Hi,
my cell provider charged data roaming despite being disabled on my PH-1.
Each day it only used few KB but enough for my provider (Rogers/Fido Canada) to charge me.
Day 1 USA, AT&T MOBILITY RM 67.00 KB
Day 2 USA, AT&T MOBILITY RM 38.00 KB

Is that a bug/issue in Android 8.1 or Essential phone or somewhere else?
Can an app overwrite the Data roaming toggle? (Got rooted phone)
Thanks

I saw this same issue. I was in Europe, Paris to be exact and returned last week, somehow the system used data yet everything was turned off. I am making inquiry w my carrier who is Virgin Canada, part of Bell, found it odd as well.

Happened again. This time I even disabled entire Mobile Network still provider claims data usage:
Code:
Tue ER 29 KB
Wed ER 66 KB
Thu ER 36 KB
Fri ER 12 KB
Sat ER 18 KB
anybody same issue?

Vario 2 - GPRS faster than UTMS/HSDPA - WTF?

Not having had a PPC or phone that could handle full internet before, I was not sure how fast the speeds should be but I recently was in an area that did not have HSDPA and the phone automatically connected via GPRS.
To my shock, GPRS loads (or displays) web pages noticeably faster than 3 bars of service with UTMS.
I am on T-mob WnW (unlimited) and am currently disabling UTMS when I just want to browse. Downloading is still much faster (dsl speed test etc) but GPRS is way faster at browsing.
It also takes well over a minute to connect to UTMS (sometimes it just stays on "connecting" until I close that and start the connection again) and only about 30secs to connect to gprs.
1, What the hell is going on?
2, Are there settings out there that will stop this issue?
Help. Please. Someone. Soon. Please.
Can I ask how you're finding T-Mobile with WnW? I'm looking at one of their packages, but I'm still umming and arrring...

I am using their flext 35 plus WnW. I'm using it instead of a broadband connection and I love it. I must admit that you cannot use it as a modem (it must be WnW Plus), and for p2p and it works like a charm. In general I'm able to download files at around 100KB/s, browsing is extremely fast and the only thing I can sey is go for it
Does it only come with the pink plastic around the keyboard? Also have you stayed with T-Mobile's ROM? And if so what's it like?
What version of WnW did you go for? I'm looking at Flext 35 with WnW Plus. Can I also ask what applications if any you've added?
Many thanks,
-Dave
I am on WnW Flext 25 thorugh T-mob business sales. I got the phone for £59, the package the Flext 25 for £25 per month and WNW for an extra £7.50.
Because I went direct with T-mob I get £5 off per month for life and for the first three months I get WNW for free, so package costs £20 for the first 3 months then goes to £27.50 per month.
Generally I am pleased with flext apart from:
1, 0870 + 0845 (etc) numbers do not come out of your flext allowance and will be charged on top of your bill. For these national rate numbers that you might call often (bank etc) it's worth finding out their standard number (they all have one - say you need to have it as you might be calling them from abroad)
2, The international calls + SMS are v. expensive. Don't use this abroad or for calling someone overseas unless you have a calling card etc. Data is actually not that bad unless you use it a lot.
3, I have really patchy connection problems but think it is the phone not T-mob. They are actually OK at sorting out problems fairly swiftly but this could be due to the fact I am a business customer.
4, I found the way they bill you really confusing and illogically listed, especially the month I ported my number from another network.
I have stuck with the original T-mob ROM as I am having all sorts of connection problems (data and voice) and knew I had to send it back to them. I do however think there are more reliable ROMs out there.
Go for T-mob, the package is the best on the market, Orange is really expensive for data and Voda's packages are not as well thought out.
By the way mean-machine what P2P's are you using?

