does getting insurance make sense?
and if so, verizons $8/month-$89 deductible, or square trades $6/month-$50 deductible?
on paper it looks like no reason not to go square trade, but if there are caveats any of you know about, please let me know.
Thanks.

Go for it... I wound up using it twice in a month and they sent me a brand new phone both times with NO hassle at all.
Of course they canceled me after the second replacement (per the agreement - 2 replacements a year).
bishop,
Is that two replacements per year per phone or per account?
We have three phones on our account.
you can use 'lovemom' coupon code

so 4 replacements over the course of the warranty not exceeding 2 every year.
sounds like a good deal.
what is the 30 day exclusion thing that i read on the squaretrade faq page
"Exclusions: There is a 30-day exclusion window after you first purchase your item."
what does that mean?

nice thanks, i also found another one
THIRTY30 for 30% or 30 whichever is lower.
The 30 day exclusion means you can not submit a claim until 30 days after you purchase the warranty. I bought a titan on eBay and got the square trade warranty. Within a month the keyboard starting getting flaky, and then quit working altogether. I just used another phone until the 31st day.
It looks like square trade makes you pay the entire 2 year fee upfront. Is that correct? I notice on the iPhone plan, you can pay monthly.
I have never purchased the insurance for my cell phones, and never had occasion to wish I had. With the money I've saved on three lines through the years I could buy two Incredibles at retail.

I have to assume it is per phone. I had the TP2 replaced twice. I just ordered the Incredible and they started my insurance again.

yes ive never destroyed a phone either, so all the insurance i saved in the past is good. but insurance protects against future unforeseens and not what did not happen in the past. that is why we have car insurance, even though most people dont have accidents, and health insurance.

I had a similar scenario with my secondary line and VZW re-instated my insurance when I bought a new phone then dropped me a month later. They refunded me but stated that Asurion would not accept my policy due to the fact that I had to be "dropped" for 12mo.
I just read the fine print. I'm sticking with VZW's insurance because they cover loss. Square Trade says "Please note that SquareTrade does not cover loss" which doesn't work for me. I've lost a phone fishing, I've had a phone stolen, and I dropped a phone in a sewer once. I need phone replacement after losing it

that is a good use case for verizon. here is the breakdown now that i understand it fully
Verizon(Asurion)
Cost: $192 for 2 years (pro-rated every month)
Cancellation: whenever
Deductible: $89
Coverage: Defect, Damage and total loss.
Exclusions: Nothing really.
vs.
SquareTrade
Cost: $144 for 2 years (-$40 with 'lovemom' code) pay upfront
Cancellation: whenever with remaining charge refunded.
Deductible: $50
Coverage: Defect and Damage
Exclusions: first 30 days.
If you want to save a lot of money, will not destroy it in the first 30 days (wait until after to submit a claim), and are not going to lose it, then SquareTrade wins hands down.
Mostly people who are afraid of losing their phone need Asurion.
Thanks for the breakdown, saved me having to read through Squaretrade's policy. I just picked up two DI's, and one is for my wife, who can lose anything. Looks like ST is out.
i just add my phone as a rider on my renter's insurance...
i have a lot of things itemized already, and it's a $0 deductible, and probably bumps my premium (for a $530 phone) by about $5/year...
Had good result with Asurion
I had to replace my i910 some how it stopped working. (another story)
Walked out with a Omnia O2
I may save a few bucks with Square Trade but VZW and Asurion stepped up to the plate. Insurance is protection against unplanned catastrophic loss. (I'm a Flashaholic)
How much is peace of mind worth ???
Go for the Asurion....
PS Incredible in my future !!!!
I still think 90 bucks is steep for a deductable, not to mention that is in addition to the 8 bucks/month, 96/year... I'd rather pay an extra 70 bucks to reduce the 2 year to 1 year contract renewal, and take my chances that for 10 months the phone will be OK. Then have the option to keep going or upgrade to something new. Not to mention, you are already covered under warranty for 1 year so essentially all your paying for is accidental damage/loss (which i agree is a lot but so is the deductable and monthly charge)

