Hi guys,
I was just wondering what car makes & models you use with your Android Head Unit?
I'm currently looking for a (used) car to buy that I wish to upgrade with an Android Head Unit. Unfortunately I'm having trouble finding many cars (made in the last 10 years) with a 2 DIN slot, so I was wondering what cars are people using with their Android Head Unit.
Thanks in advance.
Having bought Joying HU I had to spend many years to find a car to match and failed. I had to print my car around Joying HU on a 3-d printer, and now I almost happy. So is Joying:

lol. But seriously what car model are you using it on?
I like the way Joying works with VW/Skoda cars dated 2006-2013 for having CAN bus adapter and factory equipment looks.
First unit (Pumpkin) was in a 2003 Chevy Suburban. I now have a 2013 RAM (Dodge) 1500 with a Joying Sofia and I just put one in my wife's 2005 Infiniti G35 about two weeks ago.
Suburban was easy, RAM required a cause install kit I had to file down a bit. The Infiniti was a huge pain. Wiring harness didn't have all wires so I had to splice into some. The heat and AC controls are on the same circuit board as the radio, so it all has to be replaced. The aftermarket install kit is expensive and chinsy (from what I read) so I paid a little more and got a double din factory panel, made for the Nissan Skyline, sent from Japan.

Looks really good though, nice job.
Look at my report:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...port-unit-px3-2gb-16gb-android-7-1-2-t3726311
This is in a 2013 Altima V6. Great car and even better with this unit.
My car came with the 5" display (backup camera, XM radio, USB but no navigation).
The fit and finish are exemplary.
Another v6 Nissan Altima here, 2017 3.5SL, got the 10.2" Dasaita px5 2gb octo-core running Malaysia rom v6.2.
Wiring was a bit of a pain, reseller sent the wrong wiring harness and canbus adapter. Hacked together a new harness and managed to get them to send the correct canbus adapter.
Overall very happy with the results, integration with oem backup camera, steering controls, etc. Audio quality is its biggest downfall, but I think this is also b/c the Altima bose setups are junk

Do you have the same FM radio app as I have? (the one that does not let you change the name of stations in memory). I am curious to find out if there is a better one somewhere.

I use the stock one, I only really listen to one station other than that it's Spotify or audible. I remember seeing someone made a custom radio app on here for these Android units, but I never tried it. Can't seem to find it in the main px5 app repo thread though maybe it was removed
I dont know how to google right term so im gonna ask here. Why manufacturers like Pioneer,Sony,Kenwood wont produce HU with complete android operating system?

OK, it's not a severe problem as the radio works well enough, but it is irritating that something that sounds as simple as being able to enter a name for a stored station is not available. I also saw that the FCC launcher has a page for saving radio stations' names, but that does not work with my radio app and I could not find what app I am supposed to use.

A) They want to control the entire user experience
B) Not be liable for people running third party apps on branded equipment
C) They're building music players / navigation devices for the mainstream, not hackable devices for nerds.
Thanks leonkernan for answer. Well i must say that i never looked in that direction But you pretty much nailed the point. Next question. So nowadays they offer car stereos with android auto or apple car play. Are they providing updates for that apps installed on car stereo, how is that managable? (english is not my native so i'm sorry in advance )

