The "boosted" brightness works well under the sun at Auto brightness. Awesome feature by LG.

I read in the documentation that it's bad for the screen to stay at max brightness for very long, so it dims to protect itself from lasting damage. You probably shouldn't try to circumvent that.

I understand a permanent max brightness is bad, but at least for 15-30 minutes, 3 minutes isn't long enough when I'm at work as I am working outside.
It sounds like running over 70% brightness causes the screen to heat up. They must have decided that in 3 minutes it doesn't heat up enough to be damaged; presumably, in 10 minutes the heat could accumulate enough to hurt it. Of course, I'm sure they err on the side of caution, so maybe 5 minutes "almost never" hurts it, etc, but it sounds like if you want full brightness for an extended period of time you might have to use another device. (If heat really is the issue, it's probably worse in Texas...)
Boost can last way more than 3 minutes when set to auto.
So what i did was go to a store. Take an lg g7 to test, shine a smartphone flashlight to its sensor and also set it to automatic. I open a full white image from browser and use my phones sensor to measure the brightnessin lux. Just to make sure when i manually boosted it said 1050lux. We can think this as 1050 nits. My phones sensor may not be the most accurate one but we can be sure the brightness is around 1000nits.
Anyways i shone the light for 15-20 min and apart from not being able to align the flashlight and sensor briefly time to time, it always stayed at 1000 nits. After the test the screen wasnt hot, even it was barely warm. So in conclusion i can confidently say screen will stay max brightness at auto as long as you need as long as it doesnt heat up.
Btw my phones brightness is around 500-600 and when i put it near boosted lg it looked dark lmao.
edit: deleted ps part, it was wrong

What do you guys keep the brightness at for your screen? Also hows the battery life? Thanks, personally I keep mine at the lowest and am really tempted to raise it!
I keep mine at the lowest also, only time I change it is if im outside and its sunny out. Otherwise the lowest is bright enough for me.
around 60% i love how the screen looks when its bright

Ironic...I change mine when I'm outside too, AMOLED is horrible in the sun light but its great otherwise..

Yea I have to agree there. I have to do the same crap with my ZuneHD when im outside. but this screen is to amazing to be bothered by it.
Around 50%+ mostly, unless I'm using it outside.
Keep mine on whatever the middle setting on the power control widget is (~40% I believe) most of the time unless I am outside or if I wake up and look at my phone in the dark, then I cut the brightness all the way or go blind from the whites on the screen
So I take it that everyone else has the same problem with auto-brightness: that it fluctuates up and down too quickly?
auto works great for me... *shrug*
I use auto and it has been working fine for me.
I keep mine on auto, but it does fluctuate from time to time. For example, when I hold the phone sideways with the light sensor shaded, it will dim of course, which can be really annoying because it should only dim when I'm in a dimly lit environment.

Yea I actually have this problem too. Its pretty annoying, and well I guess I don't want to use the manual brightness, because there is a sensor on the phone for a reason. I want to use ALL the features.
I use an app called "Brightness Level" by CurveFish. I like it better than the power widget since it has more levels (default switches between 0, 36 & 100). I keep mine at 25% but it still looks better than most phones at 15%. Reducing brightness from 36 to 25 means the screen is eating 70% of my battery by days end instead of 78%. 15 reduces it further to around 65%.
The problem with auto is that A) It jumps around too much. 2) it turns the screen down whenever I use the horizontal keyboard. And d) the sensor really sucks. I turn the phone 10 degrees and it ups the setting by 3 notches.
It's hard to tell whether the screen brightness versus battery life is worth it ya know? I wanna show off the screen but have enough juice at the end of the day.. so.. what do you all suggest besides auto?
I keep mine at full brightness. Haven't seen an issue with battery life, but then again, I don't play games on it or anything.

I need sunglasses to use the phone with the screen brightness to full! You better be careful or you'll burn your retinas.
Ya man no joke this is one bright ass screen. Ill try tomorrow a day at half then full the next and see if there's a difference in battery life. Thanks
I'm long over due for an upgrade. I'm coming from a Nexus S and the screen is a pain to see outside. How is the outdoor experience? Bonus if you were a former NS owner.

If you like to keep the phone at low brightness and you are in bright light, you really struggle to see anything on the screen. However, just putting the brightness up to full will allow you to view the screen in bright light no bother.

Presumably the auto-brightness copes with such situations fine - it turns it up to max brightness when in daylight, right?

Screen is beautiful especially contrast, vivid colors and pure black
Inside I set brightness static low and as soon as I get outside I use Auto.
Only downside is heat when brightness is high and pages/app is light themed.
One example could be my light themed newsreader. If I use it in light conditions (near window) phone get a bit hot after some time (10-15 min)
One day using it in direct sun light, I had to stop reading due to heating ...

It does, but it's a bit dim-witted, needs a second or two to react to the lighting outside.
hmm s4 is the best screen dont worry about anything i can only say 2 words FREAKING AWESOME!

