Enabling better call recording - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Hi All,
I'm looking to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to undo the restrictions that Motorola appears to have placed on their stock firmware with respect to call recording. Let me explain what I mean and why it matters to me.
In general, call recording apps that I have used allow you to record both the input and output audio from a call using something that is referred to in various apps as the "voice call" or "voice communication" input. Basically, it captures all audio regardless of the source or allows other stuff you might change in the call such as using bluetooth, or muting on your side of the line if you are, for example, listening on a conference call and trying to keep down the ambient background noise.
This appears to be disabled on the Moto G5 plus I own running stock firmware. Instead, something else is instead available, which certain apps appear to refer to as "mic" or "voice uplink". Unfortunately, this other option has certain limitations, the biggest being I can't mute myself without cutting off all audio recording for the rest of the call. Feel free to try it out and see what I mean.
On the other hand, I flashed LineageOS on my phone and no such limitation exists. So this appears not to be a hardware limitation but a software one that Moto built in. I've also used this app with no issues on an old LG3 I used to have.
I prefer stock firmware to LineageOS for a number of reasons. But this limitation is a big problem for me since I use this for work to record calls I need to participate in but sometimes I don't want to be taking notes in the middle of the call.
Does anyone have any suggestions (root/custom recovery, magisk modules, xposed all on the table as solutions I can work with) for how to remove this limitation made by Motorola in their stock firmware?
Thanks in advance.

i was using call recorder app, it was working fine, But when i got upgraded to 8.1, none of the call recorder apps could record the sound of the other side caller!

Does ACR work even after the Oreo 8.1 update?
I'm asking because, I'm already using ACR with Nougat for now, and don't want to sacrifice the call recording functionality for getting Oreo update.
Please reply.
Thank you!

I updated to Oreo 8.1 last friday.
I'm using Call Recorder Pro (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appstar.callrecorderpro) and i only hear the other party on very low volume in the background. Used to work great in Android 7.

Also tried ACR (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nll.acr) and that one failed for me also.
Hopefully someone can come up with the right app and/or settings.

Obviously I am using motto g5 plus.

Hello everybody,
After getting the reply from "Abhineet m25" I finally updated my phone to Oreo today.
And I would like confirm that, the Call Recorder - ACR app really does work fine in Android 8.1
Just to be clear, I'm using Moto G5 plus (Potter), Indian version
Android Version 8.1.0 (Stock)
Build number OPS28.85-13
ACR Pro30.0 (but free version should also work)
Recording Audio Source Auto
Hope it helps

Tested it with the same software-version but recording still sounds very distant. This used to be much clearer before.