by flashaholic I suppose u mean u constantly flash the rom, which can brick your phone. that is not explicitly but covered with square trade if u dont tell them u willingly bricked the phone. ST simply doesnt cover losing the phone, like for example ejecting it into space with terminal velocity, or theft. if ur phone bricks, just send it in and receive a brand new one.
unless u lose your phone for good, or are stolen, ST ftw. read good reviews about them too, i dont feel like paying asurion so much more just to cover a corner case of theft.
I use the insurance that comes with the phone. Company pays for it. Paying full pop because a phone is lost/broken or stolen is not fun.
Sick to my stomach

amazon
Amazon price: $49.99 (with new service plan)
I would have done this, except I couldn't add a line through amazon.
I wonder if the outright purchase price has dropped any? At this pricing it would have been worthwhile for me to renew my contract and get roped into the $30 a month data plan.
I outright purchased my HD2 since over the course of the 2 years that my contract would have been extended, the extra $10 a month for the data would have eaten up the savings of getting the HD2 subsidized.
Just the cost of being an early adopter

It's quite sad really. Majority of the people who get the HD2 in the USA are not people who know what Windows Mobile is, and for the most part, get frustrated when they treat it as a phone, instead of a personal computer (SENSE's imperfections is partly to blame for this, which is why I never recommend SENSE to people). I can honestly vouch that the majority of people who got this phone got it because the screen is bigger than the iPhone (and that it is supposed to be T-Mobile's iPhone). That's about it.
Because of this, I"m pretty sure TMobile is experiencing so many returns/complaints from people who have little to know knowledge about Windows Mobile. Therefore, I'm getting the feeling that T-Mobile is starting to think that it's not worth it and is deciding to just push the stock out ASAP (lock whoever they can for the next 2 years), or what's left of it, keep a couple of thousand in stock for return/repair/warranty issues, and call it quits soon (which might lend proof to the upcoming rumor that T-Mobile is ending HD2 soon in July).
It's really sad, because the T-Mobile's HD2 is one of the most solid phones I have ever held in my hand which no cracks, crease, or squeaks. It is a hardware marvel in so many respects it puts a lot of other phones to shame.
Windows Mobile is an OS that is for a very niche market, because it requires a certain finesse and tolerance that a majority of users simply do not have (I give credit to Apple for making a device that works well for the features that it has). Windows Mobile phones are part phone, part personal computer, and part software-gadgetry-hobby for the tech enthusiast.

as above said, its probably because it is becoming a headache for them. I bet they've had hundreds of returns because people have come here, flashed the wrong thing and bricked it, plus thousands more who simply dont get the phone, and have no clue how to start to understand it.
As a line of phones its probably somewhere between a great moneymaker and a support nightmare for tmo.
Sheesh, cut the price I paid in HALF! The nerve....
($99 from Wirefly at release)
As for why, well, I noticed a lot of HD2 commercials from HTC leading up to the release of Evo, then haven't seen any HD2 ones at all after that. Understandable for HTC, but bad for TMO, and it's affiliates. Perhaps lower prices are trying to pull the interest back to the "older" phone.
I got mine at launch at wal-mart - it was $149, so this is a $100 price drop
Shame those of us who paid 350+ can't get some of that cash back lol.
Not to mention that the resale values on eBay will DIVE when we want to sell ours in a year and possibly upgrade. Prices people are paying for used Nexus One's and Apple 3G's is insane! Fortunately paid about 75 in May through Letstalk.com with a coupon so I can definately get that back in a year. At the time Tmobile was charging 199 with a new service agreement. Their return rate must have been like a tidal wave. Amazing that a month ago people couldn't even get this phone as it was constantly on backorder! Guess a software/radio upgrade from Tmobile is now going to be out of the question?!!!
Agree that is a great phone with some minor software flaws but the hardware has been flawless. Look over at the EVO forum and many are have issues with screen delams, bleeding of backlight, badly grounded screens that repond even when touching the kickstand. My HD2 has been perfect - no flexing, dead pixels or button problems.
hd2
i didnt even pay for mine yet. tmobile billed me 130 and i have to pay two payments of 25 bucks so 200 total but they credited me 50 so it was only 150 now i havent had a fone in about month cuz i thought id be paying 25 extra for 6 months and now the fone is cheaper then i got it for with an extra 50, i think im going to call them and try to get my price adjusted !! its going for a third of what i am supposed to pay i might threaten to leave tmobile again or something
just be happy you all got it so much cheaper than the rest of the world to start with. An extra 100 dollars is chicken feed.
Lawl. I would love that the HD2 gets discontinued. It'll make us remaining T-Mobile HD2 owners stand like the few and the proud.

