Does the US version of 34.4.A.2.19 for Android 8.0 support the fingerprint reader? I am using the UK version and very happy with the fingerprint reader but would prefer the US version.
No, the US version disables the fingerprint reader. May I ask why you prefer the US version? I'm using one of the Balkin versions here in the US and it works perfectly.
I have nothing specific to point to, but it has seemed like the security updates are going to the US version more quickly. Also, I have tried to get some response about the posting of "ads" in the Application section of Software Update (Booking.com and Prime Video currently) and my contact with Sony support always goes to UK support instead of US support. As I said earlier, nothing critical but more personal preference. Not worth abandoning the fingerprint reader though!
Have you perhaps noticed any limitations in group text messaging (no photos, or mass text message as opposed to true group messaging) or in text message formatting when a non-USA firmware is used?

As I suspected, installing the USA firmware enables true group Messaging as opposed to Mass text messaging, and also allows the inclusion of photographs in group messaging. This is in the Xperia xz1 Compact, but I have no reason to suspect that it would be different with the X Compact.

I think the MMS status has changed to group. Looking at a history of a group that includes pics, in Dec 17 a message was treated as "Mass text" then in Feb 18, the note says "conversation is now a group MMS" so I think the group is now the status.
As I said previously, I am using the UK version.

Perhaps UK version is also OK. I believe I had the Customised DE version previously installed.

I understand. I'm rooted and use an ad blocker so I don't really see many ads, and I've never needed to contact support. In that long thread about using the UK firmware there are some comments about using just the part of the firmware that enables the fingerprint reader but using the rest of the US firmware so the phone reports LTE instead of 4G, and a 5 bar RSSI instead of the 4 bar one that the UK one uses. I didn't really understand the process and it didn't matter to me so I didn't spend any time investigating it.
As for the other's question about MMS group messages vs. multi-texts I use Textra so MMS works as it should

If I go to Settings/System/Software update , There are two tabs: Application Updates and System Update. Under Application Updates there are currently two entries: On to install Booking.com and one to install Prime Videos. I currently have neither installed and am not interested in installing them. These were sent by Sony to via the system update process and appear if as they are required to keep the system up to date - otherwise they would just be in the Play Store. I am not willing to install and then silence the apps and I do not believe an ad blocker will stop these. In my opinion, bad move on Sony part to masquerade ads as system updates.
Oh yeah, I know what you are talking about. The "What's new" app. I froze that with titanium. There are lot's of positives for rooting and no negatives that I know of.

Hi,
I am in a situation where I really wonder how I will be able to use my Samsung ( or any other android phone) to work ...
I have the feeling that for everything else I will be able to forget the iphone ( I am waiting for some app on android market for aussie users but it's coming soon) and for many features it will be way better than the iphone ( music without itune, video and game on this awesome screen ....)
Regarding the business I need to be able to do something simple : read a mail and reply/forward it
For the moment I have not been able to do so completely.
For instance, if there is a screenshot embedded in the mail, when I reply or forward the mail my apps will either
*put the image as attachment ( the best case)
*let an empty box and my screenshot will not be anmore in the mail
*create an unreadable mail with xml node everywhere
*put the whole mail into an attachment.
Even for the display of the mail receveid only few app will display the screenshot without changing it into an attachment ( it can be annoying if there are several screenshot with text around in the original mail....)
For the moment I have tested the stock samsung app, HTC work mail 1.00.024, K-9 , touchdown, HTC on froyo stock app ...
Do you have any idea if Android will be one day able to do what windows and apple do for years ??
I thought Froyo would be the answer but I am less and less confident on this ...
PS : I knew when I bought the Samsung that the android 2.1 was not supporting exchange but I thought froyo would and that iterce app would also
PPS : here is an example of what my mail looks like when forward with android app :
<html xmlns:v="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" xmlns:w="urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:word" xmlns:x="urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:excel" xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeowerpoint" xmlns:a="urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:access" xmlns:dt="uuid:C2F41010-65B3-11d1-A29F-00AA00C14882" xmlns:s="uuid:BDC6E3F0-6DA3-11d1-A2A3-00AA00C14882" xmlns:rs="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:rowset" xmlns:z="#RowsetSchema" xmlns:b="urn:schemas-microsoft-
and of course all the text around the screenshot has disappeared
Now my colleague is using Froyo on the Desire and he is still not able to do what I want.
Samsung (the conglomerate) is converting their entire mobile infrastructure to include android powered (specifically the Galaxy S) devices. I'm not sure if the proprietary apps can be ported/moved to other phones or companies but it seems to show that there is alot of confidence in using android for businesses.
Things it will include from what i gather are:
VPN to corporate network.
Access to corporate mail (POP?) from wifi and HSPUDA (secured connection licensed from mobile provider).
what's wrong with installing 3rd party software to connect to outlook/exchange ?
Android doesn't have out of the box support for exchange yet, if that is what you are looking for.
The idea of Android is open source, and a big wide market for all programmers to make some profit by release software that will fill the gap, to gather whatever the people needs.

