I'm in the process of building a new phone configuration using a V20 (US996) running LineageOS. (14.1 at present, current nightly build)
I have a high-performance Samsung SDcard in it (128GB Evo Select) which is capable of about ~60MB/s write and 100MB/s or more read speed.
In my LG G4 (also running LOS but a late November 2017 build), using a 64GB version of the same card, I get around 45MB/s write speed based on a couple of benchmarking tools I have.
But the V20 only seems to achieve 15-18MB/s write speed.
Is this some kind of terrible hardware flaw with the V20, or ???

Your comment makes little sense.
The OS in both examples I mentioned is mostly the same, the main difference is the phone hardware.
I am simply trying to ascertain whether this sort of performance is common for that device when using a high-speed card.

No, it makes sense.
Lineage for V20 is not the same as for G4, or most other devices for that matter.
This might be some problem with the LOS lg msm8996 kernel, which of course LOS for the G4 does not use.
All I'm trying to ascertain is what kind of speed people are seeing with their V20's in general.
If' it's significantly better than what I'm seeing, I'll check the OS-specific forums. Thanks.

Get way faster than that but I'm on stock ROM so that doesn't help sorry. I'll try to find my other thread I had in here that has my results
I've never used lineage on v20 but that would be prime suspect considering all the roadblocks getting it to even run right that I've read about lol

Actually that helps quite a bit, since it corroborates my initial conclusion that this is not a hardware issue, it's a software issue.

It's always a good idea to try SD first, so you don't hurt anything and keep your sanity. Verygreen has a size-agnostic installer that works well, and is very painless.
The tips on keeping your SD card class 4 is right on the money. Faster/newer cards tend to Force Close on us a lot.
Once you have it how you like it, and are comfortable - switch to EMMC install.
Honestly, I've had my NC for about four months now, running off SD and CM7, and have never gone back to the original B+N bootup. One of these days, I'll just shove it all into EMMC and be done.

It has absolutely nothing on it now, and I guess my next step is going to buy a good SD card for it...

The Class X refers to sustained large block read/write speeds, and not the random one. Assuming you're intending to follow verygreen's guide on installing CM7 to the sdcard only, you specifically want a high random read/write speed card to do so. Anecdotal evidence (and lots of it) have shown that Sandisk branded microSDHC's of Class 2/4 work the best.
In terms of size, 4GB is pretty tight but great for simply testing (and cheap too @ 10 bucks from Staples). I use a Class 4, 8GB Sandisk (was only 15 bucks at Radio Shack) which feels much roomier.
Good luck and enjoy!

I'd recommend the cm7 nightly builds. More features, more customizable, all around the best experience to be had out of a custom rom.
For SD Cards, stick with the Sandisk ones, highest class rating you can find and I'm generally a fan of bigger is better when it comes to storage. Even the 32GB ones aren't that expensive anymore.
Definitely have fun with the nook, it's next to impossible to truly kill it, so have fun trying out a whole bunch of stuff. If you break something, just start over!
Thanks so much you guys! You are making me "feel" a lot better about messing with it!
I felt the same way when I got my first iPhone jailbroken, and I never managed to kill any of my phones yet! hahahaha (knock on wood!)
I just found verygreen's post, and that certainly seems ok..
Now to just figure out this winimage thing..yet again, something that a "Real" computer guy should probably know, but something I have never had to deal with..
Thanks again, and I will post updates/failures for you to shake your heads at! hahahah

AnandTech is of the opinion that the AndroBench tools are not yet functioning properly on Lollipop. It was the AndroBench toolset that Ars used to cook up their NAND comparison.
Once developers get their hands on it, they will figure out how to disable encryption. They could possibly use a hard flash method which replaces entire sectors of the NAND with new data. Simply flashing a ROM/kernel probably won't be enough.

Benchmarks don't matter. Are found in normal use the phone is slower than a N5, which is what a normal user will experience. That's what's so bad.
Also, encryption has nothing to do with this. You can enable encryption on Windows and it barely slows down disk access, if you have a modern cpu. The Nexus 6 chipset is plenty fast, so the slowdown is due to flash memory not being fast enough.

In which case encrypting everything by default is a bad decision. No one wants a phone slower than a N5. Did Ars get a bad unit? They are highly respected.

