I'm thinking of using the Canadian Galaxy S7 (with model sm-g930w8) in the United States with Project Fi. Will I be able to get OTA updates?

Doesn't matter where in the world you are for OTA updates, it'll just get them at the same time as all the other W8s with that CSC

You seem like you know your stuff, so I hope you don't mind if I ask you a few unrelated questions.
I'm concerned about how long the battery was used, etc., and was wondering if I could send the phone to Samsung in the United States to have the battery replaced. Presumably, it will be out of warranty. Can Samsung replace the battery? If so, how do I find out the cost and the procedure to do this? What if I got a Canadian-based S7 (the SM-G930W8)? Can I still send it to Samsung here in the US to have the battery replaced? Is there a way to find places authorized by Samsung to do the replacement? I don't want some place that will do a bad job or use an already used battery.
If you're willing to share your knowledge with me about this, I'd greatly appreciate it! If not, if you are busy, that's OK. Have a good day!

Unfortunately my knowledge does not stem as far as what Samsung will and will not do in or out of warranty
You could ask them on Twitter
No doubt they can physically replace the battery, but as to whether they would or not is a different matter, you would expect so if you are paying for it, but I've never tried so it would be a guess
No idea about warranty regions either, I would have thought you would have to send it back to the country of purchase if using warranty, but you might be able to arrange something with Samsung after-all they are the same company no matter which country

Just curious. Let's assume the used S7 I'm interested in has been used since March 2016. How many more years of use do you think the average S7 should expect to get. I know, you're not God, but I don't really know how long flagship phones should last. What hardware component should go first, the power supply?
The other thing I was wondering was if you know whether authorized Samsung service centers use genuine Samsung, brand new never used batteries? Where do they get their batteries from? How do I know if I can trust them?

Had mine since August 2016 and it's still like new, gave my Dad my old S5 before this from around 2014 and that's still going strong with the same battery, brother had an S4 which was still going last year, pretty sure they still have an S2 kicking about that works too
Look after your phone and other than rare case hardware failures it should last a long time
I don't know anything about Authorised Samsung service centres, but I would expect they would use brand new official Samsung hardware for replacements yes, otherwise Samsung would be up s*** creek without a paddle if there was an injury caused by a 3rd party battery or similar
And they will be extremely careful about batteries since the N7 incident

An Outrage. Samsung will NOT be replacing my malfunctioning Note

Hi guys. I have posted before about my faulty Galaxy Note in a few threads, but today i was in a shock when the employee of the eshop i bought my Note from informed me that my Note not only has bad hardware but that Samsung refuses to replace faulty devices and only offers to repair them.
The employee told me that the technician diagnosed a motherboard problem(i don't know how else to translate it) and it won't even recharge.
It stands to reason that repairs should cost more than a new note.
Do you think that Samsung will replace my phone?
Also do you find this policy of Samsung wrong or what?
I believe it's appalling, and i am not going to buy another Samsung phone or other product from such an irresponsible company ever again.
Anyway, has anyone have experience with this sort of thing? If yes can you recommend how i should play my cards? Thanks in advance

Well its quite a common thing in service center... the so called "engineers" will not make a replacement for ur faulty phone when they see deem fit that its repairable...

Its a motherboard replacement, so no it does not cost more than the entire phone. It seems like you "want" a new phone due to the problem more than actually getting the problem resolved. I doubt samsung would utilize an effort in repair that would be more costly to them than replacing the phone itself. I personally don't think their methods are wrong and I love my Samsung products, I do however understand they are assembly line products and some will have defects, we get them fixed and move on.

Are you suggesting that there can be gained some kind of profit from me(other that transporting expenses to the couriers)? No that's not the case if that is what you are implying; my guarantee makes all repair costs free.
So how would they gain from me?
I find it quite normal that they only replace what needs to be...