I am not sure you have read my post correctly ?
I have nothing against installing a 3rd party app that's why I said that I hoped that a 3rd party app would support exchange entirely... but there is no 3rd party app which does the job as the iphone !!!
That's why I tested so many different app
Now one moretime when you say : doesn't support yet ... did you read my post ??
I have tested Froyo and it 's just as bad as android 2.1
So now I have to wait maybe android 3.0 for a potential spport of exchange, is that what you meant ??
In case you guys don't check the main WP7 forums on here, the Microsoft Nodo update is officially available and working. I am updating my phone right now as we speak.
All you have to do is plug your phone into your PC and use the Zune software to update. It should automatically detect and ask for you to update.
Here's a link to a brief write-up on how to do this:

I checked at 3:50PM and still no update for my DVP Unlocked US T-Mobile.
Currently shows Your phone is up to date version 7.0 (7004)
just plugged in, no update yet. it is probably being pushed out in phases. cool that yours is updating, thanks for letting us know!
US DVP will most likely be LAST!
NO UPDATE YET GUYS. MY BAD.
I got some responses back from both the Microsoft Windows Phone Support and Dell Support. Microsoft says that they don't know when we will get it. Only that it will be before the end of the month. Dell support said that they don't know either.
This just boils down to the fact that for us here in the states, and as far as the Dell Venue Pro is concerned, the update release is in T-Mobile's hands.
I just want to know if it will fix the problems with wi-fi connections.
What's included in the update (emphasis mine), courtesy of Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/basics/update-history.aspx
Microsoft said:
Here's a summary of what we've included in each update so far.
March 2011
OS version: 7.0.7390.0
•
Copy & paste. You asked for it—now it's here. Just tap a word and drag the arrows to copy and paste it on your phone. You can copy text from emails, text messages, web pages, and Office Mobile documents, and paste it anywhere you can type. To learn more, see Copy & paste.
•
Faster apps and games. Nobody likes to wait. That's why we've whittled down the time it takes for apps and games to start up and resume. It's all part of our focus on getting you to the things you love, easier and faster.
•
Better Marketplace search. We've streamlined Marketplace search to make it easier to find specific apps, games, or music. Press the Search button in the Apps or Games section of Marketplace and you'll see only apps or games in the results. Press Search in the Music section of Marketplace to search just the music catalog.
•
Other Marketplace improvements. We've improved the stability of Marketplace while you download apps. We've also improved the experience of downloading apps larger than 20 megabytes, upgrading from trial apps to paid apps, using a credit card with an address outside the United States, sharing links to apps via email, sorting Xbox LIVE games by release date, and creating an Xbox LIVE account from within the Games Hub.
•
Wi-Fi improvements. We now display your phone's Media Access Control (MAC) address in Settings. (You might need this info if you try to connect to a Wi-Fi network that uses MAC address filtering. To learn more, see Connect to a Wi-Fi network.) We've also removed the limit on the number of Wi-Fi profiles that you can store and reduced the time it takes to start your phone if you've stored lots of Wi-Fi profiles.
•
Outlook improvements. We've improved the experience of viewing iPhone photo attachments you receive from a non-Exchange-based email account (such as a Google Mail, Hotmail, or Yahoo! Mail account), using the Global Address List (GAL) when connecting to Exchange Server 2003 using Exchange ActiveSync, and working with email display names that contain brackets (for example, "David Alexander [Contoso]").
•
Messaging improvements. We've improved the experience of receiving Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) messages if your phone uses a PIN-locked SIM.
•
Facebook integration. We've improved the experience of syncing Facebook accounts.
•
Camera improvements. We've improved the stability of switching between camera and video modes.
•
Audio improvements. We've improved the experience of using a Bluetooth headset to make calls when you're playing music or videos.
•
Other performance improvements. This month's update also includes software from several phone manufacturers that improves the performance of specific models. Naturally, if you don't have one of the affected models, we won't install this portion of the update on your phone.

Thanks. So that would confirm that our update is being held hostage by T-Mobile.
And I was so excited to read the news on engadget's website, only to be disappointed...
I'm okay with getting late updates as long as I get one but I really hope DOJ does not approve the AT&T buying Tmobile. I HATE AT&T.

