How do I unlock my bootloader? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, new to Android and Samsung, so sorry for the noob question.. and sorry if its been answered before, Ive done a HEAP of reading and Im still confused...
I recently bought an S4 GT-I9505, thinking that getting into Android and maybe tweaking it a bit would be fun..
This phone was a Warranty replacement for a Telstra "POST Paid" service and has been sitting in a cupboard for a few years, It is NOT network locked. The phone had never been used before I bought it but has since ran out of warranty,,
I can't remember what ver of Android was on the phone when I got it but Its now updated to 5.0.1 and ofcourse has KNOX.. I obviously dont care about KNOX Warranty tripping to 0x1 as its ran out anyway...
My question is though....
Every guide or thread I read about installing custom ROMs and such says "phone must have an UNLOCKED bootloader" ... So how do I "UNLOCK" the bootloader or is this something that happens when flashing a custom ROM? ... What am I missing here guys?
Thanks in advance
kingsdene

Only few devices have a locked bootloader.
Verizon and AT&T devices have a locked bootloaders.
If you're device is none of the above then you're good to go.

Hi thanks for your reply,,
That clrears things up a bit,,
I read somewhere that the international versions weren't locked.. and in another thread I read they said the I9505 is international but on that same thread someone else said that it wasn't international, only the i9500 was,, so that confused me a little...
but on wikipedia the I9505 and I9506 are listed as international.... so if thats the case I definitely should be right hey???
Also because Im from AUS and not much is listed in terms of Australian Service providers.. would it be worth me trying to contact Telstra because its a Telstra "POST Paid" phone and asking if there would be any restrictions on it???

It might at worst have a network/carrier lock on it, but that would be it, no other locks.
See here for info/fees: https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/phone_unlocking
I believe post paid phones are unlocked from the word go, but you may want to check...easiest way is to grab a sim from a family member/friend on another carrier and put it in and see if it registers on the network...prolly quicker than waiting on the phone to telstra...only to be told its not locked .
Here you go, more info:
http://www.acma.gov.au/theACMA/engage-blogs/engage-blogs/Telco/The-key-to-unlocking-your-mobile
Me im in Aus too, i bought my S5 i9505, a former Telstra S4, a few days back knowing it was unlocked fortunately....took it home and rooted it, debloated it and living happily on the stock 5.01 TouchWiz ROM with TWRP Recovery and Xposed , ill prolly chuck a custom one on at some point....

1) Rooting
a) Put phone into download mode - Power + Home + Vol Down, then Vol Up
b) Connect to PC via cable
c) Run Odin
d) Tick next AP
e) Press AP and browse to locate and select the CF Auto file downloaded
f) Press Start
g) It should upload to phone and phone should reboot into recovery and do its thing and then reboot
h) Unplug the phone form the cable
i) You may get, i did, a Google Play update to update SuperSU. I did this and rebooted, you may also get a prompt to update the su binary, do this using the Normal method, and reboot
2) TWRP
a) Put phone into download mode - Power + Home + Vol Down, then Vol Up
b) Connect to PC
c) Run Odin
d) Tick next AP
e) Press AP and browse to locate and select the TWRP file downloaded
f) Click options, and untick Auto Reboot - if you dont manage to catch the device using the recovery boot keys as it reboots, it may boot normally and over-write the recovery, and you'll have flash it again, so i turned this off
f) Press Start
g) When its uploaded, unplug phone, and hold down Power + Home + Vol Up until it reboots and you see the recovery boot text appear in the top left (lines of blue, yellow, red text), let go at this point, a
the device should boot to recovery and install recovery
h) Unplug the phone form the cable
i) Power down the phone (i got a cache mounting issue - discovered when i was flashing Xposed, that you may need to fix...best to do it anyways, and do it now to fix the issue before you try and flash a custom ROM in the future etc)
j) Boot to recovery again - Power + Home + Vol Up until it reboots and you see the recovery boot text appear in the top left, let go at this point, the device should boot to recovery
k) Go into Mount and see if Cache is mounted, if it is, youre fine, if it isnt, try mounting it by ticking Cache. If it wont mount:
i) Click Wipe,
ii) Click Advanced Wipe
iii) Tick Cache
iiii) Click Repair or Change File System
iv) Click Change Filesystem
v) Click Ext4
vi) Swipe to change
It may take some time to fix....
l)Reboot when done
3) Debloating (highly recommended on the stock ROM)
Theres a few pages on which apps and files to remove using a root uninstaller app, or you can Install this and tick the items you want removed: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.adamioan.s4lollipopdebloater&hl=en
Please dont ask me what to tick or leave ticked Theres descriptions in the app, or more info on the forums. Personally i tend to decimate ROM's from all non-essential apps, but what works for me may not work for you, you may use things i dont.
When done, reboot
Optional though recommended: Boot into recovery and wipe your dalvik & cache (note: once Dalvik is wiped your next reboot will be long due to app optimising - it will be shorter than normal with less apps though)
Hope this helps

