Changing navbar icons and color without overlay? - LG G6 Questions and Answers

On Nougat still on a H870. I'm trying to change the navbar icons and their color, but every app or tutorial seems to use overlays and need root to keep running. I'd prefer to replace the actual icons in the system and later unroot. Is there a means to do so?

Substratum + Andromeda
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g6/themes/substratum-lg-ui-accent-color-navbars-t3797860

Andromeda is Oreo-only and Substratum isn't working at all for me, no changes get applied.

I assume you are still on Nougat, that's why Substratum is not working for you.

Substratum Legacy is supposed to work on rooted nougat phones, no?
And oddly enough, the navbar icon changes worked.. but only until I restored a backup of my system after flashing a different ROM in between. Makes no sense at all.

Yes, it should work on AOSP roms. LG stock rom is heavy modified, so most of substratum stuff for AOSP will not work on it.

LGTweaks specifically targets the LG G6 structure, though, so it should work. But for some reason, it seems to require a system wipe before it does.

Wondering, how does a system wipe on the same OS make LGTweaks start working? Also make sure you're using the LG theme (aka no theme), but you probably know that already ?.

That's what I am wondering. I had stock rom (rooted), applied LGTweaks Navbar icons, it didn't work. I made a full backup of the rom as it was then. I dirty flashed Fulmics ROM over it, didn't like it, restored my backup, and once it booted back into my restored system, I suddenly had the changed navbar.

Sure it wasn't the action of rebooting a few times that made it work?

Yep, I had rebooted four times before that, and also tried shutting down and starting again.
On my old G2, I was able to simply replace the png files of the navbar icons in a system file. However, any tutorial I find, even for LG, mentions files I can't find on the G6 at all. Can anyone tell me where these icons are located on the G6?

I think I got it. For some reason, there were two LGTweaks navbar apk packages in system/vendor/overlays. Once I deleted both, it started working normally. On top of that, by compiling the source myself and just adding a new folder with my own PNG icons to the proper folder, I was able to put my own icons in there.

You can use an app like this one called "Pixel Navbar (No Root) now with animations" (literally the first search result for "pixel navbar" on the Play Store). However, you'll have to buy it to have it re-enable itself automatically after rebooting your phone.
If this isn't your cup of tea, then you'll just have to wait for Oreo so you can use Substratum.

Yes, and it also adds a notification which you can't clear... That's why I personally never used it ?

Just install xposed framework in magisk and install xstana module in xposed after that u can choose a stat and navbar theme in that app

Apparently doesn't pass safetynet, so it's no go for me.

Changing window animation
In case you want to change window animation, you can do it yourself. Try these steps: (as usual, do nand backup first before flashing)
Get xmlsForWindowAnimations.zip here
Extract it to your PC, there will be 5 new directories extracted.
On your PC, copy GalaxySThemeForO1.zip to a file, say you name it 'temp.zip'
Open temp.zip (just open, not extract). I use 7-zip here.
Navigate to directory 'system\framework', double click framework-res.apk, Continue navigating to directory 'res\anim'
Drag-drop all files in one directory (choose 1 directory among 5 extracted directories you got from xmlsForWindowAnimations.zip) into 'res\anim' directory
Close 7-zip, answer 'Yes' when asked whether to update framework-res.apk
If you know how to sign a zip file, do so, copy signed file to sd card and flash it.
Otherwise, copy temp.zip to sd card, reboot to recovery, choose 'Other' then 'Toggle Signature Verify', go back to main menu and flash 'temp.zip'
Reboot
I can't see the screenshot, is it dead link?
Reuploaded screenshot.
Can you see it now?
no probs with screenshots
works on void delta too.
Thanks for your info.
the icons in notification bar is in white colour like lol rom, not blue
im using void delta.
Those white icons belong to 3rd party apps?
If so, am afraid that we have to modify those 3rd party apps
If you think that is not the case, could you upload a screenshot?
Thanks

Downgrade Always On Display for more themes !