I sent the phone twice to them and they returned it to me still malfunctioning. No i don't want a new phone more than mine fixed, i have just lost faith that my phone can ever be fixed, and that's why i want a new phone.
From what i've been told on this site it is supposed to be a very stable phone. I have been excited and then frustrated a lot with that phone and it has affected my mood on numerous occasions.
I think i am entitled to some anger against the company for not doing their job right.
I can understand assembly line defects but i don't understand indifference.
It seems like the whole business operates on an automatic assembly line and that frustrates me when i can't have a responsible company representative to solve my problem easily, quickly and effectively.
The only representatives i could reach on the phone were samsung calling center employees and they were vague as vague can be. They of course delegated the problem as much as they could.
I tell you friend, that's no way a responsible company acts. I will not be providing income to them anymore as a consequence of this behavior.

Who is fixing it Samsung or some shop that fixes them for warranty? Sounds like whoever is fixing your phone is dropping the ball and doesnt know what they are doing.
I'm not sure what other manufacturor will do things different? They are all basically the same or worse.

That line, which was not included in your original post, changed everything. If you have been following their "policy" and have given them multiple attempts to repair your device and now its costing YOU time and effort, that's unacceptable. I assumed you brought it in with an issue, and that was their resolution, seemed fitting. This no longer seems the case, and yes I would demand a replacement phone. Not only will your problem most likely never get fixed but opening the device up and moving internal parts around over and over is not a good thing for the longevity of the phone. So as they say in the courts, I retract my previous statement, tell em to replace the damn thing!
I feel for you dude.... You buy a brand new device expecting it to work, not having to send it back and forth to fix a problem on a brand new product.
But things happen and personally I don't mind getting it fixed if it's guaranteed. At least it's still the one you bought and not a refurbished unit from someone else.
Of course you have the right to be angry. Anyone would after all that you've described.

I sent it to Samsung. Samsung has a company here in Greece that fixes them. They send it there for repairs. Now they saw the condition my phone was in, and they made a poor diagnosis(In my view it was a hasty/irresponsible diagnosis in order to get rid of me) that it was a faulty battery. They didn't even bother to check my phone if it was ok after they "fixed" it as it turns out.
Now with Samsung that's the problem, they delegate and compartmentalize their company as much as it is required to shift responsibility and make you feel lost and frustrated.
I hate that kind of shadowy situation they have built around themselves so they won't have to admit "yes we don't give a **** about the consumer, we just want to sell", and that's why i decided to not take from them anymore.

In Bulgaria we have many small electronic stores where they get devices from eBay or God knows from where, the sell these devices 50-100 bucks cheaper and their warranty is linked to some crappy repair services and not to the official one (or authorized one). Some years ago I got my first smartphone Orange branded from such a shop. I would never do that mistake again.

The employee of the eshop called them today and was firm on replacing the device, the problem is that they were firm themselves about NOT replacing it.
What can i do against a big company like them?
If they decide i don't get another phone what the hell can i do?

I bought it from a small electronics online shop here in Greece. They buy the phones from Germany and the guarantee is linked to the German Market. If all else fails i have to take my case there.
But they employee tells me that it's the company's policy(as well as many others besides Apple) that they don't replace devices, end of story.
So again, even though my guarantee is solid, the COMPANY is NOT.
So they will charge you for replacing the mainboard? If samsung has representative office in your country, go there and directly talk with them about your problem. If not i think you're out of luck.

Nobody has made any talk about extra charges, that is covered by the guarantee.
If that was the case i might be convinced to move legally against them.
Its simple, cost of part and installing cheaper then replacement of whole phone then replace part. Logic no?

This is not a Samsung specific issue all phone manufactures work like this. Next replacing the motherboard is more or less getting a new phone as the phone is roughly motherboard + screen and very little else.

