[Q] rooting nexus 7 first time

so i recently got the 2012 nexus 7 from my step daughter she wasnt using. i replaced the usb port cause it was messed up. im trying to root it and im following some guides and it says to make sure usb debugging is checked but i cant find it. im on 4.4.4 latest one and cant find it at all anyone shed some light on it please

still cant get the dang thing to root. i got recovery in there and everything but when i go to super user it says no su binary installed

ok i cant find anything can someone point me in right direction ive tried a couple different ones and none work

But here's what you need. I did this with my "virgin" Nexus 7 2012 (virgin by means, it ran over 1 year stock).

But in step 4, instead of CWM, i flashed TWRP recovery, because I like it more. Process remain the same.
But PLEASE ! Read before you attempt to do anything.

I did search for like 3 hours trying to find something that would work with 4.4.4 and never came across this but thank u I'll take a look. I already have it unlocked and clock work instilled but I guess I can't get super user to install. I'm not sure

Rooting the Nexus 7 is a piece of cake... well, I think so anyway.
Essentially, it's a three stage process...two of which you've already accomplished.
1) Unlock the bootloader. Check... YOU'VE DONE!
2) Flash a Custom Recovery. Check... YOU'VE DONE! (ClockWorkMod installed).

3) Using that Custom Recovery, flash ChainFires SuperSU root package. YET TO BE DONE...

Using Chrome (or whatever Android browser you favour) download it directly to your Nexus 7.
Chrome, and most Android browsers, download stuff to the /download folder on your device. Wherever it gets downloaded to, it's important that you take note of it's location.

Next, boot into your Custom Recovery (CWM), as follows...
** Fully shut down the device.
** With your N7 shut down... press & hold the VOL DOWN button... whilst holding, press POWER ON.
** Your N7 should now boot into the bootloader.
** Using either of the volume buttons, cycle through the options until you see the RECOVERY MODE option. Press the Power button to select it.
** Your Nexus 7 should now boot into your Custom Recovery, CWM.
** From the the CWM menu options, select the following...
- install zip
- choose zip from /sdcard
- select 0/ from the menu option
- navigate to the folder where you downloaded the UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.13.zip file to earlier
** Select it, and confirm... YES - Install UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.13.zip.
** Then tap Go Back (at the bottom) followed by Reboot System Now.
** Ignore any 'Fix Root messages'... this is a spurious CWM error message. Ignore it, and just proceed with a reboot.

Your Nexus 7 should now be rooted. ...hopefully...
I've just run this exact procedure on my Nexus 7, and I had no problems at all.
You can check you have root via a plethora of root checking tools available on PlayStore, or just by installing and running Titanium.

I would recommend you to convert to f2fs and use ART.
Try slimkat(all-f2fs) its fast and never slows down even after a month and tons of apps.
For playing around you can try Liquid smooth or Mahdi.

What do I have to do to convert to f2fs? Im so rusty I haven't put a ROM on since galaxy s2

I'm kinda new to this whole XDA developers website (don’t let when I joined fool you) I’ve always heard that the XDA community are very helpful and I am in need of some serious help. I've had my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for quite some time now, but now it has started to crash and slow down I was wondering if rooting it might fix this problem.
If so then how and where do I even begin? Do I even need to root it?
Also if and when I root I want to get rid of all of the bloat ware apps how do I do this?
Please someone teach me I’m willing to learn, so be detailed and dumb it down as much as possible.
I want to say thank ahead of time to anyone that responds! :highfive:

First off, rooting is nothing to be scared off. As long as you have a little bit of knowledge and some common sense it's pretty straight forward.
To root you just need a couple of things, and this will trip knox too if I remember rightly, but if your phone is out of warranty then it doesn't really matter to much.
Firstly you will want odin - this will put the files onto the phone using a PC and USB cable.
Secondly you'll need the .tar file that contains the "root" files. I used CF-Auto-Root by Chain fire.
Head to http://autoroot.chainfire.eu and find the right file for your phone model.
This also contains Odin too.
So unzip the CF-Auto-Root zip file on your PC, and you'll find odin.exe and the CF-Auto-Root.tar.md5 files along with a couple of dll files and an ini file.
Open the odin.exe and you'll have a screen pop up which may look pretty daunting but fear not, it's not bad, it's actually really easy and you'll love it.
Now turn off your phone and once it's completely powered off, hold volume down button, the home button together and then hold the power button. The phone will boot into download mode... You'll see a screen saying to press volume up to continue or cancel by pressing volume down. You'll need to continue so hit volume UP.
Now plug the phone into the PC and wait a few minutes while the drivers are installed. You will notice on the odin program that at the top, a bar has lit up saying "comxxx" (where xxx is will be a number. This is the com port your phone is connected to)
Now comes the bit you need to get right....
Click the PDA or AP button (depending on version of odin) on the right side of odin and then select the CF-Auto-Root.tar.md5 file. It will load it into odin ready to flash across to the phone.... Make sure auto reboot and f reset time are the only boxes checked on the left side.
Now comes the really difficult bit, you need to pay attention here...
Click the "START" button.
Thats pretty much it. The phone will reboot and once it's rebooted, go into your apps and see if supersu is there. If it is just open it up and update the binaries if it asks you to.
Congratulations, your phone is now rooted.
I recommend using a custom recovery like philz or TWRP and make nandroid backups before you do anything else, so if something goes wrong you can always go back and restore.
You can also flash custom roms which may help your phone go fast again. I recommend audax roms or echoe roms.

1. Custom Recovery is a recovery where you can a lot of stuffs which are not supported in stock recovery. Like flashing a zip package to be able to install it, be it a ROM or a small mod or whatever. Then you can take Nandroid backups too from it, along with so many other options.
2. Custom ROMs, same. ROMs which have a lot of customisation ability unlike stock ROMs, some custom ROMs come with some more pre bundled.
3. SuperSU is an app which is a must for rooted devices. It gives administrative level permission to apps, without it you won't be able to run some apps which needs root access. It can be found on Play Store, but better way to install it from a custom recovery after downloading the latest zip package of SuperSU.
4. Yes, very much, that is one of those apps which is a must have for Android.
Also one thing about XDA, when you are thanking someone, just use the Thanks button. I could not care less about it but believe me a lot of people prefer that.

How do I unlock my bootloader?

Hi all, new to Android and Samsung, so sorry for the noob question.. and sorry if its been answered before, Ive done a HEAP of reading and Im still confused...
I recently bought an S4 GT-I9505, thinking that getting into Android and maybe tweaking it a bit would be fun..
This phone was a Warranty replacement for a Telstra "POST Paid" service and has been sitting in a cupboard for a few years, It is NOT network locked. The phone had never been used before I bought it but has since ran out of warranty,,
I can't remember what ver of Android was on the phone when I got it but Its now updated to 5.0.1 and ofcourse has KNOX.. I obviously dont care about KNOX Warranty tripping to 0x1 as its ran out anyway...
My question is though....
Every guide or thread I read about installing custom ROMs and such says "phone must have an UNLOCKED bootloader" ... So how do I "UNLOCK" the bootloader or is this something that happens when flashing a custom ROM? ... What am I missing here guys?

Only few devices have a locked bootloader.
Verizon and AT&T devices have a locked bootloaders.
If you're device is none of the above then you're good to go.

I read somewhere that the international versions weren't locked.. and in another thread I read they said the I9505 is international but on that same thread someone else said that it wasn't international, only the i9500 was,, so that confused me a little...
but on wikipedia the I9505 and I9506 are listed as international.... so if thats the case I definitely should be right hey???
Also because Im from AUS and not much is listed in terms of Australian Service providers.. would it be worth me trying to contact Telstra because its a Telstra "POST Paid" phone and asking if there would be any restrictions on it???

It might at worst have a network/carrier lock on it, but that would be it, no other locks.

I believe post paid phones are unlocked from the word go, but you may want to check...easiest way is to grab a sim from a family member/friend on another carrier and put it in and see if it registers on the network...prolly quicker than waiting on the phone to telstra...only to be told its not locked .

Me im in Aus too, i bought my S5 i9505, a former Telstra S4, a few days back knowing it was unlocked fortunately....took it home and rooted it, debloated it and living happily on the stock 5.01 TouchWiz ROM with TWRP Recovery and Xposed , ill prolly chuck a custom one on at some point....

