Having trouble updating my Oneplus 5 from Nougat to Oreo - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

I've been trying to do this for a few days and unfortunately the problem just seems to get worse. The only ROMs that work are Nougat roms such as the ResurrectionRemix I'm running currently. Sadly, this is my second time coming back to it and more and more phone functions keep failing. For example, at this moment WiFI and the fingerprint reader are out of commission. Whenever I try to flash an Oreo Rom I get an error message in red.
If anyone can help I would appreciate it!

[Help] Back after long time, huge amount of confusion

Hello,
It's been almost a little over a year since I was last really into android customization. Since it's been so long it has become clear to me that my phone is outdated in many ways. I'm still running OxygenOS 2.2.1 with Android 5.1.1. I've been wanting to update up to Android N (7.x.x) for a long time now, but haven't seen any real stable roms or haven't really had the time to look for one. Now I've finally found my self with free time and ready upgrade my rom. I've just faced couple of problems, I can't really find what should I do when upgrading from 5.1.1 to 7.x.x since no-one is really doing that anymore. I remember reading sometime back that if you dont have the right firmwares you'll brick ur phone, and I wouldn't really want to go through that hassle at the moment. Is it still a thing or should it be just fine for me to flash a new rom just on top of this? (Ofc with clearing memory etc) Other question that is in my mind is that is there any critical bugs in Android N roms? It's bit unclear to me since there are such many roms that have their status as work in progress or beta etc, but some roms have status as stable. Are there any roms that I should clearly avoid? Im not new to this so I don't really need any deep info how to do everything etc, just a bit of a oversight on how things are going atm.
Thanks.
first of all is ur device rooted?? If yes then install the latest twrp recovery...then take a backup.. and flash any nougat rom which u like...If at all u would need Volte support then u l have to flash the 3.5.7 firmware..or else the 3.1.0 firmware works fine with most of the nougat roms..some nougat roms i would recommend are AICP, Resurrection Remix and AOSP extended .... In my suggestion u should probably first upgrade the Oxygen Os on ur device through official updates via OTA atleast upto the 3.5.6 firmware
there's no need to update until 3.5.6, unless you aren't going to plan staying with OOS [the only "stable" firmware which provides you VoLTE working, but it's still M-based and not N].
as @mhd athiq said, unlock your bootloader [just in case you still haven't done it before] then update your TWRP recovery to the latest version.
then flash the incrementals OTAs until OOS 3.1.x and you are good to go to flash any custom ROM which is N-based.
to avoid any mistake, please make a EFS backup via terminal [just to have a backup of your modems] and save the files to a safe location.
I don't have a specific ROM to suggest to you, but in my experience I have found the CAF/AOSP-based ones to be the ones with the best battery backup and less bugs then LOS-based ones.
I have used happily for a few months CypherOS version 3.5.1 [not the latest one, I find it quite unstable as the developers tried to implement OMS].
sidenote:
flashing N-based custom ROMs upon OOS 3.5.6 firmwares gives random reboots and unstable network in many cases/scenarios.
so don't update to that OOS version unless you have a mandatory VoLTE feature required [but you'll have to live with random reboots and poor network stability].

Sleep of death in all Nougat ROMs

The global trouble with all nougat firmware
Hi guys. I amn't alone, I met 10-15 users at 4pda with such problem.
We have the bug at all nougat roms by any devs with different trees...
The sleep of death.
Personally I notice it after/during mobile internet using, but I'm not sure. For long time at home(for a week, for example) with WiFi I have no troubles. But if I am anywhere without WiFi and use 3g(don't have LTE in my country), my phone "sleeps" for some times during just one day... It isn't powered off as it's needed 10-15 seconds of button pressing to turn it on at least.
As the ROM and developer has no meaning I guess that here are the errors in the kernel. @fir3walk says that here are many bugs in our nougat tree and perhaps the trouble is involved in last_dmesg... Or some system force stopes, dozes work improperly.
Not many users have this trouble but it exists an a fact. So it would be great to detect an error and try to fix it. Perhaps not in nougat, at least in new Oreo(I haven't tried it yet so no information about this bug there). We have many ROMs, they are updated for some times a week, new roms are rolling out... But the bug stays still.
If someone else has such problem, write here. Perhaps somebody has any ideas and together we will be able to find solution...
So, all the devs who can detect an error, write us... Any tests, information, logs, etc.
P.S. By the way it is impossible to write logs of powering off(deep sleeping) via logcat or another's. If I run the logging I have no "sleepOFdeath".
It is really global trouble so let's try to fix it together.
I'm sorry for your trouble.
Lets start by figuring out which device is in question
I have a 3s prime and never saw this issue.
So do you have a 3s or 3x or 3s prime?
Hello OP, can i ask if you installed that MIUI Ported ROM based in nougat? Because when i installed it (twice) y faced this issue in every rom that i flashed afterwards, then decided to clean-flash miui fastboot rom and the problem was solved.
Maybe that's your problem.
i face it in rr rom but no in dnd rom
Guys did anyone here with the sod, flash global stable/developer in edl mode?