It might be different in other countries but i work for Ford in the uk and know alittle about the way guarantees and warranty work my note is on contract with 02 and to date i have had 3 new notes from 02 two because i scratched them and just said there was problems with the software on them. Also you have a 28 day no quibble returns policy in the u.k with electronic things. Also if ya good at blagging you can get anything of big companys i upgraded to a nexus in january and the software went into bootloop before i even had time to root it so i kicked off and this happened twice so ended up kicking off and telling them i wanted a note otherwise i was going to trading standards cos they werent fit for purpose and guess what i got a brand new note 3 months after an upgrade. I was always told shy kids get no sweets so try ya luck

Interesting this .I myself have just taken in my note 3 ( I brought direct from Samsung) which is completely dead into a Samsung approved repair centre. They told me the phone needs to be sent away for a motherboard replacement which will take between 7-10 days. I am a little putout as to the time without my Note but I suppose at least I'll get it back fully functional.
Now last year I took my wife's Iphone into one of there Genius centres with a problem (dead phone again) and guess what we were given a nice new shiny replacement there and then.
They do say you only know how good a manufacture is when you need them most !
Think Samsung may need to up there game.
You pay top dollar or a phone it should come with top dollar service

after a couple of hours i rebooted it and it went in download mode
it couldnt reboot normally
so i took it to the vendor
the vendor with kies reinstalled the os
then he gave me back the phone
after 2/3 hours the phone went again in download mode
i went back to the vendor asking for a new phone
i was told that samsung will repair it but wont change it
so now i have bought the phone...who is in assitance and i have to leave for holidays without my phone
ill need to buy another smartphone for the time being
ill sue the vendor and samsung for the above
no rom custom was installed
The conclusion is to not buy Samsung Galaxy s4 which is completely unstable and bugged
and not buy samsung in general anymore since their guarantee terms are illegal according to italian law

Guarantee is completely different story and depends on the store/retailer, manufacturer and many other terms.

and what if you were in my shoes? what if your perfectly working sgs4 would have broke down a few hours after purchase?
i need to wait for my new phone to get fixed
so i need to purchase another phone for the wait time
should i buy another sgs 4
or should i go for another brand.....
Of course I would be angry but you always must consider that the phone can be faulty. I had similar experience after my iPhone 4 home button broke and first time I took it to be fixed they told me that the button is ok But second time I got a new phone. You just have to be persistent.
I'll follow your advice. I was upset. I had all samsung since the galaxy note and always been very happy. I'll wait on my old phone

You legal case would never see the light of day.
You drew the wrong conclusions too early... and your body of evidence is fraught with too many untested variables.
The fact is... the store you bought it from is the problem.
In other places the phone would have been changed immediately.
The manager and staff for that particular store are being dim witted, pedantic and stubborn.
1. How does re flashing a phone going into download mode SOLVE the problem ? That technician was dim.
2. It is clearly a hardware fault that the store should swap you a new phone... and then they can repair the faulty phone and sell it again.
This store policy is fishy.
This store wants you to stand the loss of time because it is under warranty.
So they are being unreasonable asking you to wait as a BRAND NEW CUSTOMER for warranty to be applied to BRAND NEW DEVICE ?
That is a load of bollocks and you were probably intimidated by them ... cause I would make a stink.
As it stands right now :
1. I would wait on the device and also find out who is the manager for the store and their connection to Samsung (retailer/authorized).
Chances are they are an merely an independent company that is only an authorized distributor of the device.
2. Write down my case with the CUSTOMER SERVICE complaint in your country... if you have one just in case the device is returned and is still faulty.
In many cases I have seen Samsung gets a bad rep from sh*tty retailers.
It is well known that some retailers are less reliable when it comes to warranty problems. Usually they're the ones with lower prices. I bought my i9505 in Romania, at a retail store with good reputation, with a 30 days refund no questions asked, but, of course, the price was a bit higher than what other sellers asked for the same product.
Did I had any problems during the 30 days? No. So i kept the phone and I'm a happy customer.
Now, if you buy online, in Europe, there should be a 10 days refund no questions asked. Other than that, one can only wait for the repair, in case you didn't buy an express service together with your phone.
Legally, you're entitled to sue anybody, but these things take a lot of time.
I suggest people should be more careful on refund/replace/warranty rules of the seller. No one can protect you but yourself.

