It is time for a new phone, my Moto X Style (Pure) on T-Mobile is getting a bit long in the tooth.
1) storage is only 16GB so even with the few apps I use, I have to clear cache to update apps (photos, videos, etc all goto the SD Card)
2) signal is crap at times and call quality suffers
3) Lenorola is starting to slack on Android update time frames, they use to be quick with the last two Moto X and now they are getting behind (even with security updates)
I am on T-Mobile and I mainly do alot of audio (BT), some pictures and video, and the rest is just FB, Email, Text, Web Browsing
My choices are to go with the V20 and root it to get a few apps that I need
or wait and order a Pixel XL (128GB) and ride the google update train again.
I was faced with the same decision.. 16GB is just a non-starter for me, and I couldn't wait for the 128GB version to become available. Also Google's hardware didn't completely impress me.. I picked up the V20 coming from the Note 7.. honestly my plan is to run with it until the Note 8 comes out more than likely. I think the Google phone will have a longer lifespan and obviously quicker updates.. but I needed a phone and couldn't wait for the 128GB version to come out. Also the price difference was pretty significant compared the Verizon's price on the V20.. so that was a factor as well.
Overall the V20 didn't 'wow' me like the Note 7 did.. but its still a very good phone and for the $650 or so I got it for I am happy.. I don't think the Pixel XL would have wowed me either to be honest after having the Note 7 though.
The last LG phone I had was the G4 and that was a bit of a let down.
Since I am on T-Mobile coming from a Moto X Pure (3rd Gen) I won't get any trade in value at all (keeping it as a backup)
It is $30 a month for the V20 on T-Mobile, or I buy the Pixel XL and get $325 in credit over 24 months which will take away some of the hit over time for the Pixel XL
I am leaning to the V20 right now, especially because of how on top of updates LG has appeared to become. I just hate the bloat, hopefully there are good fixes for that or someone later releasing a cleaned up stock rom

Pick the Pixel for:
- better camera (especially video stabilization)
- fast updates and longer lifespan
- better one-handed usage
- fluid software experience
- looks (subjective I know, but I kinda like it and it has no camera hump)
Lg v20 for:
- removable battery
- better sound experience
- military grade drop protection
- manual camera mode if that's your thing
- expandable storage
- second screen is useful sometimes
I obviously went with the v20. Unlocked bootloader on T-Mobile and root on it fixes some software problems. Although I wouldn't complain if I had went with the Pixel either
I'm currently facing the EXACT dilemma.
After reading your comments, I think I might pick up the T-mobile version of the V20 instead.
Since we still do not have an official V20 root for the Canadian model.
Looks like I am leaning to the V20 as well. Mainly for the camera, screen, audio.
Even if we get a stock cleaned up ROM later then it would be perfectly fine.
Not sure about your options in your part of the world, but here in New Zealand the pixel XL is $1400 while i bought the V20 for $900. So yea, no explanation needed

I came from the nexus 6P which I loved to this phone and to honest I love the battery life and everything it has to offer so far. Up in Canada they are offering the B&O H3 headphones plus 200 off which was 799 for the whole package which is a wicked deal
I have the Tmo V20 and I didn't feel like there was much bloat...well compared to AT&T's devices. Coming from the N7 my only gripe is the low light pictures come out gainier than the N7. I hated the edge screen on the N7 but I really dig the second screen on the V20. The screen isn't as saturated as an AMOLED screen, but in everyday use I don't notice it. Done call the V20 ugly, but I honestly love the looks. Of course most people throw a case on their device, so does that even matter?

If you listen to BT audio a lot stop hesitating and go get the LGv20 and grab a pair of BT headphones with Aptx support (lgv20 one of only a couple phones that support it.) I have these and they are awesome.

