Hello, I need to know if the Mi A1 has a magnetometer, I checked their website but it's not listed there: http://www.mi.com/en/mi-a1/specs/
anyone around here willing to help? Would appreciate some cpuz captures and/or skymap app test... thanks
Here you go (it has one)

It is listed there: A 'Hall sensor' is a kind of magnetometer. It confused me at first too.
Yes, it has one and yes, it works.

Hall sensor is not a magnetometer and doesn't work as a compass, it just detects flip protection covers to turn the screen on/off when open/closed, so no, the magnetometer is not listed there. Thank you anyway.

I did a deep dive on this about 5 months ago. The magnetometer used in the A1 is a AK09918 by AsashiKashei. That may be or not be what Xiaomi means by Hall sensor, but I took it to mean it was. Your interpretation may vary. You are welcome.
AK09918 is 3-axis electronic compass IC with high sensitive Hall sensor technology.

It does, I've tested it with Sensor Test from Google Play. The bar jumps up when I get the phone close to a metal.

With the SGT, I have a case for it and have been reading in all the specs that it does have a proximity sensor... but how do you actually get it to work?
I would love if I could open the case and it turned on, and then off. So far I have not read anything about using the proximity sensor in any way on the Tab.
Any help??
Thanks!
I don't think that will happen since apple have just patented that idea (I think)

I'd be exceedingly surprised if this was the case, because there's going to be an awful lot of prior art here!

I was under the impression that the Tab did not have a proximity sensor. All of the Galaxy S devices do, but that's because you put it close to your face when talking on it. The Tab doesn't have a handset speaker on it, so I don't think it would be necessary.
does the galaxy tab actually have proximity sensor , or has any one tried it
Well, for what it is worth, I remember having a metal detector on my TMo G1 that used the proximity sensor, so the white fruit company can't say they had the idea first.

It's for accurately measuring your altitude without using GPS.
For example, a mall map app could know what floor you were on.

Are you sure it's THAT sensitive?!??! I highly doubt that some 10 feet will have a different pressure especially since there's a more or less constant pressure via the HVAC. But I'm no expert!

You know all those 3D buildings in Google maps, this sensor will reportedly tell you what FLOOR you're on. I dont think Google Maps has that sensor built in yet, but I'm sure they will soon.
It all helps more accurately tell your GPS position by altitude. If your on a small hill, the altitude will help the GPS better lock on your position. GPS is (x.y).. adding the barometer makes your position (x,y,z).
How accurate it will be, we'll soon see.

Actually, GPS is XYZ. The problem though is that the Z is +/- a couple hundred feet which is not good enough to know what floor you are on.
Also, the barometer can give you altitude inside a building where a gps can't lock or will take too long to lock.
What about an app that autosets to airplane mode in case you forgot. That would be enough pressure.
Hello, just one simple question: where's proximity sensor in the A500/A501? I have the Acer flip case but if I close it the screen stays on... Should I enable it somewhere in the settings?
Are you referring to the ambient light sensor? If so, its on the top left bezel, between the volume rocker and the rotation lock. If you look at the black glass there in bright light, you will see a small dark spot, that is the sensor.
As for a setting, the screen will dim based on ambient light levels, not shut off. The setting for it is located by tapping the clock, then the settings button, then the word "auto" next to the brightness slider.
Was this post helpful? If so give thanks
The correct answer is a question... What proximity sensor?
this is driving me nut
the Acer case will always partially cover this one and the dispaly will fluctuate the brightness in random... ;(
pushing A500 firmly into the case solves for a while before happening again - think I need new case...
Based upon this site that contains the tech specs, http://gadgetian.com/10395/acer-iconia-tab-a501-specs-price, the A501 should contain a "proximity sensor to turn it on or off". Please note that if you google for "Acer iconia tab proximity sensor" you will get a number of results, so I doubt that it's just a mistake of one site.
So there's no way to turn the screen off while the tab is properly fitted in its sleeve?
Couldnt the light sensor be used as a proximity sensor? With software I mean.
I have checked my tablet from top to bottom and even made some sensor test to make sure that everything is working and I never saw a listing for a proximity sensor so I'm sure that we don't have one (or a barometer... that was also one of the things that was possible to test ).
@cd85233: Probably yes but I wonder what kind of impact it would have on the battery.
there is no proximity sensor on the A500 nor A501. refered to spec sheet and hardware implementation... unless they changed it since last release.
who told you so ?
Guys, there's an app called tasker. You can use that to tell the tablet to lock up when it receives less than 3 or so % light reading from the light sensor. It works great on the gtab. Still waiting for the case for my iconia to test it out.

still an ambient light sensor, not proximity sensor. As for if it could bbe used as one by software I'm not sure. For the case, look up roocases for the acer iconia on amazon. I have the folio multi-angle black n love it!

