That was too bad experience for me. I noticed today that the apps I moved to sd card, wouldn't respond and they also disappeared from the programs list but they were listed in remove programs list. So, I went a step further and looked at the contents of my sd card just to discover that everything was lost and returned to factory default folder configuration. All my photos, music, etc. are gone. The card isn't dead but only erased. It still has some folders but I assume they are the default data folder that were created when the programs are accessed.
Now, I removed the battery today without shutting down first. Could that have caused the problem?
Any way to recover my data back?
You could try to recover them the the program "Recuva " its very good freeware. I'm pretty sure its windows only, best of luck.

I am currently running active file recovery and had no luck with quick scan. I am now running thorough scan but I don't think it will help.
nope, only folder structure discovered but empty. Too bad but it shouldn't be like that. Some corrupt files would be acceptable, but thw whole card????
As andy suggests I would try recuva anyway you've nothing too lose and it may work even where the other didn't.
Hmm, happened to me once on a crap sd card.. Had to reformat and suddenly the read/write speed drop drastically, around 150Kb/sec on class 4 card.. Luckily, i happened to keep my old class 2 sd, works like charm.. I think it had to do with the conditions of the sd card..

like what the others said, try running it thru recuve to recover the files then run a scandisk on the card

I don't think that's what caused the problem as i removed the battery a few times without shutting down and never faced this issue.
One time i got an error message and i could not access the files on the microsd. The solution was to run a checkdisk and fix any bad sectors.
I always backup my microsd at least once a week for a rainy day, i strongly suggest you do the same from now on.

+1, I have Titanium Backup, run a full backup (User apps + Data) every night and backup the card (using Simple backup on Ubunutu) as often as I remember then if i lose or damage my phone I can feasibly recover everything.
I was getting message from PC when I plugged my phone on USB from day 1. The message was that the card need to be scanned for errors and so I did that all the time. Last time I plugged my PC to cradle I got the same and the scan fixed some errors. If the battery removal didn't cause the problem then it should be that last scan. Maybe my card was faulty but not completely. It's the stock card.
Many users reported that their card died while they were using their DHD (most of them if not all got a Samsung microsd in bundle).
I use a SanDisk class 2 that i have for two years as it's more reliable and transfer speeds are higher than Samsung.

I know this but mine hasn't died. It has been doing this from the first day. It's working though. Can't tell for sure what has caused it to be erased but it was done in seconds.
Fortunately my photos were synced on the PC and so I recovered them from there.

oh this.
its likely caused due to when u mount yr sd card to yr pc and fail unmount it properly from the pc b4 disconnecting it.
Try photorec - if the data is physically still on the card, it will find it. No fancy interface but imo the best file recovery program out there

Format your external SD card via the phone settings, and use Kies to re-sync your content. Mine was originally formatted as FAT32 and I'd dragged and dropped the music and photos onto it via my computer. I don't quite understand the mechanism responsible, but this seems to be the source of my phone's unusual battery drain. Android System battery utilisation has dropped markedly, and battery life is greatly extended. I noticed the media scanner working for a few hours after I initially inserted the SD card, however after formatting and reloading via Kies the media scanner didn't run, yet all the content shows up where it should. I can only guess that some process responsible for indexing the media was running amok? Either way it's now able to sit in flight mode overnight without dropping a single %, whereas previously it'd drop at least 6%. In active use the display now always sits at the top of the battery use table rather than Android System, usually by a large margin :victory:

Much, much better. Oddly the Gallery app now shows more album artwork that was always located on the external SD card, but obviously was not being properly indexed. So far today I've got 3.5 hours of screen-on time and still have 58% battery capacity. Previously it'd have been that low with no screen time.

1. What's your Android System vs Screen now in terms of usage of the battery (% wise). And how was it before you did this little trick?
2. How should I go about putting everything back onto my SD Card (backups, pics. apps, etc.)? I've never used Kies before so I have no idea what to do lol.
3. All you did was go to settings, then storage and hit format sd card, correct?

You're not annoying me, honest, that's why I shared my results here ;P
1: Android System is currently 13%, screen is 29%. Previously Android System would be over 30% no matter what and often much higher if I didn't use the phone much that day.
2: Copy everything off your SD card onto your computer using whichever method you currently use. In Kies there's a file browser icon that lets you browse the contents of your phone, as well as copy things to and from it. You don't have to use the automated sync tools in Kies, you can simply drag and drop using the Kies browser.
3: Yup, that is correct. Not sure if it's maybe formatted using exFAT now, but I believe that's Android's preferred format these days.
I think I formatted my new SD card when I put it in the phone but not sure.
Is there any way to check and see what the card is formatted to? exFAT? Fat32? It was a brand new Samsung card.
I'm not really seeing bad battery life at all just curious.

Yup, you can put everything back on to the external SD card via Kies.

i'm also getting massive android system use for seemingly no good reason, and it started like 4 days ago, my phone was fine before that.

My phone heats up then mediaserver is at 40% :/ how do i get rid of it? i tried to do some searching and came up with turning off Quick connect, Samsung push services but this still happens. i dont have any SD card mounted too. im on sm-900f. any fix for this? currently i restart the phone but it usually happens again after i restart >_<

Mediaserver is just a generic category. You need to find out what app is using mediaserver. It's, as you might imagine, probably a media app e.g. audio or video player. An app like GSAM would help you track that down.
There is also an app that kills mediaserver every x hours. But it would be more effective to find the actual app that is the root cause.