I am from India as well with T-Mo (unlocked ) and Live ID with US address to access marketplace.
Is there anyway to Debrand the DVP? I think we would receive the update sooner.
no access to registry...yet
Anyone with non-carrier DVP who is willing to volunteer to help in getting the nodo update un-branded?
Basically this is what i need:
A Non Carrier DVP which has not been updated to NoDo, but is eligible or being prompted for. (or) A Non Carrier DVP which has been updated to NoDo, but is willing to reset the device to have it updated again thru my steps.
What will i do:
The user needs to install Wireshark and capture the log for Microsoft servers and send me the same. I can then figure out the direct path to the download.
Let me know and i will PM the details.

Any idea if any future hacks would allow us to backup our text messages?
Why is it that we have to wait for T-Mobile to (eventually) give the ok for an update? Why didn't MS just make it so we plug our phones in, hit Zune update and everything does its thing?
Reading the Twitter updates about Euro T-Mobile pushing the update at the end of April is a little disheartening. There's no telling when US T-Mobile will push the update...
Okay so i noticed that Samsung has removed a few features such as: automatic time (using internet to adjust time), webpage view (switching between Android and desktop view but it's okay because I can change it using "about:debug"), and the labs feature in the web browser. Will any of these be availabe in the upcoming touchwiz update?
Interestingly, all 3 of these options are (still?) available on the 4G/LTE version from Verizon. I wonder if it they haven't been removed yet from the VZ version, or if they may be coming back to the Wifi version (or if this will always be a difference between them)?
Yes it will.
TouchWiz is a revolution in tablet computing. The features and experience completely blow away any other honeycomb tablet out there. There is no doubt samsung tablets are going to be a huge success and TouchWiz is going to play a major role.
Time sync
I read a post where someone said that the time update is from the cell towers, not the internet- so maybe it makes sense that it works on the vzw version but not the wifi version? Someone else might have more knowledge in this realm and tell us for sure? Also in the post I read, someone asked if there was an app that might sync with the net, but no one replied...

Most Android devices can sync via NTP, which can sync over any data connection.
The LTE version does have the additional benefit of NITZ from the radio.
My guess on whether a OEM enables or disables OS features has to do with time to adequately test with their hardware. These non mainstream functions can be hidden and most wont miss them. They can then later enable via an update once they verify they function without breaking popular functions and apps.
I had the Asus Transformer which had all these functions enabled, including browser navigational thumb controls. But i noticed the keyboars lag and force closes / random kills to home screen compared to the Galaxy Tab. Now could be completely unrelated. But it does seem peculiar.

Maybe its the wrong forum for this but since I’m a SG2 user so……
This is a VERY beta app but I’ve tested it and it works. Maybe it’s some other apps out there that do the same thing but I haven’t seen or tested any.
With the app you can send and receive files with friends from your phone to your friends phones via WIFI and 3G.
I installed SPRIID on two of my phones and created two different users. Then I sent a request from phone 1(user) to phone2(user) and user 2 accepted.
From within gallery on phone I picked a picture and choose share, spriid quick, and the user on phone2. After a few seconds phone2 two got the picture and its saved on the internal SD.
Again, the app is buggy but it’s an interesting concept. When you press options buttons and, others you get some Swedish text saying ‘not implemented yet, coming soon. One of them, I think, must be the choice to receive to ext-SD.
Maybe one way, amongst many, for beta testers or others to receive files from dev directly to SD?
Description:
http://www.abctrick.com/2011/10/spriid-arrives-on-android-market-with.html
Market:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.hellberg.spriid&rdid=com.hellberg.spriid&rdot=1&pli=1
BTW. The name SPRIID I think is an acronym for ‘distribute’ as it sounds like the Swedish word for it as the devs are Swedish.
"must be the choice to receive to ext-SD."
"must be the choice to receive to ext-SD."
It's already there, when you send files you can select notification type.
- normal notification
- ring
- silently send to SD card

Security Advisory: A.I.Type Keyboard Sends All Your Keystrokes To Their Servers In Plain-Text - Sometimes You Can't Trust The Cloud
Posted by Artem Russakovskii in Applications, News
One of the features that really differentiates Android from other mobile operating systems is the ability to install a custom keyboard that works for you. I constantly keep jumping between a variety of keyboards as new updates come out (right now I've settled on SwiftKey due to its unparalleled prediction technology), but when some of our readers pointed out A.I.type Keyboard's "psychic" word completion, I had to check it out.
However, what I found in A.I. Keyboard's Market description prevented me from even installing it - all smart predictions happen in the cloud, which means everything you type (or almost everything) gets sent over the data connection to their servers. You can turn it off - sure, but then you lose "psychic" abilities, which seems to be this keyboard's main selling point. I'm not even kidding about the "psychic" part - here's an excerpt from their Market page:
"Psychic word completions and predictions are generated by A.I.type’s servers on the Cloud. When the device is offline or Internet connection is too slow, or if you disabled Cloud-based prediction, word suggestions will be generated by the device only.
Privacy notice: while installing A.I.type Keyboard, you will receive a warning message about collecting sensitive data. This is the standard general-purpose Android message issued for any downloaded keyboard and it does not pertain to A.I.type. Our keyboard DOES NOT COLLECT YOUR SENSITIVE DATA."
Do I want a random company to know what I'm typing into every single text field (outside of possibly password fields)? Pardon my language, but hell no.
Oh, and about that last privacy part... A.I. Keyboard probably doesn't collect your sensitive data, but what it does do is send all those prediction queries over to the cloud in plain-text, unencrypted, for everyone on your local Wi-Fi network or anywhere in the request's path to see. Like so:

Needless to say, the app went to the trash right after our tests were over.
When I brought up my initial privacy concerns to A.I.type's CEO Eitan Fitusi before even digging into this, he had the following to say (all spelling left as is, text in italics added by me):
"Hi Arten (that's not my name)
We here those concerning before and understand them, that why we work hard on our new local data model, that already available in the current version, We are going to release very soon a new version, that will have a setting for shutting down cloud support prediction, although the prediction quality is effected, it is still great, and as close as possible to the full scale prediction, what mostly damaged from lack of cloud is names, locations or other vocabulary that is domain specific.
This new version also including a new superior learning model that learn the user, and enhanced the predictioncorrectioncompletion quality based on the user writing style, names and unique words that's the users use, user model will be stored locally and won't sent data to the cloud at all.
Having say that, I know that it's not much, but I can assure you that we are very concern about are user privacy and very strict regarding their data.
Also if you look at it the other way, you can wright an email with whatever keyboard you like then send it via Gmail that officially state that its learn YOUR data (or WhatsApp, Viper, Skype…. They all have access to your data)
Any way as I say before next version will give the user the option to use only local services, and keep is data local only."
Let this serve as a wake-up call to both users placing trust in the cloud and developers who don't utilize even the most basic security and privacy standards (hey, https would have been nice).
Remember, all cloud services are not created equal. I hope for their sake that A.I.type fixes this blatant disregard for privacy in the near future, and as for the rest of you - you've been warned.

What!!! I use ai type keyboard for everything, and I think this post is maybe correct cause when typing ai type shows a small refreshing symbol above where you type at right, maybe that means it's taking info from its servers. Ill switch to some other keyboard or maybe switch predictions off.
This post here is typed through ai type keyboard.
Edit: just checked, their is option to switch cloud based prediction off and it still works good.
Cloud based predictions are just more perfect.
hit thankxx if i helped. sent from my mind through telepathy (ya its possible)!
That's a little naughty, and the grammar and spelling leave a lot to be desired.
guys, fyi even the standard android keyboard has the ability to capture and record everything you type.

Yes, but they don't send everything you type unencrypted over your wifi network and then over the internet where anyone can sniff it out. I can't imagine how careless and sloppy those developers are.
I only use Swype, I never really felt comfortable installing other 3Rd parry keyboards from unknown companies because of this. I don't believe Swype does this, because for one it works fine offline, and I don't think major manufacturers like Samsung,HTC, motorola etc. would bundle it if there was such a big security hole.

True, whilst data is sent unencrypted one thing we need to understand fully is that android devices are inherently insecure. Encryption, is just the tip of the security iceberg.
For a start, typically on android you sync your contacts, messages, apps to google. Google knows where you are ALL the time regardless of whether you turn location on or off. google can remote-wipe your device, ask the guy who got a Nexus S with ICS
There are a number of apps we install/uninstall on a regular basis that have more permissions than they require and there are probably a lot that get taken off before they become public domain. I totally get that sending stuff plain text is BS. The points I'm trying to get across are
1) The Android platform is inherently insecure
2) Just because something is encrypted won't make it more secure. There are various points for security to fail for example the the thumbs behind the message is a point of failure as is what happens within the cloud.
Also bear in mind that from the guys providing the service encryption could be a pain as it would slow down their service which would impact the end user.
its an interesting one.....

Secured? Nope, its not just the keyboard, the moment you use a smartphone, you have lost your "privacy" and have been "tagged" enjoy reading [INFO][Who is Spying & Monitoring you] Google removes privacy feature from Android .

undisclosed permissions
NEWB HERE
I learned they keep most of the worst permissions undisclosed by the app store with the code: android required "false"
I have tried to edit the android manifest but could not repackage.
If there are any developers who can take a stab at modifying this app and removing all the bad permissions, C2D stuff, and the XML strings and then post it on XDA, that would be so nice because this is an otherwise great app.

just crack this app open and see for yourself. They are spying on you and saving your data to a cloud!!!!
this is an old thread but I also have some weird experiences with this app. It was my favourite key. app for a few years but I don't use it anymore. One day I wanted to write a comment on some forum, but when I started typing, suddenly everything I was typing on my phone during last few days appeared in the comment section.
