Facebook asking for super user rights - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hi guys
Since yesterday, my Facebook app asks me for superuser rights. Of course I refused, but since then a toast often appears to tell me that Magisk refused the app to access the SU rights. It means that the app keeps trying to access it. Even when the app runs in background.
I tried to clear the data and cache of the app, but it still asks for root permissions
Does it happen to anyone else ? Any idea why it happens ?

Well that's really strange, I've never ever had that happen to me, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Facebook? Not sure why it would even ask for root rights, doesn't seem right to me

Are you using the official version of Facebook from google play or modded version ?

This also happened on a family members phone after upgrading to the most current FB version
(as of 16.may.2018) of course using GooglePlay to do the update.

I do find such behaviour quite devious coming from a social app...

I have started getting this today on my OnePlus One on lineage OS with magisk installed. Maybe fb have added it in with a recent update. Very suspicious though! I get a toast message every 10 seconds saying its been denied superuser rights. Only stops when I close the app. Ive tried clearing data and reinstalling the app (from play store). No luck so far!

This started happening to me just now. It was specifically when I visited a news article (and not before) which displayed within facebook's own browser (rather than launching another app to render it). The toast went away when I restarted the app, but when I found that news article again the toasts started again too. The toasts continue even when facebook is just in the background. It's hard to tell if it's the website somehow causing facebook to request superuser access, or if it's actually built in to facebook (and if so *why* they're asking for it? Is it to provide additional services to websites?). I don't know if it's every site within facebook's browser or just the one I was on that caused it to start. I'd be very interested to the circumstances that caused it to happen for other people...
It is the official facebook app, on a Oneplus 5 running OxygenOS 5.1.1. The version of facebook is 172.0.0.66.93 (updated on 15 May 2018) and I just installed the update 14 hours ago.

Strange Gmail update?

Dear forum,
I'm having a strange issue with gmail and I haven't seen any other references on the forum.
About a week ago, Gmail auto-updated in the Play store, and since that time the icon changed to a "postage stamp" with a "G" on it. The application itself is now dark-themed in the conversation list, though the message text background is still white (the dark/light issue makes some of the text difficult to read).
This application is really broken now, and I don't see anyone else complaining about it, so I'm curious why this ended up on my tablet.
I've tried wiping the data and cache and reinstalling google apps -- the old Gmail is restored, but when I reboot the bizarro Gmail comes right back.
Has anyone experienced this? I'm worried about some malicious app update, but I'm not sure where to go from here.
Thanks for any suggestions.
I'm rooted on stock with the latest updates.

I'm afraid I haven't heard of any issue like this.
If you're reinstalling google apps (I'm assuming via flashing through a recovery), are you sure you're using an official / trusted package from a trusted source?
If the G-apps package is from a malicious or untrusted source this may explain why you can't uninstall it correctly and it has that weird type of persistence.
You can always get a trusted version of the G-apps package from the Goo Manager app from the play store (The app is free and without ads!).
I hope this helps in some way. Sorry I can't offer a more direct answer

In app billing not working

Hi fellows,
So I was reading about how to root my phone and use the app freedom, you know to buy in app goods, so I did root my phone and installed freedom, it worked fine however now after a while I'm having this issue, my in app billing service is not working.
Whenever I try to buy anything from an app it just doesn't pop the validation window and on some apps, such as fleksy doesn't show the buy button only a get button which does not do anything.
I have kitkat 4.4.2, I have tried to erase the google play store cache, I have modified the host file, including a # at the beginning of 127.0.0.1; I have unistalled the freedom app and still wasn't able to fix my problem.
In one of the apps I got the message: unable to connect to android market billing, which makes me think it is the service is not working properly or even worst, I got banned.
Any ideas?
I highly appreciate your help and comments.
did you disable freedom before uninstalling?

I did, I also installed it again and still same issue.
Well, I just spent over 30 minutes between 4 reps with Samsung, none of them could fix it and sent a ticket to "developers"; being an IT professional and frustrated, even more so, I poked around a bit and found the fix.
Go to Galaxy Apps in your Application Manager, click on "storage". Clear both data and cache, relaunch Galaxy Apps and you should be good to go (I was at this point). All fixed for me.

System dump?