Honestly paying that much for a mere 128 gb is outrageous. For $400-500 like the old Nexus phones... sure I might be convinced to give up the extensive list of V20 features some of which were not even present in the Note 7. I see the Pixel XL like the Android version of the IPhone 7's business model: add a camera that's nice but doesn't blow the others out of the water anymore, give it a short shelf life with limited storage and non-removable battery (so that you MUST upgrade after 12 months), put a lot of emphasis on zippy when the competition are pretty zippy already. Overall a pretty meh exterior design like the V20 and Iphone7. The Note is prettier but that finger print magnet back is a chore and I had enough of TouchWiz lagging down the experience compares to the V20.
I have a YouTube Red account. With a 250 GB Samsung micro SD ($70 eBay) and 64 GB on board I have so much content I don't know what do with.
I picked up two new TVs on black Friday. I use the V20 IR blaster with both. Same for the Kinivo HDMI splitter, no more fumbling with that little easy to lose clicker.
The V20 has Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, which the others don't have, is like one of the best V20 features. I use a 3.0 Anker PowerCore+ 10k mAh power bank ($40 Amazon) with an iOrange-E type C cable and the V20 absolutely flies from 40%-80%.
The second screen is probably the most useful feature I can switch to different songs on Amazon music app, use it as the zoom wheel in video recording, allows for more fluid app switching than interrupting the main screen just to use the multitasking soft button. And the quad DAC actually drives my V-Moda M100s. I wanted to test this against the Note 7 but the Fire Department said no can do homey. And rumor is no more headphone jack on new Samsungs. You'll have to spend $300 on Bluetooth Bose headphones with as good a sound as upper mid tier wired cans.
Honestly...even if V20, Note 7, iphone 7 and Pixel XL were all priced the same it would be a no brainer for me as far as useful features I rely on every day.
For me, it was a price per gb difference, and a looks thing. I came off an S6 Edge, and for me, the Pixel looks like an iPhone minus the home button. Yeah, it's on 7.1, and will get updates sooner (but I'm on Verizon so it's bound to be slower no matter which one). The smaller capacity model would never work for me, I download too many movies and stuff for that. My Edge was 64 and that was a decent balance between saving until I downloaded it off to the computer. Plus I get the expansion slot for more just because you never know. Could care less about the removable battery, but to some it's a plus. The camera seems to be subjective on video reviews, between people that prefer one over the other. I use a DSLR for anything important, so it's not a deal-breaker for me, and it takes pictures just fine for my eyes anyway. I didn't buy it as a camera, I bought it as a phone. And I know the LG G2 I had was rooted pretty quickly if memory serves, and just browsing seems like we've got a good group tackling that now (missed that on my S6). So in the end, the cost savings, and the aesthetics won me over between the two, with everything else basically being a wash either way. Plus, coming from the other phone, every time a gal looks at it, they always seem to say "Wow that's big". Simple pleasures, but it never gets old
By the way, NetFlix now has downloads. As does Amazon video and YouTube Red. I see no win with a phone that kills micro SD.

Believe it or not I returned the S8 and got mine. I'm freakin stoked by what LG has to offer. This my 1st non samsung phone and its rooted.
I ended up selling my V20 it was glitch fest everywhere even after several factory resets and the batter drain was bad.....I do miss the extra camera and the DAC but outside of that I love the S8+. This is my first Samsung phone since the note 3.

I am kind of on the same page. I jumped on the v20 from a note 4. My note 4 had less bugs, better battery life, and a better screen. "Auto" picture quality was much better on the note.
Things i will miss about the V20/Pros
~ Full manual camera controls and the wide angle lens
~ DAC
~ Second display
~ Build Quality
~ Removable Battery
***Biggest complaint by far is Battery life.. From my Pokemon Go experience specifically, my Girlfriend has a iPhone 6s. My note 4 battery life was better than hers. My V20 is literally half that of hers now. Same apps installed across both phones. Phone gets HOT.

It is a great phone, but I though I've heard that a new 6P could be had for around $350 or so. $460 is very close to what it was at launch. but even still at what the Pixel and they new S8 and G6 will cost, that will still be a a very good price comparatively speaking. I personally wouldn't pay more then say $350-$400 for one now at almost 18 months old.

I just bought a used Nexus 6p to replace a failing Moto X Pure Edition (2015) and I am extremely pleased with it so far. For longevity it's very hard to tell when you're talking about 4 years out but there is very little out there with the pure experience that is going to match the support the 6p will have. Battery life has been acceptable though not amazing. Charges very fast so that helps offset. Standby time has been excellent though screen on time is what really drains it. The camera takes great photos though the HDR+ processing is slower than I thought it would be (as is processing of the Blur effect when used).
The experience has been the best of any phone I've used. Everything is snappy and I don't get occasionaly slowdowns I used to get on every other phone I've used (Moto X, Note 4, HTC One, G2, S4). It's a bit heavier than I like and I keep a case on it because it is a bit slick with nothing on it but otherwise comfortable. I love finally having a phone with a fingerprint sensor and this one works great. I never have issues with it. Connectivity has been great with Wifi, 4G, bluetooth and GPS. No issues with any. Speakers are very good. Very similar quality to my Moto X Pure. Nice and loud and front facing.
I wish the camera sensor was a 16:9 ratio since I prefer taking all my photos that way. When you crop down to 16:9 on the 6p you're down to 8.3Mp which is a bit low for preserving detail. If you prefer 4:3 you won't have any complaints.
I run mine stock, rooted with google assistant enabled and my only complaint is that the stock launcher won't let you change the home screen grid size. I normally use Nova Launcher but I'm liking using the new icon quick shortcuts in Nougat (similar to the force touch actions on the iphone). Nova does this also but for some reason it doesn't work on the 6p (might have something to do with changing the model to a Pixel to enable google assistant).
By the way, I picked mine up used for $310 (64Gb).
read about the battery and boot loop issues. the 6p has issues. either the batteries are sub-par or there are software issues. many people have significant problems. hauwei will repair, but we have no real idea what is wrong and if there
if a real fix coming in the future.
i will be receiving a free placement from google--my phone was purchased from google. i will buy extra batteries planning on getting 6 to 12 months on a battery. if i was buying new now, i am not sure what i would do. i personally loved my 6p when it was working well. now that is shuts off early without warning, it is problematic.
I love my 6P but if I could do it over I would probably spend the money on a different phone. I feel like the 6P is a time bomb with the boot loop of death and battery issues. Some people can't even get replacements for their RMA'd phones since the 6P is no longer being made or they are getting back badly dinged up ones that show significant signs of use and abuse. There are serious issues with this phone. Google blames the hardware and Huawei blames Google. If you get 4 years out of one of these it will probably be a miracle.

