How to BLOCK update to Oreo - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I keep reading horror stories about what happens when an S8 is "upgraded" to Oreo. I'm REALLY afraid of what would happen to my phone. How can I BLOCK the update?

Well, I've set the "update" to occur between 2 am and 5 am. I leave the phone off during that time. Keeping my fingers crossed that the update won't happen.

Horror? Just update the damn phone man.. i love my oreo update!

I don't see ANY love for Oreo expressed here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/help/oreo-battery-life-t3749459
That's horrible.

If you don't like it you can always go back to nougat if you want..
You can't keep avoiding it forever.. no more updates.. no new features.. no security patches..

The features don't impress me. What's the difference between obtaining updates based on not getting oreo at all vs. reverting back to nougat? BTW, you didn't say if you've had any battery issues with Oreo.

I don't have any issues.. it's the same as with nougat so..

Can confirm, having no issues at all with oreo, neither with battery nor anything other. I really don't understand why everyone hates oreo. But I also have to admit i'm on Renovate ICE and not stock.

if you stop oreo update, the notification of update will be always displayed and very annoying. even i am unsatisfacted by oreo, more lags, battery drain more and partial incompatibility with whatsapp (even confirmed by whatsapp team)... but the persistent notification update constricred me to update. it's true that can downgrade to nougat, but the same problem will be represented....

Well, the update was forced on me this morning. I'm keeping an eye on battery life.

Ok, so I've had Oreo for a day, and I have to say that I'm not seeing any noticeable problem with battery life. So it looks like there was no reason for my angst. I wonder why other people have such problems?

Should I upgrade to 6.0.1?

I've heard stories of massive performance dips and issues after updating to 6.0.1.
The notice is pretty much permanently in my notifications until I do it.

Nothing as such. In fact, MCH19I is by-far the best update.

Yeah I'm not sure where you're seeing that but it certainly hasn't been true for me.
No and 6.0.1 fixes problems with Bluetooth and streaming video quality, I've been much happier with my 6p since installing the update.
My phone jumped 15,000 points on An tu tu when going from 6.0.0 to 6.0.1
Deffinitly upgrade. If you don't like it, flash back.

My phone works great on 6.0.1. But I got the phone late and 6.0.1 was already waiting for me the first time I used my phone so I can't judge. I did follow this phone very closely before I got it and I did read a bunch of stuff about 6.0.1 messing with doze mode and there for effecting battery life but so far I see no problems what so ever

I got a zv9 update this morning.

Update came on my girlfriends boost mobile stylo. Im gonna update and report back.
I did the update. It seems to be a major stability update as well as an update to the security patch level as far as I can tell. Everything seems to run a ton smoother and the default homescreen dpesn't reload as often. When it does reload the home screen, it's a lot faster than it was before. I'm going to take a quick guess that they fixed some possible memory leaks? I'm not sure. My battery also seems to last hella long now. If other users can confirm that I'm not running placebo, that would be nice.

Do you have to upgrade to Nougat?

I'm trying to find a solid 5.7'' phone. LG V10 has the boot loop issue and given LG's response to it, I am now avoiding the V20 because of the few camera lens cracks.
The 6P looks great on all accounts except for the battery issue on Nougat. I am considering buying a new 6P but regarding the updates, can I choose to just update the current android only? It seems if I keep it on Marshmellow, there shouldnt be the battery issues.
Thanks for your help, I'm slowly learning
If you stay on Marshmallow, you won't get the latest security updates. You will also miss out on newer features, etc. You will also be nagged to update to the latest version of Android in your notifications. You can't get rid of that without root as far as I know. Some people say to block Google Play Services from notifications, but some also believe it might impact something important like other notifications you might get. I haven't looked too closely at doing it that way since I stay up to date with the OS versions.
I'm also not sure what battery issues you're talking about though. My battery life is good on Android N. Battery life depends heavily on your usage, signal strength, etc.

Thanks for the info.
This is the battery issue
https://9to5google.com/2016/10/31/nexus-6p-battery-failure-issues-android-nougat-latest-version/
It seemingly only appeared in the news these past few days.
Bit frustrating and there's no clear reason why some of the phones are affected.
More info on the google forums too
https://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!categories/nexus/powering-your-device
Since I've been in 7.0 and now on 7.1.1. never had that battery issue. I suppose or doesn't happen with all phones.