Hi so been on 7.0 for at least a month and just last two days phone was being really buggy so I turned the phone off and back on phone didn't prompt for password to boot.
Is there a way I can save the whole phone on to drive to send to someone to take a closer look to see what virus is on here Im guessing it's a rootkit some how also what way would you run packet capture to see things that way?

a virus would be software related...if you did a full wipe and installed fresh software and it continues it might be an app you keep installing...do you get your apps from the playstore or side load as well

playstore only before my phone was locked boot loader and encrypted to have to use pin to boot device.
AS SOON as i get the buggy phone and reboot when it boots up it no longer request pin to boot. on stock rom i was rebooting phone every week to see how long it would take and usually nothing odd until phone got buggy for reason of the reboot.
the buggy issue is shortly opening an app the app will freeze so i hit home nothing happends try to turn the screen off nothing happends until a minute later sometimes phone will reboot its self or i hold power to make it reboot but both take about same amount of time when phone goes into full freeze.
so it being a playstore app and the virus not getting detected google needs to look into how they can patch this...
so im putting this out there so this person or group doesnt forever have a backdoor into peoples phones.
this issue i have had since november last year but havent been so aware about the issue till august. since august ive been dealing with know some how they are getting in and must be an app but i got rid of all games and weird apps that are not nessisary
abs workout, esfile explorer, google+,mint personal finance, tapatalk, accuweather, alaskausafcu, amazon kindle, android auto, android device manager, android pay, calculator, chrome browser, chrome remote desktop, clock, cloud print, contacts, es task manager, facebook, family locator, favorite frequencies, fing, garmin connect, gci my usage, gmail, google, google calendar, google camera, google docs, google drive, google goggles, google keep, google keyboard, google news, google now launcher, google opinion, google photos, google play games, google play music, google txt to speech, hulu, keeper, look out, malwarebytes, maps, messenger, eset mobile security, pandora, playstation phone, phone, shazam, sixaxis controller, skype, speed test, usaa mobile, vlc for android, wifi analyzer, xbox, youtube, zombies run
these are all the apps ive had since ive had this issue.
i was hopping that esfiles exploreres new feature of being notified of new files would help solve this but some folders it doesnt detect like youtube or google music even though in es files explorer i unlocked ability to view the .nomedia
Drop ES File Explorer, to start. Read this article, or do some googling about it on your own;
https://www.androidpit.com/this-is-why-you-should-not-use-es-file-explorer
I have to agree with the article when it says Solid Explorer is a great replacement. I've used it for years now and it's never let me down.
The fact of the matter is, if you manually wiped all of your phone and formatted your internal storage, nothing remains from pre-wipe. If your issue is coming back it can only be a hardware issue (if applicable) or some app you are using, as previously mentioned.
Furthermore, after googling your exact issue I came to find that certain apps that require 'Accessibility Services' can and will disable your pin/password/pattern on boot. Check if any of your apps fit the bill in 'Settings > Accessibility > Services'
Disable any apps which are enabled and reboot. You may have to set up pin, etc., again, but leave the services disabled and see if the issue returns. Let us know!
Edit: Upon more googling, I've found reports of people who had the issue return after disabling & uninstalling the apps in question as well. You may need to flash stock images again and do not install any apps that require accessibility services, or don't grant any of them permission even once.
Edit2: Just another link to check out;
https://blog.g3rt.nl/android-lollipop-encryption-user-interface-flaw.html
Edit3: Issue tracker link; https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=219498
Edit4: If you logged into your bank app and factory reset or flashed factory images, logging in again after the wipe/flash will show as a new device. Same goes for having login alerts set for Google / Facebook, etc. Your same phone shows as a new device after the flash or wipe. Guaranteed not a virus.

Thank you! I tried googling but guess I wasn't doing it properly.
I turned off keeper nothing.
I un installed it nothing.
I dont know how to re enable boot encryption pin.
the phone says it is so I'll try clean install again and just not allow keeper anymore I think the issue has come up just after turning keeper on to allow the accessibility features.
Thank you I will keep you informed give it till February if nothing odd happened.

suspicious device administrator

So ive noticed more or less since 12/23 ive had a strange device admin and i cant disable or remove it ant there is no app in drawer for it. Pacage disabler pro doesent work on it. Ive already disabled every system app as possible ive also disabled just about every permission on all apps as possible i dont keep any activities or background process EVER i tend to mostly run a GOOGLE FREE or foss apps i dont like accounts or constant synching. I like to be in control of my device for the mostpart, ive cleared useless clutter from my storage at one point the app device admin dissapeared afterwards and reapeared after a reboot as i thought it would ... i know of various ways to get acces to a phone but this one is itching me im more curious to see whats triggering it heres a screenshot.
That's odd. Did you recently install maybe a work email or some type of Outlook exchange email?
No i didnt. How can i know if someone did or how eould that affect admin

Facebook app cant be uninstalled?