Hi mate,, just thaught I'd let you know I followed your guide and all was sucsessful, thanks again, I had it running for a while and I really like the stock ROM when unbloated.
Since then I've flashed a Resurrection Remix Marshmallow ROM -ver 5.6.7 and its running well except for a few glitches but nothing serious.
I have a question for you though, if you dont mind... I am planning on getting the latest RR ROM and upgrading to that to see how it runs...
But if I were to downgrade to a Lollipop version of RR, would I be ok flashing it from my current state? I have read somewhere that flashing to an earlier version of Android (Marshmallow to Lollipop) is a bit of a different process?
And also if this were true.... Than when I made a TWRP Backup of my rooted stock 5.0.1 Lollipop before I flashed RR 6.0.1 Marshmallow.. If I were to try now to restore from my backup it wouldn't work? because of the different Android versions?
I have done heaps of reading and can't seem to find a great deal on this... only when it comes to stock ROMs
Cheers

Im glad that my wonky memories of rooting/twrp and debloating worked out for you. The stock 5.01 ROM is great without the bloat. Ive since moved onto Optimised CM13, which is going well.
Im afraid i cant help you on downgrading from LP to MM, as ive never done it on this device, but i cant see how that would in any way be an issue as you have a custom recovery installed...afaik thats all thats needed...at least on the S2 it was as easy as flash what the hell you want to on it as long as you had at least a KK recovery installed..
Cant help on backups, as i literally never use them, i never carry over stuff from one ROM to the next, i clean install everything

The downgrading is only a problem on stock to stock ROMs. Any combination of custom to stock should work.
And TWRP has a problem with TouchWiz ROM backups. So your backup might not work either.
I mean, it will work, but you get errors.

[Q] Recovery Manual Mode Red Exclamation Mark?

Hi,
I have the Galaxy S4 i9505 and having issues with trying to root the device. So after reading tons of posts over the last few days with regards to rooting I think I have finally worked out what I need to do and have all relevent files required (Odin, CWM etc).
So I went to put the phone into recovery mode by using the vol+ menu and power button but instead of getting the flashing custom roms warning message and press vol+ to continue it loads to a manual recovery with several options and an icon of dead android icon with a red exclamation mark.
The phone is brand new, not done any rooting on it before, the only thing I did was use KIES to update the phone.
Currently running Kernal 3.4.0-526204, Build I9505XXUAME2.
I'm not a complete noob when it comes to rooting android, have messed with a crappy MOMO9 tablet rooting and flashing different custom roms however this is a little different as this phone costs 10 times as much lol, I've also come over from iphone 4 which used to jailbreak etc.
I have done alot of searching and found guides for other devices, just not sure it will work on my version and brick the phone. Can anyone maybe point me in the right direction or know of a guide to help me resolve this problem.
Many Thanks

For preparing your phone for Odin for flashing, you should be putting your phone in download mode (volume down, power and home button). This will display the custom ROM warning message, and you press the up volume key to put it in download mode. I'll assume this is what you're trying to do? Then the usual kill all Kies related processes, plug your phone in, wait till odin identifies it, then proceed to flash your file.
P. S. What guide are you following to root your device?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
I'm not sure
Hi,
I used a guide from galaxys4root.com I think, as luck would have it my pc crashed just after writing the orig post and my history/recover webpage didnt work, happy days. Its ok I like a challenge, think it helps with learning, wouldnt learn anything if it went right all the time.
I have made a little progress, I tried both vol + and vol -, both put me into manual recovery with dead android logo (i meant to put vol - in my previous post not vol +) Just incase I had a bad upgrade from XXUAMDD to XXUAME2 I reflashed the update using KIES and tried again. This time I was able to go into download mode and managed to get CWM v6.0.3.2 flashed and was able to boot to that using vol + no problem.
Now I have an issue with SuperSU failing to update the binary, I used CWM to load a file called "CWM-SuperSU-v0.99.zip" which I suspect is not correct for my current version so its back to searching for me. Trying to get my head round all the different versions of S4 etc and what works on which device.