Pixel is great though, in many ways.
It was a much needed update from my aging Nexus 6.
Was briefly contemplating iPhone, but stuck with the Pixel.
Overall, I love the camera, the battery is a champ, and so far I feel no need or want to modify the device.
I think google did well with this one.
Let's hope LG doesn't botch the next one.

Unprecedented battery life.
Fast as Lightning (Especially w/sdcardfs)
No cracks or damage.
Best reception I have ever had.
Extremely challenging to hack. Very easy once you have the slots and Google stops playing games. Lol
Speaker sucks. But I can live with it.
Never have and never will buy anything but a Google phone.

I came from an S5 so anything would have been an upgrade for me. So this thing is screaming fast to me
I bought the phone after I had to send my Note 7 back. I liked it, but didn't keep it long. I've been through a few different phones in the meantime, but finally came back. It's faster than any phone I've used, and still feels really solid, and good in the hand

The positives of Pixel are the speed, battery life and the general smoothness of the phone.
The cons are pathetic speakers (What was google thinking?), huge bezels (which I find hard to digest coming from a lesser bezel N6) and the lack of development. On my N6 I had flashed almost 10 custom ROMs at different times.
There is hardly much choice for Pixel XL other than a handful ROMs. Perhaps the high price of the phone and the slot rigmarole turns off developers here.
I'm happy with the Pixel , but it was close to $900 and I just feel that I did not get my money's worth. That said, I can't deal with non-Google phones. Was thinking about a One Plus 5, but that's about it. Hopefully Google does something nicer with Pixel XL2.
I love stock Android and EAS is the best thing to happen to Android but..
Just can't justify the price for what you get. I'm a big Audio guy and the speaker is worst I've heard along with 3.5mm jack just sounds awful..
have to run an External DAC to make up for the poor quality
Video recording seems a bit meh blury/grainy no matter what I can't take a clear video unless it's in direct sunlight and then have to deal with the *Lense Flare* another pain in the ass
Rest of the phone is good
Development it's pretty much none existent seems like if you want roms/kernel's either stick with a 6P or OnePlus/Other China device
But I feel like it should of been priced at same as the 6P $440 we only got minor improvements nothing "WOW" to make up for the $300 extra..

I do miss the value days of the Nexus program. Minus Shamu of course. That was expensive. When I bought those Nexus, I felt like I was getting an incredible value for a smartphone.

I'll tell you by saying what I've chosen as my daily driver and where my SIM card is and what's in my pocket right now. I've had marlin since Nov '16 and iPhone 7 plus since Jan '17. The marlin is in my pocket right now. The iPhone 7 plus is a great device (iMessages, waterproof) but the reason I love android is the ability to modify (stock or ROM-root-kernel) and access to that SD Card. Otherwise the 2 are pretty much equal as to camera, battery, speed, smoothness, response to touches, etc. at least in my perception. So, obviously I'm very pleased with marlin since I prefer it to a very popular alternative. Had a Samsung Galaxy S7 in early 2016 but sold it after 2 months, Pixel much better device to me.

Agreed 100%. Thats why i skipped this one looking forward to the next one. For the price it must have stereo speaker, better audio, water resist, better design and quality. Oh and wireless charging. Then i will jump right in.

