V20 APT-X Bluetooth Issues - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Hi folks, wondering if anyone has dealt with this issue before.
I have a Kenwood KDC-X701 headunit in my Jeep which supports APT-X. I have never had an issue with any of my android phones connecting to the headunit, specifically my Galaxy S5 running LOS 14 nightlies. Always auto-connects and displays APT-X on the headunit (NOT AAC)
I broke the screen on the S5 so I bought an LG V20 (LS997) knowing full well that development has ceased on the V20, with the assumption that a stock ROM will at least be fairly stable.
Enter the issues I am having with my new V20, latest Sprint build 100% stock.
When I let the headunit auto-connect to the V20, it displays APT-X but no audio comes through the head unit unless I initiate a call (no music regardless of application, no google maps audio, etc). After disconnecting the call, it goes back to not passing audio.
If I disable auto-connect on the headunit and manually connect my V20, it connects and displays "AAC" and will play audio without issues.
Now, normally I would say "screw it, I found a workaround", but I tested my S5 and V20 side-by-side with some Modest Mouse FLAC files (through PowerAmp), and APT-X makes a noticeable difference in clarity. The mids/highs sound muddy on the V20 (AAC), and super clear on the S5 (APT-X). Enough so that I spent quite some time debugging it to see if I could figure out what the source of the issue was.
Is this something related to the APT-X HD codec? I spent an hour just now messing with it and I can NOT get the V20 to pass audio when connected via APT-X, but it passes audio just fine via AAC. 100% sure this is the V20 because every other Android I have tried (even my friend's S7, stock VZW), and none of them have this issue!
TL;DR
My V20 won't pass audio using the APT-X codec, but will pass audio using the AAC codec. My head-unit always auto-negotiates APT-X and I have to manually disconnect/reconnect through my V20 to get it to negotiate AAC and pass audio.
Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated
EDIT:
Here are some pics I took of the actual display
AAC https://photos.app.goo.gl/6urGBAmHOSGTy1Cn1

Driving me mad because I like to just get in the car, hit play on the headunit, and not need to take my phone out of my pocket

Same problem here
This could have just as easily been my post word for word. I got a V20 over the weekend, replaced my old stereo with a x501 so that I could have bluetooth. Took me about a day to figure out that I have to disconnect and reconnect in order to get sound, even thou it is clearly connected via bluetooth and I can see what song is playing on the stereo. I too noticed that this is happening when its using APTX codec, when I disconnect and reconnect it for some reason switches to AAC and works perfectly. Yep, and it's very annoying because I do have to get into you phone and disconnect/reconnect every time I start my car. After that everything works as expected.

Have you checked online for a firmware update for the radio? I have the kdc-x599 and mine had an update specifically for Bluetooth related issues and mine streams just fine over the aptx codec.

Thanks for the advice! I was actually on a much older firmware version so I went ahead and updated my head unit (from v.109 to v.116) but unfortunately there was no change
I am going to try a full factory reset on the head-unit this weekend but it's not looking promising unfortunately
It is pretty annoying to have to initiate the connection from the phone, especially when you hop in/out of your car like at a gas station and end up not remembering till you are on the road. I was looking for a widget or something that could auto-initiate a specific bluetooth connection instead of having to go into the settings (or toggle bluetooth on/off) but haven't found one.
I really like the concept of the phone and the hardware, but LG is just "not good" at Android. My best advice is for them to run just pure AOSP and fire their OS development team, but hopefully Google will force their hand with Project Treble.
Compounding things further I dug out my S5 with Lineage OS to set it up as a garage phone and remembered how much I miss just pure AOSP (and root access, and no bloatware, and stability)...
I wonder if the KDC-X702 and latest models have the same issue, but confirmed that it was an issue specific to the V20 and it seems futile to change the whole head unit because of the shoddy bluetooth stack in the V20.
So, I will grudgingly deal with the issue and try to push it from my mind every single time I get into my car until I can find a suitable replacement for the V20, but the damn headphone amp has spoiled me which makes it hard. Maybe someone will come out with a nice streamlined Type-C DAC/AMP combo but I am not holding my breath
EDIT:
Last ditch effort - I am going to send an email to both Kenwood and LG tech support to try and get some engineering assistance.
I know LG is going to write me off, but Kenwood seems actively engaged in development (last firmware update for the KDC-X701 was March 15th, just days ago). It's not on their end of the equations so I am not sure what they can do anyways

Is your phone rooted? That sounds kinda similar to the issue of using certain audio mods or tweaks on the V20. I use Viper and to activate the mod over Bluetooth I have to use an app created by WETA that basically forces a phone call so it can activate the effects. My TMobile version doesn't have any problem playing over aptx on mine regardless of audio mod though but it sounds kinda similar.