Hey-
First you should flash a stock rom namely XXUAME2.
Than try this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2238442
That recovery is stable and reliable. The CWM-Recovery is currently not fully bug-free.
I think SU is included in TWRP, so you don't have to worry about that.
After you've done that, you can flash any custom rom for the GT-I9505.
My recommendation is OMEGA 3.1 and the ADAM-KERNEL 1.3.1+
All that stuff you can find here.on xda.
Good luck -
Your SU 0.99 is too old and doesn't fit at all.
Getting there
Hi,
Thanks for tips and pointing me in the right direction. I have since downloaded a couple of ROM's, both pre-rooted to get a better understanding of things, at present i'm running [ROM][ME2][31May] FoxHound GearEngine 0.1 Stable | Themed | Smooth | Clean | Hybrid. Its way faster than stock rom and quite impressive.
I'm still trying to understand why so much memory is taken up by the OS, i understand it has something to do with TouchWhiz or something. I now need to look into running apps from the sd card if this possible, I know its not with standard rom and un-rooted device.
I actually got both S4 and HTC One as I have two contracts with t-mobile ready for upgrade, I have since sent the HTC One back to have it replaced with another S4 as the wife also prefers the S4 over the HTC One, not to say its not a good phone as its amazing, the main selling point for me was the ability to upgrade memory with SD Card.
Hopefully I can get back into this again and maybe start creating roms again, i used to create them for the older HTC windows phones, mainly TYTNII and touch.

[SGH-i257m][ROOT] A Newbs Guide To Rooting & Modding the CANADIAN S4 Mini

Hey There!!
Just a little guide I threw together for all the new CANADIAN SGH-i257m S4 Mini owners out there who are looking to join the world of modded Androids
I found it quite difficult to track all the info down on Google over the last couple of weeks and have yet to find a CLEAR guide as to how to go about modding this specific model of phone, and unlocking its true potential so I figured I'd throw one up on here since everyone has been so helpful, so here it is!
* If anyone notices anything wrong or changes I need let me know!*
*Disclaimer*
First off I would like to say that I in NO WAY had anything to do with developing ANY of these methods that I am about to explain here, they are property of their respective owners, I am just placing them in a clear order for new users to follow so if anyone has any issues with this please let me know and i will fix it ASAP!
I also assume that you have backed up all of your contacts ETC on the phone to either the sim card or google or something. Its always safer to start from scratch and restore a backup right?
Also, PLEASE READ THE WHOLE GUIDE, and ANY linked posts. They have some good answers to a lot of peoples issues with rooting and whatnot
WARNING:
!*!*!*!THE METHODS EXPLAINED BELOW DO TRIP THE KNOX 0X1 WARRANTY FLAG!*!*!*!
If you are at all afraid of tripping the flag and voiding your warranty the please DO NOT continue as I, nor anyone else here are responsible for ANY damage or warranty issues you may run into after this. You are still able to flash a STOCK ROM back onto the phone but the 0x1 flag will always be there.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
Another thing I should mention is that although these posts/files are technically for the GT-i9195(LTE) model, I have tested this on my personal phone (SGH-i257m) and I assure you it works GREAT with no problems if you follow the instructions given.
If you DONT want CyanogenMod 11 and want to roll with the stock ROM, you can refer to THIS post. Just follow the instructions as if your phone is the GT-i9195

The recovery and ROM's for the 9195 should work just fine on it. The only thing is that the model number will be set as GT-I9195. However, in latest CM11 nightlies I've added a routine which will identify which variant it is, and it will set the model number accordingly.