made in korea vs made in vietnam

Been doing some research and it seems like the vietnam versions are having more issues than the korea versions....there was one psrticular post where i saw someone sent there vietnam version phone for replacement and they sent back korean version and all problems were fixed...is this a broad issue? I have the n900 made in vietnam and im experiencing frequent over heating and occasional lockups....
Is it worth it/possibke to get it replaced for a 9005? I was dissapointed to see that its not a true octa after recieving the phone....and develpment for exynos is dead if it ever lived...but im still being optimistic waiting for updates both from devs and oem. Dont want to waste my time just to enevitbly trade the phone in.

usually on box...look around the stickers....
my box came in mostly spanish with secondary english and was made in vietnam lol....
Oh, yeah, the box. I was looking inside the phone. The battery says Vietname, probably the phone was made there too.

My first note 3 was from vietnams,after opening box found power switch was inside side panel,to use power switch i need to use my nails,even screen was flickering,force close of apps,very next return phone to shop,received replacement unit after 3 days but this time made in korea,I m very happy with this unit,no lags at all.:laugh:
Mine was made in China. Experienced no manufacturing defects.

As far as I have heard that only small labor work is done in countries like china Vietnam but major work is done in korea alone. All my previous galaxy phones were 100% korean made never had any issue. This one is from china. Fortunately no issues so far.

I have Vietnam version of note 3 and im not having any issue whatsoever !!!!! ridiculous post .. my note 3 is flying working so fast and smooth

i dont understand whats ridiculous? i am not the only claiming this problem...and although i havent replaced the phone yet there have been many claims that the made in vietnam version of the phone is a night and day difference of phones manufactured in other places...obviously these people osned both phones.
Mine was made in Vietnam. It works perfectly.
Don't try to read to much into this.

I have a Note 3 that appears to have been made or assembled in Vietnam. I desperately need a replacement because it is malfunctioning terribly. I still have several months left on the one-year warranty. Can someone tell me how I can get a replacement from Vietnam? The website is entirely in Vietnamese and no other Samsung center will help. I've tried US, Australia and our own local center (Trinidad and Tobago), and even Amazon and the seller I bought it from. I'm now thinking of trying the UK. So far no one wants to help me and I am now at a loss. I just want to know HOW to communicate with the Vietnam manufacturers to get a replacement. I'm desperate.
I have to agree with others... where the phone is made these days doesn't have much to do with the malfunctions people are having. My is from Vietnam and no issues whatsoever.
Most issues of force-close are due to rom or bad updates (which usually happens through ota). Best way to update is through sammobile & odin.
We don't know the whole picture of how others are having issues. --- to give you an example... someone asked me to help fix their Korean assembled phone, I found out they had dropped it in water (duh!!).
Many issues are due to how people take care of their phones. Who knows if half of these issues aren't just stupid people related lol (had to say it). Don't keep phone in glove compartments - don't keep in high-humidity areas - don't use it in the rain - list goes on.

You are suppose to contact the shop where you bought it from. It is their duty to send it to samsung repair center. If it's under warranty as you say it is - it shouldn't be an issue.

That's what I thought. But the shop doesn't want to help me. They simply reply with: "Our warranty is only 30 days, your warranty is a manufacturer warranty, so contact them directly for a replacement." They point-blank refuse to help me.
Ok, so it's a 2nd hand phone (not one you got with a phone company and 1-2yr contract).
Then the only thing you can do is contact any official samsung repair shop in your area to send it in. Be aware though, you will probably have to pay for any major repairs.
The standard 1yr warranty only covers defects of manufacturing construction. If it's because of something else (or you have used a custom rom), then they may refuse to fix or you have to pay for it yourself.

[Q] Sending in for a repair with KNOX tripped?

