Forget about the Z2, wait and see what the OnePlus (AKA the first Cyanogenmod partnership with hardware) has to offer
Former Oppo engineers + CM = awesome
The only reason to get a Samsung is the incomparable SAMOLED.

I'm pretty sure the boot loader is LOCKED on AT&T or any other US Carrier, aside from a TBA release of the Verizon Developer Version of the S5. He asked about the Bootloader, not the SIM card slot. The international version, apparently has an unlocked boot loader (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) but will only work at HSPA+ speeds assuming your nearby network supports the speed, otherwise you'll be getting standard 3G speeds and I know for a fact that there's a huge difference. I own the Nexus 5, Moto G, and LG G2 (AT&T) and the Moto G is only 3G. It gets excellent reception when I pop the SIM card in it, but it's definitely sluggish (most notably with web apps, cloud sync, and interruptions in streaming music from Google Music).
I would buy the S5 Unlocked Bootloader in a SECOND if it's hardware supported domestic (USA) LTE bands for AT&T.
**Does anyone know if there is even a variant on earth right now that you can unlock the boot loader on, that also is fully compatible with AT&T speeds?**
Because if not, I'm probably going to get the Moto X gsm dev edition today before midnight (big sale) or the HTC One M8 if I can get my hands on a Google Play Edition, but they've been out of inventory on Google Play every time I check. I simply want the S5 that is unlockable because it has a user replaceable battery, which means adding an extended battery. It also has a microSD card slot that allows you to use up to a 128GB micro-SD card. Honestly, how much better than that does it need to get? Oh yeah, an unlocked bootloader so we can workaround SD-card limitations KitKat has introduced - the details of which I am not fully aware of yet.
Thanks for anyone that responds that can link me to a reputable source to confirm...that or a fellow dev&member on XDA that clearly knows their stuff.
Cheers,
Justin

are you sure? someone please confirm.
It is confirmed that the T-Mobile S5 is bootloader unlocked and can work on ATT network and get ALL frequency bands that ATT uses. Just check out the T-Mobile S5 Subforums.
They already have root, recovery via TWRP or some others, just not a lot of Roms yet. I follow the T-Mobile and ATT forums in case I upgrade from my S4.

I can also confirm that T-Mobile's bootloader is unlocked. I have a T-Mobile S5, which I have rooted and installed TWRP and am running AllianceRom (from the international forum, so you are not limited to the roms in the T-Mobile S5 forum).
I actually also have sim unlocked the phone and am using Straight Talk (AT&T) service. I get full AT&T speeds, including LTE.
Questions about S5, will soon be passing on LG-G2, as awesome as it is.

Thanks for answering guys! I do have another question. I've been looking on swappa.com and even T-Mobile's website and I've yet to see a 32GB version of their S5. Since it has yet to be released, I wonder if it will have a locked bootloader when it is released, does anyone know when the 32GB version is supposed to be on sale? I assume it will ship with 4.4.3 or something. I did not end up getting the Moto X, so it's going to either be the M8 or the S5 and I just saw an article on the internet that the S5 GPe was put onto the play store and pulled very quickly sometime last week. M8 has 32GB, but no user-replaceable battery. S5 has 16 GB but can replace the user battery. I suppose with a fast and large enough microSD card, you wouldn't experience noticeable lag if you used your microSD card to store everything aside from commonly used/accessed apps/data.
Can I just go to a T-Mobile store or online and purchase an S5 outright? Given that it has an unlocked bootloader? I heard that some one people got the Verizon or Sprint version and they were able to use on the ATT network (apparently some of them are unlocked) but apparently having gotten the Verizon version means they can't use T-Mobile ROMs. How much different is the hardware? I feel silly for asking this question because I'm pretty confident I know the answer but it's a lot of money to shell out: doesn't unlocking the bootloader mean you can literally install almost any type of OS or ROM or Kernel to your device? Assuming you can support it yourself or the community has created ROMs that support it?
Last question of the least importance: Anyone running a hybrid HTC Sense from the M8 on their S5? I know there aren't many T-Mobile ROMs for the S5 yet, but I figure this is the best place to ask them since you guys really know what you're talking about.
Thanks everyone! If I DO come across the answers to my own questions, I'll post them myself.

BTW! if anyone wants to buy an AT&T LG-G2, I have one in perfect condition that is sparingly used. I'm not going to post on swappa.com until I know for sure what device I'll be buying. However, I am willing to make a listing for anyone that truly wants an LG-G2 so we can make the transaction and I can ship the LG-G2 immediately after everything goes through.

The Galaxy Note Edge still to this day does not have Root. I was wondering if it was worth it getting the Note 7 from At&t or should I get an unlocked one. What do you guys think?
I had the At&t Note 4 as well, which also never got root. I recently sold mine for over $200 on eBay and I found a T-Mobile Note 3 that I rooted and ROM'd and it is nearly as fast as the Note 5. I've already pre-ordered the Note 7 through At&t only because I've used the S7 Edge and it is fast enough to not really need root. But to be fair the S7 and S7 Edge do have root so it may be possible for the Note 7 to be rooted in a similar fashion. Now the bootloader is a whole nother story!

It seems to really depend on the popularity of the phone, whether it gets root or not. The Note 4 Edge was a great phone, but was not that popular with the general public. With all the excitement generated for the Note 7, I think we will get root. I do really wish they had put the snapdragon 821 & 6GB of ram, like the rumors had said. Then it really would of been an iphone killer. Btw, I also Pre-ordered a Note 7.