Anyone using theirs in an Evo? I have an Evo 8MR, and I'm somewhat limited to what I can buy, which sucks. I wanted to try something that looks more oem, but meh.
I drive a 2015 Camry, has 12 steering wheel buttons on 3 lines, plenty of room for a universal 2-din mounted in an aftermarket adapter. Has CAN but I never did anything with that. I'm interfaced to the oem GPS antenna, Mic, and aux/usb input.
I put a Pumpkin unit into my E46, worked very well, but Pumpkin don't like to share their firmware,
so in my VW EOS I put a Joying UK-JY-VM130N2D specifically made for the UK market, but supplied with German language apps and base system for some peculiar reason. Joying are easy to get along with, they will answer emails, but only one per day, once again for reasons known only to the Chinese mentality. My daughter-in-law is Chinese and she also does things in a weird way to my western mind......
Anyway, the joying was the best experience, it did suffer from the battery drain problem with the original can-bus module that came with it, but Joying sent one free of charge and that fixed it. This one has a digital amplifier built-in and it sounds great to my old ears-in my misspent youth I was a rock band member and we always used the same setup on stage so my right ear is pretty shot.
I have since disposed of the E46, but I use the EOS daily and the unit does all I want. I did the heatsink and fan mod advocated by so many on here, but to be honest, in the ****ty weather we get here in Poole most of the year there is no problem with overheating!
Piccies of the E46 and EOS installs attached. The first is the E46 with Pumpkin, second is the E46 with original head unit, third is the original MFD2 EOS head unit (for sale) and last is the EOS with the Joying unit.

It's said to be open source. But, this seems to be based on hardware similar to the other units being discussed around here. Does it have an MCU, and if so, is the source code for the MCU also available? I also don't see any applications (Radio, Aux In, etc.) on GitHub.
my car is not on your list (2014 mazda6). Do you have a generic model that fits most standard double din?
Or is there any way possible you have other models that support a 2014 mazda 6? I'd love to get my hands on one of these if I could

Thanks for your reply. We haven't gone that far as mentioned in campaign that some parts are in binary. We try first open step from AOSP. However, seems people asked more information on OctaCore.

Sorry, 2014 Mazda6 is not supported at this moment. We do have generic model for double din which named Universal Unit. However, I don't think it will work with your car since canbus decoding is needed for 2014Mazda6.

So, it's not open source. You're just releasing the kernel source, which the other manufacturers are supposed to be doing but aren't.

it is standard double din in terms of size of the metal part. However, to make head unit 'seamless' fitting to your car, we need a suitable panel.
Do you have a photo of old head unit? If it is similar as attached pic, then there is not problem by an Universal head unit.

Well, mine is 2012 and it has factory amplifier and it use to have a nav-unit which I've
replaced for a Klyde unit. Hence my question. I definitely need both can-bus boxes.
Again, can you supply it or not? Thanks
I would love to back something like this, but I have a few questions.
1. Why are all the head unit manufacturers still using old Rockchip and Allwinner CPUs that only support up to 4.4.x? Why not choose a more modern chipset that will run Lollipop (or even, should I dare, Marshmallow)? It's 2015, and to come out the gate with an old chipset that only runs Kit Kat is rather disappointing.
2. Closed-source MCU is really the downfall of these head units. I've owned a couple of different types, and the MCU is always the weakest link. The Newsmy doesn't support audio mixing (no EQ) without software EQ, the HuiFei and clones don't support the EQ using FM or auxiliary inputs, and capped "shut-down" times are extremely annoying. Why not do the same as locking the screen and put the device in a lower power mode? The Newsmy community at least worked around this with xdAuto ROMs that allow up to 2 days standby, but that's only because someone at Newsmy posted the ROM source accidentally. Some still have wake issues, etc that would be easily resolved if the MCU were open source.
3. Will this have pre-amp outputs for external amplifiers? A separate channel for subwoofer that doesn't send all audio frequencies? Front and rear pre-amp outs?
If these things were addressed, I'd highly consider backing a project like this. But especially without open source MCU, those of us who have experience with other units would be very hesitant. Designing a new product in 2015 that's capped at Kit Kat from old 2012-2013ish chipsets don't help move things forward either.
What would it cost to add a dedicated panel/harness to the 189 octa perk? I'd be putting it in a 2006 Ford F150.
I've some further questions, have you implemented the BT mod for external mic and also the audio mod?
All displayed in threads above.
Very good questions. Please check my comments in quote.