ROOT is required (Only for android 6 marshmallow )
I have a galaxy A7 2017 , and the Always On Display is good , but not enough... it only contain 2 clock themes and 1 calendar theme.
The S7 contain 11 clock themes and 2 calendar themes.
The A series 2017 come with AOD(always on display) version 1.7.85 , so if you downgrade AOD to version 1.7.34 you will get additional themes and customization !
Instructions:
•Download App Downgrader (ROOT) by Dev-Alex193a from the play store .
•Download AOD 1.7.34 apk from Apkmirror and put it in your internal storage .
•Open App Downgrader and grant Root .
•Select AOD 1.7.34 apk from internal storage (if you are android 6+ Allow App downgrader to access storage in app permission).
•Click Downgrade and wait between 15 seconds and 1 minute.
If you get a blue check mark that means it worked. :victory:
If the app is still loading after 1 minute, exit the app and try again,
And if it didn't work again that means you can't downgrade (sorry)...
Pros :
* 11 clock themes and 2 calendar themes !
* 3rd party notification is working .
Cons :
*After every reboot the AOD will upgrade automatically (restoring to the original version)
You have to re-Downgrade on every Reboot.(if you find any solution to this problem please tell me).
*Double tapping on notifications on AOD won't open the app.
This is my first post on xda, so sorry if i did anything wrong .
I can't post the links for the apps because xda rules : "To prevent spam on the XDA forums, ALL new users prevented from posting outside links in their messages. After approximately 10 posts, you will be able to post outside links. Thank you for understanding!"
Interesting, hope samsung will bring more themes with official 7 update...
I cannot believe Samsung so severely gimped this feature in an update. Thank you so much for the tip! It worked without a hitch, and my AOD looks so much more beautiful now.
Thank you so much!!!
I don't have a rooted phone but do you know if it's being updated through the Galaxy apps app? If so you can open Galaxy Apps, tap the three dots, Open Settings and select never auto update. The other way is to disable Galaxy apps altogether using BK Disabler or uninstall it.
can you install themes on the aod with this method ????
I found a way to not have to reinstall after reboot. Just follow the steps above only uninstall always on display before downgrading it. You need an system app uninstaller for this
The reason why aod has to be reinstalled on every boot, is because when you downgrade the app, it becomes a user app and not a system app. so to fix this, just use any tool that can make any user app a system app to make aod a system app, and then you won't have to reinstall aod on every boot.

I have an a5 2017. Iam on rooted stock. Iv changed with root explorer AOD apk from system with AOD from apkmirror and gave it permissions and it works, no downgranding ,and it stays after restarting the phone.
No doubletapp on notiff.

@nekos95
open a root explorer and go to system/priv-app/AOD service(back up this folder
just in case you want to revert) and delete AOD apk and then replace it with the one you downloaded from APK Mirror.
give the right permissions if needed 0644(check the three vertical boxes below READ and the first box below WRITE.
reboot and your done.if you want to revert back copy your backup file in system/priv-app again and reboot.

What is "Enable Android System + Reboot"

I've been dealing with this pesky problem since yesterday and I can't seem to figure it out. It appears on the notification tray when I scroll down. Restarting the device and wiping cache doesn't seem to do anything.

Rooted, TWRP, Magisk

Also running Substratum Swift Black theme, could this be causing the issue?

Same problem on
Moto Z2 Play
Android 8.0
no root
Swift Black 16.2-o
It just started happening after the latest update 1 or 2 days ago to Swift Black, I uninstalled via substratum and rebuilt and reenabled. Now my quick settings icons are all black and my notifications have an orange background that says "ENABLE ANDROID SYSTEM + REBOOT." Not really sure what it means and it doesn't go away after rebooting.