Six month user here. And my main complaint for the Pixel remains exactly same as it was back when I bought it. The sudden freezing problem. Just out of nowhere the screen freezes for a second or two, if I am playing a game, then its done, simply over, have to restart, and I can't express how much I hate that. Of course its most noticeable/affecting while gaming, but it happens basically everywhere too, but just less frustrating in other places.
I was advised to format the phone, not root it and blah blah but exact same happened there too, without installing any apps at all! Ridiculous problem and IMHO the most annoying issue Pixels have.
Other than this, I don't know, sometimes the low light photos come with a really weird greenish cast, completely off coloured and way too much noise (yeah with HDR+ On, that's the only one I use anyway) etc.
But other than these two, I have no complaints. Tremendous call quality, more than acceptable display (though still no Apple!), excellent GPS (though Google Maps says to calibrate compass every now and then), buttery smooth interface all around most times, at max volume the loudspeaker is excellent (though at half volume it can't be heard and equally ****e!), really low SAR value etc., I am contemplating the U11 now, just for the sound and camera, but if I don't go that route I am gonna keep this phone for at least two years, and the maximum I have ever used a mobile phone was for 15 months, the Galaxy S2 back in the days, should suffice what I think about this phone.
I also have the OnePlus 3 in office, and I know some people compare it and I can say its basically Guava vs Apples comparison.
PS: Sorry didn't comment about development, but I honestly don't care much about it at all. I bought the Pixel so that I won't be needing the optimise it, let Google optimise it for me, and they did a fairly decent job, but after using Franco kernel I can say Google could have done a much better job. So that's all I need, a custom kernel.
coming from Samsung and LG devices, this phone has been a breath of fresh air even with this new partition scheme. Phone does well, battery life holds up for two days. I just have an issue with bluetooth not consistently sending music info to my radio. Some days it works, other days it's like what music info...
It's great and definitely a worthy upgrade from my Nexus 6. The only thing I miss is the front facing speakers but I didn't use them much anyways, well that and I guess it's way more slippery than my Nexus 6 because I don't use cases at all.
Couldn't be happier. Presently have a 7 Plus and the XL that I swap my sim between. IPhone is great in many ways but I just keep coming back to the Pixel XL....something about the experience I get using it that I really enjoy.
As for the other characteristics of the device others have already commented. I purchased mine at launch and received it later October.
I currently have the Nexus 6P. Damn that is a nice phone! I'm seriously doubting anything will "crush" this phones performance. But I decided I wanted to move up to the Pixel XL. I'm a decent Android gamer, so the updated GPU was nice. Plus, the camera is supposedly just that much better. Among other things, like 4GB RAM instead of the 6P's 3GB.
I don't receive the Pixel XL until Monday, so I'm wearing a path through my foyer, pacing back and forth, waiting for it to arrive.
I've spent at LEAST 30 hours this week doing research on the Pixel, its partition layout, how to get root to work, TWRP limitations, etc. This is certainly more complicated than the 6P.
Part of the reason I decided to plop down for the Pixel, was because I didn't see a lot of development going for it, as there is for the 6P. And since people seem to like my ROMs, I figured I'd toss something out there that I made, and see what kind of life it can breathe into the Pixel.
I think I'll like it. Tried it out in-hand at BestBuy yesterday. Solid device, great screen, color accuracy is actually better than the 6P, and for the first time, I kind of like the phone WITHOUT a case! Never though I'd say that.
I've used iPhones since the 3GS up until the 6S Plus (all jailbroken). I decided to try out the Nexus 6P (first ever Android phone) and fell in love with it! Custom ROMs, kernels, tweaks, Xposed, etc. were all new to me and I loved every bit of it!
However, for some reason, I decided to sell it and pick up an iPhone 7 Plus when it released. As iOS matured, security got tighter, and jailbreaking became more difficult. I got tired of waiting for a jailbreak to release and realized how locked down the OS is (when not jailbroken) compared to Android.
I sold my 7 Plus and bought this Pixel XL. I wasn't a huge fan at first, just because of the confusion with the slots and the lack of development​ compared to the 6P.
Now that there is more development and that I understand the slots better, I'm really enjoying this phone!
Overall, if I had the choice, I would still probably pick the 6P over this; that thing was just a beauty in basically every aspect, and it was the phone that first introduced me into the Android world.
Not a huge fan of the single downfiring speaker or the bottom chin, but otherwise it's a great phone, especially the camera!
I'm going to see what the OnePlus 5 has to offer, and may switch to that - but I'll definitely keep this XL around until the 2nd gen Pixels release. I'll be purchasing the second gen Pixels only if Google allows them to be development friendly like how the Nexus line was. If not, I may make a permanent switch over to the OnePlus line.

Well I had the LG G6, S8+, and I sent the G6 back and sold the S8+. The pixel was snappier than both, better camera than both which is a great feature having and outstanding camera, and more reliable than both. I like stock Android, clean, fast, stable. I like being able to unlock and do what I want with my phone when I want and still have the same snappiness, camera quality, and reliability on custom ROMs. Most times you sacrifice things to go custom. Not with Google devices, Nexus, Pixel, etc. I still have it since released and can't see getting rid of it any time soon. Ya, maybe people thinking of OnePlus 5, but I also had the 3 and 3T and one thing I hated about that is when using anything custom, the camera was horrible, BT for me had issues, and other little nags. All in all, this is definitely my go to device and I've had many.