Its just a software flag that tells the firstboot process to encrypt the phone. It is described here: https://source.android.com/devices/tech/encryption/
*** quite trivial to disable.
More: Its just a parameter in the fstab, which is a plain text file that describes to vold, what to mount where. Changing the flag from forceencrypt to encryptable fixes it. Note that this file is in the root fs, which means that the boot image needs to be unpacked and repacked to modify it.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/F2FS
I know most people don't believe in the filesystem. However I am not one of those. I've used F2FS on previous devices and it seemed to make a difference to me. I believe it to be a faster and more efficient filesystem. Most importantly I believe flash storage will last much longer due to the difference in the way the blocks are written.
I don't consider myself a genius so... Im sure someone else knows better than me.
Just wondering if anyone was interested in porting it over our way. IRRC the hard part is building twrp to work with it.
I haven't seen any talk about it on the Pixel XL subforums, no.
Would definitely like to see it happen though.
I think TWRP has to be modded to support it
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it would have to be supported in the kernel and TWRP at the same time due to both being in the same partition.

What none of you read was Google's response to that guy. First of all the mount options can cause your storage to become corrupted in the event of a power failure. Also they tested f2fs internally and in real world usage it didn't make a difference in the performance of the device.

It has been stated that most don't believe in the filesystem in the op. This equates no into almost no devs trying to implement it into ROMs/kernels+recoveries. It can be done and file structures stay intact. I've used it daily without any issues on my nexus 6(freewilly). Look at those or nexus 7 forums if you need proof. Kernel authors have added support for f2fs, NTFS and probably other file systems for ages. Then you need a TWRP build that can format to that fs.
I wouldn't take Google statement as cold hard fact. If they did everything "right" then there wouldn't be a mod community. They're is plenty of objective data showing f2fs outperforming ext4 in crucial areas like database operations.
Having said that, f2fs is not heavily utilized, a few Moto phones use it and it is pretty new fs. Samsung developed it and they don't use it. Ext4 has been around for.. 30 years? It's a nobraIner decision on their part to take the tried-and-true method rather than risk producing a million devices using a different file system that isn't nearly as developed or seasoned as ext4 is.
F2FS was definitely faster in its early days, but it had issues. As those issues were addressed, F2FS itself got slower. It no longer has a speed advantage. I'm sorry to tell you, but at this point F2FS is snake oil.

I can't be bothered to find something I have no interest in, just to prove someone else's point for them. Lol
Having said that, I don't see any reason my F2FS shouldn't had been added to a recovery build yet if there's interest. If there are more than a handful of people interested, I can create a twrp build with F2FS support. It will take some time since I haven't synced omni repos and made my own recovery image in over six months.

I got my Hands on some internal Documents of the Honor 8 Pro and found some interesting things. I read many reviews after the launch in Berlin.
A lot reviewers wrote that the 8 Pro got UFS memory because of the high benchmark scores. But it looks like that only the pre-release/demo devices got that memory type.
Mine 8 Pro has "only" the eMMC 5.1 and the internal confidential document said that's the official memory type.
I can confirm that my DUK-L09 has also no UFS memory. Bought mine from O2 Telefonica Store in Germany with a MyHandy contract.
I can confirm as well, i have a honor 8 pro and it has a "eMMC" memory type, many specialized tech website announced it as a "UFS" memory type...that's kind of suck
All the new phones were advertised originally as UFS then the news came out and websites were changed to remove references.
Now it seems the Galaxy S8 is the same.. I wonder how many others did so, given there's a reported shortage of UFS memory?
Hi Guys.
How did you check your memory type? Did you use benchmark? I'd like to test mine and check if it has the UFS 2.1
Thanks!
Just run AndroBench from the playstore. And if you got ~250mb/s and ~95mb/s you heave emmc
Mine has the EMMC type too...

just curious... yours is german unit? one member said his unit is from germany and it's got emmc. so wondering if it's really random or perhaps there's a pattern (based on geo or sth).

i think mine is a demo/preview model, it came as l09c900, without any storage info on the box itself, strange but okay ^^

but still, i'd think that somehow in the assembly line, they'd have like one batch of emmc chips for one batch of phones. so, wondering if we can tell maybe the batches are more for black colour, or blue...
i dun think they'd have a batch where the chips are mixed (emmc and ufs). it would make recall/ tracing batch a nightmare if they really mixed things up during assembly.
would be nice if current owners can share more stats like:
* location/ country where unit is bought/ originated from (in case you bought it from overseas reseller)
* colour (blue, black, white)
* storage size (64GB vs 128GB)
* storage type (ufs vs emmc)
hopefully we can have some idea where the UFS is likely to be in...

