Is there an option or setting in chrome or 4.2.2 that can turn off the popup and allow you to view the play store using chrome? Right now if you click a link going to a page on the play store, a popup displaying your browser and play store apps asking which to open it with. The final option is "always" or "just once", but it only works on the specific link and not the entire domain.
I would like to use the play store from my browser since it appears there are more options available, more info on apps, more search/device options and you can see ALL the apps, not just the ones for your device. I am sure there may be tricks to do these things and more in the play store, but it would be much simpler to just be able to view it with chrome without that darned popup at each link.
Hopefully it is just something simple I am overlooking. Thanks for any help on this one!
Maybe if you clear deafaults on Google Play, it will stop asking which app to use? Installed a couple games through Chrome (on Galaxy Nexus) without getting any popup asking which app to use.
Often ROM's instruct you to install the gapps package (http://goo.im/gapps ), which adds a collection of Google Apps. I'm often surprised that more people don't know, even sometimes Rom Developers themselves, that you don't always need them.
In fact not installing them, saves not only space, but ram & cpu usage. You end up with a faster device. Everything you need is already added in almost every standard Rom (including Chameleon OS for example).
For example, checking Gmail. You don't need Gmail App. The normal e-mail program that comes with Android already supports Gmail (and other e-mail providers).
You also don't need Google Search. The stock browser already uses it when you search. You save about 20 MB Ram (sometimes more, depending on which Rom you use), by not having Search on the desktop.
About the only con (drawback) is if you're flashing a phone, you're going to want or need gapps as that includes the voice commands (if I recall correctly). But if that's something you feel you can live without or don't need (because you have a tablet or maybe you don't use them on your phone), then not installing gapps can make things easier.
So do you install gapps (Google Apps)?
Actually, for some custom roms, in order for all the features to work, you need to flash Gapps. But for most you dont need. I have never had any bad things from flashing or not flahsing. But i always do flash so i can sync my purchases and apps.
I never flash the Gapps packages for any ROM I use. I only will add the Google Play Store, Google Services Framework and the Account Manager (for JB). All those Google apps are pointless and like stated earlier, will bog down the battery life and performance. Usually I will freeze the Play Store and such when not using them.
Its quite easy to put the required apps in the /system/app folder, set permissions correctly and reboot to get ONLY the Google Play Store. Of course you will need a root explorer like app to do this.

Every ROM I've ever used had Google Play already installed. I believe Framework and Account Manager are already inside as well. So I've not needed to track down the actual app for it.

Sometimes I'll get lucky and the Play Store is preloaded like SBlood's CM7. I usually use twa_priv's ROMs as my primaries in which I most always have to add Google Play, except I think the latest release (4-19-13), I believe that had it built in.

I think some of you have misunderstood the Gapps.
AFAIK, every AOSP-based ROM will have separate Gapps. Some REQUIRED, some not. You can choose to install or not. NOTE: if you won't install Gapps, you WON'T get Google Play.
Or connection to google services. If you do not flash Google Apps, you get nothing google (beside the software) so your wifi signal, will always be grey, instead of that nice blue. Thats the reason why i flash, that grey bugs me, I only want the blue colour(;

That's not true or at least its not try with the ROMs I use. Google's app store is there without me having to add all the extras that come with Gapps

Also not true. I have a nice Wifi signal without Gapps. I also connect to my Gmail using the stock e-mail problem.
This was posted using the stock browser without gapps installed.
Well, seeing this thread, I've tried freezing several system apps on my devices. After freezing backupconfirm and sharebackup, apps seems to open up faster and the device snappier..
I used to install gapps every time, now I usually dont. I like the email app in JB a lot better than the gmail app. Usually install the play store and maps
I like the maps and play store hate the gmail
I find that installing gapps, especially Google play services causes more bugs

hey guys, thanks for this post i was under the impression I HAD NO OTHER CHOICE...every time i have asked this in a specific rom ...always told to read the beginning of the 1st post on how to install before i post.....maybe wasnt making myself clear..thanks for answering my question...time to experiment !!!!!!!! :good::good::good::good:
Does anyone know exactly what Google flavored apps are required for the just the Play Store to function properly?

I install gapps everytime because I am always getting new apps. It is interesting to hear that it isn't needed and can make things snappier if you don't need to download new apps.

Hi All,
Now that most people have installed the OTA KitKat and knowing that this will be the last update Motorola makes for our phones, I thought it would be a good idea to make a collection of all the system bloatware that came with the OTA that is able to be removed safely without affecting the performance or running of the phone (either frozen or deleted for those of us lucky enough to be unlocked and already rooted). Lord knows I have been waiting a long long time to delete these apps and not just have them frozen! I'll keep a running list in the second post, hopefully in alphabetical order, as people post up any that I have forgotten about or didn't think of.
Again, this is just a list of everything that is safe to remove if people don't use the apps / functions, not necessarily things that have to be removed.
...there's nothing like freeing up memory and RAM 8)
EDIT: The hard ones to pick out are gonna be all the "com.***" ones since they're not quite as self-explanatory...