No, I am 100% stock, Sprint ZVD firmware (latest update)

Mine is stock and I did update the firmware on the headunit(x501) to 116, this is what Kenwood told me which I tried with no luck...
I recommend that you initialize the Bluetooth settings, reset the unit, and verify the firmware is up to date. Simply press the volume knob to enter FUNCTION, turn the knob and select BT MODE, INITIALIZE, and YES. You may then remove the faceplate and press the small button on the radio with a paper clip or ball point pen.

Once i told them this did not work they asked me this...
I recommend that you pair and connect a different device to confirm if you are experiencing a compatibility issue or if the unit needs to be serviced. For testing purposes try a phone manufactured by a different brand or one listed on the Bluetooth compatibility list.

None of the phones on their list support aptx, they are all very old phones. What I don't understand is why does it try to use aptx only when the headunit boots, then it will switch to AAC when I disconnect and reconnect bluetooth from the phone. If the phone is setup to use aptx, wouldn't try to negotiate aptx everytime it connects? Anyway, AAC works but its a hassle every time I jump in and out of the car. Is this just an issue with the LG V20 or Kenwood? I dont' have any other bluetooth devices that use aptx to test with... and since other phone I have only use aac I can verify the headunit either.
On a side note, I also have issues with hand mode. when I connect the phone via usb it will only provide power. I have spent no time troubleshooting this so it could be as simple as a cable issues. I was curious if you have connected the LG V20 via usb and been able to use hand mode?

@G2T
Do you have a Sprint variant as well?
I have a T-Mobile variant and a Kenwood unit and I have no issues with using aptx. Mine doesn't display the codec on the unit but I have used logcat to verify that it doesn't switch back to aac as I've had Bluetooth issues before on a certain TMobile firmware

[Q] Bluetooth audio quality

Is there any way to fix the bluetooth audio quality other than switching to a CM-based ROM?
My old phone over bluetooth sounds fine. My S4 via a wired connection sounds fine. My S4 over bluetooth sounds like everything was sampled at 32 kHz. All other equipment is the same, so I'm relatively sure it's a bluetooth-specific issue. My girlfriend's S4 does the same thing.
So, any fixes? I'd really like to avoid switching to an aftermarket ROM right now.

Random guess: Could this issue be caused by the adaptive sound feature? I'm not a true audiophile, but I haven't noticed a problem through my receiver in the car or at home.
Try playing something with cymbals and a lot of treble. Turn the volume up a bit higher than normal while still maintaining a reasonable level. The cymbals sound like someone is smacking a plastic grocery bag with a stick instead of being crisp and clean like they should be. I can then disconnect the S4, connect my old phone, and play the same mp3 without any sound distortion. Or I can play the same mp3 from the S4 via aux and it sounds fine.
Try it on both bluetooth and aux. If you truly don't notice a difference, I guess it must just be my phone. If it does do it however, you definitely don't need to be an audiophile to hear it.
My old phone had the exact same problem until I moved to JB on a CM build. The problem there is well-documented as existing on the S3 (try looking up bitpool settings), but I kind of figured they would have fixed it by now. I'm coming from the world of HTC, so I was hoping there is a fix for Samsung.
Sorry to revive this thread, but I have an update.
My car has built-in bluetooth for phone only, so no a2dp. I have a third-party bluetooth adapter that I'm using for music.
I've found that when both of these are connected, the audio quality (especially on trebles and guitars with distortion) is absolutely terrible. That was the point of my original post. Since then, I've determined that this happens ONLY when I am paired with both my car and my third-party bluetooth. I can actually pair and unpair from my car in real time and hear the audio quality immediately get better/worse. The quality gets worse immediately when it pairs, even if the car bluetooth is not in use (but still connected).
I've verified this is the case with both my phone and my girlfriend's S4. Can anyone with such a setup verify this does or does not happen for them? I'm thinking this is a bug with the bluetooth stack, and it'd be nice if it could be fixed. If anyone can try pairing to two different devices and confirm my problem, I'll start a bug report with Samsung. Otherwise I'll try another bluetooth adapter for a2dp.

Anyone else having issues w/ bluetooth not providing media audio option?