HERES HOW TO INSTALL CyanogenMod 11 and recovery-clockwork on your SGH-i257m:
Heres the Original Post By arco68 if your interested!
1.You need to download 4 files to your computer (linked below) and move gapps and CM 11 over to your phones internal storage
Odin 3.09
gapps version 20140105
recovery-clockwork-6.0.4.6-serranoltexx.tar.md5 extracted on your pc (YOU MUST USE THIS RECOVERY TO FLASH CM 11) just download it from that post
CyanogenMod 11 Nightly LTE VERSION
!!MAKE SURE YOU GET THE LATEST ABOVE VERSION OF CYANOGEN! IT IS THE GT-I9195 VERSION AND IS REQUIRED FOR YOUR PHONE TO WORK PROPERLY!! YOU MAY BRICK YOUR PHONE OTHERWISE
Now the fun part! After you have installed Odin and extracted recovery-clockwork-6.0.4.6-serranoltexx.tar.md5 somewhere on your pc :
2. Turn off the phone.
-Press and hold home, volume down and power. A "Download" screen should appear (a big yellow triangle, youll know when you see it)
-Connect your USB cable, and press volume up to continue.
-Start Odin, and uncheck "F. Reset Time", and then click AP button.
-Select "recovery-clockwork-6.0.4.6-serranoltexx.tar.md5" file that you previously downloaded and extracted, and press Start button (Odin might seem like it hung up when you first load the file but just let it do its thing!! It eventually let you press start). The phone will reboot when finished.
-After the phone resets (it wil vibrate) IMMEDIATELY hold volume up and home buttons to boot into recovery mode. if you miss it dont worry you can always try again.
3. Once your in recovery your going to want to wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache
4. Now choose install from sdcard and navigate to the files we put on there earlier, and install cm-11
5. When that is complete install gapps the same way you installed cm-11
6. REBOOT PHONE AND PROFIT!
Thats basically it people. After that is HIGHLY suggest going and reading the ORIGINAL posts where i got all of this info from, so you can be familiar yourselves Feel free to post any feedback or questions and ill get back to you ASAP!
Enjoy your new rooted and amazingly awesome SGH-i257m
SIDE NOTES:
1.Be sure to use the built in updater for Cyanogen! I have it set to check for updates DAILY (because its still in daily duuuuh ) and everything will work beautifully!
2.I DO NOT recommend restoring your apps data etc from your old rom using google backups, as it re-installs ALL the bloatware that is removed when you install CM11. Instead use an app like AppBak to give you a list of what you had so you can choose

The guide looks pretty much set just you might want to start your thread title with something like [SGH-I257M].
You can also mention which of the two ROMs you used and have tested with and if possible just inform readers to use that one (arco68 did mention that the GT-I9195 was the one that the SGH-I257M is identical to and not the GT-I9190) to avoid confusion.
Cheers!

Just follow the instructions as if your phone is the GT-i9195
HERES HOW TO INSTALL CyanogenMod 11 and recovery-clockwork on your SGH-i257m:

You should help these folks that stumble upon this from google as well to show them how to unlock the phone to use in the States on ATT or Tmobile. When I unlocked mine I used the regionlockaway app after rooting using the s4 mini rootkit and was on stock rom. Was painless and smooth. Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470551
Also you could inform them that all lte roms work for our phone as in 9195 roms. BUT there kernels DO NOT work.
And just another thing about roms, Cyanogenmod is a basic AOSP with very little customizbility, Liquidsmooth is the best option for AOSP on our phones, Ive always hated basic cyanogenmod builds link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2676053 and also ive never liked clockworkmod recoveries as well lol.. we have twrp touchscreen recovery as an option on our phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2589011
EDIT: also if anyone is looking for stock rom firmwares to flash to odin they can be found here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ by searching for i257m and picking which carrier you want.

They do but then they get identified as a 9195 and we lose features that are I257M exclusive.

And what features are those? I thought we gained not lost,FM radio wasn't an option stock and it is after 9195 roms
Is this confirmed to be working on MK5? And does MI3 have KNOX installed or is it the MK5 update that installs it? Thanks in advance

There are some S4 features such as the smart stay and some of the gestures that was put into the I257M and I haven't seen a 9195 rom with those in it. The radio is nice if you use it.

I do believe that MI3 has KNOX but there is something in Mk5 that makes it harder to get around.

