Hi,
I sent an Essential Phone to my mom oversea, and her phone has been having this issue where when she uses the the camera app, phone heats up, freezes, and eventually shuts down. It has the latest version installed (OPM1.180104.166). Has anyone else experienced this issue? If you know a fix, please share.
Thank you

It's weird. I just came from my vacation, which i used the essential to take photos and gps. And never afront any of this issues.. never heat up or freeze.
I'm on the same May update and used my camera extensively the last two days w/o any issues or overheats.
What's the signal like where she's using the phone? I'm wondering if the issue might be compounded by a weak signal area, especially if you're using an app that continuously backs up your photos to the cloud.
She should factory reset the phone and choose the fresh start option when setting up the phone again to verify that there isn't a software problem.
There are hardware problems with some Essential Phones that causes them to overheat and become unstable which leads to the phone freezing, rebooting or shutting down. The issue seems to be rare but it has been reported by some owners.
If the factory reset doesn't fix the issue it's almost certainly a hardware issue.

I've been facing these problems for over a week now and it's extremely frustrating. I get these random shutdowns when I'm just opening an app or using my phone longer than a certain amount of time. The phone will have 100% charge in the morning then shuts down and if I try restarting the Google splash screen shows up and shuts down again. Then the battery level will be at 70% and the whole thing happens again till I have no charge.
So when 4.4 came out I thought I'd update and these problems will go away and they didn't. Now the same thing happens I've done a data wipe/factory reset, cleared cache but still nothing. I thought some apps were causing problems so I uninstalled everything but still no use. I'm currently on stock 4.4 using the stock kernel. I was also on stock 4.2.1 when these problems started. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?
Thanks.
Do you also have a bad network connection/sim locks? Then you should read this topic. It could be a faulty battery.

Yeah my sim is deactivated but I think that's a sim problem. I spoke to my network provider to reactivate it tomorrow. Thanks for that thread I must've missed it somehow. Hopefully its just a battery problem so I can just get a replacement.
Since day one I've had issues with random shutdowns (plenty of threads out there about it). Mine happen when the device is in use, usually when switching between applications.
In my case it disappeared after a reset but then returned after installing lollypop. I get a shutdown maybe once or twice a day. Each time the phone won't turn back on unless I remove the battery.
Just discovered that if it shuts down plugging in a power cable not only causes it to switch back on without a battery pull but it automatically starts again!
Anyone else noticed this? I'm still not sure about returning the device for a replacement! What do you think?
I've had this issue, it did stop for a few weeks without me doing anything to the device but the last couple of days it's returned. Hopefully just software related since so many people seem to have the same issue.

As mentioned in my original post I had the problem at first but a factory reset with the latest software corrected the issue. I've since upgrades via kdz to the latest lollipop rom (v20a) which brought the issue of random reboots back. As mentioned these seem different to the ones common to this device as they always happen during use of the phone and not whilst it's idle.
The only time i have random turning off is when i leave it on charge over night

Hi guys,
I've had a super weird issue with my phone for the past few months (although I don't remember exactly when the issue started happening). Basically, my phone randomly reboots when there is a chathead/bubble/etc on the screen. This problem happens when I use Facebook Messenger chatheads, bubbles by LinkBubble, and chatheads by YAATA. I don't think it's a program-specific issue, nor does my phone reboot every time I use those apps. It's very inconsistent and hard to predict.
Have any of you encountered this problem? Any ideas for what is causing it and/or how to fix it? It's really annoying to have my phone randomly reboot itself multiple times each day. I know I could just uninstall the three apps that seem to trigger the reboots, but I really like those apps and want to find a way to keep them around.
Have you over clocked at all?

No. The problems initially started when I was on stock, unrooted. I'm now on CM12.1 and rooted, but the random reboots are still happening.
All these problems happened right after the latest software update. I've been trying to find this problem online but it seems like not many people know this kind of problem. I've managed to find one other friend who has the exact same problem as me, he's using LG V20. So here's the problem :
1. The phone app is having a long freeze over and over again. It took about 10 seconds from pressing the call button on a contact to the phone actually making the call
2. The battery drain is real. Even when there are no apps running and the phone just on standby, the battery life got significantly worse.
- I've tried to run diagnostics and also use Greenify app to see if the culprit is from a third-party app, but there seems to be no problem at all with the other apps.'
- I've tried to use a third party caller app but they still resulted in the same freeze over and over again. I've since uninstalled the app because the problems seems to come from the core app.
Anyone share the same problem? Can you help me find a solution for this? Because the phone is practically useless if the battery life keeps on running out and it's scary knowing that if someone stabbed me and it took me 10 seconds to call the emergency number then I'm screwed.
Many thanks.
I'm experiencing the similar starting this month, and seems like the battery drain comes with heating surrounding the power button, are you seeing the same symptom?

Anyone here had experienced random reboots? It constantly happening to me different days, with no reason. I do not know what could be wrong.

Using this device for 3 weeks and I've been experiencing this since last week. It hasn't happened during the day yet but at night it does. When I wake up my phone is either at the 'unlock sim card' screen when it's connected to my charger or just off and I have to boot it up. The latter is very annoying as my alarm doesnt work then.
I fear it's a hardware (battery or mobo) issue but hope it's a software one as it's happening only during the night so far. I'm in the process of unlocking my bootloader as of an hour ago and hope a clean install / flashing an older version of miui or flashing miui.eu may fix this.
I have low hopes for Banggood customer service where I ordered the phone...
Edit: please do chime in if others have experienced this or have advice on troubleshooting like logging the crashes or smth, I'm a big noob in this regard.
It happens to me randomly. No specific time of the day, but not always, its been getting frequent though. Before its like every 2 to 3 weeks, now i'am having it every week. There are also times that the phone becomes hot, not very but noticeably hot, then it freezes so I have to force reboot it. If someone out there knows whats going on please enlighten us.

Okay it seems I was pretty dumb and had the auto-schedule turned on under Security -> battery -> settings -> schedule on/off. Had it set at turn on at 00:00 and off at 07:15. However, I thought this settings was to turn on and off the battery saver mode lol. I turned the whole thing off and hope I won't find my phone rebooting at night now.
Did you find a solution? It has been happening to me too. When I am playing a game, or doing skype calls, or just randomly, It happened a few times also when I tried to use google photos, it is more and more often.

Yeah, see my comment above. For me I actually accidentally set it up to reboot. Random reboots often point to a faulty battery, possibly loose connectors.