Currently I'm in a horrible situation. I bought a new Galaxy S5 off Swappa. Upon receiving it, I believed everything was fine, so I went ahead and rooted it and installed TWRP which trips the KNOX counter. When I began to call people on it, they all reported that they heard their voices echoing back to them. After days of trying to fix this issue, I gave up and decided I'd ask the seller for a refund. The seller refused me the refund but did offer to help out with sending it to Samsung for a repair. Turns out Samsung doesn't repair devices with KNOX tripped (I've been away from Samsung for a while, so this KNOX stuff was all new to me). I called T-Mobile to ask if they would honor an exchange (it's a G900T) but since I don't have service and can't confirm anything about the phone since I'm not the original buyer, they won't allow it. So it's looking like my only option is to send the device to Samsung and hope that they repair it despite KNOX being tripped. Does anyone have any experience with sending a device with KNOX tripped in for repair?
Are you using a CM/AOSP rom? Because they got a bug that causes the other person the hear them self, try to install a tw rom and check if they still hear echoing
I'm not at all comvinced that you really troubleshot the audio issue as well as you could. But as you say that you've given up.. Samsung is highly unlikely to do what you want. They routinely return Knox 0x1 phones as "unrepairable".
If you lived in the EU, you could cite consumer protection laws that are stronger and likely get them to conceed in your favour. Not so in North America. Your real recourse in NA is to pursue a claim through your carrier. Your active carrier, that is.
You can appreciate TMB's reluctance to take a hit on a non-customer's warranty claim. As much as you wish they would, why should they? Had you been the original purchaser, TMobile would probably process it, after some argument. But do it nontheless. But you are neither the original purchaser, nor an active customer it seems. So no.
Make a claim with Swappa if they have a mechanism in place for that. Or through Paypal, if you paid that way. Otherwise get your bank to do a chargeback on your credit card.
Or go back and look at the audio issue again. Which can almost certainly be remedied if you look into it harder.

Yep. I live in the US, so I can't cite consumer protection laws.
And, yeah, I'm not mad at T-Mobile for not exchanging the device. I honestly didn't expect them to, but it was worth a try.
I might make a claim with Swappa, but they don't seem to get involved with cases like these that often. PayPal would be the best bet, but the seller's return policy was something along the lines of "Returns are only accepted if the device is DOA."
And, ideally, I'd love to just fix the audio issue but I don't know what else I can do. I really like this phone and if it a hardware fault I'd like to get another, working, Galaxy S5 very soon. Do you have any recommendations on how to fix it? I've searched everywhere and I've seen a few people on a Verizon forum who reported the same issue but none of them listed a fix. They all just returned their devices.

I don't recall you telling us in detail what the problem was. Or how you tried to fix it, in detail.
This type of problem is seldom hardware. It usually resolves to codec /silence supression /echo suppression /VoLTE, etc settings. Or to changing a modem or similar. Start a new thread with an impressive amount of detail so that we have real details to work with and someone will try to help you.

I have a thread in the T-Mobile forums but haven't got much help. Would it be redundant to create a thread here, also? If so, here's exactly what I've been experiencing and all the details:
Device: Galaxy S5 G900T (T-Mobile variant). Unlocked for use on AT&T.
Problem: Callers reporting their own voice echoing back to them when speaking to me. They also describe me as sounding like I'm "in a tunnel" and report a good bit of feedback.
Steps taken to resolve the issue (none have worked): Factory resetting the device, swapping SIMs, troubleshooting with AT&T, troubleshooting with Samsung.

I'm sorry but I fail to see where the detailed descriptions are? We have some quite knowledgable and experienced people in this forum. But they cannot see your phone and are not psychic. If you really want a good shot at solving a difficult issue, you should be striving to provide exhaustive detail. Not the minimum summary that you think you can get away with.
Where are the details of this part, for instance?

How about a detailed description of the problem, if and how it varies, any patterns in when it occurs? How about your firmware version? Does it occur on local, long distance calls or when? What keywords did you search with, links to any related posts, screenshots of your system settings, a logcat would be great. Strong signal areas.. fringe areas? Relevant settings? What apps are installed on your phone and anything else that might possibly be relevant.
A detailed description, not a terse summary. Trying to troubleshoot in an information vacuum is not an effective way to track down a problem.