Its seems that the fine folks at phandroid have stumbled across this little nugget of info tucked neatly away in the fine print of the Samsung Vibrant's shop page.
†On approved credit. $82.50 down payment, plus 3 monthly payments of $82.50, required. 0% APR. Taxes & fees additional. Available only at T-Mobile-owned retail stores; see store for details.
phandroid.com/2010/06/30/samsung-vibrant-to-cost-330-off-contract-galaxy-s-fine-print/
If u do the math that equates to $330. I hope T-Mobile plays it smart and doesn't change the price before launch, because I definitely assumed the off contract price would be $450-$550
In any event, there also seems to be a "REAL" screen cap of the actual price tag on the page before TMO decided to remove it. Here's the link to that also...

Jesus Christ. Do you seriously think that the Nexus One retails for $529 but THIS phone - which is better in every.single.way is going to retail for $330?
That's quite literally one of the stupidest things I think i've read in a long, long time.
Personally, Im pretty sure the phone is going to cost $500+ because the on contract price vs. this supposed on contract price doesn't make sense and this also bucks the trend of previous costs associated with phones of this level.
However, it would be a nice (and courageous) move on TMO's part with this slightly, in comparison, paired down galaxy s model to move units.
Anyway, I thought I would share this sliver of hope with the TMO faithful lol.
This just reminds me of the entire "Project Dark" / EM+ debacle where some blogs reported errors/rumors as facts of an upcoming program. So when EM+ came out, the news wasn't that TMO cut their pricing, it was that they didn't live up to the hype that some bloggers posted about false pricing info.
Same damn thing now. People ARE going to be disappointed if they think that in any reality (normal or alternate) TMO is going to sell this phone for $330 without a contract to recoup the cost of the device.
also, this phone is a $750 phone unlocked:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...w?ie=UTF8&qid=1277908710&sr=8-1&condition=new
If you look at the T-mobile site now it says "125 down, with 3 monthly payments of 125" thus making the phone in the $500 range
as you said, that price has been pulled down, and curently at the bottom of the page is of the info screen (when you go to their web and shop for phones, and then for samsung phones) it shows:
"†On approved credit. $125 down payment, plus 3 monthly payments of $125, required. 0% APR. Taxes & fees additional. Available only at T-Mobile-owned retail stores; see store for details...."
others have reported off contract pricing at $439 / $439 and some at $499
we'll see this week

The Vibrant is defiantly NOT better in every single way.
The Nexus one Has a Bluetooth car dock, No word about anything like that for the Galaxy S phones.
The Nexus One is made out of much much better materials, The vibrant feels cheap in the hand and the body looks cheap, the only thing on the Vibrant that looks better is the screen.
The Vibrant has no FLASH, How some one could make a High end Android phone without a flash is beyond me, but oh well.

I'm just saying it's not better in every way, overall I think it's better in terms of hardware like the GPU, Screen and it's file sharing capabilities.
I would agree with him if the Vibrant was built from better material and had a flash, hell I would call it a Droid and EVO killer if it had a front facing camera in addition to the flash and better material but there is too much missing to call it that.

I used to work for them. A lot of people assume that they get their phone replaced with a new one in-store, but they don't. It gets shipped out and repaired if possible. Cracked screens are almost always repaired. They try their hardest to avoid giving the customer a new phone. But if they have replace the phone, it's a refurb. If there are no replacements available, they get store credit for the amount they paid for the phone.

This information is very outdated as it has changed a bit ago. The phone gets sent out (you can get a loaner phone if available for $50. This gets refunded when the loaner is returned). Usually within 1-5 business days you get your replacement phone (same model).