Flat rate connection for Softbank Japan

Quick and Dirty
Are you in Japan?
Do you have a Softbank SIM?
Do you have the Packet Flat Rate Full? or the older Packet Houdai? (In Japanese パッケト放題 and パッケト定額フル)
Do you want to use ANY unlocked WM-based phone on Softbank's network?
Then this cab is for you! Install and enjoy.
FAQ
Q: Doesn't the Connection Wizard do this automatically?
A: NO! Don't trust him! He is a Chaotic Evil Connection Wizard.
As many have found out to their disappointment, the Connection Wizard built into most ROMs installs the open-but-expensive Softbank connection. The Connection Wizard will try to set up the 64k digital data plan that charges per 30 seconds instead of per packet and the APN for this account is [email protected] or [email protected] So if you see [email protected] in your data settings, DELETE THOSE SETTINGS! This [email protected] AP is not compatible with the flat rate plans and is charged differently (read: heavily). Some have ended up with bills over 50,000 Yen.
Delete whatever connection the Connection Wizard makes for you before installing this cab.
Q: What does this cab do exactly?
A: It installs a connection with the following information:
Name: Softbank
Modem: Cellular (3G)
Access point: open.softbank.ne.jp
User name: opensoftbank
Password: ****************
Q: Why don't you just tell us the password and we can do it manually?
A: Softbank wouldn't like that.
Last April Softbank changed their password because it was published too widely. This created big problems for many people who were using the old password. To avoid this, I and others with the password have been trying to distribute it by non-public means (email, private messages, writing it on bathroom walls, etc).
Recently, some people who don't know any better have been publishing this information publicly, risking Softbank changing the password yet again, screwing us all. But don't get angry and send them flames . They can't help being that way.
Q: Can I use this connection with MMSLite?
A: Apparently you can, but the MMSLite connection information has been released widely and is available on this site. Do a search.
Q: Why is Softbank so secretive? And why did Softbank change the password? And if the MMSLite connection information has been public for so long, why don't they change that too?
A: Hey now, one question at a time.
The following is speculation, but here goes: I doubt Softbank has any automatic controls on the amount or type of data going through its mobile servers. They are probably worried that if this information gets out that people with SIM accepting notebooks / 3G modem cards can just use this information to get (relatively) cheap, limitless mobile broadband.
The first password change was done by a ROM update to the X01HT (Hermes). At the time, there were few enough X01HTs out there that they could afford to send every customer a 256mb microsd card with the ROM update on it. This ROM upgrade also changed the radio ROM to one which made it much more difficult to unlock the Hermes. Before this, lots of X01HTs were being bought subsidized from Softbank, unlocked, then sold on Ebay for a profit (and a subsequent loss for Softbank). Now that Softbank has more WM-based phones, and has stopped subsidizing handsets so drastically, a four-model, system-wide ROM update looks less and less likely. But it could happen.
The Softbank MMS connection is used system-wide by most of Softbank's phones, both smartphones and dumbphones. Any change to this protocol would be a huge headache for Softbank and is extremely unlikely.
Q: So, if I can get the password somehow I can use my Softbank SIM to surf my laptop and only pay the flatrate fee?
A: Probably. If you have a 3G modem that accepts WSIM cards.
Q: Will you PM me the password?
A: Sure. But it would probably be easier to use one of these links from some people who don't know any better
Q: This cab ROCKS! Who made it?
A: RayB
Q: Hey, where's the cab? Did you forget to attach it like some kind of idiot?
A: Yep. See the next post.
Here you are.
Thank you for your nice post.
By the way I just "discover" (edit : forgot to click on larsuck's link in original post) this: http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/price_plan/packet_full/index.html
Is the new limit for unlimited packet plan 5985yens? It would be a nice news!
There still are informations on the old unlimited packet plan, so I'm wondering if there is a trap...

I can't speak from experience, but I am 99.9% sure this password will work with the new rate. A guy using a stock X02HT on this thread reported that he was okay after switching. And I doubt he took his X02HT into the shop for them to change the AP.
I would switch and give it a try, but I have actually never used more than a couple thousand yen worth of data a month. I get most of my regular sites' feeds cached in using SPB Insight.
I took the dive myself and setup the new data plan, was jsut a quick visit to the local softbank, and all still works fine technically. Just waiting on the revised bill to see if it actually took effect