I'm pleased to hear you and a lot of other users report no issue.
Hopefully being a Nexus, there will be a prompt fix by Google for those affected.
I too have been pleased with battery life 6.0.1 then 7.0 now 7.1.1
But yes I have many peeps saying that their battery life is real bad on Nougat .
But my personal experiences have been positive.

Problem with certain apps crashing such as Spotify after update to android Oreo 8.0

Hi, I really want to know that are there any P10+ users facing the same problem as me.
Few weeks ago. Around mid march 2018, finally the long awaited android oreo 8.0 came to my p10+. I was so happy. However, after the update. I realised the upside is the battery life. Other than that. I've notice some bugs and inconsistency. For example the most prominent one for me is that the Spotify app keep crashing. It is really annoying. I mean it's a good phone. I just don't understand why 8.0 is so bad and not properly optimised for p10+. When it was 7.0 its fine. Please give me some feedback. Thanks

Hi.I'm not experinced (yet) any issues with Oreo on my P10 Plus,i got the latest update B365 that i starting this month,i'm using Spotify Premium and i don't find any issues. You're using the original apk from PlayStore?Cause i had issues when Spotify has not yet on my country available. My battery life it's now better since i update to Oreo,i got 70% for example now and used by 10 h almost,2 hours on LTE connected by Spotify.I suggest update your phone and see after if it's something from the software or perhaps the phone.
I have the same issue. I don't know if its updated, but since April and May camera, Google map, gallery, Facebook, Instagram will just freeze. I just restart the phone. That's only temporary fix, any solutions....

8.1 update rolling out!

So about 1,1 GB update is available for us. What is your opinion on the update? Did it fix all of your issues or brought you way more issues?
The hissing sound is finally gone, I can't see any bug right there (someone faced the uncertified bug, but for me isn't here, maybe try to reboot), I'll see if the battery now isn't draining too much like in May update
If hissing is fixed, can anyone extract necessary audio related files?
Under phone info there is a (prerelease) kernel, dunno why
There's now Gestures under system settings!

Phone works slower, seems to be laggy now, it used to be very snappy on 8.0.
I had no bugs on 8.0... update deleted my messages.
It's quite disappointing that android one gets bugged 8.1 literally 7 months after it goes public

my phone got snappier after update, but fingerprint scanner got a bit slower.
My phone certainly felt slower after the 8.1 update.
I did not encounter the SMS message bug but some hours after the update I lost WiFi connection altogether (could not enable WiFi, mac address 2:0:0:0... I had no choice but to reflash from stock image. After the reflash I'm still at 8.0, as the reflash phone is not seeing the 8.1 update yet.
FYI I use Magisk and Franco kernel app. When the 8.1 update is available for my phone again I'm going to take more time with backup and checking that there are no compatibility issues.
Hey guys, I'm still on that first may update. didn't even update the 2nd one of may that was 58mbs. Everyone keeps saying that it lowers the volume of the speaker. Is that true?? and does the June update fixes that or just keeps it lowered?

Wifi MAC address problem ìs not from stock 8.1 but from incompatible kernel (like FK for now).
A pretty decent update in my case. Didn't encounter any bugs or issues so far, only that phone was really slow after first boot but after maybe 10 minutes or so it started working as fast as 8.0.
I like how the colors are now changing according to the dominant color of the wallpaper, but tinting on lockscreen or under notifications in that same color is a little bit weird... but I'll probably get used to it.

8.1 update, lost all stored sms messages and SafetyNet check fails... Everything is stock and has aleays been stock so this is Xiaomi's fault
Xiaomi pulled the 8.1 update and its no longer available so we should wait until they release a bug-free version of it.
Did this fix the scroll lag?
Xiaomi pulled back the update. Those updated should receive an incremental update to fix bugs.
You had one job, and for how many times Xiaomi is pulling updates after they release is to their devices, in this case, to Mi A1?
Really, we are talking about the Android One device, and only one device that is out there on the market.
And for the love of God, this is 8.1 update, nothing major.
Looking forward what they will do with the 9.0 update and how long we will wait for it.
Luckily, on my dad´s Mi A1, it is still 8.0 and february security patch, I was waiting for this update to install on his phone but this happens. Also I don´t know if it is true about the audio, it is lowered after some updates after may month I think. I don´t know if everyone is affected or not.