Have this issue w/ the S7, note7 and now this s8+. The S5, S6 works, note5, etc. Exact same results with the phones that do not work.
In my other cars it works fine so I know its my Kia but I don't have any idea how I can rectify this. Called the tech at Kia and he said they've not tested the note 7 and may never as the car is a few years old so It looks like I'm on my own here. On my 2013 Kia optima w/ navi I do not get media audio so only BT that works is the phone. It will show the first song sometimes on pandora (Streaming audio, NOT pandora app radio) but never will update after that. All audio always comes from phone speaker. I can change songs from the stereo but that's it. Totally useless. Works fine in my other cars and my BT radio in my garage so it's a problem w/ my Kia but WTF?? My note 3, note 5 and S6 work just fine. Very disappointing. My wife is running android 6.x on her s6 and it works so it is not that.
I had a ticket into google on this for my note7 but they blamed samsung saying the ROM is fully customized by samsung. Samsung says it's googles issue.
Anyone else have this issue? Any suggested fixes?
Yes, I had this issue! When I got my S8 yesterday it would connect for phone and the third(?) option, but not for the media option. Your car might be the issue though, if none of those phones work. Mine did show three options: phone, media en another one.
Well: during the car ride I noticed there was an update for 'Samsung Connect' so I downloaded that. After that update still no joy. I then proceeded into work, obviously disconnecting the bluetooth connection. Once I got back in my car at the end of the day the connection magically worked. So it might be one of a few things:
1. Update Samsung Connect (if you can)
2. Disable bluetooth
3. Remove bluetooth paired device
4. Turn off car and restart phone
5. Try again
I`m about to head out for work again so I`ll see whether mine still works or not.

Yeah so there's prolly something else wrong, as mine did show the media option. Sorry
Yeah it occurs on all 2011-2013 kia/hyundais w/ navigation and i'm sure other cars as well. Nobody wants to fix it and basically it keeps me from even using this phone.

I have the same issue. I have a 2012 of the same car, Navigation with Infinity speakers. This is not the UVO head unit. I can connect for phone calls and contacts, but all media plays through the phone. I can see the first item from the music app, and can only skip to next song (I haven't tried previous song as I am only streaming). It does not pause though. All audio keeps coming through the phone no matter what.
I've enabled/disabled streaming on the car. I've reset the radio/head unit. I've reset the Bluetooth on the car. I've unpaired from the car side and phone side. I've tried various combinations of these things. None has fixed it. I've mentioned the problem in forums here:

Try the bluetooth app called bluetooth auto connect. I can not connect w/ my car on my s8 and s7.
Dave
I think it is samsung software. I paired it with a pioneer avic head unit for a trip 8 hours away to deliver the car to my friend. When first paired, it worked fine. Most of the time no issues. But for some reason after one of the rest stops (turned car off) I ran into that issue. When you go into BT settings in the phone, the media option was grayed out.
Only way to fix it was to forget the device, and repair it. It happened a few times on the way over.
Now that my friend has the car, he has no issues and streams with his Moto Z.
I have another issue with my car. The phone connects to Bluetooth but I can't navigate thought my music folder within the car system. Previously I had no issue with S7 edge and iPhone 7 plus. This is driving me crazy considering that Android auto just sucks with music playback. Most of the time audio apps I use (Spotify / Google play music) seems to do not work properly.

I need to toggle off and on the bluetooth 2-3 times for it to connect to media audio. Call audio goes on every time, it is a pain to connect this way every time. It worked perfectly until the first Nougat update.
That certainly isn't the case for kia/hyundais and a few other cars produced around 2011-2014. What make/model is your car?
Did you resolve this? I think I might have seen your post in the samsung forums. I have a 2013 Optima with Nav and having the exact same issue. I've done everything in the samsung forums to no effect. TIA.

Yes, bluetooth auto connect
I have the same issue with a Civic. With S2, it paired fine, but contacts only synced like 200 of them. Music info displayed.
With S8, imports all contacts fine, syncs music fine, but no music metadata. I would like to see artist name, track and album on screen.
All apps I have tried do not work
My issue with the S8+ is that I cannot get my AppRadio 3 microphone to issue voice commands despite having all the correct settings for Google as near as I can figure. The head unit works fine on my LG G3. I cannot for the life of me figure out what the problem is. It's destroying the phone's usability.
Old thread but I was having the same issue and found a fix that's been working pretty reliably for me so I wanted to reply in case I can help anyone here.
I was having the problem with my g6 and Hyundai. Phone connects to call audio fine but media audio won't play through the car, I can see the song that's playing and even use steering wheel controls to change it but sound comes out of phone.
What I did. Disconnect from the car, connect to another Bluetooth speaker and play music through it. Connect to the cars Bluetooth and you should get a notification asking what device you want to play audio on, pick the car. Should work for about two weeks and then you'll have to repeat the process.
Hope this works for you guys as well.