Like I said, they are removable but some people will want to keep them. Personally I keep the YouTube, but use a scientific calculator app and don't use live wallpaper.
Ah I see, I didn't think those were removable. I thought they were system apps.
You're right, they are system apps, but can be frozen and for those of us lucky enough to be unlocked and rooted on KK they can be deleted (using TiBu or some other method). Everything listed above is considered a "system app". But, the list is not comprehensive.
That's why I was looking for input for some of the more not-as-obviously-named removable apps. I know there was a list floating around somewhere, I had a bunch of stuff frozen from that list whilst on JB. But now that our phones are not going to be updated any further (and if there is a surprise update that comes to us, we can put the phones back to "stock" using SamuriHL's RSD Lite scripts), I'd like to delete them permanently.
Just an update - I was able to safely remove the all-important NFL Mobile app without hardbricking
Guys, I'm sorry to crash this thread, I'm locked and on 9.18.64. Since your all rooted and unlocked, I was wondering if anyone of you would be willing to give SamuriHl a freshly installed and rooted system dump using the safestrap method he outlines in the KitKat root tracking thread? I'd like to be a guinea pig for this one chance root experiment. That's the only missing piece ATM.

Freeze bloatware
K, I was able to freeze the bloatware using my unrooted 4.4.2.
I went into each apps settings (long press the icon, app info). Then I cleared the "Show notifications" check, Force stop, then Disable. After that the offending apps weren't showing up under the app screen.
If you go to Play store, you'll find them listed as "Disabled".
Hope this helps some, and keep up the good fight for Root access with this update.

Sigh... Please don't spam this thread with posts about root on stock KK. If you don't have it by now, get used to not having it on this phone EVER.
I have removed and disabled the google search app without any negative issues to the rom.
I don't use it as I find myself using my personal browser more than the useless google app. Plus no google now push. However, it does remove the search bar, but doesn't break the roms ability to search from an up swipe from the dock using a browser with search functions, or another search app.
You can also freeze google maps along with its companion app without issue.
You should also consider putting a list of apps not to mess with this time around. This is because a few system apps have become more vital in the rom.
For instance, Google Play Services was able to be disabled and removed without reinstalling automatically in Jelly Bean, but it can no longer be frozen or deleted as it will seriously mess up the google play store with it's recent update in kitkat.

Haha. How do you like your crow prepared? Despite the fact that root and unlock is now available again for a short time, anyway, I think he was showing how there is some freeze ability without root with this update.
With that said, I can't find acoustic warning in tibu, is it now called something else? I can't stand the auto volume drop when I hook to my truck radio.
Update: nvm. Its no longer standalone. Its in android os. You have to use xposed to disable it.
Something I killed in this list removed my speech to text capability. The microphone icon is gone from the keyboard when texting. Any idea what did it?

If I had to guess, I'd say it was removing Google search that did the trick. That's when mine disappeared anyway. I rarely use the option so it didn't bother me too much. If you haven't uninstalled Google search, then you should just be able to verify Google voice typing is enabled. If that doesn't do it, you might also have to long press the button to the left of the space bar and assign the mic to that key.

OK, I'll bite. It seems I'm only able to freeze bloatware. I try uninstalling w/ TBU, but they're all still there. Since I don't see any reason to have to restore them for an OTA, I'd just like to get rid of them.

Hello inwisso,
Thanks for your Great tutorial and for the workaround to get the Google Play Store working on the Fire Phones !
However I have noticed that if I install the "Google Play Service" from the 3er link:
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...ices-8-1-14-2244331-030-android-apk-download/
Although the newest APPs from Google, like:
YouTube v10.37.58
Google-Drive v2.3.283.31.34
Are now working flawlessly, some streaming APPs stopped working, and also sometime the FireTV freezes and also Crashes...
Apparently the version of "Google Play Services" of the 3rd link, is affecting in some way the smooth work and the normal functionality of the FireTV units ... Use with caution !
So, I was forced to use only the 4 Google APPs from the 1st link, and I have decided not to update the "Google Play Service" to a newer version:
https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=73036323a69e3cf1&id=73036323A69E3CF1!1484&authkey=!AIVXLFXAOWDeM0Q
Does Anyone here has experienced the same strange behaviors on their FireTV, or has tested any of the following latest versions:
Google Play Store_5.9.12 Released September 15, 2015)
Google Play services_8.1.15 (Released September 15, 2015)
Google Play services 8.1.18 (Released September 26, 2015)
Thanks, if you guys find a better performing "google play services" version I can update the link.
Are you using fire tv or fire tv stick ?
Inwisso, I'll try to test various versions of the "Google Play Services" APP, and let you know what works best ...
However, as the new YouTube and Google-Drive APPs requires the latest version of "Google Play Services ", I doubt that these two are going to work.