Being completely new to the technical aspects of this phone i wanted some clarification on the details. I did some more research and asked a bunch of questions of ExiLeX420. He very graciously answered in detail. Thank you ExiLeX420. I incorporated the results as some Notes and Explanations into his original post and reproduced it here. Hope this helps, especially others who are new like me!
As i post this i have not done this procedure yet myself. I have been having a technical problem requiring that i return the phone for repair. Once that process is settled, or my warranty runs out, then i will consider doing this myself.
Note:
The phone is rooted once you INSTALL CM11 (arco has it pre rooted for you), but the KNOX flag is tripped when you flash the custom recovery-clockwork-6.0.4.6-serranoltexx.tar.md5 onto the phone using Odin. Once you do this there is no going back! As soon as ANYTHING on the inside of the phone is modified via something other than Samsung it gets set to 0x1.
Before beginning do the following ...
Save your contacts to an external SD card
Download the stock i257m ROM from Sammobile. The link is at the end of this note. The stock ROM is actually very good to have because it allows you to start FRESH. Yes the KNOX flag will always be tripped, but it DOES allow you to get updates once you flash the stock ROM back onto the phone using Odin. But there is no need to update as CM11 runs on 4.4.
If you would like a list of all the apps on your phone then install AppBak and run it before proceeding with step 1 of the guide below. That way you'll have a list of all the apps you had if you want them back. The program even links them in the play store. Just run it again after finishing step 6 below to restore your apps. OTOH, if you have only a few apps to transfer over just write down a list and re-download/install them fresh.
====================
1.You need to download 4 files to your computer (linked below), and move gapps and CM 11 over to your phones storage - you could in theory use the internal storage but for the sake of this just use the external sd card.
Odin 3.09
gapps version 20140105
recovery-clockwork-6.0.4.6-serranoltexx.tar.md5 extracted on your pc (YOU MUST USE THIS RECOVERY TO FLASH CM 11) just download it from that post
CyanogenMod 11 Nightly LTE VERSION
Notes:
gapps is a version of the google play store that works with CM 11 and allows you to download apps regularly, as if the phone wasn't modded.
Extracting the md5 from the zip is simple - just double click the zip and out comes the md5.
We are using the Nightly version of CyanogenMod rather than a release Candidate or even a Stable version because according to arco68 "the SGH-I257M ... in latest CM11 nightlies I've added a routine which will identify which variant it is, and it will set the model number accordingly. It sets the model number properly so you retain all of the features the phone comes with originally".

-After the phone resets (it wil vibrate) IMMEDIATELY hold volume up and home buttons to boot into recovery mode. if you miss it dont worry you can always try again.
Note:
If you miss you don't have to do ALL of the above steps over; you just have to boot into recovery using the volume up and home buttons. Just keep the phone in your hand and wait for it to reboot and vibrate, and when it does hold the power, home, and volume up buttons and you'll get into recovery.
3. Once your in recovery your going to want to wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache.
Note:
This step is done to delete all the old data left from the stock ROM so nothing conflicts with CM11. Use this method ...
Turn your Galaxy S4 mini OFF.
Simultaneously press and hold the Volume Up + Home + Power buttons on your device until the logo appears, then release.
Once Android system recovery loads, use the volume buttons to navigate to ”Wipe data/Factory reset” and the power button to select it.
Confirm your choice by selecting “Yes”.
Select “Reboot System Now”.
There are separate options to Wipe Data/Factory Reset and Wipe Cache.
4. Now choose install from sdcard and navigate to the files we put on there earlier, and install cm-11
5. When that is complete install gapps the same way you installed cm-11
6. REBOOT PHONE AND PROFIT!

Just for everyone using ATT model. This doesn't work for the Samsung SGH-I257 ATT model.

Stuck on Recovery Boot Loop after Rooting

Hello there,
I am having a little bit of an issue with a new Galaxy Note 4 that i got for my wife. We both bought our devices yesterday, mine from Three, and hers from EE (we are in the UK), both SM-N910F, so i proceeded to root my device and it worked all great. So earlier today i started the exact same procedure, unfortunately, my wifes Note 4 got stuck in a Recovery Boot Loop, and i genuinely don't understand what is happening.
As for the rooting method, i went with the [SM-N910*] CF-Auto-Root and choose the right .tar file, or else it wouldn't of had worked on the first device.
I have read quite a few posts, saw a few videos on youtube, but it far beyond me. I have seen a few people mention that i need to download the German (?) version of the Stock firmware, and then flash it. I seem to have found a link for it on SamMobile but it's gonna take 5 hours to finish, and i don't understand why i would download the German Stock firmware, is that the correct one for her device ?
At this point, is there any way around it ? Why did my device which is the same work perfectly, but not hers ?
I would appreciate any and all help, if you could make it quite detailed for me i would appreciate it even more.
Thank you!
Hi @Vaskie!
Can you enter in download mode?
Hello there @_mone, the following has happened since i posted:
Went ahead and flashed the following: N910FXXU1BOB4_N910FOXA1BOB4_N910FXXU1BOB4_HOME.tar and it made the device reach the home screen, from there i attempted to root using the same method which worked, but it ended installing a few extra applications, which i don't understand how. I also don't understand how flashing a new stock rom didn't make me start the device from the beginning, it already had all my information and went straight to the home screen ready to use. I feel quite confused if im honest.
On the other hand, most things seem to be working perfect, but i am having some issues with the front camera. I have two Note 4s, both bought yesterday from the same place, but one was flashed with the Stock rom (N910FXXU1BOB4_N910FOXA1BOB4_N910FXXU1BOB4_HOME.ta r) due to being stuck in a boot loop. The front camera seems to be massively over exposed compared to the other Note 4, not just a little bit either, making it almost unusable.
Would anyone be able to help ?