Would you mind sharing your process on how you rooted it and installed TWRP? Did you use apps or flash from Odin/Heimdal etc,, I know theres heaps of guides and different ways of doing so.... Im just curious on different peoples experiences

Heres what i did on mine, and how i remember doing it, though if some steps dont match up, let me know via PM or email, in my profile:
Required utils/files (assuming you have a standard i9505):
Odin: http://dl.sammobile.com/Odin3-v3.11.1.zip
CF Auto Root: https://download.chainfire.eu/316/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505.zip
TWRP: https://dl.twrp.me/jfltexx/twrp-3.0.2-0-jfltexx.img.tar.html
1) Rooting
a) Put phone into download mode - Power + Home + Vol Down, then Vol Up
b) Connect to PC via cable
c) Run Odin
d) Tick next AP
e) Press AP and browse to locate and select the CF Auto file downloaded
f) Press Start
g) It should upload to phone and phone should reboot into recovery and do its thing and then reboot
h) Unplug the phone form the cable
i) You may get, i did, a Google Play update to update SuperSU. I did this and rebooted, you may also get a prompt to update the su binary, do this using the Normal method, and reboot
2) TWRP
a) Put phone into download mode - Power + Home + Vol Down, then Vol Up
b) Connect to PC
c) Run Odin
d) Tick next AP
e) Press AP and browse to locate and select the TWRP file downloaded
f) Click options, and untick Auto Reboot - if you dont manage to catch the device using the recovery boot keys as it reboots, it may boot normally and over-write the recovery, and you'll have flash it again, so i turned this off
f) Press Start
g) When its uploaded, unplug phone,and hold down Power + Home + Vol Up until it reboots and you see the recovery boot text appear in the top left (lines of blue, yellow, red text), let go at this point, a
the device should boot to recovery and install recovery
h) Unplug the phone form the cable
i) Power down the phone (i got a cache mounting issue - discovered when i was flashing Xposed, that you may need to fix...best to do it anyways, and do it now to fix the issue before you try and flash a custom ROM in the future etc)
j) Boot to recovery again - Power + Home + Vol Up until it reboots and you see the recovery boot text appear in the top left, let go at this point, the device should boot to recovery
k) Go into Mount and see if Cache is mounted, if it is, youre fine, if it isnt, try mounting it by ticking Cache. If it wont mount:
i) Click Wipe,
ii) Click Advanced Wipe
iii) Tick Cache
iiii) Click Repair or Change File System
iv) Click Change Filesystem
v) Click Ext4
vi) Swipe to change
It may take some time to fix....
l)Reboot when done
3) Debloating (highly recommended on the stock ROM)

Hi mate,, just thaught I'd let you know I followed your guide and all was sucsessful, thanks again, I had it running for a while and I really like the stock ROM when unbloated.
Since then I've flashed a Resurrection Remix Marshmallow ROM -ver 5.6.7 and its running well except for a few glitches but nothing serious.
I have a question for you though, if you dont mind... I am planning on getting the latest RR ROM and upgrading to that to see how it runs...
But if I were to downgrade to a Lollipop version of RR, would I be ok flashing it from my current state? I have read somewhere that flashing to an earlier version of Android (Marshmallow to Lollipop) is a bit of a different process?
And also if this were true.... Than when I made a TWRP Backup of my rooted stock 5.0.1 Lollipop before I flashed RR 6.0.1 Marshmallow.. If I were to try now to restore from my backup it wouldn't work? because of the different Android versions?
I have done heaps of reading and can't seem to find a great deal on this... only when it comes to stock ROMs

Im glad that my wonky memories of rooting/twrp and debloating worked out for you. The stock 5.01 ROM is great without the bloat. Ive since moved onto Optimised CM13, which is going well.
Im afraid i cant help you on downgrading from LP to MM, as ive never done it on this device, but i cant see how that would in any way be an issue as you have a custom recovery installed...afaik thats all thats needed...at least on the S2 it was as easy as flash what the hell you want to on it as long as you had at least a KK recovery installed..
Cant help on backups, as i literally never use them, i never carry over stuff from one ROM to the next, i clean install everything

The downgrading is only a problem on stock to stock ROMs. Any combination of custom to stock should work.
And TWRP has a problem with TouchWiz ROM backups. So your backup might not work either.
I mean, it will work, but you get errors.

