I have been pulling out my hair trying to figure out how to make this work. Microsoft's Bluetooth stack is horrible.
It is very easy to stream bluetooth audio from a Windows PC to the Echo Dot. It seems to be impossible to stream the Dot to Windows. I would like Alexa's voice to come out of my sound bar along with audio from my media center PC.
I started with a bluetooth dongle with a Toshiba chip. The Toshiba stack didn't work.
Then I tried Broadcom with Windows drivers. Nothing. With the WIDCOMM stack I was able to get Windows to show the control screen and theoretically connect, but didn't hear any audio. Alexa seemed to be broadcasting to nowhere. I was able to send bluetooth audio from my phone to the computer.
I tried a CSR dongle with CSR drivers. These had an issue saying I was unregistered. I tried with Blue Soleil and couldn't get that to work either.
A few people on Reddit claim to have this working, but there seems to be no guide. Is this possible?
Also, streaming to a bluetooth a2dp receiver doesn't work because audio input on Windows comes with tons of electrical noise. I wish this were a good solution.

I installed this stack from the o2 mini (magician), http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33532 , and gave me other options in the bluetooth settings such as printer, file transfer, and audio. So far everything works like normal such receiving objects and using a bluetooth headset for calls, but i don't have a stereo headset to see if the audio part works for the media. I tried searching to see if anyone else tried this but no results.
if you haven't already noticed, the audio level on your unit will go to minimum, and even when you move the slider up, you may get no sound from the speakers.
also windows media player won't work properly.
I want to know if it is possible to forward all Pc audio over bluetooth to the phone?
Basically I want to use the phone as a wireless audio link so I can walk around the house with access to my music on the pc. Also in the future, may want to set up the carpc in the same way.
Any info on this? The forum/google search picks up phone->other devices... never pc->phone.

This may not be possible... unless I've gotten hold of completely the wrong end of the stick (which I hope I have), the range of the bluetooth on the pda is EXTREMELY short.. I understand that when streaming to bt headphones people are happy about getting a 50 cm range.
EDIT... actually the bluetooth on the BA is supposed to be a class 2 device which according to specs is supposed to have a 5-10 m range... so I ammend my above statement by saying I'm not really sure.
Can someone confirm either way please.

Pardon me, my 'house' is a 1 bedroom tiny apt. A 5-10 m range would more than suffice.
I've heard of bluetooth wireless headphones from logitech... these have a 33 ft range

As long as it's line of sight you should have no problems at all.. as for the range of the headphones.. it all comes down to the range of the pda.. which isn't very good. It turns out that the range of a bt network is better.. so the problem seems to lie with the audio gateway stacks. (which is a big problem)
I don't think you'll be able to do it without a lot of work, (or maybe some 3rd party software) The first approach would be to use the bluetooth headset profile. But neither your phone or your pc has a headset profile. They proably both have audio gateways that can "support bluetooth headset profile" That is, they both want to play the role of the computer, and neither can play the role of the headset. Also, the audio would be narrow band and mono so it wouldn't sound that great.
You would want to have the advance audio distribution bluetooth profile. In order for it to work, one device would have to be the audio source and the other the audio sink. I suspect that neither supports this profile, but perhaps they do. Some newer phones do support it, and many usb dongles for PC's come with profile drivers, but even if you have both I suspect that both will be set up to to be the audio source. (windows before XP service pack 1 didn't support bluetooth at all)

Thanks I was worried about that... It doesn't seem that anyone has thought of this way of using BT and I doubt that there is software to do it out there. I may fiddle around with it later on... but maybe one of those bt headsets would be just fine!

Maybe it is not the solution you are looking for, but why don't you consider using WiFi instead. It's easier to configure, better sound quality, and you can setup as Ad-Hoc if you do not use WiFi AP.
I am doing this in the house and the media pc in my car. It works out just great.