anybody???
Sorry for the delayed response. My bill was all in order , so you should be safe upgrading to the new data plan from the old 10,000 yen per month plan. But you never know they could change things
I can confirm that the connection.cab works also with Blackstone
I can confirm the connection.cab works with my diamond. I have flashed the x04ht rom found elsewhere on this board.
My billing cycle is as follows:
Usage is charged up to the 24th or so and then bill is released on the 7th of the following month.
I check my usage just now: パケット通信料 ~19,000円
It says that discounts have not yet been applied but after working this out to be something like 250,000 packets, I am a little worried. This is assuming the rate is 0.08 Yen per packet. I figure I have used about the same data as with my actual softbank device (the odd email check [mobile.gmail.com] and the odd browsing [less than 10 minutes of yahoo.co.jp etc]). I really don't use it much at all. I work usually 12 hours a day and I am too beat to mess with my diamond.
My previous months usage (including the same browsing habits and the mobile gmail) only ever peaked at like 60000 packets. Mind you I can only look at past bills in their post-discount-applied state.
I am going to call SB tomorrow and ask them what's up.

The packet count shouldn't change depending on discounts. Only the money charged should change.
Make sure you don't have the m2D weather auto-updating or anything automatic like that running.

Yeah I killed that. I am just waiting for my final bill to be ready in a few days. We tried calling SB and they seemed to not know f'all. One lady even said, and I quote:
"softbank sims are not sim free so if you put it into another non-softbank device it will no longer function and you will have to get another one"
I got off the line with her as soon as I could.

/he sighs. Its hard to know what to say to that kind of stupidity. One can only hope that the girl is just making stuff up. Otherwise, she is just repeating the lies they have distributed to their staff.
Anyway, let us know how it goes. Good luck.
I just got the above 30,000 Yen warning message from SB.
But I was for a week roaming in Europe, might be related to this.
Roaming in Europe would do it alright. My coworker just got his 70,000 yen roaming fee for data usage.
My last few bills have been fine. Packet use in the range of 20,000 yen fully discounted and the new flat rate 5700 yen charge applied. I dont think there will be a problem. I was using the 10,000 yen flat rate package for 2 years prior to this on non softbank phones and it only went above when roaming.
So I got my bill and with the open connection I was charged as follows (approx, because I am too lazy at the moment to get the exact info, but it goes like this):
with the open connection, X-series phones will be charged at a max of 10700en or something like this.
to get the 4400 en one, you have to be within the above "walled garden" (basically a bull**** plan)
to get the 5900en one, you have to be using an iphone.
I am going to try and set my diamond up with the iphone settings.
Also, I find it bull**** that I am being charged as a X04HT user when I don't even have an x04ht.

Oh, roaming fees aren't charged by softbank initially. The provider your bud was roaming on has each kB or packet charged to softbank. Softbank then in turn charges your bud.

Rogers New Updates for HTC dream/Magic

I got a txt message from rogers saying that an update is available for the 911 calling issue, and dis update also includes the SenseUI,
now how will dis effect on the rooted HTC Dream phones
shud I unroot the phone to get dis update
or will CyanogenMod give us a new update with SenseUI
yeah i got that txt msg too, said somethign about the internet going down too
The 911 issue is fixed in all 1.6 roms including cyanogenmod. If you want SenseUI then flash a rom that has that in it. This really doesn't change anything for rooted users except that we will get a credit on our bill.

yas we vl get a credit
by the way im getting my magic on monday so i vl have the update in dat
is da internet goes down for a month o wht
My worry is that Rogers will shut off internet access to our rooted Dreams untill we install this patch, regardless of whether we need it or not. Any word on whether this will screw over rooted phones?
the text I got on my magic said:
"In order to help ensure 911 calls are completed internet access will be temporarily disabled..... To minimize loss of internet service please complete your software update immediately. Upon completion, internet access will be re enabled within 24 hours."
Does that mean until I update I don't get internet. Its okay with the magic but My dream has a different MOD so I can't exactly update it :S does that mean I wont be be able to to use my data :S ever...
thats my worry with the txt i got, i called rogers and said i had 1.6 software already and he said the internet shouldnt be an issue then. we will see i guess..
says the "internet will be effective as of 01/24/2010 6:00am EST."
Here is wht Mary from rogers says abt the update
Hi There. Just wanted to jump in to clarify one point. Data will not be disabled until tomorrow - Sunday, January 24 - at 6am for those who have not updated their device with the 911 fix. With safety being the highest priority, this was a necessary step to ensure 911 calls will complete on all devices.
If you are currently having issues, I suggest you call Technical Support.