I think this is because development of Android head unit is not that easy. The process takes longer time than mobile phones and tablets which normally come from IC vendor's reference design, maybe turn-key solution. Android head unit development team needs to handle more tech issues which are not found in mobile phones and tablets. Developers are also lack due to attraction of mobile phone industry. Market size of Android Head unit is maybe 1% of Android phone's.
Good news is, in our OctaCore(2GB DDR) solution, porting of Lollipop is in progress.
2. Closed-source MCU is really the downfall of these head units. I've owned a couple of different types, and the MCU is always the weakest link. Open MCU is a bit hard. Firstly, it is normally based on a particular development platform with NDA and in-house tools. Secondly, MCU software is very much connected to hardware control which must be handled very carefully. Thirdly, even you have source, sometimes you may not build a bin if lack of tools and documents.
Doing shutdown in stead of sleep mode is a safer choice than running out of one's old battery and you may not start car next morning. In fact, it is also the industry's choice even in aftermarket. Local distributors in many countries demand <5mA power consuming when acc off.
3. Will this have pre-amp outputs for external amplifiers? A separate channel for subwoofer that doesn't send all audio frequencies? Front and rear pre-amp outs?
pre-amp output is there with a wire for subwoofer.
If these things were addressed, I'd highly consider backing a project like this. But especially without open source MCU, those of us who have experience with other units would be very hesitant. Thanks

Unfortunately with 97 views so far, no one can/will answer my questions.
I'm afraid to buy any unit at the moment until I get advice.
Suppose the question I should ask is for 250-300 dollars what's the best unit one can buy?
Thanks
That's how I feel. I've think I've ruled out the indash from the thread it seems there are a lot of bugs. The joying seems to be the most popular but not enough feed back from real world experience.

I am also still waiting and cannot decide which one to buy. I definitely want a unit which has Android 5.1 and is compatible with MTCD units so that I can flash Malaysk's ROM.
For me the question is, should I wait for 2GB RAM or not? Who knows how long we have to wait for that?

I'm in the same boat, so unfortunately, I don't have any answers to help either.
InDash is a good $150 more, but the internal components are much better. It seems to me the biggest issue with that unit is the software, so there are opportunities to fix those bugs. The community is smaller, but there is hope.
But is hope worth $150 bucks?
doctorman on here is a Joying reseller or something. He's pretty good at answering stuff. I sent him an email about a different question, and I got an Out of Office reply. Said he would be back Tuesday i think. So just wait a day or so, and I'm sure he'll give you the rundown.
as the others have said, In-Dash has way better hardware specs, but it is new, and those bugs can be fixed, but at the same time, they haven't sold that many units. In the In-Dash thread, people's order numbers were like #15, and they seemed to be somewhat sequential. So at some point they may decide they are not selling enough units to make it worthwhile to keep working on the software.
Pumpking and Joying have been in business for a long time, so they have more reasons to keep working on the software. Also check out RoadNavi.com, they have a pretty active forum, and a thread on here for the S160. Seems like support is pretty good.
Roadnavi website been down all day. Pumpking seems to have the most users or reviews that are positive on amazon...

Had to trim my bezel so not sure if it's actually true din size.
Bluetooth speakerphone using the radio builtin mic works pretty good, just as good as my pioneer. Call voice comes through passenger side speaker only and haven't found an option to charge that.
You Tube, Facebook, gmail, gmaps, igo, SiriusXM and waze work well
Reverse Cam looks good
LCD actually suprizingly works very good even in day light. Nice and Brite.
It's locked up on me maybe twice that I can recall. No big deal. Response and speed overall is good.
Very happy so far.

My understanding is the Jeep specific one is not Android 5.1.1, its only 4.4. your GUI will look different from his. Has anyone gotten 5.1.1 to work on the Jeep specific one? I have been waiting for confirmation from Candy at Joying that the Universal 5.1.1 Head unit they have will fit and work with Canbus in the Jeep.. I've heard/read that the hardward in the 5.1.1 version is better for sound quality.. that and the DSP. I could be wrong though??

Mine is 5.1, at least that is what is says it is. The 5.1 is not on the Joying website yet, but it is on the Amazon Joying page, and Joying said it was legit:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IB8V2AO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And if you go to the Car Joying website, and look at the "Android 5.1 Car stereo" section across the top, there is a drop down menu that shows Jeep Android 5.1 Car Stereo:
https://www.carjoying.com/android-5-1-car-stereo/jeep-android-5-1-car-stereo.html
It just doesn't show up yet.
But I think I found the answer to the interface. I looked at their blog and there are 3 to 4 updates to the Android 5.1 versions, and one says "Date: Apr 30, 2016 - NEW UI Interface for android 5.1.1 lollipop"
https://www.carjoying.com/Joying-blog/42.html
I'm going to try those this week
Well, I was wrong above again. Looks like I have a current MCU, shows June 2016. Not sure how to get the interface. I emailed Joying to see what they say.

So been using it for two weeks and I am VERY happy with it. If you have a hot spot it's just like using your phone.
Some notes for those of you that have the unit to help with install.
I connected the antenna amplifier (Optional) to the Blue labeled antenna power output on the radio.
I thought the GPS and Home buttons did not illuminate but they do. You have to connect the illumination wire (Orange with White Stripe) to 12V Acc or to your cars illumination wire and the buttons light up. They transition into different colors not sure how to change that yet.
Video player does not work (Safety feature) Not sure if grounding the brake wire will bypass this.
The iGo software for GPS is fantastic, I do get GPS signal lost periodically, we have had bad weather lately so not sure whats up with that yet
Key 1 - Key 2 mystery - I have the axxess ASWC steering wheel adapter. Connecting Key 1 or Key 2 to the pink wire (cut the connector off the axxess) and I am able to setup the Steering wheel controls Vol +, Vol - and Mute. Nothing else works (2007 NBS Silverado). Still messing with that. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I think I need to manually program the Axxess Radio selection to a HU that matches the Joying. I read somewhere that Pioneer is the best match. The Axxess unit worked fine with my previous Pioneer HU.
Sub woofer output is a single mono port, needed a Y-Adapter to connect to my Sub-AMP.
Touch screen response is actually pretty good - requires a little pressure to respond.
FM radio reception is crappy - Even with the amp (Little better) - Haven't tried AM yet.

do you have an option to allow it in Car Settings or something like that? Mine did
I just got mine. I'm still wiring up the amps, but so far I can tell... The radio sounds like a low bit rate mp3. I don't listen to the radio a whole lot, so not entirely a big deal. Anything other than the radio seems to sound fine. Need to do more testing. The built in amp seems OK but don't expect a lot of output without distortion once the volume gets past 80 percent.
If I can fine tune the sound a bit more I'm sure I'll keep this thing. It is pretty cool what you can do with it.
Sorry. I have not been on this part of forums in a while.
I have a joying HU. Im pretty sure every HU owner (Joying or not will agree that android HU are good) so I will just tell you about a few of my bad points.
My car is a Mazda3
I did not buy a car specific HU so i got a universal one because of the better specs, so I got the wiring harness with it also.
They did not provide me with a CANBUS so that I can use the LCD screen of my car (which shows time etc).
Another problem I had was that initially when I conntected the head unit I could not hear any sound. Apparently it was due to some blue ant wire or something needing to be connected to the amp. So the local shop done that.
I also was given the rear view camera but I have not installed that. Again this is because I do not have the CANBUS for the car so I cannot be bothered taking the wire from back of the car to the front.
Joying did say they will tell me when the CANBUS is available but due to lack of communication and language barrier I have not been able to find out.
Other than that the HU is great and would recommend it to anyone.
Installed the OP unit in my BRZ last evening.
Need to figure out how to update the interface.
The unit actually works slightly better than I was expecting as far as the touch screen and speed.
The colors are a little washed out on the display but its ok.
The problem I'm having is the same as the other thread in here about the Bluetooth. It doesn't pair with certain devices and when it does pair it crashes the app trying to turn the Bluetooth on.
Trying to get a resolution from Joying..
Joying or Xtrons 10.1" Android 6.0 2/32Gb in double-din? Are these my best options?
2007 Toyota (Camry) Solara SLE convertible with JBL (7 speaker w/ separate amp) stereo option (no navigation)
Looking for:
Android head unit (recent updates and as futureproof as possible)
Big screen for regular nav use
Spotify (store and play locally to avoid bluetooth)
Pair with my Android phone for calls, updates and downloads via wifi from phone, etc.
Dial in sound as much as possible with EQ, proper control over 7 speaker system, sub level, etc.
Top contenders I've been able to find seem to be this 10.1" quad-core 2GB/32GB A6.0 unit from Joying:
edit: system won't allow me to post link
and this 64bit 10.1" octo-core 2GB/32GB A6.0 unit from Xtrons:
edit: system won't allow me to post link
Open to other options as well. Not clear yet if either can be (or should be) rooted. For instance, I woul like to really dial in the sound with a 10+ band EQ, but not clear if I can just download an app for that. Overall, not clear about any proprietary overlays they may have over stock android, and any issues that may cause, or features I may lose if I root system.
Also, how problematic are these oversized 10.1" screens in a double din socket? Theft issues? Brittle disconnect? Some reports of Joying not fitting properly in double din and needing to file down dash panel. Even the 7" ones look like they don't fit properly in double din, though, and stick out a bit with bezel. Is there a better option?
After playing with Joying these few weeks, Anything else is a better choice at this moment. I can only imagine the support from the manufacturer would be more helpful.