That's because you "dirty" flashed a new ROM on top of the old one.. it was like an "update".
What I suggest you (because you already rooted your phone and your knox is 0x1) is to flash TeamWin Recovery Project from ODIN and then flash a TW ROM from the Galaxy Note 4 Android Development (Snapdragon) page
To do so download "twrp-2.8.7.0-trltexx.img.tar" from here, put your phone in download mode, connect it to the pc via usb, from the pc launch odin, let it recognize your phone, add the downloaded .img.tar file on the pda button, click on the "start" button and let it flash the recovery.
Now download a TW ROM like _alexndr's DevBase from here and this modem and this bootloader.
Then put the downloaded ROM (N910FXXU1POF2_DevBase_alexndr.zip) in your external SDcard. Reboot your phone in recovery mode. From TWRP go Wipe/AdwancedWipe/ and tick DalickCache, System, Data, Internal Storage, Cache and "Swipe to Wipe". After go back to the first page, hit "Install" search "N910FXXU1POF2_DevBase_alexndr.zip" in "/external_sd" and install it. Wipe Dalvick and Cache again and reboot into download mode. Again connect your phone to the PC and launch ODIN now put the downloaded modem "CP_N910FXXU1POF1.tar.md5" in the CP button and the bootloader "BL_N910FXXU1POF2.tar.md5" in the BL button and click on the "start".
Once it is done switch off and on your phone and start again with the latest samsung rom for N910F already with root, busy box and all the fixes by _alexndr
And let us know if you still have problems.
Thank you very, very much for the very well detailed reply @_mone
I will attempt to go ahead with your explanation tomorrow. Would that somehow fix the camera, and i guess the other question is.. is the front camera issue that i explained myself above to do with me "dirty flashing" ?
Is there anything inherently wrong with "dirty flashing" ?
Thank you yet again!
Nothing wrong with dirty flashing.. but sometimes doing so you can create conflicts between old and new rom or leaving "bugs" from the old to the new generating problems in your new os that may wont be there if you performed a clean install. :good:

Would someone mind looking over my plan to root my Note 4? I just want to be sure

I have experience rooting a Xoom, an Atrix, and an S3, but at the same time I usually just follow instructions to the bullet point while only vaguely understanding what I'm doing.
I got my cracked screen replaced at a non-samsung outlet yesterday which I'm pretty sure voids my warranty, and if so, I want to take advantage of that by rooting. But a lot has changed since the last time I rooted a phone - they're talking about "systemless root" and flashing an SELinux Permissive Kernel and then "Oh no wait you don't have to flash such a kernel in this new version" and I have no idea what any of that is referring to, all that stuff is new to me.
I have a Canadian Note 4 SM-N910W8 running the latest COK3 OTA update on 5.1.1. I found this rooted ROM which I'm pretty sure is the one I want, but then, it's the only one I found, if there are more or better rooted ROMs please let me know:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/snapdragon-dev/trltecan-n910w8-aoa1-stock-rooted-t3025538
The instructions for how to install it keep changing for every version though. It also says I need to start by flashing TWRP via ODIN - Okay, I've done that before, but I want to make sure I get the right one. I found a couple of sources:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/ref-stock-firmware-kernel-modem-recovery-t2920452 - twrp-2.8.7.0-trltecan.img.tar
and:
http://galaxynote4root.com/cwmtwrp-recovery/ - openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.0-trltecan.img.tar
Not sure which one I should use.
All I want is to be able to edit the keyconfig files to get my USB controller working, to be able to edit system files to change the Touchwiz aggressive background app closing and allow apps to remain in memory for much longer to make it more like Windows memory management, and to be able to install Xposed modules like statusbar volume.
But I want to make sure that I'm doing everything *exactly* right, and that's why I like to ask real human beings to confirm my plan before starting. So I download one of those TWRP files, download ODIN, plug my phone into my PC, use ODIN to flash TWRP, boot into TWRP, use TWRP to wipe data, cache, dalvik, and system, and then install the rooted ROM I linked above. Have I got all that right? What's all this SELinux and systemless root stuff I keep hearing about, and why don't I need to do that anymore with the latest version of this rooted rom? Will this break any key features on my Note 4 like my spen or my external USB or my blood oxygen meter or all the cool novelty **** that Samsung Note 4 comes with?
Right here goes the rom u have is the right one for ur phone. There will be others around byt u can try that ome to start with. The twrp recovery u need is the 6th one on the list down the model numner is at the end of the file name, its the .tar file u want zip can be used also but thats using recovery to flash the rom. Using odin 3.09 latest one i think. U need to hold down volume down, home and the power to boot into download mode open idon with kies closed and end task with task manager in window.
Now whem oden starts u need to select the phone tab and choose the twrp recovery and flash that leaving everything unchecked apart from restart and reset time all others should be blank, i flashed with erase nand and nearly bricked my phone, thats one to leave for the experts lol.
Once u flashed recovery i think u need to root even though the rom is rooted rom i think it needs to be rooted before u flash the rom, not sure but its what was on the instructions i followed. If u try find a root file off here for ur phone u do same as u did flashing the recovery file and tjats it wait for phone to restart and reboot fully after flashing each recovery and root, i always do from knowimg its best ti imstall wimdows apps ome at a ti, e and reboot between the installs as less syste, errors can happen that way , well not system errors but linked dll files not been copied right and the like.
Thanks
Steve
Still need help them post back and will do my nest nut i a newb, i have an understandimg of how things work but by no means am i an expert i do what u do, i follow imstructions and learn as i go along what thimgs are and what they do, best way then u kmow what ur messing or dealing with.
U also, well i did for my 910f need to use a specific twrp or at least the latest release.
The walk throughs on most sites are all the right way to do it, just others are explained better than others and imclude other stuff if it goes wrong which believe me it can go wrong, easy as not seeimg a check box tocked or not ticked and boom paper weight lol