Soon? Psssh yeah right, not believable for a minute when a t959 vibrant (gs1) LCD screen replacement is $89 + free shipping and a t989 gs2 is $149 + free shipping, both from amazon and is the cheapest I have found.. which is about the same pricing as LCD replacement sites from China and wholesale sites like Alibaba and Aliexpress.
True though, their wholesale price should be about 3x less than retail but I've been searching extensively for weeks and there are no wholesalers selling for anything less than what I've stated above. It will be years until we see LCD screens for the gs3 at a respectable price, like claimed in the OP. By then the value of the gs3 will become greatly depreciated from what it is today since higher end phones will be available.
P.S none of those links work

I'm actually surprised they haven't went out of business yet..
Sorry I can't answer your question but my guess is that it will end up being just as you suspect... A mess!
I usually buy phones there Cuz the 50$ gift card thing but after my experience just trying to purchase my s4 and two hours later a f'ed up plan ( deleted family text ) the saving are not worth it. After exchanging for the 32GB I'm done with BB

No issues with returning / exchanging at bb. Im also premier silver so i get 60days to exchange since after 14 contract can't be reversed

Will they really take a phone back if you had it that long?
Obviously you're limited if you buy it under contract but if you buy it retail ($749) it's yours and that return plan should be effective. We're also silver too and noticed 60 day returns are allowed!
As a Silver Rewards member too, I returned my launch SIII at day 59 just to get a fresh one, since the launch one had a slight issue with the volume buttons being loose - they would actually rattle when the phone vibrated! Since I'm not a complainer like so many others for the tiniest bit of lag they see on a 1.9GHz quad core PHONE (remember when desktops weren't even that powerful?), I didn't make a big deal out of it, but just went in before my 60 days ended last year and swapped it out.... I'm going to do the same thing this year for a 32GB S4 IF they aren't launching with some kind of prevention to the bootloader unlock!
People either love BBY or hate it, but if you aren't smart enough to have saved $50 at launch on the S4 like I did with the Phone Freedom deal they did again this year (saved $50 at launch on my SIII too), then you must enjoy spending more for the exact same thing! I can't complain about the 60 day return policy either compared to everyone else's at only a quarter of the time to know if this is the device you want to keep for the next 2 years on contract.....
Best buy is a nightmare to deal with. I have had nothing but bad experiences with best buy. I hope they go out of business soon.
I used phone freedom which is why I purchased from bb. Most likely going to exchange for the 32 as I keep looking at the available internal storage and it bothers me even though my 16gb N7000 sufficed for a year ... decisions

Good luck. Back in the day I was with my buddy at bestbuy, he was upgrading to the black berry curve when it first came out. Of course the rep was trying to sell the extra warrenty. They told us that there's no deductable and it covers everything including water damage. They actually had a small fish tank on the desk with a razor sticking out of the tanks gravel...there was a sign in the tank that read "does your insurance cover this?" They even told us we could smash the phone right in front of them and theyd give him a new phone. He bought the ins and a few months later he had a problem. Brought the phone in for inspection. They told us there was nothing they could do due to water damage. He was like I dont think so. They repeatedly told us they had no such policy...I than took out my bad ass black jack 2 and said "are you sure about that". Of course I took a picture of the "non exsisting" fish tank. He got a new phone and that was the last business either one of us had with Best Buy.

Not everyone is so broke that they want to put up with Best Buy just to save a few bucks.
I'll spend my cash elsewhere, thank you!
Purchase from Sams Club or Costco and you also get the extended return / exchange times..
I have no interest in setting foot in a best buy store and would still buy elsewhere if they were offering the phone for .99 cents..
That's my .02

Okay, moneybucks, no one said I was "so broke" I had to put up with BBY, I have had good experiences with them and enjoyed going back again this year.... last year I paid cash for the SIII at full retail (well, minus the $50 for Phone Freedom), off contract, so let's not go around speaking for other people's financial situations when the real story is that they haven't had any issues with BBY in the past....
It should be easy, I remember I switched out my hox+ for an s3 and it all went smooth. The only thing about best buy is the lines are freaking so long! I think it's a good idea to go switch your 16 for a 32 if you're under the 15 day period. i am too but i just don't want to wait. just got an invisible shield put on today and everything on my phone is so organized i don't want to redo everything. i went and got my s4 the other day and i told them i didn't want to spend too much money on accessories and the employee got my phone and typed into my messaging app that he was gonna do a price match with walmart and save me $20 bucks and that he couldn't say it out loud around other customers. that made my day lol