Samsung S7 Edge is locked - Unlock or Data Extract help? Unique Situation...

Ok guys, new here and I've done a bit of reading on this already. From what I gather, the S7 Edge is difficult if not impossible to unlock without a factory reset. Here's the issue.
This phone belongs to my friend's husband who was severely injured in an accident at work. He's in a coma and probably won't survive. He was severely burned over 90% of his body with chemicals and he has no fingerprints to unlock the fingerprint scanner. In addition, his wife doesn't know his password, so I figured I'd see if I could do anything for her. I tried the Dr. Fone program, but it's apparently incompatible with the S7 Edge. He keeps getting texts and messages and we can't check them. The phone is also set for a daily alarm at 1:30 AM, and apparently you can't power it down without the lock code either. Ideally, I'd like to either gain access for her or at least extract what data we can from the thing before factory resetting it. It would also be nice to power it down so that it doesn't keep putting out an alarm every night in the middle of the night. All his contacts with his family are inconveniently stored in the phone as well. It's kind of a worst case scenario.
Any assistance or recommendations for a course of action for this situation would be fantastic. I don't have any other information on the device itself other than that it's running on Freedom Mobile's network in Ontario, Canada. They've said they can factory reset it for her, but we were trying to avoid that and get any contacts or messages from his phone if possible.

Edit: I managed to power down the phone with the Power Button/Volume Down trick after about 9 tries, so at least the alarm won't go off. Other than that, no luck.

Unique situation? More like fked up situation.
Anyways I am assuming its a completely stock phone with USB debugging turned off. Hope its not carrier locked, if yes then here are the steps:
1. Flash Custom Recovery on the Phone using Odin
2. Use aroma file manager from the Recovery, you need to download it separately, put it on its SD card.
3. Now using aroma file manager navigate to Data Folder and then; System Folder and find “gesture.key” or “password.key” for pattern lock or password lock respectively.
4. Delete those any password related file and reboot. It should be unlocked now.

I'm looking at Odin and the Recovery firmware right now. Is there a recommended version? I see TWRP and CWM, but primarily TWRP mentioned, and it looks like the .tar files are easy to find. I'm pretty new to this type of mod and I don't want to brick the phone, I know it's a risk. I'm looking at faqs on theandroidsoul and the cyanogenmods forum which seem quite thorough. Apparently I can't post the links as I'm a new user here....seems fair I suppose, especially considering the forum content.

Is there any way to tell if it's carrier locked? It's from a small phone company, not one of the bigger guys. I'm going to wait until I hear back to get started on this, as I'm decent with Windows based systems, but unfamiliar with the nuances of modding Android. I use a stock Sony XZ Premium myself.

Anyways I am assuming its a completely stock phone with USB debugging turned off. Hope its not carrier locked, if yes then here are the steps:
1. Flash Custom Recovery on the Phone using Odin
2. Use aroma file manager from the Recovery, you need to download it separately, put it on its SD card.
3. Now using aroma file manager navigate to Data Folder and then; System Folder and find “gesture.key” or “password.key” for pattern lock or password lock respectively.
4. Delete those any password related file and reboot. It should be unlocked now.

Use odin 3.13 the latest
Then download twrp recovery 3.2.2.0 tar file for hero2lte the latest.
Boot your phone into odin mode by restarting your phone while holding power home button and vol down. When your reach the confirmation screen press OK.
Open odin and put the tar file in the ap slot and click the ap box and hit start to begin flashing.
Now restart ur phone by holding power home and vol down then immediately hold power home vol up to reach custom recovery.

Flash the zip file from this thread no need to go looking for files in system.

Should remove password pin or pattern.
To check if it's network locked just look at the back of your phone if it says 935u or Verizon wireless or 935W8 then the phone is unlocked for different networks.

Just look at back of your phone and tell me its model, Like G935F. I will give you the correct recovery file. And recoveries have option to enable storage too so you can access data from computer. But to be honest it never worked for me. You could also give it a try before doing other steps.
You could contact on PM, or even better I could also help you over whatsapp if you wish.
And I never heard that you could brick phone by flashing recovery, maybe only if you flash incorrectly. A bad recovery will make recovery useless, but phone would still boot. Thats my experience.
I have broken password before of a Mediatek device. If you want I could try it on my own S7 Edge too to be 100% sure.