Enable android system + reboot on swift black
Hi I have found a trick to fix this issue with swift black theme on substratum. I am using a samsung device s8 plus; so not sure it this will work on other devices but here is the trick:
Unistall the Android system overlay on swift black, then restart your phone.
Go to your substratum app and click on the settings icon at the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
Enable " Allow dangerous overlay", then install again the "Android system" overlay.
Restart and it should work.
Note: after it worked on my device I went back to substratum settings and unchecked "Allow dangerous overlay".

Just updated to OOS 9.0.3 I need help now...

As the title says, I just updated to OOS 9.0.3 and it's so different from the old one i'm really scared to try anything and risk to brick the phone...
I have several problems with the phone (nothing too scary thankfully) and I was thinking some of you could help here.
1) Nova Launcher isn't working properly. When I try to see the apps menu (where all the apps icons are displayed) it just doesn't show up, instead i just see the background and the apps can be seen just a bit in the upper part.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
However, I can touch the screen and the apps open where the icons should be... I tried to update nova, but the apk gives me the "app not installed" error and I'm not sure why.
2) Not rooted. I want to root the phone. I had it rooted before the update, but considering the last time i tried to root the phone without looking exactly what to do all my memory got wiped, I need to know exactly how to install Magisk and TWRP without bricking the phone or deleting anything... I have a method already that works, but I'm not sure with this now.
3) Is it possible to change the "recent app" orientation to vertical instead of horizontal? Also, is there an easier way to lock and unlock a recent app?
4) Is there a way to link Do Not Disturb to the slider?
5) Xposed is not installed. To be honest I forgot how to install that one, has it changed with this new OS update?
I might have more questions, but that's all for now, I updated like an hour ago, so I haven't been able to try it out more
thank you
Alright, I can try to help with some of your issues, but not all.
Don't worry about the new stuff, you'll get used to it quickly. Some things are still a bit "under development", but mostly is very usable. You'll not break anything and as long as you can boot into fastboot, your phone will be alright.
I cannot help with Nova launcher, I'm not using it.
If you have your bootloader unlocked, then just flash the newest Magisk zip, and you're good to go. Just to be safe, download the MagiskManager app and also the uninstaller zip, so if you end up with a bootloop, you can uninstall it.
I don't think that you can change the recenets, but I might be wrong. If you click the 3 dots in the top right corner of the app, you can lock / unlock it.
I was wondering about the same. I tried to link the DND to the slider with Tasker, without luck so far.
To my knowledge, there is no stable version of Xposed for Pie just yet. There's a beta or alpha build which is somewhat working though.

Strange Emoji Issue OP6T Android 10

Hi guys
I cleaned flashed Android 10 to my OnePlus 6T
But get an odd emoji issue.
I see the attached envelope symbol in twitter notifications / messages, and in various applications. I also do t get any emojis appear in gboard,I've cleared the data and it feels to be an OS / system wide issue
Any ideas what this could be?
It's the envelope symbol next to the word Fourm in the example attached. It should be an emoji of some sort.

I just realized that I have no emojis in Gboard either. I'm on stable 10, clean flash.
I have this issue too. All Unicode characters aside from latin alphanumeric don't show, e.g. Japanese & Chinese characters are all boxes like your screenshot.
Edit: I should add, this is everywhere (all apps, keyboard, browser etc).
These issues are because of Reserve Partition. OnePlus in their infinite Wisdom, in order to save space in /system/media and /system/apps decided to move a bunch of stuff (emojis, fonts & OnePlus Apps eg. Notes, Icon Packs) to a new Partition namely /system/reserve. And then they Symlinked it to /system/apps and /system/media. However during OTA, the Symlink breaks. And the result is what you are experiencing. What's strange is that a clean install nor data wipe fixes it.

Probably...wait a few weeks for them to release 10.01
I typically don't install the "first release" of a phone OS...be it Oppo/OnePlus or anyone else.
Security patches are one thing, but most of the time, an unknown bug(s) aren't found until
they put it out in the wild. Might also be the reason I had read on other sites they had stopped
the release.
Doing a full restore and re flashing oos 10 fixed this issue for me. Not ideal. But works as it should do now that I started from scratch