For YouTube viewing there's always the "YouTube for Android TV" app.
Can't login, but it works well enough, I find v1.0.5.5 works best as the latest v1.1.16 crashes on the Fire TV Stick.
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/youtube-for-android-tv/youtube-1-0-5-5-android-apk-download/
As I said before, it is that apps like YouTube and Google Drive, that have been updated most recently, all need to run the latest version of "Google Play Service," but unfortunately when installed then affects others FireTV APPs, that worked well before.
Hopefully with the NEW upcoming FireOS -5 "Bellini", that will be released in October 5 to all the FireTV Models, and that is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop (API level 22), we could then have more compatibility with all newer APPs.

https://developer.amazon.com/public...re-tv/docs/device-and-platform-specifications
Who knows, maybe we could also install some new APPs Exclusive for Android-TV and launchers, as the "Android-TV Leanback Launcher":
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.leanbacklauncher
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...-launcher-1-1-2-1994870-android-apk-download/
So then we have to wait to October 5, to see what it is and how this FireOS-5 "Bellini" works.
I really hope Amazon has been able to do an excellent job with this new version of the FireOS-5, and that they will come with some new things and fixes !!

Yes I have similar issues. I have Fire TV BOX and I just side load connecting the box to my PC over Ethernet. No problems there I can get the files over.
The problem is that some programs work fine with Google Chrome to browse the web which is really cool...
but.....
On a lot of apps like "Vice" / Viceland TV, it boots up then says something like "your version of Google Play Services is not compatible please uninstall it" So anyway I can get the latest Google Play Services .apk but look there are 28 VARIANTS! http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-services/google-play-services-9-8-77-release/
How do I know which variant I have on my FireTV BOX of Android that the Amazon front end is running on?
Is there just a simple Google Play Store and Google Play Services I can download once and it will auto-update?
Thanks
I have tried with no success installing Google Play services and Google Play store on my FireTV BOX.
FireTV BOX version Fire OS 5.2.1.1 and I have no problem getting the apk's to my device by side-loading over Ethernet using adbLink and adbLink works find for all other app, so it must be either I need to be rooted or I have the wrong Google Play Store and Google Play Service .apk's
Can anyone help me one this with my FireTV BOX version to get Google Play Services and Google Play store on my device so I can run apps which require Google Play Services?
Thanks
I wonder have any of you ever thought to disable the "Not In My Home" (com.amazon.tv.nimh.apk) service? I gather it's a fairly new (Firmware 5.2.1.1), thing. In case you haven't worked out what this does it basically blocks (from Amazon's POV), unwanted Apps.
Now I'll confess to not having bothered to do my Homework in this, myself. There seems to be little hope that this is the one thing keeping Google Play Services, and by proxy the PlayStore off the Fire TV2, but I haven't seen anything that dismisses it either.
But, the idea that One could in theory, at least side load the Leanback Frameworks onto such a Device, has at least given me some hope that I might be able to get it working on some Chinese Box. One of these days.
I suppose, a better question to ask here, considering I still a noob to this AFTV2 Box; Would be did either of Google's Services / PlayStore, even ever work on the AFTV2?
someone has managed to fix it? i had an apk called mega tv player runing perfect until yesterday that my fire stick was factory reseted by mistake, now i can't load the app or any other apk that ask for google play services.
MOD EDIT - Removed has older apks of apps if you need them (currently a reliable site, but don't blame me once they start distributing rootkits.. ) - also, there are at least two methods out there to patch play service dependencies "out of" apps I know of.
Google and find out.
This thread is rife with warez haunts, and it's not even Halloween!

Are you aware of it? You can't use the same apps with the same behavior as before. It's not a big deal. messenger apps for example uses google play services for instant messaging. Many other apps are unreliable without play services.
But you need to root your stock rom and can freeze Google play services(only this one is enough for first testing). It's the main service/app that's needed for every other Google service/app/connection.

I am fully aware of the repercussions. I want to dive in and delete the files, not just freeze them.
I've used the terminal debloater as suggested by @rajatgupta1998 but it doesn't offer the option to delete lib, jar, xml and other files.
At least i don't get the black screen after deleting, which is better than all scripts i flashed so far.

I just want to delete the ones that come with the stock ROM to have a Google-free stock ROM.
It seems certain files (like Google Services Framework) cause the phone to be stuck at black screen during boot.

As I wrote before, you can do the following on stock rom: just freeze/delete Google play services app and you cut every Google communications. You can't execute play store, YouTube, drive, accounts or whatever Google app. You'll see no Google play services wakelock anymore. If framework files are there after that doesn't matter.

Testing now.
@strongst It's actually kinda like having the best of both worlds. It turns out some apps that required the maps API still works, including Maps (from Google).
The added bonus is that is can switch play services on at will.
I just deleted Google apps that i don't use.
Phone has been working without any issues at all. I have very few apps (whatsapp, automateIt, etc). i use xperia keyboard, FOSS apps like new pipe (for youtube), Dnotes (for keep), yalp store (for playe store).
Battery life and SOT have almost doubled.
