Depends on the kernel. Read the guide of the kernel developer.

Just flash. All custom ROMs have root.
Btw, you need a custom recovery to flash a ROM (like TWRP, CWM)

Not necessarily. You can flash a custom recovery through Odin and not root it at all and then just install a already rooted ROM.

CWM is always reliable. Some prefer TWRP. I'm using Philz Touch. It depends on your preferences. CWM is the most stable.
The title is basically my question, but to elaborate: Do I need to do an initial process before flashing a custom ROM or does flashing a custom ROM form part of rooting?
you need root to flash a custom rom.
you can say root is only a doorway to customization.

Incorrect. You don't need root to flash a custom rom.
You need a custom recovery to flash rom. You don't need root for that.

Yes it is, but you will lose your warranty anyway, it's not important if you got root or not

Root is not necessary as many custom rom come with pre-rooted.
The sequence should be:
1- Flash a RECOVERY
2- Flash a CUSTOM ROM
3- ROOT my phone (optional, depending on ROM)
4- and lastly Flash a KERNEL

THANK YOU! This helps a lot..
Ahmm can I ask one more question..
Is it okay if ill replace the kernel of a custom rom into a different kernel?
Ex. I have this ROM(gummyrom) which has it's own Kernel, then i downloaded 'Lean Kernel' is it okay just to replace the kernel of 'GummyRom' into 'Lean Kernel'?

Sorry I cannot answer to this question.
You should consult in the supporting thread of the specific rom/kernel.

Alright, thanks tho!
I'm currently on Franco Kernel but want to change to ElementalX kernel.
I've read that you can't just install the new kernel over the old kernel is that true?
Will I need to do wipe my device in order to install?
It's recommended to dirty flash stock or your rom, depending on what you use. No need to wipe anything.
Regards,

Flash a stock boot.img (which is the stock kernel) first then flash SuperSU if you want root, then flash elemental.
What About no-verity-opt-encrypt ???
What exactly are you asking?

I believe some custom roms require flashing that, but I just rooted and installed twrp.
If flashing SupermanRom, then you need to install no_verity_opt_encrypt before flashing ROM.

Not really. It was just required for kernels with non disabled encryption but eventually it was integrated into SuperSU and now with sources we have non encrypted kernels. And why before flashing the rom?

You don't need it anymore, as we have kernel sources and You can download any rom and it will be working without encryption.

If it's not a custom rom then yes you will need to flash no verity zip unless you plan to root in which you can flash supersu which includes no verity.