I'm gonna also pre-order and I have AT&T. But I'm gonna go to best buy and out right buy the unlocked no plan version. AT&T can kiss my rear end, if it weren't for my wife not wanting to leave them I would have dumped them way back when bootloader got locked.

Dont buy it from best buy, they upcharge. They wont carry a sim unlocked one anyways. Buy on amazon. For me as much as I used to like sammy I cant deal with locked bootloaders and the price tag is too high. If anything id consider a international exynos model s7 from amazon. Theres at least stable root and development.

Good advise, I went to best buy and asked if they were taking pre-orders for the unlocked version. She looked at me like I was talking some alien language. Gave me a weird expression and walked away.
You shouldn't support ANY carriers - including AT&T.
Buy unlocked and do what you want with YOUR device!

N930F (Europe); N930G (India)
I think both of these models come unlocked and I think there are also dual sim variants that come unlocked as well. Not sure.
I always go for the F variant - N930F - which is usually the international unlocked version.
Yes, it should be possible to unlock the bootloader and root - at least it was on the S7 Edge I used to own.
Keep in mind, the international model uses the Exynos processor as opposed to the SD820 the US version uses.
They both have pros and cons - do your research before you purchase. Especially if you are planning to root, use Samsung Pay etc...
I prefer international for less bloat/carrier restrictions, better battery life, root etc...
P.S. -> if you root then no Samsung Pay

Don't the unlocked phones use different frequencies/channels compare to US carriers and might not get full potential of US LTE network?
Even between US carriers the frequencies/channels are different. For example my Note 3 T-mob doesn't use some channels that Att uses and I can't get full LTE speeds on ATT network because of that.

I live in Australia and I'm seriously considering buying this phone. The version sold here is the H990DS, I've seen around that the dual sim version is worse for rooting for some reason??? Also I know that the T-Mobile variant in the US has root, and it's not looking too well for the other US variants, so do you guys think the H990 has any hope for root in the future? I'd consider buying the T-Mobile version simply because it already has root and the development for it looks like it's really picking up, however it's not really compatible with the bands here in Australia. Don't international versions usually have an unlocked bootloader etc? I'm just trying to read up and understand as much as I can before I make a decision for buying this phone or not, I'm really into rooting and custom roms and stuff, been having fun with my Samsung S4 for years and I really don't want to give that up. The other phone that i was considering was the S7 Edge, which is more clearcut as to if it has root or not.
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out, first time posting on xda
looking at v20 and am also in au
Did you have any luck with v20 ,as it seems to be best overall in specs usability otg band just seems to be issues of root for h990ds and I am a noob.
Hello all!
On T-Mobile Simple Choice plan in the US. LG V20 US996 64GB model. Android 7.0.
(I have multiple screenshots to share but XDA says I need to have 10 posts before sharing links. I have another thread up on /r/LGV20 with a link to some images)
Recently purchased the US996 model off Amazon to replace my defective Nexus 6P. I read on LG's site that it should support bands 2, 4 and 12 which T-Mobile uses. So far, I love the camera, performance and battery life. Aside from that, I am having some network issues.
1. Device always stays connected to Band 4 AWS1. Not connected to bands 2 and 12.
2. LTE coverage overall is sporadic. usually stays on 4G HSPA+ (doesn't show LTE in top-right next to cell reception meter, though it does show LTE in Network Cell Info app).
3. Wi-Fi calling/VoLTE is not working.
Has anyone else reported these issues? Do I need to flash the T-Mobile H918 firmware?
---------------------------
unrelated question
4. I'm still on 7.0, has 7.1.2 been released for the V20?
Thanks all
7.1.2 hasnt been released on stock for any device. however android 7.1.2 is running on emotion os

I had similar issues with the unlocked US version of the LG G5 (RS988). Even though it is listed as having band 12, I was unable to get it to connect to band 12 on T-Mobile. When I was in 'Extended LTE' (band 12-only) areas, I would be roaming while a T-Mobile Galaxy S7 would have a full T-Mobile LTE signal. In the network settings, the phone wouldn't even see the T-Mobile LTE RAT.
I think it likely that T-Mobile or LG were preventing a band 12 connection due to a lack of VOLTE certification. T-Mobile has required manufacturers to disable band 12 on other unlocked phones that did not have VOLTE certification in the past. I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same with this model.
New question. Can I flash my phone with the H918 (T-Mobile's version) firmware?

Nope, you'll end up with a brick. The H918 has a different firmware key than any of the other models, so flashing h918 firmware onto anything else results in a brick, and an h918 flashing any other model firmware results in a brick.
You could try flashing the US Cellular US996 firmware though, and see if it makes a difference. The USC firmware is very much cross-flashable on the unlocked US996 (as far as I know, a lot of people crossflash for the security updates as the unlocked model is behind by quite a bit).
https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/development/rom-us99610k-stock-rom-twrp-flashable-t3691784
Well at this point I think I'll just sell this US996 and buy an H918.
Looking at Swappa prices I could probably practically get two H918's for this thing. It's practically Mint and has a 10kWH ZeroLemon battery and case. Only thing I'm not sure about is the message that pops up when you start it warning that the bootloader is unlocked... is that bad or a desired feature?

Scratch that question... -- I'm guessing most would want it unlocked to put root/roms on it.
I'm looking into a G6 for my next phone for us on Cricket Wireless (AT&T mvno). Can anybody weigh in as to whether I should go with the AT&T H871, or the unlocked US997? Any specific advantages or disadvantages to either? Thanks in advance for your opinions!
Get the unlocked version that way you'll be able to get on custom roms with Android 9 when it's released next fall. No advantage to getting the at&t locked version unless it's significant price difference