I think you have to wait till Monday to find out. Everybodies internet will be shut off tomorrow regardless of root or not. It will be off for 24 hours. Question is, will those of us who have rooted have internet access on Monday.

About Rogers service interruption
I think my biggest issue is with this "RogersMary" person on the AndroidForums, and the conflicting information I get from phoning tech support vs. her (is she an official support person? She inferrs she is by her ID and the tone of her posts but I wonder...).
Here is my "911 Saga" w/ Rogers:
* get a series of French and english SMS from Rogers: first to diable GPS to make sure 911 works, then that an update is available at rogers.com that is mandatory--it says internet would be shut off for up to 24 hours starting Sunday at 6AM (no time zone given--I assume Eastern but could be pacific based on the IP addresses my phone gets, or could be my local Mountain time). It says to "prevent FURTHER disruption" upgrade your phone BEFORE the outage starts.
* I go to rogers.com and get instructions. Requires WinXP or Vista. I don't have any windows computers at all here (I have a Mac and a Linux computer at my disposal). Supremely annoying!
* I google for answers, find RogersMary's posts on AndroidForums saying 2 things: If your PC doesn't meet support requirements phone, and in so many words that only those that don't upgrade their phone will lose their internet so stop fussing and update already.
* phone rogers tech support. I ask for instructions to upgrade my phone without a Windows PC...long pause...response (and I quote) "I have no idea". (strike 1 for RogersMary).
* I scour further. NOTHING on rogers.com, but in the forums I find images of this update that you simply load onto an SD Card and do a restore from there. I do this...and after a VERY VERY LONG reboot I get an "extreme phone makeover", and the phone info shows same system build number as in the instructions. Huzzah! No thanks to Rogers though.
* Sunday morning arrives. My battery died in the night (but long after I upgraded) so I plugged in, turned on my phone. NO DATA ACCESS EVEN WITH UPDATE USING OFFICIAL ROGERS BUILD.
* I phone tech support AGAIN. I told them I have no Windows PC but I did find the update file for my SD Card and upgraded that way but still lost network, and did my method of updating mean Rogers didn't register it? He thanked me for upgrading and said be patient--that ALL Rogers customers w/ Rogers Magic would have a disruption for UP TO 24 hours even with the upgrade in place (STRIKE 2 FOR ROGERSMARY!). That is the main reason for the data plan credit.
Anyways, this is what he explained: Rogers has to "scan the network" to query the phone for information in order to verify the mandatory upgrade. If your system build is OK (didn't clarify if it had to be an exact match or a certain number or higher) then your data plan will be re-enabled. This scan is not a routine thing they do--it is a scheduled event that will occur over the 24 hour period that started this morning. So, if you do the upgrade after this morning there is a chance during the scan and find your phone not upgraded to the proper build number and your data plan will NOT be reactivated automatically by tomorrow morning, at which time you have to get ahold of customer service yourself and have them re-activate your data plan manually. (Ignore RogersMary and remember the SMS said upgrade to prevent FURTHER disruption--not to avoid disruption entirely).
This guy said I had to be patient and to contact support again only after Monday at 6AM if you have no data/internet as it could take that long to sort out. The time it takes could vary depending on your region, if you are within signal range, if your phone is powered down and how old your SIM card is.
The last one was interesting: I have a SIM card that is on its third phone and is approaching 5 years old (when I go to the local Rogers store to upgrade they just move my SIM card--I've not been given replacement SIM cards). He has taken support calls related to very old SIM cards and replacing them has fixed issues in the past. Notably, I've had SMS messages sporadically arrive hours late, but no total loss of service--thought it was just net congestion. He said it could be the old SIM card becasue older SIM revisions issued before 3G/HSDPA, though they work on 3G, have sometimes inconsistent performance as they were not tested with the 3G network before being issued. If you have unreliable SMS, the scan they're doing today could be unreliable too (delayed, etc).
So, I come away with the following:
* Rogers didn't promise NO disruption, they said UP TO 24 hours, and MORE if you don't upgrade, so you can't REALLY be sure if you have issues until tomorrow morning at the latest. The disruption might have come and went before you woke up this morning, or it may persist through the day.
* If your phone is off or has no signal through out the day, Rogers may not be able to scan your phone, and the effect might be the same as not upgrading.
* Not sure if it is fact or an educated guess, but I suspect that this scan could be performed through the same mechanism as SMS (text messaging), though I doubt you'd actually SEE a text message yourself (it'd be a specially crafted packet of data). That way a "data" operation can be performed on phones without data/internet enabled. Perhaps if your SMS messages take awhile then this scan would too.
* If you are still using a SIM card that was issued before 3G/HSDPA was offered by Rogers it isn't a revision that has undergone testing on the upgraded network. It doesn't prevent you from getting 3G but it isn't guaranteed and has been the cause of various issues from SMS to unreliable web browsing and they might blame it on your internet not reactivating if it fails...but wait until tomorrow to complain...
IT WORKED!!
I'm back in!!!
I called(landline), did NOT pick a phone, went to general tech(no wait) said vaguely "I was having some intermittent data issues and some forums said to call up and request a network refresh", he (very eagerly) said sure! turned off the phone, he refreshed, and I'm back.
He proceeded while booting to ask about what specific issues but I kept it vague, text issues, on/off data (i did not get asked about the update!)
If my data goes out in an hour like it seemed in the start, then Rogers is sweeping users in which case, turn your phone off until the whole ordeal is done to avoid being marked again, or risk calling for another refresh,(I'm sure they will catch on soon, but those outsourced peeps LOVE the easy calls!)
I prefer the nice method, instead of the death threats to the managers
if they ask about the update say "I did and i had intermittent issues some forums said...
enjoy your data(and the free month!)
We get a free month?!?!?