Really, really poor bluetooth audio quality?

On my G6, I have really terrible audio quality over Bluetooth connections, I've had two separate G6s, of different colors, received weeks apart, and they both suck for Bluetooth audio, especially my Sony car stereo, and LG Tone Free... can anybody else report on their experience? Does your LS993 sound awful on your Bluetooth devices?
Have a fairly new G6 bluetooth og Bose earpiece working very well, also on 2010 F150 pick up and 2012 Buick no audio issues. Audio has been fine so far.
Mine also is pretty poor. The volume level is about half the level of the satellite radio or fm stations in my car
Hello all.
I had G2 in the past and I use to listen music in my car, using Bluetooth connection to Pioneer head unit. I have Spotify premium account and I have my Playlist downloaded with the best quality. However once I got G6 a week ago I noticed that audio quality from the g6 with the same songs, same Playlist, same Spotify account, is not as good as it was with g2. So I did a short research and found a thread in the net where people reported the same problem.
A guy from the thread suggested to disconnect all other Bluetooth devices from the phone (like smart watch or band) and actually that solved my problem. I have MiBand2. Once I disconnected it the audio quality became as good as before.
So guys, if you have a smart watch, try to remove it and check the quality again. I hope that helps.
I went a couple of months with no issues on my Kia Optima, then suddenly, I started getting really bad aliasing on the highs. As said above, I turned off my Huwaei watch and the sound was normal again. After a bit, I turned my watch back on, and it remained fine.
I had it happen once again many weeks later; and again, a quick off - wait - on, cycle with the watch fixed it. So whatever it is, seems to be a bandwith allocation issue with the bluetooth software. From March '17 thorugh almost Sept '17 and I've only had to do this twice? I think I can live with this.
Hey heres something for you to try..
Download WiFi Scanner from App Store.. Look at your 2.4ghz networks.. then keep in mind your cordless phones, IP Cams, Walkie Talkies, baby monitors in your area.. You may be a victim of signal interference.
Bluetooth operates on the 2.4ghz spectrum along with a TON of other devices now available.
Your sony stereo may be the culprit.. if is an aftermarket "Xplod" deck
Im an audiophile, and my G6 runs better than my Samsungs.. (also no issues with the "preventative volume warning"
What you also may have is an app that is causing the volume to lower...
For example.. when i stream the music player with the stock app, sometimes Snapchat notification sounds cause the rest of the volume to be lower..
Google Maps is another one that can hijack the sound but you can control in settings.
For using music try a different app ( i use Maple Player) and it works great ..
Based on your experiences i think its something outside causing the problem to be honest. but thats ALOT of trial and error to deal with.. if worse comes to worse- you can always get an aux jack bluetooth adapter for your car stereo if it IS the stereos bluetooth receiver .

Samsung S8 Crackling Bluetooth audio and Bluetooth Codecs

Hi Guys.
I've seen a number of posts on this subject so here's my story and my experience thus far.
I've been using an iPhone 7 since it came out. I've been very happy playing music in my car (Fiesta with SYNC2 system) all this time. My significant other has been using an S8 for some time, and her music always sounded 'crackly' (for lack of a better word) in the car. I thought this was just her Spotify or something.
2 Days ago I bought my own S8 and I had exactly the same issue.
Now from some research I've been able to deduce that this is down to the Bluetooth Codec the phone uses. I changed mine to aptX yesterday and the music quality was great. Didn't sound like a 200KB MP3 downloaded in the early 2000's anymore.
However...
Last night I had to reboot my phone for reasons, and the developer options reset completely, which I believe is normal behavior. But now I can't set my Bluetooth Codec anymore? I change it, the moment I close the menu, it reverts back to SBC. I tried this with Bluetooth off, Bluetooth on and not connected, Bluetooth on and connected, no joy. It keeps reverting. Same goes for all the other Bluetooth settings (i.e bitrate).
So gentleman I ask you humbly, wtf? Why does the settings not stick and is this normal behavior? Is there a way I can force it to use AAC or aptX once more? I really have come to enjoy this phone but playing music in my car is a very very big factor and since AUX and USB (can't seem to play Apple Music/Google Music via USB) isn't an option, I'm stuck with Bluetooth.
Thanks in advance,
Have you made sure dual audio is disabled???
If not, go to Bluetooth, turn it on, hit the tripple dots in the top right and tap on "Dual Audio"
Make sure it's off and now try changing to AptX or whatever codec works best for you.
Disable / re-enable Buetooth and see if it sticks. (Try rebooting too)
Also, Bluetooth codecs will automatically change if the device you're connecting to doesn't support your choice of codec.
Keep me posted

