I mainly want to switch for the sake of battery life, but I can't find a way. Is there any?

Open Dialer: Enter *#*#4636#*#*
From popup menu > Phone Information
Set Preferred Network Type: Scroll up to "EvDo only" or probably the better option would be "CDMA auto (PRL)" (that should force 3G mode)
There are other possible options there as well, which you will see...
Honestly not sure that it will greatly improve battery consumption though.

I was wondering if there is a way to lock onto ONLY umts and not hsdpa? It can sometimes take forever to load web pages because it is constantly searching for hsdpa. I am also wondering if you might be able to get better battery life this way as well?
I don't think battery life is going to be different since it's still technically a 3G connection. But if it is really searching for HSDPA a lot then it -may- make a difference.
Are you on T-Mobile? It seems that I'm on HSDPA at all the times, pretty much.
switching between 3g and HSDPA is not the same as switching between EDGE and 3G
As the poster above says 3G and HSDPA are basically the same technology using the same frequencies so would not make much difference to battery life.
Dont forget that on the stock rom it always displays 3g anyway so you cant see if you are using HSDPA or not.
Also this phenomenon seems to vary as to what network you are on, mine mostly stays on H anyway.
From memory the early 3g handsets that did not support HSDPA topped out at about 300kbps, not sure if that translates to the 3g symbol not the n1 though. not sure if thats what you would want, as its not much faster than EDGE anyway? so you might as well force EDGE only and save battery life
changing bands 3g only
yes this is possible. Go to your phone dialer and enter the following: *#*#4636#*# .you will go to another screen, select phone, scroll down and there is a drop down box that shoud say wcdma preferred. Select wcdma only and that should give you 3g connectivity only. You can change back or select other settings from this screen. You can choose what works best for you in your area. It should slightly improve battery life, since it is no longer looking for other connections. If you have poor 3g service in your area, then you probably do not want to select wcdma only. I hope this helps. I have done this on my rooted n1 and a non rooted n1. As long as you only change this one one setting it shoud not harm your phone.

Good answer, but totally NOT what the OP was asking. He wants to know if there's a way to lock the phone to UMTS and not HSDPA... the answer to that is NO... because both are 3G, as someone else already alluded to.
Had a Droid for awhile and could allways change between cdma and Evdo but with my fascinate it is set to wcdma preferred and will not change...??
check this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794551
ya i know how to get to the settings but i can choose cdma/auto prl but it wont stick.
Is there an answer for this?
Stock Fascinate, looking to resolve a high Time Without Signal (50%). I'd like to try changing from WCDMA Preferred to CDMA Auto (PRL). I'm aware of the setting under the debug/test menu (*#4636*1111#, then under Phone information > Set preferred network type), but the setting doesn't stick.
If i leave the settings page w/ the Home button, checking the setting shows that it has changed to "Unknown" and seems to stay that way if I exit in that manner.
If I exit the page using the back button, the setting reverts to WCDMA Preferred.
Is there a way to make the setting stick?

If you have any luck figuring this out let me know! I am having similar issues with a high Time Without Signal.
I was just looking at this today and have the same question. Also will this help me force roam to sprint, my coworkers get 5 bars on a Epic and about 100kb down. im geting like 1 bar and about 10kb, i have tried roam control with not a lot of luck.
Hi,
I'm trying to set "Preferred Network Type" to "GSM auto (PRL)" on my Nexus 4 as my 3G coverage is really poor at work.
I get into the menu with *#*#4636#*#*, select "Phone information", choose the option in the drop down box. It works until I reboot the phone then have to start all over again.
Does anyone know if their is a line I can add to the built.prop file to make it stick?
TIA!

I know it's not the same as "Use only 2G networks", but you might try it until you can find a better solution.

No, that is not the solution I want. If signal from my provider is not present or too low, it fall back to a "Partner" one without any charge to me.
If WCDMA PREFERED is selected, it always try to look for and get back to my provider antenna instead of staying on the Partner antenna.
My battery drain like crazy this way, but if "GSM auto (PRL)" is selected it is much better battery drain wise plus we have a repeater indoor for this partner signal...

npiper05,
Actually I would be glad that this post would be resurrect since I never did find a solution.
I am sure with the right line(s) added to to built.prop would do the trick but I don't know what to add.
If you ever, let me know.
Cheers!
I would like to know what can be edited as well to make it stick to gsm auto after a reboot. My data totally sucks and drops all the time with WCDMA. My data works with out any drops when set to GSM auto. If anyone can help us out it would be greatly appreciated.

In the *#*#4636#*#* menu, my preferred network doesn't have LTE/WCDMA/GSM Auto. It only has LTE/GSM Auto. I was wondering how I can get LTE/WCDMA/GSM Auto. I am on AOKP.
When I am on LTE/GSM Auto, I have a lot of drop calls.
anyone know how to get to network modes where i can turn off lte if im not in a good area.to save battery

Or summarized:
1- Enter dialer
2- Dial "*#*#4636#*#*
3- Choose Device Information
4- Scroll down and touch the dropbox; change from LTE/GSM auto to GSM/CDMA auto
5- fin~
This process must be repeated if you device to powercycle or reboot your phone in any way.
I've seen a lot of people have issues with GPE getting 3g signals, myself included.
This boils down to the lack of network settings options available. 2g checked or unchecked. I use 2g mostly as I use WiFi for the most part. When off WiFi though 3g was terrible. Would often end up with 2g even though unchecked.
I've found a solution in another thread to access the Testing app and set network to 3g only from there.
Enter *#*#4636#*#* into the phone dialler to enter the testing app. Select phone information and change network mode from there.
Works a treat for me in the UK.
I've set up a Tasker task to launch the Testing app. This can then be tied to a homescreen shortcut or gesture. Much easier than using dialler.