[Q] Huge internet usage

Hey everyone,
I have a dell venue pro and I live in the UK and am on the O2 network. I am on the £10 tarriff with a £3 bolt on which gives me 100 Mb of internet to use per month, I thought this would be enough for casual Facebook updates and using Bing maps, however when the bolt on was activated I turned my WiFi on because I was at home and watched a 40 minute video off the internet, when I checked my allowance it said I had used 70mb! First of all my WiFi was on so my cellular connection shouldn't have been used anyway so I phone o2 who said sorry we only charge for what you use. So I disabled my WiFi enabled 3g and went on google and Facebook and it cost me 9mb! When I turned off 3g the usage was sensible again, so is there something going on in the background that I should turn off? My email is synced at every half an hour but that's the only background thing going on that I am aware of, all my friends use 3g and there internet usage is nowhere as near as wild as mine is, can anyone please help me?
Cheers,
Syed

Cheers,
Syed

I had a similar experience a while back. Since my mobile provider offers automatic text messages when I'm about to reach my 3G limit along with full history log of usage, I had a look and noticed my DVP stayed connected for over an hour somehow even though I was not using the phone at that time. E-mail checks were setup like yours. The weird thing is that it didn't happen in the beginning when I used 3G and left it on without using it.
By any chance did you update to the 8107 version of Mango? Because it only happened to me after that, perhaps it's related? I forced the update on my phone...

Thanks for the reply. My phone came pre-loaded with Mango so I've never experienced pre-Mango. The OS version on my phone is 7.10.7720.68. After you forced the update 8107, is the internet usage back down to normal with 3g? Thanks.

[Q] Data roaming setting ignored(?!)

Two days ago I got a nasty surprise call from my mobile provider asking me to make a payment 120 EUR to cover the costs of my unusually high data usage abroad that morning?! My Nexus 4 has allegedly downloaded 19Mb of data while in roaming - even though setting "Data roaming" was set to off. I was abroad 2 weeks ago, for 2 weeks and yet that time phone behaved as expected and no data was transferred while in roaming.
Is it possible that the phone has all of a sudden decided to ignore the "Data roaming" setting and use the internet?
Or could it be an error made by mobile provider?
How do I prove this is not my fault?! Is there a detailed data usage log on the phone?
Thanks
BTW Phone is Nexus 4, Android 4.3, build JWR66Y (so pretty much the latest software)
I've seen the same behavior
I've seen the same with my LG Nexus 4 running Android 4.4
When I got over the border, regular internet stopped, because roaming was turned off.
I've turned it on for five mintes and then turned roaming off again. Now when I look at my location history from Google, every waypoint in the 'roaming'-area is there!? Did the device buffer the trackpoints and sent them later on, OR does KitKat not honor the setting?
