"Pixel Visual Core Service" Update released - Google Pixel 2 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

A new update was pushed out today in UK on Google Play, an update for "Pixel Visual Core Service" to improve HDR+..
Ive found that after the update and having both HDR+ On and Off.. on camera images, the difference isnt huge, but the pics are less grainy, noisy and do look a LITTLE bit clearer on Crop..
I had to Reset the Camera by going into Settings>Apps>Camera>Storage.. Clear both the camera Cache and Data
Anyone else noticed this?

Heres 2 better images... Yellow flowers before the update, Green plant after the update .. both taken on different days but same light.. using "Tap to focus"
Look at the shadows between the leaves..

What is the app version number?

You know Pixel Visual Core is NOT used by the Camera app right? Only 3rd party apps are utilizing it.

This was my thought as well. Any improvements should be apparent in an app such as Facebook, Snapchat, etc. where the app's camera is used.

But what were your examples taken with? Any of those apps? And sorry but your before and after pics of the plants isn't a great way to demonstrate a camera improvement. You acknowledge two different subjects and two different days but how can you be sure the lighting is the same?

Actually, the supposedly better hdr photos look much worse. It appears these are just bad photos.

What can be done if i notice the visual core service not working on third party apps? Considering I've tried clearing cache, storage, uninstalling, reinstalling, rebooting the app.
Neither snapchat nor instagram or facebook is able to use pixel visual core from time to time. What can be done?

Do you have a separate app of pixel visual core??

I uninstalled it from settings and then there is an app by google itself on play store.
How can these fluctuations in the working of visual core be solved?

Can you share the link to that app?? I don't really understand how it works i mean it should be a system app but not sure if it is.

Here's the link to the pixel visual core service app.
It works with an in built chip in pixel 2XL

I just got my Moto G today and I'm more then happy with it.
One thing in lacking is the camera and lacking of settings.
I was going though my entire downloaded apps list and came across an app called "Focal" I'd downloaded in the past.
This application is basically a replacement camera app with all the settings that it should of came with already!
Just a heads up if you didn't already know about it

Its hard to say for sure. There is a lot more settings for adjusting the exposure and white balance.
It also adds the ability to add color filters, its in beta right now but its well worth checking out.

Not directly, but since you have more control over the camera, you can make them look better.

Focal is the native CyanogenMod camera, they released it as a standalone app some time ago, for 3rd party camera apps I strongly recommend "A better camera".

Focal isn't CyanogenMod native camera, the Focal developer dropped CM when they became Cyanogen Inc, and since then he works by himself. That's why the app is in the Play Store, he didn't want to stop his work, and instead made it avaible for everybody.

Does anyone have video evidence of a jelly-free OnePlus 5?

So I already have a OnePlus 5 that I ordered on launch day. Despite all of the bugs being reported, it's still a massive improvement over my Nexus 6P; basic tasks like navigating don't cause it to overheat, this Snapdragon 835 is light-years ahead of the laggy 810 CPU, the phone doesn't suddenly cut off when the battery reaches 30%, and it's FAST! It's not quite perfect, though:
1. Slight jelly effect when scrolling.
2. Slow WiFi, but I fixed this by forcing 5GHz and disabling 'Smart WiFi Switcher'.
3. Google Play Music doesn't allow me to seek to a different position with streaming music/podcasts (I can seek fine through downloaded music). No other music apps exhibit this problem, yet it only happens on OnePlus phones (the 3T had the same issue) so I'm not sure if the blame should be placed on Google or OnePlus. I subscribe to Google Play Music and listen to podcasts very often, so this is a huge inconvenience.
I've been mulling over the idea of ordering another OP5 and paying with PayPal to ensure that I wouldn't have any problems returning it if it turns out to be worse than the one I currently own. I've only had this one for 4 days, so if I order soon then I should have enough time to test both of them and decide which one I want to keep. Going through all of this would be a slight inconvenience, but I think it would be worth it to get my hands on one of these elusive jelly-free OP5s that some people claim to possess. I'm sure the other two issues can be fixed with software updates/ROMs.
Thanks
Ok l will go to another thread then?