Why the hell can i not uninstall the facebook app? I only received the phone like an hour ago but so far iam very happy! No issues etc I was just uninstalling some apps however and was quiet please that theres very little bloatware but the one remaining app i want to delete 'Facebook' cannot be deleted! Why? The facebook app was always an app that was up to the user wether they wanted it or not! After all..... not everyone uses facebook and not everyone wants to use the app so why force it on us with no option to uninstall?

No mine is factory unlocked! Ironically theres very little bloatware on this device in comparison to previous devices! Iam impressed!! Facebook is probably the only app pre installed that i don't want but sadly i cannot uninstall it
I think Facebook is part of operating system installed on the phone, so it's kind of permanent, but you can disable it and that was the first thing I did on my phone. However for some strange reason facebook installation manager is used by Oculus to install it's VR applications and since my kids use VR to play sometimes, I had to enable it back, but facebook application itself can be disabled.

Almost all samsung apps were indeed uninstallable this time around, which impressed me, too. I think if you really wanted to get rid of FB, you'd have to root your phone and delete the APK from the system partition.
just disable it, it's better than nothing
Yeah I was pretty puzzled too. Weird that they have Facebook as a system app.

There are 2 Facebook apps on my phone: Facebook app installer and Facebook app manager, you can disable manager but keep the installer for Oculus to work. BTW you won't see the installer until you enable system apps.
I rarely use facebook, but when I do I use it on either chrome or the samsung browser. I use it in facebook mobile mode, but when I want to check any messages I have to switch over to desktop mode as mobile mode will prompt to install facebook messenger. Bottom line, you don't need the facebook app to use facebook, use chrome or samsung browser (lately I am finding I like samsung internet better as it seems to make text the proper size to be more easily readable and also you can add an extension to sync your chrome bookmarks and history to the samsung internet browser) - anyway, use one of these browsers in mobile mode. The facebook app has too many permissions and location following for my tastes. Eff that. I disable it with package disabler pro.
Facebook is needed to do VR. If it's not enabled oculus doesn't launch.

It looks like Samsung made deals with companies which are kinda like enemies to each other. For example messaging apps:
Google - CHECK
Facebook - CHECK
Microsoft- CHECK
Samsung - CHECK

A friend called me using facebook on pc and asked me to help him call a taxi to his home and he told me the address cos his phone was dead and he couldnt call. I ended the FB call and called my usual taxi number (gsmcall) . Ususally, someone picks up and asks where you want the taxi... But instead i get computer voice saying "press 3 if you need taxi for "my friend's address" I didnt give anyone the address and it wasnt even written. but somehow the computer knew where i wanted to call taxi for. I ended the call without speaking to anyone cos it was strange and later i received sms that taxi was waiting. A taxi lady called to tell me my taxi was waiting then i asked her how they sent taxi to me without me giving her the address. she ignored my question and told me taxi is waiting.. then the taxi guy left.
It was scary..
So i went to my facebook app and messenger app to check the app permissions (there are so many permissions granted to facebook without your permission and you dont have access to disable it.. "like record your calls without your knowledge, and many more.."
i found this paid appp "advanced permission remover" it helps u view all those permissions you dont have access to and dissable them, the app creates new apk and the you uninstall the one you have before installing the new app.
But i get error message that "app cant be installed because its conflicting with app that have the same name" both fb and messenger...
I found a way to unistall facebook from system using computer without rooting my Note 8 which i can tell you but it didnt help. After uninstalling, I still cant install my modified fb app. It still says app is conflicting and when i install from playstore, atleast to have it as user app not system app. the facebook app installs itself back to system and you cant uninstall. So you have to do the whole process again using pc if you dont want it
i dont know why FB has to be a system app and the rate at which facebook spys on you is ridiculous.. if you having a discussion about someone and your phone is close to you. after a period of time, that person shows up as friend suggestion..
pls suggest a good third party app to use instead of the main facebook app

Do you have an unlocked S8 or a sim-locked one?
If the latter, Facebook app could be part of the bloatware installed by your carrier.
Download BK package disabler (samsung ) from the play store. The app can remove system apps without root. Btw Facebook wasn't system app on my S8 I can easily delete from my phone.
