Hi and thanks for responding.
I'm having a strange issue with the fingerprint sensor that I cannot figure out. I have a Verizon S8+ that is active on my AT&T account. Everything works fine except I cannot unlock the phone with the fingerprint sensor. The really odd thing is if I insert my a Verizon SIM card into the phone then the fingerprint sensor works perfectly. Taking out the SIM, insert the AT&T, the phone reboots as it should. However, the fingerprint stops working if I try to unlock it.
It works fine if I enable to use it to swipe down the notification shade; however, I always keep that turned off. I have tried wiping cache, deleting the fingerprint and adding it again, but no luck. It will only work when inserting the Verizon sim card.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I setup my brand new moto G4 Plus (xt1644) with fingerprint + pattern security. Usually the fingerprint unlocks it, but every once in awhile it requires a pattern instead. I know for sure that the pattern is required when powering up or rebooting, but what are the other occasions? Thanks

After a reboot and when many wrong fingerprints are registered, it will ask for the pattern.

Thanks. Are those the only occasions?
I think there is some bug. At times my phone denies to identify fingerprints and asks for pattern directly like I've restarted my phone

Interestingly, before I wrote the question, there were frequent occasions that it asked for fingerprint, but afterwards it hasn't once asked for fingerprint except after power on/reboot. No idea why the change!

Maybe some bug in Nougat. Maybe faulty hardware. Moto service sucks here at my place too
Was happy with my lg g4 :-/
So, I'm looking around, but all searches are leading me to people who want something completely different.
I'd like to use my fingerprint to unlock apps like Gpay or ADP mobile, but do not want to unlock my phone using a fingerprint, just a PIN. The issue being that, if I remove the fingerprint option from lock screen, my fingerprint is wiped entirely.
Is there a mod out there that allows this? Or am I just stuck deciding between convinience and security?
I really like the idea of that ....I'd interested in that
I've never heard of a mod that does what you want. Android links fingerprint usage in apps to the setup in the lockscreen. I'm not sure how entering a pin is more convenient than using a fingerprint but if your phone is locked can't you always enter the pin instead of a fingerprint anyway? When you set up the pin and fingerprint Android forces you to use the pin at first boot but I don't think it ever forces you to use your fingerprint. When mine is locked and shows a fingerprint prompt if I touch the screen the keyboard pops up so the pin can be entered instead. Forcing you to use the fingerprint to unlock wouldn't make sense because if the fingerprint sensor stopped working you would be permanently locked out of your phone.
You misunderstand the purpose of what I'm asking. I can be legally compelled to provide a fingerprint to unlock my phone, but not a pin. If my phone doesn't unlock via fingerprint, this is not an issue.
So no, it isn't convinient to unlock via PIN, but it is secure.
I still want to use the fingerprint sensor for LastPass, ADP, Gpay, etc.
Would love the same, hate that they are connected. I do not need a lock screen but the convenience for apps would be nice.

Just remember on rebooting, the phone requires a PIN.
So if compelled, make sure you hit the power button and reboot the phone.
Anyone using pie notice that face unlock doesn't work anymore? Phone now defaults to fingerprint unlock. It used to give the option for face or fingerprint.
Tried using improve face matching, but that will get it to work for a bit then goes back to fingerprint only. Same with switching face unlock off then back on. Anyone with a solution to this?

I am having the same issue
Mine is working. I just got my phone so I don't know what the process was before pie. But I have to wake the screen then it sees my face then I have to swipe to open. Kind of inconvenient.

I got mine working again by
settings-> Apps->Trusted Face->Storage->Clear Storage
then went to the face unlock settings and removed and re added my face.

Didn't really stick. It'd work for a min or two then revert back to fingerprint. Thanks for the help though.

Check that...it looks to be working again. But it's inconsistent. Sometimes when I press the power button, the fingerprint image shows; other times, the face image shows. Definitely a bug that they should try to sort out.
Since day one with my 6T, I have had an issue with Google Pay. When making a purchase using Google Pay, my first attempt requires me to enter a pin or scan my fingerprint (even if I unlock my phone prior to tapping to pay). When I scan my fingerprint or enter my pin, Google Pay tells me there was an error and I need to get again. When I tap to pay again, it goes through without a problem.
I have read that smart unlock may cause this issue so I disabled that but it didn't work.
I tried rebooting in safe mode but that didn't help.
Not rooted. Bootloader still locked. I did convert from T-Mobile to international and the issue persists.
I would appreciate any help. It is very annoying.

Yes, I have tried that. It doesn't work. Thanks for the suggestion.
Do you have face unlock set up?
Google Pay doesn't work for me if my phone unlocked with my face. PIN or Print to unlock and it goes through first time.

I believe this is desires functionality. The face unlock is way more insecure than fingerprint. If you unlock with fingerprint, it won't ask you in Google Pay.
I have face unlock enabled for swiping up (uncheck automatically unlock I think is the name) and then have fingerprint on as well. When going to a cashier, I unlock with FP everywhere else I unlock with face unlock.

Yup. I think that's a good thing and glad it works that way.

Just to follow up... I finally did a factory reset and now Google pay works as intended. Unlocking with my fingerprint allows me to use Pay but unlocking with my face requires a second authentication. Thanks to anyone who contributed to helping.
Is anyone else having issues with smart lock? I have my phone set to unlock with my fingerprints which works perfect, and I also have smart lock set to keep my phone unlocked at home. The problem is at least half of the time when I am at home I have to use my fingerprints to unlock my phone.
Anyone else having this issue?
I always had this issue with smart lock. Give Bixby routines a try instead. It's been much more reliable when doing things based on location.

It's Smart Lock issue itself, not device specific. It literally never worked on my HTC 10, was spotty on HTC U11 and Tab S3, and is still spotty on S10+.
Google attempted to fix location problem in SL couple times already (they even disabled Trusted Places for short time) but to no avail.