Had the same problem. Happened to be some youtube-downloaded videos that I had recently downloaded and were somehow corrupted. Renamed then to .old and mediaserver disappeared right away. I've heard it also happens with big m3u or playlist files.

I just had this problem for 2 days. Media server is sipping the phone's battery at 45%. First, I tried turning off the phone and restart but it didn't solve the problem. But just this morning, when I was not connected to wifi, the media server disappeared. Then when I reconnected, it was completely gone (well, for now). That's just my observation. I have microsd with lots of data and media but I did not delete any of them. It like it went away on its own. :/
If you have an external SD card it's easy to reproduce the problem, just mount / unmount and you will see it starting / stopping. With internal you can backup the whole card and start deleting folders till it stops. It is cause of a faulty file, you just have to find it
I had the same problem, 45% battery used by media server on galaxy s5 stock rom. I solved problem by finding corupted file on micro sd card. I had 5 GB on micro sd. I have created folder name "backup" on internal storage. Then I select all files on sd and moved it to internal memory in "backup" folder. It took some time. At the end is says that it can't move two files. All other files were moved. Those to files were corrupted. The files which remains on sd card were videos taken with phone and when you tried to watch them they were freezing. I have format micro sd and at the end move everything back from backup folder to sd. Problem solved.

Morning ladies and gents, apologies if this is a duplicate post but this one has me stumped.
Since yesterday when copying some video files to my galaxy note 3, the phone has started over heating and draining the battery.
This happens whether the phone is in use or in my pocket hence the title of the thread.
I deleted the video files i copied, ran a full scan removed any heavy use apps and 3 times it has had a full charge in the last 24 hours and it overheats within seconds. I did a soft reset, left the battery out for a while and again overheating.
Is there something obvious I am missing, the phone doesnt appear to lag at all, just get really hot.
It has been suggested I do a backup then full factory reset, but this seems a tad drastic. Can anyone suggest anything to help?

Thanks fella, found a whole thread, looks like combined issues of SD card, pdf files and indexing.
Found a 1gb of PDF's on the sd card deleting now to see what happens

Also i noticed yesterday when copying the video files it converted first before copying, so i have deleted all files and I am testing at the moment

ok so i have resorted to formatting the SD card, removing it from the phone and seeing what happens
not sure if it is a faulty SD card
if all else fails I will full factory reset and then pray
Make sure to drop a .nomedia file in every folder that you don't need to see in the gallery/music player. That excludes all files in that folder (and folders inside that folder) from the mediascanner and indexing service.

I am interested in this my Note 3 Sm-n9005 started over heating the other day. It got really hot I had my usb stick attached otg never had problems before...originally thought it was the rom (Dirty Unicorns latest 4.4.4 Kit kat) when the phone got hot really slow to respond. I disconnected the usb.....factory wiped, then dalvick and cache. rebooted and still heating up really rapidly. Noticed OTG not working, then flashed samung based rom Omega 24 all is well no heating up, however OTG still not working.
Then restored Xnote 21 rom all good no heating up issues.....still no OTG...... phone working fine. But wonder if heating up has caused hardware issue....any help appreciated
I was having a problem with an unusually high battery drain with my LG G3. I also began to notice a few corrupted images.
So I turned my G3 off and removed my microSD card. I inserted it into a USB microSD card adapter & plugged it into my PC.
I ran a check on the card using DiskGenius (free) and saw it had some problems. My solution:
1. Used DiskGenius to fix exFat file system problem (not perfect).
2. Backed up all the files on my microSD card to my PC using EaseUs Todo Backup (free)
3. Formatted the card to exFat again using the SD Card Formatter (free)
4. Restored all my files back to my microSD card.
Now my battery life is amazing again and any app that accesses the microSD card is faster!
Hope this helps some of you.

The file system on the microSD card can get corrupted. When that happens and the phone tries to access a corrupted file, it might take multiple file reads (to compare the results of reading the same location) and/or more CPU cycles (performing error correction) to read the file, either of which drain power from the battery.
Corrupted files can also cause certain apps to crash.
Also, depending upon what version Android you have, sometimes when the Android media scanner encounters a corrupted mp3 it will scan the file over and over, draining the battery (this is a common problem).
Note that what I'm suggesting in my OP does not fix the corrupted files, it only fixes the cause (exFat file system corruption). The corrupted files must still be fixed or deleted.
Reformatting your microSD card should be done whenever there is a sudden and unexplained power drain, or once every three years.

Assuming it is a real 7500mah battery, that fixed the battery drain symptom, but not the file corruption or device slowdown.
That is actually a great thing to remember if having SD card issues, much appreciated.
However the title seems to be misleading. Even if there was a corrupted file on the SD card, it would not cause a significant impact on battery usage. I guess maybe if a poorly coded app (ie: with no error catching) continuously tries to access a corrupted file, maybe. But even then... I just don't see it. Also, quality and fast SD cards are so cheap now, I think a more practical solution would just be to replace the card.
A corrupted SD card can cause significant battery drain for the reasons I already explained. Besides myself, others have already experienced this problem espcially if an mp3 file is corrupted.
I replaced my SD card with a bigger one, but some people can't always afford that.
