd card. then I click the zip file there's too error occured then at the end it says complete then the phone restart and nothings happen.

I'm kinda new to this whole XDA developers website (don’t let when I joined fool you) I’ve always heard that the XDA community are very helpful and I am in need of some serious help. I've had my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for quite some time now, but now it has started to crash and slow down I was wondering if rooting it might fix this problem.
If so then how and where do I even begin? Do I even need to root it?
Also if and when I root I want to get rid of all of the bloat ware apps how do I do this?
Please someone teach me I’m willing to learn, so be detailed and dumb it down as much as possible.
I want to say thank ahead of time to anyone that responds! :highfive:
First off, rooting is nothing to be scared off. As long as you have a little bit of knowledge and some common sense it's pretty straight forward.
To root you just need a couple of things, and this will trip knox too if I remember rightly, but if your phone is out of warranty then it doesn't really matter to much.
Firstly you will want odin - this will put the files onto the phone using a PC and USB cable.
Secondly you'll need the .tar file that contains the "root" files. I used CF-Auto-Root by Chain fire.
Head to http://autoroot.chainfire.eu and find the right file for your phone model.
This also contains Odin too.
So unzip the CF-Auto-Root zip file on your PC, and you'll find odin.exe and the CF-Auto-Root.tar.md5 files along with a couple of dll files and an ini file.
Open the odin.exe and you'll have a screen pop up which may look pretty daunting but fear not, it's not bad, it's actually really easy and you'll love it.
Now turn off your phone and once it's completely powered off, hold volume down button, the home button together and then hold the power button. The phone will boot into download mode... You'll see a screen saying to press volume up to continue or cancel by pressing volume down. You'll need to continue so hit volume UP.
Now plug the phone into the PC and wait a few minutes while the drivers are installed. You will notice on the odin program that at the top, a bar has lit up saying "comxxx" (where xxx is will be a number. This is the com port your phone is connected to)
Now comes the bit you need to get right....
Click the PDA or AP button (depending on version of odin) on the right side of odin and then select the CF-Auto-Root.tar.md5 file. It will load it into odin ready to flash across to the phone.... Make sure auto reboot and f reset time are the only boxes checked on the left side.
Now comes the really difficult bit, you need to pay attention here...
Click the "START" button.
Thats pretty much it. The phone will reboot and once it's rebooted, go into your apps and see if supersu is there. If it is just open it up and update the binaries if it asks you to.
Congratulations, your phone is now rooted.
I recommend using a custom recovery like philz or TWRP and make nandroid backups before you do anything else, so if something goes wrong you can always go back and restore.
You can also flash custom roms which may help your phone go fast again. I recommend audax roms or echoe roms.
OMG!! Thank you!!! so simple!!!!! Just a few more questions before I start.
1. What is a "custom recovery" and how do I use it?
2. What are "Custom Roms" for and how do I flash them?
3. What is supersu for? (I've been reading that everywhere)[/B]
4. Do you recommend buying titanium backup?

1. Custom Recovery is a recovery where you can a lot of stuffs which are not supported in stock recovery. Like flashing a zip package to be able to install it, be it a ROM or a small mod or whatever. Then you can take Nandroid backups too from it, along with so many other options.
2. Custom ROMs, same. ROMs which have a lot of customisation ability unlike stock ROMs, some custom ROMs come with some more pre bundled.
3. SuperSU is an app which is a must for rooted devices. It gives administrative level permission to apps, without it you won't be able to run some apps which needs root access. It can be found on Play Store, but better way to install it from a custom recovery after downloading the latest zip package of SuperSU.
4. Yes, very much, that is one of those apps which is a must have for Android.
Also one thing about XDA, when you are thanking someone, just use the Thanks button. I could not care less about it but believe me a lot of people prefer that.

Okidodi here is a complete guide to rooting your S7 Edge:
FULL STEPS FOR OBTAINING ROOT
In your ROM, go to Settings -> About device. Tap 7 times on Build number to enable Developer options.
Now go to Settings -> Developer options. (above About device)
You need to enable OEM unlock, otherwise you might end up with boot problems or be unable to flash later on.
Extract Odin_3.10.7.zip to your computer.
Install Samsung Mobile Phone Drivers for Odin to find your device in windows.
Download a .tar image of TWRP for hero2lte.
Reboot your device into Download mode. To do this, select reboot from the power menu and hold the [Volume Down] + [Home] buttons while your device reboots.
Once you reach the Download mode warning screen, press [Volume Up] to continue.
Open Odin and place that TWRP tar file in the [AP] slot without touching any other options, then press [Start].
Hold [Volume Up] + [Home] buttons near the end of the flash, and keep holding them until you are in recovery.
At this point, you will reach the screen asking you if you want to allow system modifications.
By swiping right, you will trigger dm-verity, and if you don't follow step 11 you will be unable to boot!
If you are going to root your device and follow the rest of these steps, then it is safe to swipe right and enable modifications.
Only if you want internal storage or data to work in TWRP:
Go to [Wipe] -> [Format Data] (not advanced wipe) -> type "yes".
WARNING: This will wipe your internal storage, disable encryption, and factory reset your phone!
Go to [Reboot] -> [Recovery].
If you want to be rooted with SuperSU:
Download the latest SuperSU by Chainfire.
Without exiting TWRP, transfer the SuperSU zip to your device over MTP* and flash it using [Install] in TWRP.
Alternatively, if you only want a bootable system partition or writable data in TWRP:
Download dm-verity and force encryption disabler.
Without exiting TWRP, transfer no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip to your device over MTP* and flash it using [Install] in TWRP.
Go to [Reboot] -> [System].
Wait 5-15 minutes for your device to finish setting itself up.