Hey alright no problem.
Download TWRP for G935W8 from official TWRP website:

You can follow some instructions from this thread regarding flashing:

Flashing TWRP might cause your phone to not boot. You will need to download dm-verity disabler from the thread above.
So download TWRP, Aroma file manager, dm-verity bypass, and zip file to disable pass that the other user posted: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2780696
Download all these files and put aroma file manager, dm-verity bypass and that password zip file bypass on your SD.
Make sure auto reboot is disabled in odin, follow instruction in thread about how to install twrp. If the auto reboot is disabled, phone will just remain at the same screen, so after the flashing is done from odin. You need to force reboot on your phone (volume down + power button for few seconds), just when the screen goes off, you need to immediately press recovery button combination (vol up + home + power). Here once you enter TWRP recovery see if you can enable MTP and trasnfer data to PC, if not, goto install zip and try password bypass zip file. If it works file then ok and proceed to install dm-verity bypass file and reboot your phone. If that zip doesn't works. You need to go to same install zip file option and now install aroma file manager. From there delete the password files that I told you about earlier, flash dm-verity and reboot again.
Thats it, if get confused about a step, tell me.

Well, I attempted to install TWRP through the latest version of Odin, but it didn't work. The error message I got in Recovery/Download mode was:
"Custom Binary (RECOVERY) Blocked By FRP Lock."
I looked that up online and apparently to install TWRP, I need to remove the FRP lock. I found a program called RealTerm which can supposedly bypass the FRP lock, but it doesn't seem to be connecting to the locked phone and it's not exactly user friendly.
Am I missing something here? Or is there no way to bypass the FRP lock on the unit?