After having the Pixel XL since I returned the Note 7 (Best phone I've ever owned IMO), There are issues with it that really bug me.
- For one, Youtube stutters and desyncs the audio from the video almost every video I watch, and I watch a lot of YT.
- Second, the bluetooth does not sync right in my Audi, and every 15 minutes it sounds like a modem for like 20 seconds and reconnects. It also doesn't know what to do on voice calls and frequently bounce back and forth between car speakers, and phone speaker mode, so I just turn it off for voice or Hangouts/Meet calls in the car.
- Third, the battery life has been dwindling over time, so I charge twice a day now. Yes, I'm a power user and need at least 6-8 hours of screen on time per day. That being said the phone charging speed is ridiculously fast. I can charge at least 50% in 30 minutes.
- The speakers are crap, and the audio jack doesn't give me enough volume. The setting between say 60-65% volume is way too loud, so the volume curve is not good.
-As a pro, the Camera is excellent, even in low light if you know what you're doing. The video, if you use the auto stability is crap so just don't use it.
The phone does stutter, and take a while sometimes. I am using the stock ROM, and have made no modifications to the file system or home screen at all. As is, this phone is average, so for the price, not worth it. I do have the Verizon version, and not sure if that makes a difference. Can't wait for the Note 8 to come out.
I've had mine since November and still love it. I came from the G7 edge which I was quite fond of as well. The following are the good things that keep me on the Pixel.
- Camera, for stills easily the best available. Wish the EIS didn't cause the jello effect when panning while video recording, but nonetheless I've been quite pleased with the camcorder as well.
- Software, clean, simple, fluid and robust. I am on stock unrooted. I reboot my phone once a month for updates and the phone never lags, gets janky or develops issues requiring a reboot. Additionally, the speed of updates means I'm always up to date with the most secure version​ of Android available.
I've had my Pixel XL 128gb since launch. I came from a Note 7, so was very challenging to get used to having a very lean software base which didn't offer many features in comparison to the Samsung series. I missed many software features from the Note 7.
The thing that gets me the most, is that I was already bored of the device 6 months in. I usually hold onto a phone for 12-24 months. The Note 4 I held onto for the longest time (24months). I enjoyed it as there were both android OS updates, and touchwiz updates, so it constantly got a new lease to life looking fresh or having new features. 8 months on and the Pixel looks exactly the same, with no updates.
I also feel that the design looked dated when I bought it, but it now is really showing it's age with the HUGE bezels. I have also struggled to find any good screen protectors (I've tried them all) as they don't sit properly. The phone is huge with a smaller screen than most phones this price/size.
It's got the worst bluetooth of any phone I have every owned, partly down to Android but also to the Pixel.
Had a lot more ROM options for Samsung, being that you can go Note 4 roms, Note 5 roms, Note 7 roms, AOSP builds, CM, MIUI. I feel like the Pixel has AOSP, stock. That's it really. They are all the same with very minor changes.
Otherwise it's mostly buttery smooth - although i'm constantly keeping my eye out for a new phone, so could be the shortest period I have owned a phone for.
Im really thinking about the Essental, its pretty much down to this or G Pixel 2 XL, , but the price point and features of the essential are way better, it looks better too, specwise they are very similiar.
I love Project Fi though , i pay only what use , so if my plan is $60 bucks but i only use $20, i pay $20, thats the thing about the Pixel, but at over a $1000 bucks it looks like the Essential with $60/ unlimited by Sprint is a better deal
Anyone else coming from 6P, ive been a Nitrogen rom guy since day one , i love the 6 p , but once you get the battery bug "25%" , the hardware fails quivkly and its time to move on , this is my second 6P ,
Also switching betweeen Sprint/tmobile/uscellular is really cool, however the best service abd what im on 99% of the time is Sprint anyway, its looking like the Essential is tge one

Well camera is better in 6P and Pixel 2. More features in these phones, there are really no special things at all in essential. Don't get me wrong, i like that. Software is not mature enough, but the Oreo-beta seems Essential are going the right way. Lineage 14.1 is availible and its great. Lineage 15 on the way too. The size of the phone, and the overall quality of it is the best i've ever had! It's a great phone for the price and if price matters, this is a great alternative to pixel 2.
Get the essential phone. No regrats, YOLO swagin here on Oreo and magisk.

I upgraded from the original ones one lineage and this phone is very similar in terms of software but very different, upgraded hardware.
Do you want something that already looks dated (pixel 2 or xl2) or do you want that flashy iPhone X look and save $500+ cash?
It's no brainer when you think about how fash technologies advance. Not worth the price and on top of that the stupid little issues they are having.
If I'm paying $1100+ for a phone it better be damn perfect and have the best build quality out there...the new pixels are not...get the essential
I moved from 6P to Essentials over a week ago originally due to the battery bug problem. I was tired of carrying around a battery pack and random phone shutdown at 35% battery. Disclosure, I'm not a techy or an enthusiast so my feedback from just a regular user's perspective. Overall, I'm very happy with the quality and price I paid ($450). I was looking at Pixel 2xl, LG V30 but the design/build with the attractive price point of Essential sealed the deal. The camera is pretty decent. I have no complaints about it. I sideloaded Google camera app and used both Essential and Google apps. I don't find much difference between the two. The pictures from Google app seem to be brighter but Essential app seem quicker to me. Battery is excellent but that's sort of a low bar coming from 6P with battery issue. Software-wise, I'm ok with not being on Oreo it didn't impact my daily use much and overall the softwares on the phones are ok. I think to me this is the best-looking android phones I have ever seen. The build with premium materials and the design look great and feel great in your hands. With the hardware spec not much different from Pixel 2 or LG V30 and the right pricing, I'm willing to compromise somewhat and I was extremely happy with it. Hope this helps.

Same here. Came from a 6P. Did not get the first Pixel because the screen was 5.5 and that was too small for me. Got one of the first essential phones that came out. Had some bugs and they fixed it. Looked into the Pixel XL. Like the larger screen but the price is absurd when you get basically the same with the Essential. Running Oreo beta. No other kids, root or such. Phone works well for me. Camera is adequate for my needs.
Also came from 6P & I freaking love the Essential phone. The build quality is phenomenal and I can get by with the camera. Google didn't do it right to many issues with pixel 2. Go with Essential you won't regret it.
Came from a 6p as my battery was dying at 40% and I bought my phone from best buy instead of google so google could care less that their phone failed me. got the $160 deal on the phone from sprint and liking it so far way better battery camera is decent with the google app and is pretty snappy. the bugs can be annoying but i think it will be good once oreo is out of beta I Hope. really just happy I don't have to carry around my batter pack anymore.