This works 100%. Just did it on my Iconia.
Set the trigger to be light between 0 and 5% and the action to be "Display"->System lock.
Let me know if you guys need help but this is easy and works AMAZINGLY. I don't know if more battery use occurs to poll the sensor though. Will report if I see it in the battery usage.

Just because someone calls it that doesn't make them right.
Go ask a PC repairer how any times a customer has asked to have their hard drive partition fixed when what the customer means is something completely different. Meaning people often use what they think is technical jargon to imply knowledge they don't actually possess

I get it, now you know n its kinda like how one off the wall chinese tablet has a "gravity sensor". Is it an accelerometer? Gyroscope? Our does it merely sense the presence of gravity? Will the device go haywire if used in outer space? Who knows! Lol tech specs can be painfully vague and inaccurate. Especially on a company who can't even figure out to name the source code for their kernel something that doesn't make it look like a help file, THEN place it in the documentation portion of the site, good job Acer! Point being I get the confusion

Last night I turned to Google Maps for the first time since switching from an iPhone 6s Plus. I was used to instant satellite fixes and precise positioning on the map. Instead, my s7 edge placed me hundreds of meters away in the middle of the Tiber river. As I drove, fix updates were intermittent and wildly fluctuating. The device proved unless when walking, too. I've checked to make sure that all location features are on.
Anyone experiencing similar issues?
Thanks.
I had the note 4 and that phone was terrible at gps signal, I switched to iphone 6+ and never once experienced a gps issue. Now i have edge s7 and its been better but a few instances it has lost gps signal.... it must be a samsung or android thing, its too bad ill be switching to iphone 7 , i love android but honestly iphone are simply better at what they do. Heck even the fingerprint all the apps worked fine with iphone , I can't get more than 1 app working on my edge.
Yeah, a deal breaker for me as I live in Rome, Italy and really need reliable GPS to find my way around. Guess it's back to the iPhone. sigh
It seems like it's the magnetic sensor the problem. Try dialing *#0*# and under Sensor, and then look at the Magnetic Sensor, should be a blue line and a "3" in the black circle, if not, that's why your GPS is going crazy.
Here's my thread about the problem, post in it if you could:

It was a common problem with the S6 Edge that I had...
I'm interested in knowing if you guys have a fix for this issue. I checked my sensor and the line was red with a "0". I calibrated it, and it looks fine... However, I guess I will lose this if I reboot the phone?

That is correct, once you reboot, you have to recalibrate the GPS/Magnetic Sensor... Oh, @opeth771 where are you located?
I'm trying to figure out if it's Exynos only, as currently that seems to be the case.
GPS has been awesome on my S7 Edge Snapdragon. Fastest and most accurate signal compared to any other android phone I have owned.

Do you mind dialing *#0*# and looking under Sensors and Magnetic Sensor and see what is in the black circle, and this after you've rebooted your phone?
Curious if those of you with an Exynos are using branded phones that have received firmware updates or not. Mine was purchased direct from Samsung Italia and has not received any recent OTA updates that I understand were pushed by some providers. Just looking for possible clues.
How to calibrate? I have a red line with 0, self test says PASS. Is the noise test to calibrate? Do i have to put it on a stable surface for calibrating and does GPS need to be on?

I want to buy the S7 but I am worried about gps. I don't use gps with car, I use it while i'm walking and playing Ingress, often in narrow streets with high buildings (I live in Italy), so I need a very accurate positioning. What is the accuracy of the S7 GPS outdoor? Can you please make a test with the app ''GPS test''? And maybe post a screenshot of the accuracy and of the satellite's signal strenght? Thank you.

I'll do in the morning and post then. I'm also in Italy. I have an issue that degrades my GPS accuracy - the compass needs to be recalibrate after each restart. Otherwise, accuracy is off hundreds of meters. Seems to affect the non-SD units like those sold here.
Hi
i got 2 brand new S8 G950FD and i got the same problem with both
tge magnetic sensors "compass" keeps losing calibration.
this becomes very annoying when using Google maps onfoot everything is upside down .
recalibrating the sensor is always successful but for some reason it doesn't stick for long even when using high accuracy location settings
I'm not sure if the problem is with Google maps compatibility with the S8 or with the sensor itself
anyone having the same issue ?
does the calibration rest automatically when going to the sensor app (*#0*#) ?(even though I'm going to the sensor app becomes the map is upside down )
thanks in advance

I've got exactly the same problem. I never thought that a protective case could be the problem, however, I'm using the Samsung original clear case and it does recalibrate...but it's very annoying because you can't rely on your compass, it will abandon you without warning.
Has anybody found a fix to that? Is it hardware related?