Any wifi card from Circuit City / Best Buy will do. All you do is set up an ad-hoc network, install Orb to your PC and you'll be able to browse your media collection on your phone while you walk around. If you're just gonna be in your house/apartment and wanna stream music to your stereo bluetooth headphones, you could just pick up the Motorola DC800 which I've been raving about since day one. I can stream music from my laptop to my headphones and it sounds great no matter what floor of my house I'm in.. the only downside is that I have to create a playlist before I leave my laptop because you can't control what you listen to from the headphones unless you use your phone and Pocket Player with the WM plugin. Hope that helps!

i installed vlc 0.8.6c, set it up to stream my desktop's audio output
then on my elf, i use my music player(TCPMP) to load the url
through wifi (got ~10s lag/delay ba, or rather 20-25sec)
so for bluetooth, once u can setup ur handphone to ping ur desktop

The title says it all. I am looking for a way to turn my PPC into an USB sound card, but I don't want to use BT for it as that is reserved for my stereo headset. The audio would have to go
PC Audio --> PPC --> BT or wired headset
I've seen software going the other way round, turning the PPC into a webcam for the PC. This worked also over (wireless) networks and the internet and I wonder if this would be possible for the above solution, too.

ORB is a streaming solution to playback your media library over the internet on devices ranging from smartphones to the Wii. It's a nice solution, but not what I am looking for. I am rather searching for a tool that turns my PPC into a soundcard that processes the audio from the PC it's attached to.
pretty crazy idea but i could defintely see the use, mostly all computers nowadays come w built in sound cards so don't really see the point there, techncially it is possible the hardware is all there to allow it just the software side is needed.
I think this would be a two step solution, a client running on the phone to allow the audio input from the pc, and new usb drivers for windows to recognize it as a sound card, unless a client can be also tooled to do that

Well, if all you're looking for is to use BT Headphones, you can get a small bluetooth dongle for only a few bucks.
@dasilva333: Yes, the solution would pretty much have to look like that. Ateksoft's WebCamPlus follows exactly this kind of client / driver implementation to turn the PPC into a webcam + microphone for the PC and the reverse approach should be possible.
@met3ora: I have a BT headset and dongle and it works fine. Unfortunately I can't couple the headphones with both my PC and PPC at the same time. Turning the PPC into a sound card would elegantly solve this problem. I know that this might be a bit too special, but as there are many niche solutions out (t)here I figured it might be worth it to ask
Motorola bluetooth headphones work perfectly while listening to music but not while trying to play a movie in Netflix app. The audio is heard through the external speaker. any ideas?

I guess it's an app problem. May be Netflix needs to send the output to the default audio output device instead of the (hardcoded) speakers?
I use a mac and had the same problem. So I used the Line In app for mac and Sound Flower.
Once Soundflower is installed, go into the mac sound settings, and change output to Soundflower (2ch) or (16ch). Whichever you want
Turn on the Line In app, and divert the Soundflower channel to the Bluetooth headset.
The sound quality is crap, but it's a work around if you need it. Also, my headset turned off a few times after about 15 mins of use. Guessing the mac or headset is recognizing a signal since it's kinda sent sneakily. So it probably registers as idle.
What does a MAC's BT issue have anything to do with Windwos phone's problem?
BTW, I did some testing. Even with NoDo update, using the built in Zune Video player, I can't send the audio via A2DP to a BT headset. So, it seems the limitation is inside WP7 OS. There is NO A2DP support for any video players.

I tried with PowerAmp's feature called "Route Output" and even I set the option to my bluetooth speakers (I have the MXBT chinese bluetooth speakers).
Things that worked over bluetooth:
pair and connect to any bt device and my laptop
send file to my phone from ubuntu

So, answering my own post, I've been reading around and testing a bit...
I tried yesterday Mono Bluetooth Router (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maxistar.monobluetoothfree) and it surprisingly works, streaming PowerAmp to my nokia hands-free earpiece.
Does anyone know what is this CyanogenMod using as a BT driver? BlueZ or BroadComm's stack?
I read that these guys are porting BlueZ to Android 4.2, it would be nice to have this software back!