I came from a 6P to and Essential PH-1.
I sent mine back but I was in the first wave of phones with the high price and all the issues.
I have a LG G6 but I'd trade the LG G6 to get a PH-1 again since most of the issues are resolved and accessories are available.
Also at $500 it's the phone bargain of the year.
The feel and form factor are great.
The Quality feels every bit as good as the iPhone X.
Also the XL is bigger and doesn't feel as good. YMMV
Also the XL costs almost double.
Unless the camera is your thing go for the PH-1.
I went 6p to Axon7(great device by the way) to Essential. All were good upgrades over the other. My Essential camera is just as good and really has taken some better pics than either of the devices before it using Gcam. Only thing I miss is the accessories as I'm a case and protector whore.

Sprint has you sign up never telling you they dont have the goddamn device in stock, they wait til you order it , then send an email that says were sorry its back ordered tough **** asshole , wont have any til christmas, but we are still charging you fees and the overnight shipping and anything else, thats piss poor
I canceled and gave my opinion of the way Sprint is f ucking people , they never mention anywhere that they dont have the phone instock and encourage you to use overnight shipping if you do it before 2 pm for $10 bucks, once you sign up, they send an email and blame the manufacturers of not having enough devices, if this was a first run fone id say ok , this fone came out in august, uts your fwult Sprint and lying to public is bull****
i have some experience of what you have so let me give my 2 cents.
i came from HTC M9 and Moto X Pure on Sprint. i still have my SERO-P Plan but instead i dont lease phones (because they make me switch my plan). I bought the Essential phone in the end of Oct. at best buy and im quite happy with it compared to the other two. At first, i had to return it because it would not activate on sprint and we couldnt figure out why. so i returned it and got another one. the other one turns out though was slippery like glass and overheated so i returned it... then after reading the XDA forums i noticed there is a heavier weight on the new ones so we weighed it before i took it. the new one is actually much more grippy than the last even with dry hands.
what i love about it:
first... the battery life. easily the best in battery life. i get 5 to 6 hours on a normal day of on screen time
fast android updates. the newest updates you have to take out your sprint sim, put a gsm sim and from there it will take the updates
the size, beauty, and weight
internet speed is pretty good too, thought gigabit speed is a hard time of getting actual confirmation from them. ive received on a few occasions 70+ mbps in my small town where ive gotten 30 last time with m9 and x pure.
the look is amazing and pure android is the icing on the cake.
bad things are:
camera is been improved since ive gotten it but still needs work. the issue ive experienced is the graininess.
sometimes i miss calls and texts (not sure if its sprint or the phone itself) but what i noticed is its pretty good compared to the m9 as far as bars go. the x pure was better in signal but it never got the speeds i got from this phone.
usb-c dongle but there is a 3.5mm mod coming for the phone soon from what i heard
response could be improved a bit
overall i will say go for it. despite the negative review... i still give it a 4.5 out of 5 because its andy rubin who knows how to tweak android anyway he feels like it and so far they did alot of improvement with just software updates. do a speed test with your 6p and essential and see for yourself. post a video if you can
Well im still up in the air , im not gonna use Sprint , i dont like being lied to, you dont start a relationship with a lie it never ends well, that being said, i dig the Essential and it is unkocked, just wish Fi would accept it, im also looking at the Pixel 2 XL and the Razer , seen another flagship killer called the Blackview S8 and id jusmp for a samsung S8+ , if the bl.was unlocked , i wont ever buy a locked boot loader unless it can be unlocked , thanks for the review that was what i wanted
I came for the 6P as well and I have no regrets. I do miss the camera on the 6P but I tend to still carry it around for the camera and mess with the os with new roms.
With the gcam port the essential takes some good shots.

@gman2pi or anyone on Verizon's network. how is the data speed and connectivity? My 6P has been having the shutdown issue at 50% and i missed emergency calls text today.
Was so frustrated that I ordered a battery tried to replace it and broke the damn phone and need one ASAP.
My concern has been the thread with the connectivity issues that the phone is having and slow data speeds.

I've had no issues and get the same bar strength and performance as my 6P in my usual locations. I only use phone, text, and primarily e-mail and some downloads on their network. I don't stream much on cellular and don't use Verizon visual voicemail or their other "special features" so can't comment on that.