Newbie-friendly: TWRP and Root for Samsung S3 Tablet

Tested SM-T820, for Android O. It is reported that it works for Android P as well, with small modification (see below).
This post is designed to gather information found across this forum to give a step-by-step guide for obtaining a custom recovery TWRP and Root (via Magisk) for the Samsung S3 tablets running Android O. This process works if you are upgrading or staying with Oreo. [If you wish to run Android N, there is a slightly different process.] This process will wipe the contents of the tablet, so make backups as appropriate.
Credit to the software authors, original post creators (especially ashxy) and all those who contributed to the discussions to clarify all the issues. Most of the specifics below were hammered out in https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...recovery-twrp-3-1-0-1-samsung-galaxy-t3581359.
WARNING Flashing a custom recovery to your device will trip the Knox warranty bit on your phone. Check with your mobile provider to see if they will still cover warranty on Knox bit triggered devices. If you understand this risk, continue on. You generally don't have to worry, as it's incredibly hard to brick a Samsung device, and physical damage warranties should be exempt from Knox triggering. [credit: jcadduono]
The below instructions are for Android O (Oreo). User BenG7 reports (I have not verified) that the same process, with slight modification, will work for Android P (Pie). See posts #38 and #39 for those modified instructions.
1. DOWNLOAD
a. ODIN​https://samsungodin.com/ (I used 3.13.1)​b. Samsung USB Drivers​https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy/others/android-usb-driver-for-windows​c. Original firmware​Search for SM-T820 and download latest version 8.X at http://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model​d. TWRP​At some point, it will likely find an official version at https://twrp.me/Devices/. For now, grab the latest beta version at https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...recovery-twrp-3-1-0-1-samsung-galaxy-t3581359​e. Magisk​Get the latest stable Magisk version from https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445​f. 2. PREPERATION
a. While running your tablet in Android, go to Settings -> About device. Tap 7 times on Build number to enable Developer options. [credit: jcadduono]​b. Now go to Settings -> Developer options. You need to enable OEM unlock, otherwise you might end up with boot problems or be unable to flash later on. Do not ever turn off Developer Options or OEM unlock. Doing so will cause your device to refuse to boot and require a full factory restore. [credit: jcadduono]​c. Turn off your tablet.​d. Get a micro SD card​e. Copy Magisk and oreo encryption disabler onto microSD card​f. Install microSD card into Tablet​g. Install Samsung USB Drivers on Windows machine​h. Unzip ODIN (1a) and Original firmware (1c) on your Windows computer​i. While tablet is off, plug in usb cable between tablet and Windows computer​​3. REFLASH ORIGINAL FIRMWARE (Optional if your tablet is already running Oreo)
a. Enter Download mode, press and hold Home, Down Vol, and Power until you see the Warning screen of the downloader mode. Press Vol up to continue​b. Open up ODIN, confirm that ODIN can see your tablet. We will fill in three files for flashing. Click AP button on Odin. In popup, select AP_[blah blah].tar.md5 (whatever AP file you downloaded in step 1c). After selecting the file, Odin will check the signature of the file you downloaded and appear to freeze up. Let it finish, and it will report: <OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully.. <OSM> Leave CS.. In a similar way, fill in the BL and the CSC files. As these are much smaller, the signature checks will go much faster. [Use the CSC file, not the HOME_CSC file, in the CSC slot. This will completely erase your data on the tablet, which minimizes the likelihood of future problems. You will be erasing all of the /data partition later, so there is no point in saving your data now by using the HOME_CSC file.]​c. Make sure that in the options, Auto Reboot is selected. Then click Start. The screen of the tablet should show a progress bar as your tablet is being restored to its original firmware.​d. At this point, your tablet will reboot into the default recovery mode, with a full blue screen and an android figure with the spinning arrows. The tablet will then self reboot again (perhaps more than once). After a while, you will be greeted with the Welcome screen where you can select your language. Be patient.​e. Power off the tablet using the power button​​4. FLASH TWRP
a. Enter Download mode (press and hold Home, Down Vol, and Power) until you see the Warning screen of the downloader mode. Press Vol up to continue​b. (Re) Open up ODIN, confirm that ODIN can see your tablet,​c. Important We do not want the tablet to automatically reboot after installing TWRP. If the tablet does reboot into Android before completing the steps in Section 4 and 5, there is a good chance the stock recovery will overwrite TWRP. So click the Options tab on the left and deselect Auto Reboot. After doing that, click the Log tab so you can monitor progress​d. Click AP button on Odin. In popup, select twrp-[blah blah].img.tar (downloaded in step 1d), but make sure that the BL and CSC slots are unchecked, i.e. we will only be flashing an AP file this time. Then click Start. You will see the progress bar on your tablet. Watch the log window of Odin and wait for the message "<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)"​​5. ENTER TWRP AND CONFIGURE
a. At this point, from the last section, you should still be in Download mode on the tablet. It is important that, after flashing TWRP, to go straight to TWRP without letting the Android System reboot. To do this, Hold [Volume Down] + [Home] + [Power] to get out of Download mode and immediately swap to [Volume Up] (while still holding [Home] + [Power]) when the screen blanks. [credit: jcadduono]​b. In a few secs, you will see the TWRP first screen, you can let go of all the buttons.​c. If you don't see then TWRP boot splash try again from the start of 4. FLASH TWRP.​d. Swipe to Allow Modifications. (For some reason, TWRP has some issues with the touchscreen for some tablets. If you experience this, expect to make several swipes or taps until it properly registers. You have succeeded when you see the classic 8-button main screen of TWRP.)​e. Click Wipe then Format Data (do not just Wipe data), type yes and let it complete. Then click back until you get to the 8-button main screen of TWRP.​f. Click the Mount button. Select Storage button, and confirm that the Internal Storage shows non-zero MB. If it is, you know that the /data partition is now mounted properly. However, since we put the needed install files on the microSD, go ahead and select Micro SD Card as our storage. Click Back until you are back at the 8-button main screen.​g. Click the Install button, install the Magisk zip file you downloaded in step 1e and copied to your microSD. Once finished, click Back to get back to the install screen (do not reboot yet).​h. Install the oreo encryption disabler zip file from step 1f. When it completes, you can press the Reboot System button and let your tablet reboot into Android. You can also disconnect the usb cable connecting the tablet from the computer. The tablet may reboot itself once or twice, let it do its thing, and eventually you will see the Samsung Welcome! Screen, where you can select your language.​​6. CONFIRM DATA ACCESS IN TWRP
a. Before going into configuring your tablet, go ahead and turn off the tablet and re-enter TWRP (Home, Vol up, Power).​b. *Important* Since you will not be changing your system partition, this time, when you get to the "Keep System Read only?" screen, click the Keep Read Only button.​c. In the 8-button screen of TWRP, click Mount, click Select Storage. Confirm that the Internal Storage is greater than zero MB. If it is, congratulations, you have TWRP installed with /data mounted.​d. Reboot to System​​7. FUTURE USE OF TWRP
a. Unless you are planning to make changes to the System, continue to choose the Read Only System when you return to TWRP.​B. [NOT YET TESTED]If you need to make changes to System, e.g. flash a new ROM, go back to Step 5 and install the ROM just before Step 5g​​
8. Click the Thanks button if my guide helped you.