That can work. Once I have my Honor 8 Pro, I will give you these details
Hello,
I am new to android and recently ordered a Leeco pro3 for $120 (couldn't pass it up). I have read that it does not get ota updates in the US, so I have a few questions. Is there any detriment to using an outdated android version? Can I still run apps like facebook, twitter, and Snapchat? If i flash to lineage, will I still have all of the features (camera, Snapchat and facebook apps, etc)? I know the IR blaster won't work, but this isn't an issue. I just have read that certain apps won't work and want to avoid having a phone with no camera or no social media apps such as Snapchat. Thank you all ahead of time.

If all you need is just core functionality then I would there is nothing wrong with running the stock rom. Everything will work right out of the box and all of those apps you mentioned should run just fine. Not to mention you should get really good battery life. With that said if you like some of the features that come with Nougat based roms such as better Doze and Camera API 2 support so you can install apps like google camera and give you camera a nice performance boost then go for it. I have installed all of the aftermarket roms available in this thread and IMHO Paranoid turned out to be the best. I havent had a single issue with it and it has the latest drivers taken from Oneplus 3's source code.

Thank you for the quick response. Given the fact that you have gone through using custom roms, have you been able to use snapchat on Paranoid? I have read that custom roms cause the app not to work. Also, for someone who has never used an android device, how hard is it to flash a custom rom? I am very interested in having a better camera, as I will be coming from a Lumia 950 XL (it has been deteriorating and Microsoft seems to have given up on W10M.). I know that this isn't on that level, but anything I can do to get the gap smaller is good. I am also interested in other features, but have to ask - is your battery life significantly worse running a custom rom? That would be a turn off. Thank you again.

Nope my battery life is near identical to stock and everything works on Paranoid. My favorite thing about it too is that all viarations of Google camera also work which will give you great pictures and videos if you play around with them far better than stock imho. But play with it first you will find that you can do far more on Android than you can windows mobile. The ecosystem just doesn't compare. If you want to to install a rom then follow the guides but make sure you do your homework before just jumping in. It's not difficult but a screw up could brick your phone. But there are also many guides for unbricking as well
Lineage has new Android versions first, but doesn’t have good battery life on this device, use a different ROM. If you want Snapchat, you can use a ROM that passes Safetynet or maybe Magisk’s hide feature. Oreo ROMs don’t pass safetynet, but some other Nougat ROMs do.

This is great news that the camera actually improves. Do you have snapchat issues with this rom? I just want to ensure I am able to enjoy everything android has to offer (well, as much as possible on a year old phone for now), as I have missed quite a bit of apps on W10M.

This is very helpful, but I am confused how to tell. Do you know any roms that pass safetynet? Thank you both for your help.

Paranoid does, so does AICP I think, both for nougut, not Oreo ones yet as SELinux is not working on Oreo. There are others that probably do also, but I haven't tried them yet.

This is tremendous. I am already turning into an android fanboy and I haven't even got the phone. It is quite impressive that the opensource community can get the latest editions stable on these devices. I just saw no need to go buy a galaxy or near $1K smartphone when the SD820 is still a powerhouse in my eyes. Do I have to root to install Paranoid, or just unlock bootloader and flash? (I may be missing a step but am going solely off of how I understood the guides)

SD821, not 820, the model with the 820, the so called elite, has nearly no development.
You have to flash a file to unlock the American model’s bootloader. (The SD821 powered x727 I think it’s called...) the Chinese model x720 has an unlocked bootloader, but is missing US carrier frequencies so it’s worse for Americans.

That's not great. I think I have the elite coming because it says SD820. Am I essentially screwed on roms?

It's a major difference in both hardware and support. I'd return it for a refund.

It looks like there are the same roms though. I even found paranoid. Is the 820 to 821 really that big of a difference? This thing was so cheap.

You are looking in the Pro3 elite forum?

Hmmm... it looks like there is development for it now, no Oreo, but there are some ROMs. I’d still return it though.

Can you post a link to where you bought it from so we can confirm the model and your options?

It stinks because I had an additional coupon bringing this to $120s. A dual sim (necessary for work) phone with a sd820 for that price seemed too good to be true and now it seems it is. However, if I can still get the play store ill be fine on any rom (would prefer a custom).

So ya you got the Elite. I do recall there being a couple of ROMs for that phone just poke around this forum and I believe you will find them.
you can find all the detailed specs here:
https://www.gsmarena.com/leeco_le_pro3_elite-8614.php
The only thing I would really be concerned about is band support and if you will get LTE or not. It looks like its a mixed bag here:

I checked the band support and that's good. Will this come with the play store though? And if not, is there a way to install it on the stock rom? I just want to make sure I have the basic apps (although I'd prefer a custom rom)