Came from og pixel, earpiece speaker blew, then went back to my nexus 6.. then this.. battery life is insane..on verizon signal seems great though i have missed some calls.. not sure why.. but great build quality.. no regrets

Currently have a 6P that I replaced the battery on. I am ordering the pixel 2 xl. It's a lot more money, but the video stabilization is so bad on the essential I couldn't buy it.
I've owned this great Nexus 6 since shortly after it was introduced. I've loved it since day 1. Lately I've been having problems with the USB connector. It was loose and the charging cable was constantly falling out. So I figured it was time to move on to a new phone. I hastily ordered a new Pixel 2 XL on Swappa without a second thought... it was was afterall the newest "Nexus".
I anticipated its arrival for a week. When it arrived I opened it up and did just a very minimal setup, just so I could see the settings. I was underwhelmed and immediately realized there was nothing about it that was better than the Nexus.
It had great specs, but nothing that was very exciting. It is said to have a spectacular camera, but that isn't a priority. I was thinking about unlocking the bootloader, flashing a rom and rooting. But I would end up with nothing better than the Nexus. So I did nothing but put it back in the box, list it on Swappa, sold it, and shipped it.
I found someone who said they would fix the USB connector, so I took it to his shop, he fixed it and I paid him $25 for his trouble even though he didn't charge me for a minute's work.
Even though the purchase and sale cost me some money, I am so pleased to have a renewed appreciation for my Nexus. There isn't a better phone on the market for me. I'm running Nitrogen 8.1 ROM and couldn't be happier.

I recently "upgraded" from my N6 to the OP5T 128GB version. My USB charge port is loose as well. I also have some screen burn starting from the bottom of the screen fading up. Mine pretty much needs a complete overall to make it like new again. I mainly use it for gaming. So, after some thorough research I chose the OP5T. I couldn't be more pleased with the OP5T. I did a minimal setup at first just like you did. I tested everything out first before customizing it. I then decided that I liked it enough to proceed with customization. Unlocked BL, rooted, running AICP 13.1 w/ EX Kernel. Dam this thing is lightning fast. Good camera. Excellent battery life. Excellent SOT. Still got to keep the 3.5mm jack. Quick charging with that Dash Charger. I do miss the front-facing speakers.

2014 was the peak in terms of hardware enhancement for me, you had 1080p screens standardizing after 2013, emphasis on battery life from lots of manufacturers, much more efficient chipsets particularly the 801. Phablets started to become a bit more accessible after the note 3 monopoly. Stock android still had some official love with M8/S5 google play editions. I've traded a lot of phones for AOSP Roms but almost all 2013/2014, perfect combination of hardware and software
After that and the Iphone 6 the competition centered around niche devices emulating it. Additions that are so insignificant and obviously made to entice people away for the Iphone's juicy profit margin. The S9 is the saddest example of this. Its high time someone breaks through with a major innovative product like the N-series days and Iphone.

I have Nexus 6 in mint condition I was facing some lag and general slow performance on stock Nougat 7.1. but then I installed Nitrogen OS Oreo 8.1 and boy it's fast!
Sorry, but the pixel 2 is miles better than the N6 performance wise. I only returned mine because it had GPS issues otherwise I never would have looked back. The pixel 1 however was only a minor upgrade.

You had a USB port replacement? Is that even possible? I know soldering is involved, but did you lose fast charging & usb otg capabilities? I'm just wondering. I have a bad usb port as well.

Exactly what I'm thinking for upgrade. How do you compare the speakers though?
Just dug out my shamu and flashed the latest linage OS. Still love the phone. It was years ahead of its time! I have had every single Nexus and pixel since and while the camera is vastly improved as is battery life on the pixels, Little else is all that impressive over the good ole shamu. I will say however that my daily drivers are now OnePlus devices, had the 5, 5T and now the 6. Very impressed and like them a lot. Much better replacement choice for the shamu user.. At least if you don't have Verizon...
Kind of in the same dilemma as you guys, I have a Nexus 6 right now and am considering an upgrade when the Pixel 3's come out, I was considering the 3XL, or possibly the 3 but then gave some thought to going with the 2XL and saving a bunch of cash. The 3XL is looking to be at least $1,000 or around $43/month added to my Fi bill, while the 2XL will likely drop significantly in price, possibly around $400 or about $17/month.
My biggest issues with my N6 right now are battery life and the USB port has been problematic for a couple years but I have dealt with it, but it's getting to the point where's it's extremely difficult to get it to recognize the cable being plugged in. So, I got a wireless charger for the house and the car, I think because the curve of the phone they're both a little finicky but I think I have found the "sweet spot" in where to set the phone so they both work, so that helps a lot with the USB port issue. I could spend about $20 and replace the battery and it likely would be very worth it, might do it even if I upgrade the phone just to have a backup or one to play music off of in the garage.
My daily usage mostly consists of a little web browsing, playing music quite a bit,GPS when needed, couple of games when waiting for Dr appointments and stuff like that but not much otherwise. I don't take many pics, just some here and there and would like the speed to be better but for the amount I use it the camera isn't a big selling point to me. With that said what are your thoughts on just getting a new battery, upgrade to the 2XL or one of the 3's when they come out?

I also read that a user took his phone into a battery place and they broke his phone. Ended up giving him $250 for the device. So I am dealing with my Nexus 6. I am also debating on a Pixel XL 2. The Pixel 3 is way out of my price range.