I didn't actually. I was pointing out that you were not a customer of the carrier where you were hoping to make a claim.
I don't know why you didn't tell us who your actual carrier is. We can't help you e=nearly as much when crucial information like that is witheld.
Still, find out what your carrier can offer. Some carriers may buy your handset (irrespective of condition) to capture you as a new customer. Or pay out the early termination fees feom your old carrier, which for a subsidized handser may amount to the same thing. Some have generous insurance plans that can even be purchased for existing phones that you own.

From what i`ve read most carriers don`t care too much about root and tripped KNOX flags, this doesn`t mean this applies in all cases though.

I've also read that they don't care too much about it, but I don't think I can send it to one. I called T-Mobile and since I don't use their service and am not the original owner of the phone, they can't do anything for me.

Can`t you make an arrangement with the original owner that he sends it in for repair and sends the device back to you? Just a thought ... Make sure this is well documented between the two of you so you neither one will be cheated.

Hi, so far my experience with the s6 edge plus is not so good. It overheats and sometimes is laggy. My friend who also bought the same model g928c from the same shop in UAE said his s6 edge plus broke because it overheated too much. I like the look and design though. If I sell my current s6 edge plus should I change to note 5 like my friend did? Or should I buy another working s6 edge plus? I can't return my current one because I live in the UK.
Never had any overheating or lag related to stock ROM so couldn't help you. I've heard the note tends to have more software lag due to specialized SPen programs and that the Edge+ is smoother. That's just hearsay though.
No heating here even after heavy gaming and never faced lag issues

Samsung WON'T honor the warranty because it is only valid in ASIA. I LIVE IN THE UK
Not had 1 problem with heating and had no lag since I got phone on release. Best Samsung yet just a shame it looks like we not going to get much developing action. I lime flashing new roms and with this phone it ain't gonna happen anytime soon

One classic reason when I make such an expensive purchase is to ensure I have customer protection.
If you think about this no UK shop or outlet will willingly touch your phone as you have not made the purchase through them, however, .........unless Samsung has changed its policy you will find your phone has an international warranty. THE problem for you will be finding a Samsung outlet that will deal with your mobile. The problems are compounded as nearly all outlets use one technical shop to repair all their mobiles, don't think for one second when any Mobile goes wrong it is returned to the importer its not. iPhone maybe the one exception?
May I suggest you contact Samsung UK directly and request assistance. They may either request you send them your phone or give you the name of an outlet where your phone can be examined for problems.
I live in Southern Europe and very often the mobiles here are vastly more expensive than they are in Amazon.de, for example. On times I will take a chance as Amazon have a cast iron reputable returns policy. Other times if the financial difference is small I suck it up and purchase here. I bought my Edge+ here to avoid return problems.
One thing you will always need is your dated receipt and on said receipt it must have the serial number or IMEI of the mobile. I doubt you will find much joy with dealing with outlets etc as they have not made a profit on the sale.
Samsung UK may even be 'grumpy' about it BUT I am confident if you get to a person who knows the law and is a decent enough member of staff they will help you. Hey, I purchase such items here sometimes have a problem and call the UK office and they have, to date, always answered my questions. Do NOT let the switchboard operator prevent you from speaking to the service or customer relations department.
I know for sure such international companies used to include in the box an international warranty, Sony certainly still do even listing world wide head offices for customers to contact. I cant recall if Samsung now include in the box such a warranty?
One thing for sure this mobile is a bloomin good one. I often purchase four mobiles a year I have now the S6, S6 Edge+, iPhone 6, Sony Xperia Z2 and Ultra etc. Though I have found all those mentioned to be superb mobiles the Samsung's appear to have developed extremely fast in a very short space of time. Hell, this Edge+ is micro engineered like a Swiss watch. Gone are those awful days of plastic metals and plastic leather etc.
Oh. I guess you could pay DHL or UPS and have it returned to the shop of origin, Postal cost would be about £10 to £15.00? Only enclose a photo copy of your receipt.

I say get a squaretrade warranty and be done with it.
I have decided that i used my Note more than i thought, i thought that i didnt want the s-pen but it seems i miss it and used it more than i thought i did. I randomly find myself reaching for it and to no avail its not there lol. This is a grea fast phone with the best display on the market but im going back to a Note.