Hello. No, I didn't try miui based on nougat.
But other users say that they notice such trouble at miui(7 android) as well.
So it isn't the cause...
Also about my phone:
Redmi 3s, 2/16, 2016030, FPC, aa1 motherboard.

Will try to flash via miflash, as I faced no problems before this SOD at 7.1.2. Always flashed my phone via twrp.
By the way, guys, my 3s sleeps well on nougat, but it isn't econom in active mod.
For example, I have made a record at our device at 6.0.1 version - 17.5 hours of screen. Nougat isn't so optimized by now... 10-11 as maximum.

resurrection remix oreo - stable?

Hello folks.
I was tracking down a mobile data problem I was having...as part of the troubleshooting, I was installing a bunch of different ROMs (LOS nougat, RR nougat, RR oreo). I found the solution to my problem after installing RR oreo, but the ROM itself was not the solution; it was a configuration problem.
Anyway, I'd just as soon not reinstall again, so my question: is RR oreo stable enough for everyday use? Or should I go back to nougat before I configure all the apps on my phone?
Thanks.
Both of are as good as it can be.
it depend on personal choice.
Both are good, some people have a few bugs with rotation on oreo I think.
No issues on my end worth mentioning.
However the battery drain is there on all oreo roms, more than nougat. On my old stock battery i get 4-5 hours SoT, and it seems like that for most people. Depending what you do.
Removing NFC is supposed to help, haven't tried myself.
But for myself, I've tried RR and now trying AEX. Both are fantastic, RR offers a little more customization and wake screen on waving. Crdroid has an oreo rom now too I believe that I haven't tried yet.
Do a clean flash to avoid problems. It also requires latest twrp or you'll likely receive an error on flashing.
I've rooted with magisk and all is well.

Camera not working on two of my 580s, when rooted.

I have two of these devices. One for each of my kids. I'm very familiar with rooting various devices, from Amazon Tabs to my Pixel 2xl. I've rooted both of my kids' devices for several reasons. Regardless, the camera app fails to load. It just goes black. I've been strictly messing with Stock Rooted firmware. The latest November Security 8.1 release. I was able to briefly get it working on my daughter's device but now it's not working again.
Has anyone else had this issue or know anything about it?? It is driving me NUTS.
Am I REALLY the only one with this issue? I've tried two methods to get the cameras working. I've set up a straight Stock Rom and then rooted it. I've also flashed TWRP and installed the pre-rooted Oreo Stock ROM found here in the forums. I'd love to try one of the AOSP ROMS buy my wife would have a fit.

Screen auto-rotation

I know this is a mostly dead platform, but figured it was worth a shot to ask. My Trek 2 stopped auto-rotating the screen awhile back while it was stock. I had not updated in awhile, so I tossed in an AT&T sim to get it up to date. I did not notice it at first (I use the tablet intermittently) but I am almost certain that update coincided with the screen no longer rotating.
After several months and being tired of manually rotating the screen I took the time to put AOKP on it. Part of my desire was hoping to resolve the screen rotation. It did not. But, I did see a comment in one of the ROM threads where it looked liked someone had the identical issue and it might be related to the software or a minor difference in hardware. Does anyone have any ideas?
Some K88 tablets' auto-rotating only works with MM, not Nougat. Check your current firmware. It will be 7.0.1 or something above 7.0.0, not 6.X.X
The only solution is by flashing K88 back to MM. Sometimes, directly flashing B33 still may not work. So I recommend to flash B31, and then upgrade to B33, but not again to Nougat. Once update to Nougat, then the auto-rotating will not work again. I tried all custom firmware(nougat + oreo), but my K88 auto-rotating is not working with them.
To flash back to B31, you need to install TWRP using jasminetool. And then directly flash B31 stock firmware.

Thanks for chiming in! Any idea what the limitation is? I have LineageOS installed right now, it runs great other than the rotation issue. It looks like all of the custom ROMs are Nougat based, is my only option to go back to stock to get auto-rotation back?