Okay but what about the other site I found, the XDA forum with TWRP recovery files? They seem like newer versions, but then that left me wondering if the reason the other site has older versions is because it's just outdated, or because only the older versions will work.
Thanks for all your help btw!
Your welcom, the rom you want is fine, u want to go for either of the roms version 3.21 de bloated or regula,, de bloated is where they take slot of apps by google and also carrier apps that sometimes come installed.
Steve.

New OTA update today

Hey guys, thought I would make a discussion thread about the new update today for the Sprint S5's. Looks like todays update was just over 200 MB. I don't know if it affects the latest chainfire root yet or not.
But yeah, make your stock S5 search for a update and you should find one waiting.
I've noticed:
The Android Security Patch Level is now December 1, 2016
Software version is now G900PVPU3CPL2
Do we know how long Samsung will continue to update our phone OTA? I appreciate that we still have support. It's not so bad being 1 month behind in security updates since even with security updates we are still vulnerable to 0-day exploits anyway.
Does anyone have a copy or link to this update? I want to see if it helps with signal on nougat based roms.
Thanks in advance

The best way to actually try and get this is through Kies or SmartSwitch apps. Sam Mobile does not have this, and it would be, about another month from now, till they even have it... Been there too many times looking for this so call update.
I know that is does state 01dec2016 security update. I also know, that Knox is added to (at least, all Knox is added data (Kbs, not Mbs) I also believe, they (Samsung, tech side phone updates) have added more apps for Knox. However, we don't have anything that is related to these new updates. heck 2 of them, state they have DATA. Through the stock app manager, you have an option, to erase this, because it is not installed....
not sure if this helps you find what you are looking for. ...
( me 2cents on this),... Why extra apps and data../. Why do we have to download a complete new Stock Rom, when we already were stock anyway ???) (Me dog did a real number on the phone. had to be a good eBay and Amazon shopper... Completely rebuild my S5.
Wondering if the S5 will be having A real update, such as 7.1... ??? !!!) we S5, was not on or in the press release early this month, regard the Samsung, Android updates... 7.0, 7.1 NOUGAT !!!
I certainly believe that they will in time update the S5 to 71 Nougat
This may just be a hunch but I have a feeling that if the Note 8's don't blow peoples faces off that the S5 probably won't be seeing Nougat officially (from Sammy).
Well there's a new update today for me anyways. This one is just over 27 MB's. 2 new updates in one month!
The new software version is called G900PVPS3CQA2
New antutu score updated.
It's very unlikely that S5 will receive an official N OTA from any carrier(or any msm8974, for that matter) as Qualcomm had planned 'no official support' for msm8974 past M. It was already very late in the cycle for M, and may not have made it onto the list for M had the msm8994 sucked less.
Does anybody know if we are still able to root our phone model with this new update?

I don't know for sure myself, as I have not gotten the update bring on aftermarket firmware. But I would imagine if you flash twrp and apply the latest supersu, it should work. I know that's how I did it with the cpk1 update.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong. I don't want anyone bricking their device based on what I've said.