I too came from the Cydia world and was quite comfortable there. Rooting has always seemed so scary because the instructions i've seen posted has looked shady.
Now, does anyone recommend a ROM or hack I can use to enable mobile hotspot/FoxFi to work on my ATT S7 edge? How would I accomplish this?

Stay on stock but take the newest Firmware (pf2).
Debloat it and have fun with a stable and fast rom.

Use twrp to flash superuser.zip

What model do you have?
in Developer Options turn on OEM unlock and USB debugging. Connect the phone to the PC. Install the latest Samsung mobile drivers on pc. Download the latest Odin tool. Download the latest twrp for the j5 2016 for your model found here, on the J5 XDA forums. Reboot phone in Download mode. Follow a tutorial online on how to flash twrp using ODIN.
After flashing TWRP reboot phone to recovery. On PC download the latest SuperSU.zip by chainfire (i think) and move the zip from the pc to your internal memmory that should be accesible while your phone is in recovery mode.
With the file on your phone, in the twrp menu, select the "install" box by taping on it, select the zip file you just got from your computer, swipe to flash, reboot. You might experience bootloop two times before the phone will restart normally. Everything will be ok after that.
Rooting and TWRP give you imense power over your device so be sure to read a lot about things before screwing with anything. It took me like 7 months of reading about custom roms, android, rooting, under the hood things and more before I even had the knowledge and bravery to try rooting. I did succeed. But it was only the start...

[HELP] I would like to go into developer options but I can not

Hello to all,
first of all sorry for my English, i'm using google translate, I do not know if you can help me here.
I bought this jewel from Gearbest and arrived yesterday.
I would like to unlock the bootloader and root it following this wonderful guide , but I can not get into developer options, I get the error "the settings application crashed abnormally"
I wanted to do this via the toolkit, but in EDL mode the phone is not recognized, maybe because in developer options I have to select the OEM UNLOCK.
The only good thing is that it recognizes usb debugging mode (at least I think) because I see the debug notification icon.
I can not understand where it came from, I went into bootloader mode but did not release me information.
From the onscreen screen I can only provide these info:
model number zte a2017g
version android 6.0.1
kernel version 3.18.20
build number zte a2017gv1.0.0b11
baseband version th.2.0.c1.9-00050-m8996faaaanazm
The MiFlavor version is 4.0
The smartphone does not receive OTA updates. I downloaded the global version (b05) of Nougat, the update with Android started I did not find it (I renamed the rom file in update.zip and put in the root of the SD CARD). I tried through recovery mode but it does not do anything to me, it's as if the smartphone was locked in everything and for everything.
I'm doing well ? How do I update when I download the rom? Can you please help me? Is there any system to interact with this smartphone and unlock it? I do not want to keep a phone that I can not update and root it.
Thanks in advance to who will help.
UPDATE:
I tried to manually install the downloaded ROM, but in recovery mode it does not flash the new rom ... the phone does not even try it !!!
It's as if the phone was locked in everything and I only have to keep the installed rom.
Some idea ?

Hey I would recommend clearing the data for settings if you can. To do this go to your launcher, find the settings icon and either drag or hold down or do whatever it takes to get to the app info. I haven't used stock in a long time so idk. But then go into storage and clear data. Then go and try again.
I do have one question though. How did you get usb adb debugging enabled if you didn't get into developer options at all?
For the second half of your question you won't be able to flash anything without first unlocking the bootloader and flashing TWRP onto the device. For the devices recovery idk which one you meant, but it needs to be TWRP. Good luck!

Thanks to my friend, without doing anything, suddenly, he made me enter the developer options menu.
I've been able to do the rest.
Now I have the phone with unlocked bootloader, root and TWRP installed.
Do not ask me how I got the debug without going into the menu, I could not answer you ... it will remain a mystery !!!
I take advantage of your availability: can I flash the zip of the official ROM through TWRP? Or is there a risk that the phone goes into brick mode?

What rom are you trying to install? Usually you will be absolutely fine.

You can't flash an official zip through TWRP, it will just fail. No brick.
Edit: didn't read OP lol. If you want to update, you have to flash the stock recovery (there are stock recovery flashable zips on the Download Center) then install the update, then get TWRP again. Or you can install a custom ROM (I recommend one based on stock MiFavor 5.0, I think that the best one is ADM Team V3 (the one that's not based on B13), this way you can simply download, flash in TWRP, and you'll be done

Thanks mate !!
I installed the rom that you suggested to me, I find it very good, but this phone has very poor support (MiFavor).

Very poor support? It's going to get Android O, and it's got at least 1 update per month (officially). It's unclear whether that ROM you installed will be updated since it's based on an older version, but the latest (B13) breaks a bunch of stuff like Google Play Games, Maps, the GPS works awfully...

No no ... do not get me wrong.
My reference is to rom, MiFlavor is really bad. I come from 3 Xiaomi smartphones and I can assure you is another world.
The smartphone is really nice and well balanced (apart from the just enough battery) and I would replenish it a thousand times. :fingers-crossed::good:
