I know that title is a bit confusing, but I'm rather confused at the system layout of Wear OS. I have a Zen Watch 2, but my questions are not device specific, so this forum is likely the best place to post. My watch has Wear version 2.10 and Android version 7.1.1. The two platforms are completely separate in the terms of development, but both are present on the same device. Where do the two systems converge? Is Wear OS merely an overlay/skin onto a modified version of Android OS? Or does this mean that 2.10 Wear OS is built using 7.1.1 as the platform? This came up in a conversation recently and I didn't know how to answer. I'm stumped.
its just marketing bull**** ...Android wear is crap and will always be crap ...

Check this and then Google for more of what Android Wear / Wear OS can do. More changes with 2.9 and now 2.10.

Hello,
I just wanted to know if the Android Wear Project is also getting open source, cause we have so many Smartwatches that are allready based on Android (Gear, Moto Actv,...) so porting Android Wear over to them is not the hardest thing.
If you find something, please let me know!
Regards
Yes, IMO a VERY important question that hasn't been answered yet.
I would be concerned that Google felt it was TOO open with Android proper and tried to restrict Wear even more.
If the current preview emulator is a good indication, then Wear is just another variant of Android. Many normal apps can run on it right now, though with issues. I tested my own app and it more or less worked, with a squished UI.
So I think a LOT of the Wear code is effectively already IN AOSP already.
But will Google release enough Wear specific code for custom ROMs to be built ? I very much hope so.
i
That will be gr8
custom launchers
like wht devs did on galaxy gear (they installed nova launcher on it)
or using custom keyboard like minuum beside voice input.

Prayer is the only remote hope you have, I think.
There are reasons Gears are going cheap now.
You really think Samsung won't take every opportunity to sell you new wearables, EVERY year at least ?
EVERY few months, new, "in fashion" designs.
Every year, moar cores, LOL.

That's genius! Perfect winter accessory:silly:
Android wear without wear
Couldn't we just built a custom android wear version which is based on one of the regular open source android versions? Like e.g. android kitkat with a special launcher and a way to display notifications similar to android wear

IMO they're going to need to for it to be usable by the pro-android anti-google crowd.
I have the LG G Watch and I have it unlocked with TWRP and a custom ROM on it. However it still can't connect to my phone unless I have a Google account on it, so I can use the Play Store to download the Android Wear app and connect it via Bluetooth.
So I figured "fine whatever, I'll just put it in airplane mode and use it as a regular watch until someone comes up with an Open Source solution" right?
Wrong, turns out I CAN'T EVEN CHANGE THE TIME! It updates that from the phone which updates from the time servers on the net. Good thing I have an older phone that I can stick Google on to work with it I guess.
All I want is my texts on my watch without having to get spied upon by the almighty Google.
Also, they should call it AWOSP because it sounds awesome.
Hi guys, my team is working on a new wearable prototype. We are working with a development board based on a MIPS process which is capable to run "out of the box" both Android KitKat and Android Lollipop.
At the moment we also got two AMOLED touch displays, a squared one with a resolution of 320x320 and a round one with a resolution of 400x400.
We have queried Google multiple times without any answer so far so i will give a shot on this forum.
Right now we are choosing the path of creating a custom Android ROM for our devices and a Kiosk Application that will run on top of them, said that, is there any way we can download and build locally the Android Wear OS ROM? We cannot find it on Google code like we do for Android 4.4 and 5.0 so I was wondering if there is any ROM released that can be installed on our development board without breaking any Google's copyright.
Any link or feedback would be really appreciated
I've ordered a U8 smartwatch off Amazon.co.uk and when I get it I want to toy with it but I am just wondering if anyone has attempted to put android on it?
not possible, specs are way too low for that
What about the u10?
Could you put android on the u10 smart watch?
no
even though RAM is bigger, it's still only 128mb
processor is only 300mhz
chinese smartwatches don't have the specs to run anything but the limited firmware they have preinstalled

False. There are multiple Chinese smartwatches that run Android.
hmm, i was thinking android wear, android would require a cellular modem, no?
Not necessarily. The cell side in Android can be hidden, like how a lot of tablets have hidden dialers in them even when they didn't have cell radios. I would not be surprised if there's a lot of cellphone specific code in Wear as well.
As far as Wear, if one had full source they could compile a working Wear build for a number of Chinese smartwatches. In fact, Com1 did it on their prototype, but because they were not part of Google's exclusive "Wear Partners" club, Google shut Com1 down.
for both android and android wear you'd need drivers though, to access all hardware, so you would need a kernel specific for the watch
available?
Most Chinese smartwatches are MTK based, so no.
so it's not possible then
Depends. The TS has a custom ROM and git which was cobbled together from multiple bits of sourcecode. It's mostly a matter of how much work one wants to put into it.
I wonder if there would be a possibility by developers to implement the Android Wear system in these models.
I read a news that supports Android Wear SIM
You could get in the future?
Thank you

It would be great, but as far as I know the platform is not compatible with Android Wear sadly.
Hello, everyone, I'm sorry if this is a stupid question however I couldn't find anything during my research and was looking for some help.
I'm looking for a way to port Android Wear 2.0 to an Android device or development board.
My end goal is to try and create a custom smartwatch like device that runs Android Wear 2.0 and use a development board or an inexpensive Android device (like Blu phones) as a prototype. I have found many development boards that run Android (like the UDOO NEO FULL) but haven't been able to get Android Wear onto it.
Does anyone know of any development boards that comes with Android wear on it or know of a way to port Android Wear to it or a Blu phone?
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