Update:
I just took a look at the xtrons website, OMG!!!!!! I will NEVER purchase another Joying devices.......period!!!!!!!
That's quite unfortunate to hear since I have read several times that Joying has decent CS as compared to any of the other Chinese manufacturers.
I suppose there are some other options, but the last one I looked at (Pioneer? I forget) was $1300 for what looked like the same features (both units I mentioned are in the $350-420 range)

Looks like a contender on paper. Not 100% sure how to check if that's exact fit for solara sle with jbl option.
Looks like all the obd/tps, etc are extra addons. Would I still need a wiring harness to connect to steering controls, existing amp, etc, or does the fact that it's purpose built for camry mean that comes with?
Not entirely thrilled about purchasing from overseas from a company that clearly doesn't understand English very well. At least they take paypal. At the moment, though, can't even get through to see price as several of their links not working. Could be outdated chrome I'm on at the moment, though. Will check later on another computer.
edit: nope. No price listed, and buy link not working in FF either.

Specific brand/model units come with can-bus decoder that makes swc and everything works as expected as stock units. But ask to any seller

Have asked about canbus, and awaiting answer. Anyone know of a definitive source to see if my 2007 Camry Solara SLE with JBL option would fit a kit that just says 2007 Camry? Also would like to verify wiring issues with someone other than foreign manufacturer (pain to return if wrong) about wiring for jbl option specifically since it has it's own amp that can't be bypassed since spkrs have weird impedance, etc and are dialed for that amp. I see on several of the general wiring harnesses out there that they differentiate between jbl option and non for this model.

Yes i received it..first thing i did was update firmware from thr mtcd forum.. 2.52 is latest then i put Malaysk's rom on it.. which allowed for root and is customized. The unit boots quickly.. a few seconds and radio starts playing. Screen is clear and easy to read. All menus seem smooth. One issue is the bezel design. It protrudes from the front of the display about a 1/2". When setting things up and you need to click on buttons near the edge its easy to fat finger.. i wanted the analog rotary knob.. but now if they offered flat pushbuttons and reduced bezel height it maybe better. Finding dash kits is difficult.. none really fit right.. tried 3 kinds.. 2 were same brand but for different cars and was the only brand that fit.. Metra is the dash kit i would recommend.. did have to modify how the brackets attached the unit.. and ypu cant use the frame they include.. it dosent fit around the bezel of the radio. So there is an ever slight gap around the unit. But functionally it seems pretty nice..

