Internal memory suddenly read-only - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I suddenly have a very strange problem. My internal memory changed for some reason to read-only. The built-in file browser can't modify files anymore, nor can any app. With Root explorer (root access) I can still modify files. I could just use Root explorer, but some apps actually crash because they can't access the internal memory, so that's no solution.
Here's the situation:
I have the SM-N9005, on Android Kitkat (4.4.2). I was rooted with CF Auto Root. I wanted to try Magisk (not realising that you needed at least Android 5.0 for it). I uninstalled Busybox, Xposed, and then did a full unroot via the SU app. Then I installed TWRP recovery, tried installing Magisk. Of course that didn't work. So then, with Odin, I reinstalled CF Auto Root. After that I reactivated Busybox and Xposed. TWRP seemed to have disappeared, so installed that again as well. Everything was back to the way it was, except for that internal memory issue.
Does anyone has any idea how to fix this?
I made nandroid backup, so I could just revert to that backup but I'd prefer to find a solution and know why it happened.
Thanks!

After installing and running twrp, did it ask to make changes to internal storage?

It did not. And I've just found out that everything on the SD card can't be opened via the built in file explorer. I can create new folders and such, I just cannot open any files.
I says: "Not able access to external SD card. Try again if SD card is successfully mounted"

It's been a while since I used twrp but I recall being asked if I want to allow modifications to the file system.
Maybe it's time to flash back to stock using Odin and then restore your backup?

Weird, I don't think it asked.
Yeah I guess is if no one comes up with a solution I won't have another choice.

[Q] Help: Flashed 4.2 with CWM

So I decided to upgrade to 4.2 and didnt think to check if i needed a special recovery. but i wiped and flashed as usual. The Rom (Clean Rom 2.5) works perfectly, but stickmount doesnt work with 4.2 so i planned on recovering my backup of 4.1.2
Problem 1: CWM cannot find my backup files, presumably because the file tree change
Problem 2: I wiped and flashed 4.2 a second time, as i could not restore my old one, creating a filesystem as follows...
/storage/emulated/0/0
now, the first /0 is where my current rom saves everything, and /0/0 is where all my old stuff is.
Can anyone advise as to how I can get this back to either 4.1.2 or just back to a regular-ish 4.2? I hear I should be using TWRP
Thank you

I had the same problem flashing ClearRom 2.5. You can use root explorer to cut and merge your files and folders to the root of the internal sd and see if that works. When I did it and entered CWM it had gone back to the 0 filepath.
Give it a try mate cause I know it has worked for some others on here.

Just update Stickmount. Today's update allow full read/write access to external storage.

Awesome. Are you running a custom kernel for write access? I can only read info
i tried flashing M - Kernel but as far as stickmount/otg goes it didnt change anything. how did you get it to write??
Stock, stock kernel, rooted, 4.2, latest Stickmount. Yes, I have read/write access to OTG attached storage formatted as fat32. I have to use Astro to see it though. I created a folder on a thumbdrive and copied something from internal to it. Even Root Explorer doesn't see it until they get out an update. Some of the recently updated apps, like MX Player or Doubletwist do see the attached storage. It is going to take a while for all the devs to get on board with these recent changes.

Cannot figure out Nandroid Manager on rooted MF3

I cannot figure out how to get Nandroid Manager to work or ROM Manager for that matter to get a snapshot of my phone. I used the SD card method of rooting my Galaxy S4 (AT&T/I337) so all is good there. I am using Titanium Backup for my app data/settings/SMS logs, etc., but if I have to do another wipe/factory reset, I don't want to have to rebuild my phone again from scratch with all of my app settings, my launcher settings, and so on. I had thought I was backing up all the while using DropSync and I couldn't restore anything from that app or the external SD card for some reason.
I do not think I have either ClockWorkMod installed but I do have TWRP which I found out was automatically installed when I rooted (?). I realized too late of course (after reading these forums) that I shouldn't have even tried flashing the CWM but quite honestly I was trying to do 2 things - use the S4 as a USB Mass Storage device and backup my phone using Nandroid Manager or ROM Manager. I read that I needed to have CWM installed in order to do either. Is this misinformation?
The biggest problem I have with Nandroid Manager is that it seems to be backing up to nowhere. It's default backup location is /mnt/. When I tried to change the path to my ClockWorkMod folder (that I have on the internal SD), it said "This is not a valid ClockWork Mod folder." It also asks me to find the TWRP folder but I can't find that one either using ES File Explorer search.
I just want a snapshot of my phone so that if it goes squirrely, I hit a button and it's all back. Is this unrealistic with the MF3?
And btw, I can't use the SafeStrap method because my phone has to be encrypted since I use it for work email. It's one of the requirements by the company. I read that I should avoid SS for now.