I don't have the Jelly issue on my phone at all. Neither do i have the slow wifi issue. I don't use google play music and have it disabled so i can't test that feature. Here is a quick video of it on my phone (I used AZ Screen Recorder).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tH-XfRQk93Y
I've seen reviews of people such as SuperSaf (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDnW2biR9eQ) making videos of the phone's speed test against the iPhone 7 recorded with an external camera and i don't see that issue on his phone either. I think it's only affected on a few phones since my friends don't have this issue on their phones. If you have it, then you can return your phone to get a replacement.

If is present, i dont see with. In mine 1+3 and 1+5...
it's not noticeable when scrolling fast, because everything blurs anyway.
I don't think most people will notice it at all, it's only evident when scrolling at a specific speed, and made more obvious if you are holding on a specific spot and moving up and down.
Confirm my Oneplus 5 does have the Aka Jelly effect.
I tried seeing it every which way i could think of..
Finally after putting Oneplus 2 side by side exact same apps as my Oneplus 5
scroll up and down with both phones exactly the same time and you will see the icons on the oneplus 2 stay Square where as the oneplus 5 elongate up with the scrolling or you can call it stretching.
This reminds me of Ubuntu Compwiz wobble effect.

Check the Play Store. If you are on 8.1, you should see that you have some app updates available for ARCore and AR Stickers. Once those are installed, go back to the camera app, open the menu sidebar and AR Stickers will be listed as another camera mode among Portrait, Photo Sphere, etc.

Same, I just finished playing round with it and noticed that too. Its like the animations are forced to the foreground. You can stick your had out and it will show behind them instead of blocking them.

Just installed it and processing speed might be ever so slightly better but I believe the other advantage of the PVC is battery use. So I guess on an heavy photo day, it should be noticably better on battery. No one knows until Google officially says this update opened it up for the Google Camera. The February update DIDN'T open the PVC to be used by the Google Camera and only 3rd party apps.

The visual core is meant only for third party apps and for some machine learning algorithms.
The stock camera had been optimized to use the Hexagon DSP on the SOC.
You are experiencing placebo. Camera app doesn't use the visual core.
This isn't showing up in the Play Store for me. I assume it's because I'm on a custom ROM (Dirty Unicorns).
I just tried installing the APK from apkmirror and got the following message: "App not intalled."
its not showing up on mine either, on stock rom.
still showing in system service as 1.0.166778097.

Essential stock camera app vs other camera apps?

Is it true that an app can make all the difference for picture quality? How good is the stock camera app that Ph-1 comes with? I'm not photo expert, so there may be a go-to camera app that everyone uses but I don't know about so I'm stuck using the generic stock one.
Thanks.

in low light the difference between the stock camera app IQ and one of the GCam ports (I use Arnova's V6) is quite noticeable, I use the stock app for monochrome shots, and the GCam port for everything else, as the IQ is just better.
I installed the very top/latest APK from that page (GoogleCamera-Pixel2Mod-Arnova8G2-V7.9.apk) on this PH-1 running Android P beta and photos look pretty great. I'm comparing it with the camera app that came with the beta, and it's much better. Thanks for the link.

Yeah, I tried the same and it is really great. Even with latest update, I was very disappointed with the burst mode of Stock Camera. Most of the shots came out blurry when taking moving objects like kids.
This one does a much better job. Pixel and One Plus 6 are very fast. They take 20 pics in 2 seconds. PH1 takes around 5-6 seconds.
I am yet to test anything else.
Every version of the gcam apk I have downloaded scans as malware. May be a false positive but is enough to keep me away.
I am wondering if any camera apps in the play store offer improvements?
@arsenal74 what are you scanning them with? Where are the dls from? Have you read the security statement on the site linked above?

I use Nvisio https://apkscan.nviso.be/ and also virus total. Scans as malware/pup
As is noted on the site. It's up to you but a pup is only highlighting something if you didn't put add it yourself.
Your scanner is full of Bull. I use Malwarebytes and no issues with gcam apks.
It is an online scanner that uses multiple services, for this file only 1 of the services flagged it as suspicious, go to the link above and try it on the apks that you have.
I have no idea what Babable PUP.HighConfidence means but it is enough for me to think twice about installing.
Read the security notice on the gcam APK website... That's exactly what it says!