Toyota prius with jbl.. i did get a pac adapter for the jbl amp that came with the car. Im also installing this unit in a sienna. It came with 2 wiring harness. One is a ISO the other im unsure.. they had connectors on both ends. So if you can find an iso to your car make harness.. there would be no wiring other than steering wheel controls, back up camera ,etc.. no adapter needed for sterring wheel controls.. just find the 2 wires from your oem radio.. connect to key1 and key2 wires then through the system settings there is a setup for teaching the steering control functions.. just hold but down and you then select its function.. mine had volume, channel, mode, voice commands, make call, and end call.. all mapped perfectly

I had similar issue when I was installing the Joying Intel version into my Ford Edge. I had to take my unit and the bezel to a local guy to custom fit it so I could install it correctly. Also still waiting for custom rom for it.
Was curious if anyone was still looking at 10.1's? I have been kicking them around for a year and some change, I keep getting caught up in the stats. I see they come out with a new O/S but then have the old chipset or vice versa. What I like that I see is 8.0 O/S Octacore with 4gb but can't seem to find a brand to do it all together in a 10.1. The three brands I had been kicking around is Pumpkin, Joying, and started to think about Phoenix since I talked to them at SEMA but have since dropped the ball on emails about custom options. I started looking at their Telsa screen setup and was hoping to get something where I could input my car into the home screen but they didn't respond to my email.
Anyways, I would really appreciate some input because once I get a few other things on the car finished up I want to start into the stereo system. Thanks in advance and sorry to thread jack but didn't want to start something new when this was so similar.
Decided to pull the trigger, now I have to figure out all the cool features.

Intel has stopped pursuing the mobile market.. so its the last intel processor you will see for any android device

This Intel Sofia was/is the only unit that could tether via BT because that has the BT chip on the SoM. I was looking for this feature and I haven't seen it in any other chinese unit in the last 3 years. Also this Joying Intel Sofia has a quite decent phone sound quality both ways... Compared with the rest of the Chinese units of course.
In my opinion the only downside is the poor Android implementation, phone Interface app, BT poor implementation... And the Heat that the SoM puts out... No active cooling... No proper heatsink. Yeah it might work ok but working at 60-80C (depending on the load) it will not last a very long time.
Hope they keep Intel a bit longer !

Yeah, I've seen those, I am expecting some prices but to be honest some pictures of the motherboard are more interesting for me... I hope I can upgrade mine
"No Heating" - interesting - appears Joying acknoledge that the Sofia units exhibit an overheating issue. Perhaps these are a v1.2 with passive cooling and a fancy coloured rear heatsink.
Anything coloured gold is performance, right?
I think we all know the hardware isnt the issue per-se and these resellers hook consumers in with "latest, new look, shiny" in an effort to overlook software performance shortcommings of these cheap chinese units.
More likley these units have been manufactured at even lower costs to increase sell margins and that rear panel looks like a development demo which I have doubts over the amp IC heatsink performance.

I am guessing it is a class D amp, hence not much heat dissipation required.

Yes, but their amp in the current Sofia units is most likely D class and it's straight up ****, hence I did the Pioneer chip swap.

The TDA7830 and TDA7388 are both class AB amplifiers. The pioneer 'upgrade' anecdotally improves audio performance (albeit slight) and can only be assured genuine if the IC was purchased from an authorised pioneer spare parts supplier.

That right there made me give up on upgrading the amp. I could not find in my area a seller that could sell me the real thing... An authorized reseller.
So do these actually have a better sound quality? Also does the EQ adjustments on the stereo actually work or are they still a 3 band in this?
Right now I'm deciding between a joying unit or the evo x specific unit (Octa Core model will have 7.1.1 released in two months! Talked to the manufactuer) But the evo unit doesn't have great sound, and that's the one big thing I want out of these, plus I cant find anything on if the audio chip is replaceable on the MCTD.

