Try Gcam ported, it performs even better than stock camera. As for camera app, I believe it involves complex algorhytm so it's kinda hard for devs to build a flawless camera app.

Download lucky patcher, and then install the pixelmaster camera APK that you can find in apkmirror. It is, what I believe, the best solution.
Dude...
You should use the Pixelmaster camera that's posted on the LOS thread. Courtesy of @planet9.

DoF works but not as an effect. If you try to take a picture focusing on the nearer object, the object further away will be out of focus.
Manual mode also works flawlessly.
Some effects (post processing) won't work correctly... they won't be missed.
The phone won't take the picture zoomed in, but since it's a fake zoom (not optical), you can crop the picture to whatever detail you want to focus.

First, check you have a rooted device. If you do, install lucky patcher (Here. The download is in a Zip file, you need to decompress it). Then, download the OG camera app, from here , or install the newer, Zenfone 4 version from here. Then, open luckypatcher and hit the button that says "Rebuild and Install". That will show you a file explorer. In it, search for the previously downloaded apk. When you find it, touch it. It will show you a menu, in it touch the option that says "Install as system app". Wait untill it's done, hit restart now and whe it boots up, you will have the Asus OG camera.
Remember that you need to repeat this prosses every time you flash an update or another ROM.

Hello
I got tired waiting for an official fix, so I came up with this workaround.
twrp-flashable_OPX2.2.0_camera_patch.zip - This zip with apply the OPX front camera configuration.
twrp-flashable_OPX_camera_patch_imx214.zip - This zip will apply the OPO rear camera configuration
You'll be able to record 1080p at night without worrying about the fps drop issue.
I am not responsible for any damage on your device when applying this patch.
EDIT: Added a revert flashable zip.
EDIT2: Added zip file with imx214 libchromatix_default_video.so
Sweet. Thanks
Swapped my Recent and Back buttons.
Edit:
A couple reboots might've fixed this, but I also messed with Gravity Box a bit as well. There's two options to fixing that problem, potentially.

This patch shouldn't mess with buttons layout. You might had a pending operation that took effect on reboot when you flashed this zip.
try hydrogen os.
does your phone need to be rooted or will it work fine with stock?
Does this patch works also with custom roms like cm13?
Sorry. This patch is for default camera only? Or its for any camera apps running on oss 2.20?
It works perfect now, thank you so much for this mod. Where did this libs came from?
Shame on One Plus btw.

This is the front camera binary

^ No. I installed it in my unrooted phone. Both cameras work properly. Professional photos option is not available in our phone.
Thank you!
anyone have any luck setting the twist gesture to launch the CAM.apk?
Does this work with no issues?
So this works on non-2016 devices I'm assuming?
Is it better than the stock app (or lolgooglecamera)?
Read the thread, test it, report your findings.
Tried it on AICP ROM, installs fine, the only rear video size options are 4K/1080p/720p/VGA all at 30FPS only. Slow motion option is greyed out probably because you can't change the default size of 720p 120fps. Works ok though. Quality is ok but not as good as the stock camera.
Hello dear fellow users of Xperia X Xompact.
I am currently using OMNI rom mod, with TWRP, bootloader unlocked - and as for ROM itself it's not too bad but Camera app is terrible, nearly impossible to record any videos (screent shuttering, performance problems).
I have installed Google camera app from Google store - any time I open video mod: app crashes saying that application could not connect with camera. In general I am very dissapointed withc picutres quality and both apps does not really give my muhc options to improve that.
So, my idea was to get Sone stick camera installed on this rom. Any of you guys know if and how I could find it ? I took time to look up for it myslef but found nothing really interesting. I don not know if this is even possible. I am willing to go back to stock image, as currently this phone's camera is pretty juch useless.
Any help is welcomed

Since HMD won't give us Google's ARcore, has anybody found any working ARcore mods?
(of course for non rooted)
I dont think the Nokia 6 17 have ARcore hardware
Try this.
First install the arcore.apk and then directly install v1.1 over it. It's not a proper working mod of it for our phone, so things like Google's "just a line" app won't work. But this did make AR stickers functional in my Google camera mod. There's a separate APK for AR stickers though.

I've got a leaked ARcore update in Nokia 6.1 and saw that there's nothing special and there were just some special permissions in the root folders

Yes it should, If you've installed it before. Tho I suggest a reboot after you're done installing both apks.

Try to clear the data and cache from settings, for arstickers and google camera and then reboot. I should warn you tho, since it's only a modded port, AR Stickers will only work sometimes. Atleast in my case it is like that. I'm attaching a small video I made while testing.

I think it should work on all recent versions of it but here's the one that I personally use. Though for AR Stickers, there's a separate apk. You need to install the AR stickers apk before you can see the option in your camera. Install AR Core first, in the way I mentioned above. Then install AR Stickers apk from the link. Then you'll be able to see the option in your google camera. But its better to reboot after installing, before you use it.

I know, I know, I'm on XDA so I must want the GCAM mod all the way!
I've managed to install the Pixel Experience ROM on my Mi Mix 3 5G and I'm loving what I see so far, I just miss the stock camera. I've extracted the APK from the stock ROM but it won't install on my Pixel Experience ROM. It's throwing up the error "App not installed" when I try to install the extracted APK. I assume this is possibly due to it trying to save in the same folder as the 'stock' camera that comes preinstalled with the Pixel Experience ROM.
Does anyone have an installable APK for the stock camera or suggest any way of me editing the APK to be able to install it?
Thank you!
I don't know if this is exactly what you were after but I tried it out yesterday and so far so good.
More info in the Pixel Experience thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi.../rom-pixel-experience-mix-3-5g-t4131417/page2
You should use anx camera with this Rom instead of Google camera
To anyone using this rom, anxcamera is a must have! It's the miui camera ported over to AOSP and everything is working fine (incudes front flash, 960fps slow motion, 4k h265, filters and effects and the lot) I haven't experienced any bugs with it either and the quality in on par with the Google camera app. Download from the official website as the developer closed his xda forum

I've tried a few gcam's and anx, but all I get is a static image in Camera. If I move the phone around, the first image that locked in the camera is static, it doesn't change. And no, it's not an image I took from pushing the camera button, it's static from starting up the camera.
I don't seem to be able to get this to work. If anyone has any filenames of what I should download, that'd be really helpful! Or better yet, any links. I would really appreciate the help!
