Just picked up my Moto G5+ from Costco a couple of days ago. For the most part I like this phone. Biggest benefit is the lack of crapware from the cell carrier.
I however am used to setting a custom ringtone and notification tones from a contacts information page. Meaning go to the contacts app, select a contact, choose the edit (pencil) scroll down till I find ringtone and/or notification tone. Select new tones as wanted/needed.
As such on previous phones when I received a SMS or a MMS either from an individual or sent to a group I could tell who sent the message without looking at my phone.
(This does not appear to be the case on my G5+.)
This was sent to me via the Lenovo/Moto website.
"For SMS, open a conversation > click on options (3 dots) > people and options > now customise notification here.
For calls, open contacts app > click on a contact > click on edit > click on options (3 dots)> set ringtone."
It gets me part of the way there. But the notification tones are for the individual message not the contact.
Any help is appreciated.
Kevin
Are you sure you followed the above steps correctly? Open contact app, select a contact, press edit, press options, select set ringtone, select whatever ringtone you want. That's it.
If you want to use ringtones apart from those which comes with phone, then put your ringtone file in the folder named "Ringtones" in internal storage. Now you should be able to select them in the list. Hope this helps.

I have tried Ringo which works just OK. Photo Contacts Pro works well until it closes itself I guess because of memory.
All I really need is SMS tone to asign to a specific contact and would like a full photo caller ID.
Can I manually set an SMS tone to a contact or do I have to find a program?
Start > Settings > Sounds and Notifications
From the "Event" menu, select "Messaging: New Text Message" and select the tone you want.
that only sets universal text message (or any other function) sounds. I think the original poster wants to set them for specific contacts (like a ringtone).
I am with you on wanting a full screen contact photo with an incoming call. any ideas/programs you have found?
I just figured out how to set mp3 ringtones for the Sony Xperia... but I'm wondering if there is a way to set a different ringtone for each contact in my phonebook ??
Yes open the contact and scroll to the bottom
I opened up the contact, and it shows their name , call, and send text message only. When choose "edit" to edit the contact, I can only change their name and number. Can you be more specific please ?
When I edit a contact I have 20+ things I can change about that one person. One of those is 'Ring tone'. Might be some of the SPB software adding it but I doubt it....
Ohh, ok thanks! I found it in the SPB panel, but it's not there in the windows mobile contact for some reason..
I think it depends on how you have the contact saved. The option to add a ringtone to a contact might only be available if the contact is saved to the phone, not the sim card.

On my X1, this is how i get to do it.
1) open contacts from start menu.
2) select the contact to edit. You should now see a screen with options like call mobile, call home, etc
3) click onthe name of the contact, and you should now see a screen with a lot of options for that contact.
4) scroll down until you see the option for ring tone. now click in the text space for the ringtone drop down selection box.
Hope this helps. There are also a lot of other useful options to be found on that screen, like setting pictures for contact. birthday reminders, etc.
Sorry if this seems like a couple of daft questions but I can't seem to find them out myself.
1) Is there a way to make the notification sound different for a text and an email. Right now if I receive either I hear the same sound, with the number of emails I get a day I tend to ignore it which now results in my not seeing I have a text till a couple hours later.
2) Is there some way to see how many texts and calls I've made over a set period of time? All the phones I've had before would give totals for me which I could then reset but I can't find that in this phone. I've downloaded an app called Phonalyzr but it doesn't do what I'm really after.
on the first point, go to Messages, press Menu --> Settings --> Select ringtone
same for email
hmm i dont seem to be able to do that. When I change the notification sound in either the messaging app or the default phone settings it changes in both. I dont have the option to change it in mail (I use activesync btw).
Its very annoying to have the same sound for both.
The notification sound set in the main phone settings will be for anything on the phone that you haven't set a different one for.
If you then go to messages and in the first messages window with "compose message" at the top, press menu / settings /scroll down to notication setting and choose select sound - you can then choose a different sound for messages.
There's currently no option to choose a different sound for gmail or mail as far as I know.
Dayzee
but when i open my Gmail, Menu, Settings, i get the Choose Ringtone option....first is Default Ringtone, then others :/
You are right Suisen - Thanks - Meant the HTC Mail one, but of course you can change the gmail notify to a seperate one. I just not done it on my Hero.
With most progs, if the app itself allows you to select a sound it'll have its own, but if not, it plays the one you choose in main Phone settings.
Dayz
Cheers for that, now I know when to actually look at my phone when it makes a sounds
how do i change message ringtone to mp3? someone help me plssssssss!
hey
just put the .mp3 in the documents folder on your phone
you should have a My Documents\My Ringtones (preferred) or there is a Windows\Rings, either one will do.
then go to settings, sounds, notifications tab, from Event: drop down select Phone: Incoming call.

the Q is for atext message not an incoming call..
So this won't help.
As far as i now, you cannot use an mp3 for this.
change it into a WAV frmat and it will work.
it might be possible you need to put it in a special location (such as the windows folder or the my documents folder)
Yeah it's possible,
either do as gazzacbr said, but choose "Messaging: New text message" you can change almost all the phones sounds here...
I preffer this easier way (for me)
Slide to settings > Press Sounds > Scroll to bottom for "Notification Sounds" > Press the notification you want to change and select it off the list
If the mp3 isnt listed then use the FileManager, find your mp3 and hold down on it, when the menu appears scroll down to "Set as Ringtone" which actually just puts it in on the list of selectable tones. Then simply repeat the steps above.
- I should probably note, I downloaded an update off HTC's website that had something to do with MP3 ringtones but I could initially do this beforehand anyway.

I can't find it... can you please put it here?
He said he wants a mp3 to be used as a new text message tone. this is something even i wanted to ask, but well it cant be done. tried everything. the patch is for something else. tried putting it into my ring tones folder, tried putting the mp3 (a 26sec file) into windows ring folder but na nothing, restarted still nothing. the only thing i think will work is to try converting it into .wav format.
@rvrosa its there in touch2 support.
it can be done. i currently use a MP3 file as my SMS alert, and a different MP3 as my email alert.
If my previous technique doesnt work, copy the desired MP3 to the root of your microSD card. It will automatically list it in the selectable ringtones
under mobile device go into the folder that says application data then the folder that says sounds, put the mp3 in there and you should be able to select it for your sms.
Hi sorry for this noob question , but would like to know if thier is a way to have different tones for email notification and sms notification , this use to be a good feature in windows mobile
Custom SMS ringtone
I signed up here, just to answer your question
To get a custom ringtone for sms notifications, I did the following:
1. Get access to you sdcard (either by plugging it in usb to your computer, or installing ftpserver on device (i recommend SwiFTP)).
2. Get the mp3 you want as notification tone (which is what it's called).
3. Navigate to (or create) the /sdcard/media/notifications/ folder.
4. Put mp3 there.
5. Restart your phone (not 100% sure it's needed).
6. Go to settings -> Sound and display -> Notification ringtone, and select your file - it's probably in the bottom of the list
7. Enjoy!
8. ... let me know if it worked
To change the e-mail notification tone, I think you need to do that in the e-mail app itself - but not sure, since I haven't tried it ;-)

I prefer ringdroid, you can make a clip of the song you want and it's less manual. Set this as your default notification.
As far as email goes, it will default to what you've just set. There is an option within the settings menu (hit the home button within the client) and you can set this there (I think this wont override your other notification sound, I tested, but its 11pm here so I can't test the text message function to make sure that notification is still in tact. )
Thanks guys , will check these options and report

That´s right. There you can change the notification tone for the incoming mails and set it to vibrate or not too.