You dont want to be replacing an audio IC. Use external amps if this is important to you.
My advice is to assess the pros and cons between all units - which are generally software issues - and then decide. I see two options - px5 (mtcd) or JY sofia, the latter due to bluetooth on the CPU board.
Otherwise look for a reputable mainstream branded unit, if cost is not a factor.
I think I'm going to go with the Hotaudio headunit and if that fails. I'll just make my own and use the HA unit case and screen.
The new HA evo x unit already has a TDA7851 which should make a bit of a difference for SQ.

i finally got Joying to tell me what model i have:
JY-UMS02N2 this model number.
https://www.carjoying.com/2017-new-...gr-os-fm-am-rds-entertainment-system-775.html
They sent me the 10 inch single din with the amp as a replacement unit. I didn't know what model it was, but they finally let me know. I'll post some videos of it this weekend.
As a recap for those who don't hang on my every word:
I had the 8 inch Intel unit with no amp, and it lasted about 8 months and died:
https://youtu.be/79exJTejt6A
https://youtu.be/OiXP4y8IdgQ
I replaced it with a Sony XAV-AX100 that sounded amazing:
https://youtu.be/iG4Q15VeLFA
https://youtu.be/Ox5C8bZmItA
But i missed full Android, so I ordered the 10.1 inch Seicane:
https://youtu.be/mHTSLw4HBUw
Before I got the Seicane in, Joying sent me their replacement, which was apparently JY-UMS02N2, which has the amp. While it didnt' sound as good as the Sony, it was night and day difference over the old Joying and my current Seicane.

Glad it sounds better and might help sway me, though I could do with 2 rear outs and not front outs... Unless you can control them separately as then it won't make a difference but need to set them louder independently to the speakers in the normal iso connection if that makes sense
Be interesting to know if it really does run cooler! Failing that it will be a modded 1 din android 5 version.

Hi there,
I could really use some advice here. I want to order a Android head unit for my Volkswagen Golf MK4. Been searching online for a few weeks and now I have decided that it's enough and I just want to buy (a good) one.
These units caught my attention:
Xtrons TQ709IPL
https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07R97K2YK/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_3TShEb77DEKGH
This is the unit with the Hexa Core Rockchip PX6. For this unit I need a 2din frame/adapter to build it in my car, and I dont really like how that looks.

I prefer a head unit that doesn't require that. But I don't think it's smart to base my decision on something that's not even really important.
Xtrons PBX79MTW
https://www.amazon.de/gp/aw/d/B07WY5LQBV/ref=ox_sc_act_image_2?smid=A1JXBN61FP8ZAW&psc=1
What i like about this one is that it's a perfect fit for my car, looks great imo and that it got physical buttons since i have no steering wheel control. Both these head units have 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM. I think the Hexa core CPU is faster, or is it not that big of a difference?
I also noticed this, and I don't really understand what it means
Bluetooth modules: TQ709IPL "Independent – Strong anti-interference ability."
PBX79MTW "Detached Module--Better Bluetooth calling quality."
Wi-Fi modules: TQ709IPL "Independent – Strong anti-interference ability."
PBX79MTW "Detached Module--Better signal receiving, anti-interference."
I'm from the Netherlands so all that tech talk is a bit hard for me to understand. I also hope my post isn't a mess that nobody understands lol.
All help is appreciated, if you think another head unit would be better, please let me know
I would go with the more modern TQ709IPL with Hexa Core Rockchip PX6. I recently purchased the TQ709IPL after lots of research. That processor has lower power consumption and it is much faster than the older octa-core chipsets (PX5). Looks like the PBX79MTW is PX5 based. The PX6 is powerful enough to run emulators and such for in-dash gaming. The older chips imo would struggle.
I read "detached module" and "independent" for the modules to mean the same thing. But can't be certain since they don't specify the chipset being used.
With the Xtrons TQ709IPL you may have to modify the double-din (2-din) frame adapter, which might be ugly or annoying. The Metra kits (I'm using a 95-3302) opening I measured with a caliper: 173.04 mm x 97.12 mm. The faceplate for the TQ709IPL measures: 176 mm x 102 mm. So I'm going to have to trim down the 2-din adapter to make it all flush. Luckily these 2-din adapters are only $8-10 if you shop around, so you might buy two in case of cutting/modifying mistakes. I plan to use a rotary tool like a dremel to trim the side and top openings.