Confirmed working call recording solution for the Moto X

Hi Guys,
I had been looking for a working call recording solution for the Moto X for a long time. None of the recording apps worked for me - they either only recorded via the mic so you couldn't hear the other party, or they didn't work at all.
Finally, I tried the recently-updated Call Recorder by @skvalex , link here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.skvalex.callrecorder
ROOT IS REQUIRED
This app works perfectly to record calls. I'm not sure when the update was made to be compatible with the Moto X, but it definitely works now. Both sides of the conversation are recorded with excellent quality. The app costs $9.95 but it well worth the cost, IMO. It has a very CLEAN and polished UI and it just works!
I like that the app gives you a non-intrusive record button located in the top right corner. It doesn't cover any of the dial-er buttons or obstruct caller-id. It works for both incoming and outgoing calls as well.
I'm using the Republic Wireless Moto X -- the only "flaw" that I have found (and it probably ONLY applies to the RW Moto X and not the other variants) is that automatic call recording does not work when a call is placed or received over WiFi. Not an issue for me though, as I prefer to not automatically record all calls (I have it set to manual record only), and only record the conversations that I want by simply tapping the record button. This works perfectly on both WiFi and Cell.
In addition, the call recorder continues to work flawlessly even when the call is handed over from WiFi to Cell (seamless WiFi to Cell handover is part of Republic Wireless's unique hybrid calling features).
I don't care for the "persistent notification", so I have used Gravity Box to hide the notification. Everything still works flawlessly even with the persistent notification hidden.
I'm very impressed with skvalex's work here! Additionally, he even offers a 2 week trial version that you can download here on XDA! Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441643 < This way you can be absolutely sure the app will meet your needs before buying it.
This can come in handy for NUMEROUS reasons. I won't get into all of that - if you have a need to record calls, you have your own reasons.
And lastly, the disclaimer: CALL RECORDING IS ILLEGAL IN SOME JURISDICTIONS!!! Make absolutely sure this is legal for you to use. In my state, only one party is required to know that they are being recorded. Since I am the other "party" and I know I'm recording my calls, this makes it perfectly legal for me to use.
DEFINITELY check your local laws before you use this. If you record someone in a jurisdiction where it is illegal, you may find yourself in a great deal of legal trouble.
@skvalex : I hope you don't mind the promotion I'm giving you here. I tried every call recorder known to man and none of them worked for me. I was absolutely thrilled to find that yours works flawlessly with my Moto X. Thanks!!!!
EDIT 8/20/14:
I figured out how to get call recorder to work with TowelPieRoot Temp-root!
All you have to do is go into settings and change the recording path to /sdcard/voix
For some reason (on temp roots with no write access) you cannot use the default path of /storage/emulated/0/voix - it appears that this only works with /system write access for some reason....
Anyways, those of you with locked bootloaders on 4.4.2 or earlier (even with write-protection enabled) can now use Call Recorder in conjunction with TowelPieRoot!!
ENJOY!
Thanks for the info. I wish more options existed for recording phone calls on Android, whenever I mention it as something I'm looking for in a ROM people usually jump to the conclusion that it's for surreptiously recording conversations but it has plenty of legitimate uses, in journalism for example.
Installed the trial from the link in the description in the play store. You get it free for 2 weeks. I did a test call to my answering machine at work, and it worked flawlessly. Not sure when I'll actually use it outside of maybe calling Comcast to cancel my service soon.
Also talking to people that are very special to you and maybe you don't speak to them but very rarely and they pass away. You have they're voice to comfort the memories. As i lost my brother and best friend to suicide lately and there is not a app on Google play that i would have wanted more on my phone. Anyway thanks for the app @skvalex and thanks @samwathegreat for the thorough heads up as you always do for our community friend..

I have a XT1080M Droid Maxx 2013.
I'm assuming since my phone is basically the same as your Moto X then Call Recorder should work on mine as well unless:
1) Yours is rooted and you're using one of the root methods (Mine's stock).
2) Differing Android version (Mine's 4.4.4).
I'll give the trial version a go if yours is running similar to mine. If not, I'll wait to see what the future brings as far as unlocking my bootloader first! ?

I did not get 2way recording to work (without root). It only recorded my voice
Moto G4 / Moto G4 Plus Android 6.x
- in some countries the call recording feature is available, all recorders in the market work well, no root needed.
- in some countries the call recording feature is disabled by Motorola, all recorders in the market can only record your voice, the caller's voice is very weak in recordings. In this case you should root the phone, then several recorders can fix the problem.
Moto G4 / Moto G4 Plus Android 7.x
The call recording feature is still disabled by Motorola but not so strict, several recorders can bypass the limit without root, so no root needed.

UPDATE
======
Previously I said "several recorders can bypass the limit without root", now I realized this is not right (sorry for that). From users' feedbacks, the fact is:
- in very few countries, several recorders can bypass the limit without root.
- in most countries, both Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus, both Android 6.0 and 7.0 need root, otherwise you can only record your own voice, the caller's voice is weak in recordings, no matter what recorder in the market you are using.

Yes, it records calls in two sides, no root needed.

I am using Android 7.0 Moto G4 Plus (XT1644) non root and cannot get Boldbeast to record my voice or the caller's voice. It saves the call, but no sound plays back. I've tried using a couple record modes (several fail, 1 and 5 save with no playback sound) with autotune off and tune audio route set to group3. Anyone else have any luck?

Cool bro
I have tried many call recorders but out of all, the only call recorder worked for me (which records both in and outgoing voices) is the boldbeast call recorder. it requires root and should follow the instructions which were mentioned in the boldbeast forum. I think no call recorder in the playstore works for the moto g4 unless u root and install the boldbeast.