Internal SD Card write permission

Okay, I don't know how many people are facing this issue but here it goes.
I've just restored back my Nandroid backup rom which is root stock 4.4.2 TW Poland from CM11. Everything is as it should be except for one thing, my INTERNAL storage suddenly become READ ONLY, not REWRITABLE.
To me this is weird as most people I've search on this board has external SD issues, but my external SD are working fine. I can transfer apps and even do Titanium Backup on it no problem.
Can someone enlighten me what seems to be the problem? What has CM11 done to the internal storage permission?

I have exactly the same issue now.
Hoping there is a fix
Same issue, had to flashed stock firmware again to fix it.
I noticed in es file explorer, internal sd is mounted as "legacy" after restoring while it was mounted as "0" in stock tw before CM11.

Perhaps that's the way to go - sorry for 20 questions - did you flash a pre-rooted version or just plain stock via mobile odin?

Plain stock. I just tick the everoot and reset data and cache...don't mind re-install everything as I don't have many apps and games.
You can try flash it without clearing data and cache, that might work..

I seem to have been able to get it working again.
I went into CWM - wiped Storage, Data, then the usual full data reset etc and flashed a rom.
Permissions are ok now.
Last time I install CM11...

SD Card doesn't mount?

I'm having a very weird problem here. I decided to get USB OTG for my phone and flashed a zip that's has worked for me before. Everything worked fine, until I discovered that my SD card didn't mount. Root Explorer could find it fine, or at least the files from it in emulated/0 but ES File Explorer couldn't (both apps had Sdcard as a file in the root, with a toast appearing that told me it wasn't mounted when I tried clicking on it), nor could any app that needed internal storage for something (be it the camera, Play Store couldn't install apps and an emulator I have couldn't find the file/folder). I tried flashing the "recovery zip" from the thread (I will link to it) but that did nothing. TWRP could mount the SD card, unlike everything else though. In addition to that, all three file managers (Root Explorer, ES and TWRP's file manager) had conflicting stuff in the root directory. TWRP was able to mount SDcard, but couldn't find a folder named "storage" that the other two could. Root Explorer could also find the recovery zip that I moved to the root (since I wasn't able to download stuff, I had to use OTG to get it on the device), while the other two couldn't. Root explorer could also find the emulated/0 folder which contained all the files and folders from the SDcard. This is very strange and I haven't been able to find anything on this. Factory reset is my last resort, mainly because it takes so long for titanium backup to set up all the apps again .
Here's some info on my phone (before I flashed the USB OTG zip):
16GB Nexus 4
Beanstalk 4.4 ROM
Faux Kernel
Multi ROM Manager installed
TWRP as a custom recovery
Thread I keep talking about: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/orig-development/usb-otg-externally-powered-usb-otg-t2181820
If you need any more info just ask!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
bump, please. I can't do a titanium backup, which means if I factory reset, I will lose everything. I have some good scores on some great game, might sound a little sad but I don't want to lose it, plus some other stuff that I've managed to accumulate that will piss me off if I lose it. Anyone?

CustomRom without SDCard

Hi,
I don't have an sdcard and I like to flash my S5 with a custom rom.
Do you think thats possible and how?
Thanks
Fritte
Yes it is possible. Just do standard procedure by following instructions provided
Quite a few ROMs don't require you to have a SD card to install a custom ROM. Read the directions in the custom ROM threads and go from there.

It may be a problem if you have to do a data factory reset before the flash, you can push a rom after the reset with adb though in recovery. Just buy a sdcard, you can also store CWM backups on the card then wich saves internal storage space.
My S5 gave me in recovery mode only access to an folder called "SDCARD", I can't browse my file system, even if I don't do the factory reset. I will buy an SDCard but the will deliver the next week, so in the mean time I have a bit time to give it a try.
You didn't give us a detailed description, so it's impossible to be certain. But likely what you describe is normal i.e. you would need root permissions to browse the SD card file system. It sounds like you looking through the directory without root permissions and the OS therefore restricts you to a base folder there.

I rooted the device, than I copy the zip file from the custom rom and the google apps to the root folder of the device. I will try again. Is there any specific folder which I sould use for this?
But I use SuperSU for the root access is that maybe an issue?
For the purposes of installing a custom ROM from the SD card, the zip file can be in any directory. It is perhaps easiest to subsequently find it if you use the root directory.