Thats generally a good thing. On some older Android phones, it would be overly sensitive and would be constantly changing its brightness just in response to small changes in which angle you're holding it, etc.
From the answers here, it looks like this might be subjective. My last phone was an Xperia Arc and I have to say that in comparison, the SG4 screen is pretty bad outside. In bright, direct sunlight it can be VERY difficult to make out any detail even with the brightness turned all the way up. But I guess this is the trade off for the battery saving of super OLED. In shadow or indoors, the screen is pretty much unbeatable, bright, clear and sharp.

Outdoor visibility is not good even on Max brightness
It's pretty poor indeed. Doubting to go for another phone because of the bad brightness.
For me is excelent!

Maybe they have different panels? For me in sunny Germany it is often very hard to read the display of the sun is out.
for me is outdoor visibility in big sunny day (in europe) is without (real) problem, but is need say:
- only if is not glass full of fingerprints
- in hand is need little move phone to angle not in direct sun
- if on lcd is app with dark theme, then is of course less visibility that with light theme...

Lol, we have had and still having a lovely summer this year
Screen Brightness is just a tad bit worse than my previous phone... (Alcatel Idol 3 5.5")
Thus barely visible in full brightness outside, unless you're in the shadows. Oh well... (3 Stars)
I'd agree that screen brightness isn't brilliant in strong sunlight compared to other phones and it's probably one of the worst aspects of the phone.
One thing that I have noticed is that if you have the adaptive light setting activated in settings then the phone never seems to be able to get more than about 80% brightness.
If you use an app such as YAAB instead of the standard setting then you can control the average brightness and increase the brightness and hit 100%.

Go to Settings>About
It should be before the build number.
In the minimum brightness thread, one guy said that if your panel is not Novatek, you're display is good.
If it is novatek you will have problems with max brightnes minimum brightness and the screen looks more yellowish

That is touch panel firmware version not the actual hardware LCD screen type, mine 07 goodix something the firmware version
And I don't have any yellow issues on my screen

Not even on sunny days, but when it's cloudy during the day and the sun is not directly visible, the brightness is not very good although it's serviceable. Several times I pull my phone out outside and at first think to turn up the brightness because it's difficult to see only to realize that it's on max brightness already.
For me I have no visibility problems with sunlight outside

i think its below average but i put 3. feels a little darker than the nexus 6 i had since launch, which wasnt great.
It seems only a little brighter than my Pixel 2 XL. However, it is much more visible in sunlight and the colors are more vibrant outdoors. Compared to other flagship phones? I'd say it's not quite as bright as the Note 9 or Galaxy S9, but it seems plenty good enough in all conditions for my use, indoors and outdoors.
I find myself having to keep this on max brightness all the time, whereas on my old pixel xl I could get by on 50-75%. It is definitely dimmer than the pixel xl, ugh

It will give you extra brightness if you have a custom kernel.
Does this app help with the overall experience, and how does it affect battery life? I ask because I don't have a Pixel 3XL yet, and was very disappointed when I evaluated one yesterday at the Verizon store and turned brightness to less than 100%. Color accuracy is not a particular concern, but being able to see the screen is.
First time Pixel Owner here, I find the 3XL having slightly disappointing brightness. On my old phone which was the HTC 10 I set mine to around 45-50% on a regular basis and it was pretty bright, occasionally bumped to 70% while being outdoors. On a 3XL I had to set to 70% minimum in order to be able to watch videos comfortably, normally 90-Max outdoors.
Agree with others here, brightness isn't very good, we've finally had some sun here in the UK and when I'm outside it's very hard to see! I came from a Note 8 so it's going to be hard to see in the summer!
Brightness outdoors - Perfect, can see everything in sunlight even with polarized sunglasses. (100%)
From there it gets dark quickly, typical setting for indoors is 70%.
Only in darkness can <50% be used.
The screen gets brighter with time.
Brightness sucks. I live in Tulsa (fairly sunny). If the sun is out without clouds the screen is virtually un-viewable if you aren't standing in a shaded area.
P3 screen brightness isn't great and the Samsung and OnePlus are somewhat better, but frankly none are fun to use to use in direct sun. Rather than squint I'm just going to move into the shade whenever possible, no matter what phone I have.

Outdoor screen performance is okish
The maximum brightness is great for indoors but okish outdoors cause under intense sunlight you might not be able to see the screen clearly. In normal sunlight the screen is not great but usable.
I was pretty worried about these negative comments about the brightness, living in Spain we see a lot of sun.
But I haven't noticed any problem to be honest. I noticed though that at some angles my sunglasses seem to act as a filter and all I can see is a black screen. The first time it happened I thought I'd put my finger over the light sensor, but when I looked over my sunglasses I realized what it was.
Do you have, perhaps, powersavings activated?
Look at: settings - Power saving Mode - reduce Screen brightness.
I usually use 50-70% brightness (without power saving enabled) and that works fine...

this problem appeared after some update or is it a factory problem?
Factory problem.
Also disable screen optimization from battery sub menu helped in contrast.
Never get this phone if you are living in sunny areas.
terrible delay , not recommand for pubg.