Hi Corey,
Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, the above didn't work Dual audio was disabled, I enabled it and disabled it again. I tried changing the codec and bit rate but the result is the same, the moment I close the menu or turn on Bluetooth, it reverts back to SBC and Best Effort bitrate. I should mention that when I turn on the Bluetooth, it doesn't connect to anything, the only paired device at this point is my car.
Interestingly enough, if I don't close the menu but just hit the middle button, the settings will stay as is and the audio is great. What I haven't tried yet is closing the menu after a 'good' connection is made to the car. It may be that the setting sticks but the menu says otherwise. But I can definitely confirm that if I close the menu and then connect, the audio is garbage.
As for the compatibility of the car's Bluetooth, well it's a Ford SYNC2 system which from what I can see is actually quite basic. I am starting to this the problem isn't as much the codec, but rather the bitrate at which the phone is playing/sending music across the Bluetooth.

I'm not gonna' lie, I'm not very impressed by the Bluetooth on the S8... or Bluetooth in general.
It's lousy most of the time, mine always distorts and especially around emergency vehicles... (Could be interference from their coms???)
If possible, just stick to good 'ol copper wire
I can't imagine wireless audio not ever being interfered with and will always stay wired.
Also, try a music app called Poweramp.
It has many settings involving latency etc. It has a trial for 2 weeks and is worth EVERY penny if you decide to buy IMHO.
Try the build version first, if that doesn't have settings that you need, try the alpha version.
It has lots of latency settings etc
I'm guessing higher latency = better results as it has more time to be pushed over BT before the sound is reproduced.
I'm probably wrong though.
Can't beat lots of settings tho aye.

Morning Corey,
Yeah so my situation at the moment is to have my old iPhone in the car at all times as a glorified bluetooth player. I've also gone out and bought an auxiliary cable for when the iPhone's battery dies on me (happens more often than one would think). And to have a charger for the iPhone, charger for the Samsung and aux cable for the Samsung all plugged in becomes really messy.
It must be something to do with the Bluetooth 5 feature. I don't know what version the iPhone is (cba to check) but it works like a dream.
Wish we had some form of backwards compatibility or a feature to force an older version with Samsung. Just sucks buying a phone which is really not cheap in ZA just to have the music sound like a 300kb MP3 played on Winamp with the treble bars turned up all the way.
I'll try out the app you suggested mate, thanks!

No worries and if you are referring to a USB cigarette lighter charger/USB charger then try the multi-cables.
Try one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Poweradd-L...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=59QBSADVWM0NKGZGTQ4K

Bluetooth sounds issues with car

Since moving to the S10+ from S9+ , I noticed the audio quality on the car bluetooth cracks at certain points. (Example, listening to Tron Legacy - Overture towards the end).
I have done some research and tried changing the codec but it always reverts back. I would have thought with the latest update this would have been fixed!!!
Anyone tried anything else?
You cannot change the codec. The developer setting is not true or real - it is automatically detecting what the car and the file are able to play to the phone.
I don't know why people think that matters.
My bluetooth has no issues with quality. How old is the car? Is it using like Bluetooth 2.1 or something?

My car is a 2016 registered car, i've connected my wife's iphone and the sound is better, i have also connected my s9+ (refurbished as the s9+ is an insurance replacement due to my s9+ being stolen and i am selling it) and the quality is better.
Maybe I should download the firmware and reflash?

One time a few weeks ago my sound was kind of quiet and I wasn't sure why, I eventually forgot about it but a few days later I was messing with settings in "Sound Assistant" and the regular system connections, and I did something with one of the controls like Media Volume Sync or maybe in dev settnigs for Disable Bluetooth Absolute volume, and everything got WAY louder.
Also, sometimes you may need to reboot after making those big changes just because any phone can glitch and not apply right.
If you don't have Sound Assistant it's in the Play Store and the Galaxy store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsung.android.soundassistant&hl=en_US
I'd try looking at these things and enable\disable:
Media Volume Limiter
Media Volume Sync
Disable Bluetooth Absolute Volume (Developer settings)
Dual Audio setting\toggle
Dolby Atmos On\Off? Auto?
Let me know if any of those help I'll reply when I see if you quote me!

I've tried the Samsung app and the other options nothing improves the quality. I have downloaded the last firmware and flashed, still having the sound quality issues.
I have also updated the firmware on my car but that hasn't changed anything, but its definitely the phone that is an issue, i've even dug out my S7 and paired it to the car with no issues. When I connect the S10+ via aux the quality is much better.