Good guide. In 5, a, at least for the t-820 and if assume other variants, you can hold power, vol up, and home until it boots to recovery. You don't need to hold the keys to boot the bootloader and then quickly switch to the vol up. It's a little easier for me to do it that way.

I would flash magisk *after* flashing a new ROM, i.e. install the ROM just before Step 5g.
Btw, I installed TWEAKED for T820 by @rorymc928 which comes already with encryption disabler.

Already asked but it SEEMS not possible because SuperSu was discountinued. But somebody has successfully installed it on Oreo 8.

I am new to rooting my Tab s3 so pardon me if any of my questions are redundant. I will be following the directions from post "Newbie-friendly: TWRP and Root for Samsung S3 Tablet". Can someone please confirm the following for me before I root -
1. I am running on the most recent firmware T820XXU2BRL1, do I need to complete process #3 REFLASH ORIGINAL FIRMWARE?
2. After I complete root process will my Tab s3 automatically be set to recognize SD Card as internal storage or will I need to complete another setting or process? This is my main reason to rooting.
3. Second reason is to remove bloatware. Does anyone know of a post advising which bloatware on Tab s3 to remove safely and which ones to leave alone?
4. After completing root process following directions from post "Newbie-friendly: TWRP and Root for Samsung S3 Tablet" has anyone experienced any Tab s3 functions or app not working properly? Is USB-OTG working?

Great post. Im having an issue. With my tab s3. Yesterday i was updating magisk manager and after i did it stopped charging. I thought my charger came unplugged but it didnt. Now the only way i can charge it is to put it in twrp and let it charge. But its unresponsive when its powered on and when its off it just loops the charging screen. But wont charge. I jave tried to revert back to a previous back up but had no luck. I was plannig on flashing stock firmware when i get back to my computer.. but any input would be greatly appreciated..

I don't know why your tab won't charge. Updating magisk should be totally unrelated to charging. Did you have any magisk modules that would have modified charging parameters?

I had the sony framework module installed for ps4 remote play. But that was it. I cant figure it out.

Quick question. I'm already on the latest firmware, my bootloader is unlocked so can I just run Odin, flash twrp and then any pre-rooted Rom? Or do I need to follow all these steps? It's been awhile since I've flashed anything and just want to make its done properly. TIA

That's correct.

Is that the only drawback?

On reboot I got: Verification Failed, Unable to restart your device. The Integrity verification has failed. You need to reset your device to factory default settings. This will erase all your data.
Now what?
UPDATE: Oh I see, I totally skipped e. "Click Wipe then Format Data". Now it's fixed and working properly. Now to remove some bloatware.

Altough not yet officially available for my country, I downloaded the version for the Netherlands (PHN-T825XXU3CSH9-20190909091851) from the SamFrew-site [https://samfrew.com/nl/download/Galaxy__Tab__S3__/evss/PHN/T825XXU3CSH9/T825PHN3CSH8/[/URL] . As one can anyway customize languages, etc., no problem.
Then I followed your guide step by step.
I added BusyBox, latest version from XDA developers []https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1929852 as last step, in 5. g
Altough written for OREO, all this steps work perfectly well on my Android PIE !
Including the use of the Ashxy's oreo encryption disabler of point 1.f
(I didn't find a similar disabler for Android Pie yet... Someone a better idea ?)
Rootchecker confirms that I have Root access and that BusyBox is indeed installed.

Thanks for the update! Just wondering, why did you add busybox and XDA developers at the end of step 5g? XDA developers could have been installed as a standard app once the tablet is up and running, no?
Why manually installing BusyBox at this point of the setup?