Same for me here. I went for a Xtrons PQ89UNVIP hexacore with the PX6. It is fast and ultraresponsive. Then on the other hand I hate not having physical buttons and knobs for volume. So that was definitely a decission maker for me.

So did you buy one? What did you get? Given what you wrote, I hope you chose the one that is a perfect fit for your car with the looks and the knobs and the buttons that you obviously like.
I assume, since both are current XTRONS units, they will mostly behave the same on software-driven tasks. They BOTH have adequate hardware to be a good head unit, but does the newer/faster unit have any significantly better amp, DAC or DSP ICs? Do the units sound different (and would you notice if they did)?
While we all like faster processors over slower ones on our desktops and in our hands, let's not lose sight of what a head unit's primary jobs are: great sound; easy controls accessible while driving; a display that's easy to see at a glance (while driving); reliable hands free call handling; etc, etc. Since you didn't mention any of these "core requirements", think about them and then and ask yourself if you really plan to spend lots of time sitting in your parked car while gaming on the head unit display instead of your smartphone (or perhaps a tablet that isn't actually hardwired into your car)?
You might also ask yourself which choice would be more likely to excite a potential buyer when you choose to sell your Golf. I say verify that the one you like the ergonomics of has the software and hardware necessary to a be good head unit. Then buy it.
My years-old "smart TV" doesn't need to be faster... How fast should my car's HU be?

I haven't been paying close attention to the evolution of this new category of entertainment you mention: "In-dash gaming". Any popular titles you can sight? Like maybe "Death-race 2020"? Sounds cool. I've been looking for something more to do while I'm driving and texting. But seriously, what am I missing?

Same for me here. I went for a Xtrons PQ89UNVIP hexacore with the PX6. It is fast and ultraresponsive. Then on the other hand I hate not having physical buttons and knobs for volume. So that was definitely a decission maker for me.

I feel your pain on the missing knobs. I'm also a bit envious of "fast and ultraresponsive" because I bought an arguably underpowered Android Head Unit about 6 months ago - an ATOTO A6 Pro (A6Y2721PRB). It has just 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. ATOTO doesn't highlight the SoC/CPU specs in their marketing because they kinda suck. I confess to getting annoyed at the lag in the UI while putting a destination into Google maps, but all the media apps I've loaded (like Pandora, Spotify, Amazon Prime Video, BBC News, etc.) run fine.
HOWEVER, while I occassionally wish the A6 Pro were more responsive, it's still the best car stereo I've ever used. It turns on immediately (from suspended state) as soon as I start the car; it has a good Toshiba pre-amp/amplifier chip that sounds great (4 x 49W peak; 4 x 29W RMS); it feeds my powered subwoofer nicely; the IPS display is bright and easily viewed from the driver's seat on a bright day; when I shift into reverse the backup camera view is displayed instantly, its dual Bluetooth implementation for audio (v5 + aptX), call handling and OBD2 data is solid.
But here's the thing, now that the novelty of having an android tablet in my car's console has diminished, I'm realizing I have little interest in using it for anything more than media entertainment while driving or maybe pulling over to watch a breaking story from CBS News... I've spent plently of time messing with it to configure things just right, but I don't feel the urge to stay in my car to use yet another Android device in the console (I've got a more powerful one in my pocket).
.
So, for Android Head Units, faster is better. No arguement. But at some point, clearly somewhere beyond my A6 Pro, faster may not be really useful (for aftermarket head units not responsible for stuff like automated driving). I would be curious to learn what apps are now pushing the limits of head unit performance. DRVs? Augmented reality for "in-dash gaming"? AI Assistants outside of our smartphones (what was that the name of the car in that old David Hasselhoff series)? Some of these things may be huge!