I've swapped batteries recently, and I can tell You that only damage You can do is basically when removing backcover, and thats easily avoidable if You're careful. Under the backplate only thing that might get damaged is the volume/power ribbon and it goes from height of volume/power buttons up till around top of the phone. Oh, and the frame can get damaged too, but thats extreme case, since the mid section of the frame (under where the battery and wireless charging coil sits) can survive bending, just something to keep in mind when separating the backcover (If it sticks hard to the cover, just warm it up some more and separate with plastic card/carefully with something made from metal). After the backcover is gone You're basically set .
Looks like a lot of N6 users have this problem with the USB connector. Mine charges only under a certain angle but i'm not buying a new phone

I had this issue and thought it was toast. Got a toothpick and whittled it down so it fit around inside the entire port. Cleaned a whole lot of crap out of it and now it charges like it was brand new.
Phone is still functional with lineageOS for normal activities. youtube and browsing. I still prefer the 16:9 even if it makes the phone wide. The games i play on the n6 vs the pixel xl 2 are sluggish in comparison. I'm about to use it and slap a sprint BYOD sim into it.
I think those complaining about the price of the Pixels are forgetting that the Nexus 6 was very expensive when it came out. Having bought a Nexus 4 previously I was interested in a Nexus 6 but I could not justify the expense to myself. Eventually after the release of the 6P a local store had some remaining 6s and reduced the price to where I could justify buying one. But they were as expensive as flagships of the time.
The same has happened with the Pixel, a couple of months ago the last few new ones on sale locally were reduced and I bought a Pixel XL. I wanted something new, with developer support and with a headphone socket.
But in some ways the Pixel XL is less than a Nexus 6, notably there is no notification LED and the screen is smaller and especially narrower. I am a Linux server admin and one of the things I occasionally do is SSH to a server, and the Pixel XL screen isn't as good for that. Sure it's faster but I don't really need a faster CPU.
The whole trend to make narrower screens and remove useful features like notification LEDs and headphone sockets is making newer smartphones worse. So I hope to keep using the Nexus 6 for a while yet. I bought a wireless charging pad so that I would not wear out the USB socket as quickly. I use double tap to wake in order to not wear out the power/wake button (my Nexus 4 suffers from a power button which now needs a good push to work).

Yeah I just purchased a nexus 6 this year, and it had a bad battery. So being I have a little experience in the field of phones, I ordered a battery and I carefully opened it up. - I got it all apart and changed the battery out, when I had finished all worked as intended. It isn't too difficult to do. :good:

I found someone who said they would fix the USB connector, so I took it to his shop, he fixed it and I paid him $25 for his trouble even though he didn't charge me for a minute's work.
Even though the purchase and sale cost me some money, I am so pleased to have a renewed appreciation for my Nexus. There isn't a better phone on the market for me. I'm running Nitrogen 8.1 ROM and couldn't be happier.

I nearly agree. The Nexus 6 was a great phone. Well ahead of its time in many/most respects. In some ways, I did find the pixel2xl a bit of a downgrade, in particular, while both are called a "6 inch", the Nexus 6 is most definitely bigger. Especially its width, which is the most important dimension since width dictates the utility of the on screen keyboard. I found the on screen keyboard on the N6 to be "adequate", and on the P2XL, I find it to be "very challenging". Also the lack of wireless charging.
You mention the camera. To be honest, I can't much tell the difference between the cameras, except that the p2xl is ***FASTER*** and more stable (mostly affects video). The image quality is roughly the same. N6 was way ahead of its time in that respect as well, even throwing in OIS, which wasn't repeated until... P2XL. The P1's EIS makes your brain hurt -- motions are very unnatural on it. The EIS+OIS combination on the P2 really is incredible though.
But the big issue with the N6? No more support from Google, and I just don't have time to keep it up myself, nor the desire to wade through buggy "kitchen sink" system images hacked up by high school kids who want to bloat it out with completely useless and half baked "features". The phone has to actually work reliably, and so from that point of view, it was time to move on. My service provider has also upgraded from HSPA to LTE, but the N6 only supports LTE on a band that they're barely using for LTE.

That. $700 for the N6 at launch. That's $750 with 4 years of inflation factored in.

Eh.... you got that backwards. Nexus 6 is the one that didn't ship with a working notification light. Some hacks have partially enabled it, but to my knowledge, nobody ever got the blinking hardware working for it (since the blink function is simply not implemented in the firmware). The pixel's *ALL* have a working notification light, you just have to turn them on, which (unlike N6) you can do from the settings menu.
Settings --> Notifications --> Advanced --> Notifications --> Blink light. At least that is where it is on Android 9.

Agreed. Wider screen is more useful. Give me a 6" 16x10 and I'll be much happier than the bullpoop 6" on the P2XL.

Yes the N6 LED wasn't enabled in stock firmware, but it is there and works with the LineageOS ROM I have installed.
Thank you for helping with the setting on the Pixel XL. I am amazed that it wasn't set to on when new out of the box. A person would never know it was there.
I think I prefer the steady light over the blink as I know I will see it when I glance at the phone. Yes I know it would use more power.
Both my cars, one 10+ years old and the other 20+ years old don't have bluetooth inputs but do have 3.5mm inputs, so the audio out on the smartphone is useful for music while driving. I use that more often than using headphones. It is more expensive to replace the car stereo or the whole car than finding a smartphone with a 3.5mm socket. Also I sometimes plug in one of the sets of computer speakers I have lying around. I don't need to go out and spend more money on the silly bluetooth speakers which are mostly not even in stereo.