Aosp bugs (pixel ui)

Since I'm a new member here, I cant reply to the main thread. I will only report this bug to HDHR
Found Bugs :

-Cant use widgets

Since I'm a new member here too, I cant reply to the main thread. So I will report bug to HDHR here
Found Bugs :
- If I have incoming call when the phone in pocket, the screen is black except status bar, so i can answer or reject call, if the phone is out of pocket then everything ok
Sensor doesnt work while in call, battery calibration fails.
First of all awesome work for porting Nougat in A7000.
Hats off to you guys.
For those thinking over flashing it or not, JIO SIM WORKS PERFECTLY FINE.
Storage been partitioned so you get approx 4 gb free even after installing fb,whatsapp, etc.
And rom is smooth.
BUGS:
Status bar disappear sometimes, phone dial-er freezes while in call disconnecting it thus.
Battery has issues too.
Sensors don't work(proximity one.)
Please Please Please port the patch asap.

Audio Bug
I too have a strange bug to report. With headphones on, play something in Youtube/Phonograph app [did not test play music], pause it, open FM Radio [as there are no stations near me, all I get is a hiss], stop FM Radio, switch back to the audio app and hit play. Now, audio plays at a slow rate, you might not catch it if you weren't playing the same audio before. Fixed with a reboot.
Reproducible every time on my phone.
All of the problems mentioned above are legit. I'll add another ones: 1) can't set automatic daily wallpaper from the built in Google wallpaper app, individual wallpaper is fine, 2) can't mount system as writeable, 3) random apps crash for built in apps i.e. Settings, Dialer (yes I set it as default), Gmail, etc.
Bugs
First thanks for creating this thread.

Pixel ui on lenovo a7000
I have faced 2 problems after flashing pixel rom
First:
After i flashed pixel rom on my Lenovo a7000 and it keeps send me message *no cellular network*
This problem represented like that
Network works fine for some time in 2G when I change it to 3G or 4G (LTE recommended) it give me cellular network coverage but as soon as I make a phone it works fine for a few seconds and then send me message *no cellular network*
Second:
In SHAREit app i can send files to others but when anyone tries to send me files and tap my avatar on app he stuck on connecting to me and gives me nothing on my phone i guess it's related to hotspot or wifi
Solutions please
Cellular Data
If a SIM card is on 3G and I turn data on, sometimes the phone will lose the network signal, regain it, lose it again and it goes on in a loop. Only way to get out of it is turning off data.
Also, if any app uses GPS, the phone loses both SIM cards.
Opening Settings->About->Status->SIM status causes phone app to crash and phone loses both SIM cards yet again.

for mounting /system as writable, in Android 7 the system partition has changed their source code, you "can't" mount it as read-write anymore(As for some old apps like ES File Explorer and Root Explorer)! Using Solid File Explorer may somehow fixed the problems

s10+ Call recording

Any advice on workaround for this?
I need to have my calls recorded and have been doing so for a while now on PIE its been disabled by Google,
I dont think rooting will be the solution due to my banking app.
Any advice please?
Thanks
You'll have to purchase a Samsung phone with 8.x, so your options are the s/Note 8/9. Also, Magisk can hide root. It's held that functionality for a long time.

I use the Cube call recorder app and it works just fine for me.
There are a few 3rd party apps that will call record. Just have to choose your preference. May have to pay a few bucks for it.
is your S10+ use snapdragon 855 or exynos. I rememeber on exynos version, SS has stock call recorder
I have an exynos S10+ and it has been recording calls just fine.

If you decide to root you can cloak root to specific apps using Magisk

Is that a stock application? Can you set to automatically record all calls by default and then let's say delete everything older than 60 days or so?

All call recording are working just for limited time until Google stops that totally very soon. I think after 1st of April it should be not possible by stock Android 9.

I think you are in a country without call recording restrictions.

Don't see the option for call recording available on my Exynos model. I've tried 3rd party call recording applications and all seem to capture from the microphone. Can anyone recommend an application that can record calls without the use of the microphone? On my old Sony Xperia Z3 which I have replaced with S10+ I used to use Call Recorder - SKVALEX that records perfectly clear audio of both side using API, however, the application requires root.