Yes.. I did
I ran into some issues and factory reset, deleted my Internal Storage, and then ODined PK1 Stock onto my Sprint S5. I then got a prompt that G900PVPU3CPL2 update was available. After the phone restarted I was then prompted to update to G900PVPS3CQA2 After that one installed and restarted.. I successfully rooted using CFAutoroot and then put the latest TWRP Recovery on.
Now.. what screwed me up is me trying to put a 7.1.1 Rom on (LOS and even Resurrection Remix). Phone froze and would not allow me to enter any info in or select Wifi. When it did.. I had ZERO signal/data. I then re-odined.. PK1.. without the updates, rooted, and Twrped, then flashed the 7.1.1 (LOS and RR) with no problems. Made back-ups of both (within TWRP) and was able to Restore all three at will. I am currently back on the STOCK/ROOTED w/all updates including the QA2.. as I didn't feel like doing the customization of the 7.1.1. Roms with the game (SuperBowl) getting ready to come on.
Personally I like the Stock- Rooted -Updated- Twrp config as the only thing that bothers me is the heading theme being that Samsung Aqua blue. If I could theme it.. I might stay with it

Thank you for the info!! This is what I wanted to hear!! Someone who had the newest update and then went into detail of what they encountered. Thank you again!! Much appreciated!!
You can always see the latest official stuff for our phones here: https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G900P/SPR/
The only way we'll ever see Nougat on the S5 is via rom ports, or CM14/CM14.1 Official, which is supporting the S5.

No problem. After using the STOCK/ROOTED MM version with all the updates , I have decided that I really am just gonna stay on it. It is smooth, fast, and has all the things I need. I killed Bloatware so outside of the pull-down bar being aqua blue.. and background being white I'm very content.
Anyone know of an app for rooted phones that will allow me to rectify those things?

@cmicasa the Great, I keep getting a failed when using Odin, CFAutoroot, KingoRoot, KingRoot, and even when I try to use TWRP. I also read somewhere that I would have to unlock the Bootloader in order for this to work? Do you mind sending me a message in PM about how you did your rooting? If you don't mind sir. Thank you again for your time and assistance.

This is everything I did including putting PK1 on my phone, letting it then upgrade to G900PVPU3CPL2 and then update to G900PVPS3CQA2 After that one installed and restarted.. I proceeded to Root and put custom recovery on. Because U will not get the OTA updates once U root
Here are my steps Len:
1) First make sure U have the ODIN 3.10 or above> Links are here SamsungOdin or here Odin Download
2) Then go into Download Mode by pressing the "Volume down +home and then Power buttons" Once device boots hit the volume up button and Android dude should appear
3) open ODIN (I used 3.10) and plug phone to computer.
Load the PK1 tar in the PDA Slot, put your phone in Download Mode (power off, hold Vol Down, Home, and Power), and connect your phone to the PC. (I checked F.Reset and Auto Reboot)
Then after that is successful run CF Auto Root or whatever root injector you have in the PDA slot again. Once that finishes (wait until Odin tells you it was a Success before doing anything), get ROM Toolbox or something of that nature and remove any app with Knox in the title or that has the Knox symbol.
Load your phone into Download Mode one last time and then put whatever recovery you have (I use TWRP, make sure you grab the .tar format instead of the zip) and put that in the Bootloader slot in Odin. Then you're good to go, rooted and custom recovery, sky's the limit.
-I found a perfect site that does exactly what I did using CFAUTOROOT. It explains everything including TWRP
then for Root http://www.stechguide.com/root-samsung-galaxy-s5-android-marshmallow/
then for Recovery http://www.stechguide.com/install-twrp-recovery-samsung-galaxy-s5/

Thank you very much for breaking it down dummy style. Haha. It definitely helps. I will try it out when I get to my house and PC.

LOL.. no issues. Definitely go to those bottom links. They even have pictures. Be careful though.. I tried to experiment and see what checking the "Nand and Erase" in odin.. and damn near bricked my phone. Had to get PIT file and rebuild. Working smoother than ever now.. and like I said.. I'm sticking to Stock/Rooted and Xposed

So just to clear, there is no need to unlock the Bootloader? Also, if my phone has a password, does it need to be disabled? I.e. lock security feature such as creating a pattern in order to unlock the device to use.

I'm confused on that. Your phone will be booted into DOWNLOAD mode during the time of ODIN. Your Password will be inconsiquential

Okay, I am just making sure as I am not sure if that was one of reasons why Odin came back saying "FAIL". Thank you again.
